[Bug 545985] Re: Huawei E620 usb modem doesn't work in 9.10 or 10.04 Beta 1
Just installed 2.6.31-20-generic #58-Ubuntu and my ID 12d1:1001 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E620 USB Modem stopped working. Everything was working fine with 9.04. An old htc TyTN II USB connected saves my life until a fix is available. Same on 2 computers: Compaq Evo N800c and hp EliteBook 8530w which perform extremely well with Ubuntu. The Vodafone Mobile connect application from Betavine is able to send and receive SMS but is not able to connect. The diagnostics from this program shows all the details from the USB Modem and Provider. -- Huawei E620 usb modem doesn't work in 9.10 or 10.04 Beta 1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/545985 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

glad it works for electhor, but on my 2.6.31-20-generic #58 it still doesn't work. [Bug 545985] Re: Huawei E620 usb modem doesn't work in 9.10 or 10.04 Beta 1
Thank you. Interesting enough, update manager does the job of solving the problem for one of my laptops: Compaq Evo N800c (old test machine). Was on 2.6.31-20-generic #58 version with the problem. I did run Update manager first to make sure it is up-to-date (requires restart). Result was an upgrade to 2.6.31-21-generic #59. I did plug in Huawei E620 USB Modem: it worked first time! I tried the same thing on my other machine hp EliteBook 8530w same versions and still does not work. Only difference is that I previoulsy installed Betavine and through Betavine it now works (did not work on 2.6.31-20). Now trying to figure out what the difference is between the 2 machines. -- Huawei E620 usb modem doesn't work in 9.10 or 10.04 Beta 1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/545985 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 545985] Re: Huawei E620 usb modem doesn't work in 9.10 or 10.04 Beta 1
Found the culprit! On my second machine modemmanager (D-Bus service for managing modems) was missing. Installed with Synaptic and it now works. I have no idea why modemmanager was not installed on this machine. Anything to do with Betavine? I don't know. To summarize: Huawei E620 USB Modem does not work on 2.6.31-20-generic #58. Upgrading to 2.6.31-21-generic #59 through Update manager solves the problem. Info for people living in Belgium: the Huawei E620 USB modem is the one that is provided by Belgacom Mobile (or Proximus) identified as Modem USB VMC K3715 or 'Vodafone Mobile Connect' so they know it works with Ubuntu 2.6.31-21-generic #59. I my case I have a Proximus Mobile Internet subscritption. I want to mention it as it is not documented in the documentation.
Well, not 100% fixed. Electhor is right, when I rebooted this mornig it wasn't working any longer. At least not on my production laptop, the test laptop still worked first time. I got it working again but did too many changes to be sure which one was the right one. I re-installed modemmanager. I tried to EDIT the connection in Connection Manager but had no access. I deleted it (that worked), I rebooted, made the connection again, had to change it to connect automatically because this was not set at creation, unplugged and re-plugged the USB modem and finally it worked. I am currently posting this through the modem. I am not sure which action solved the problem, so I will try later to figure out what the exact sequence is to get it back to work.
I made various tests this is what I can state: 1. Strange behavior: after a successful connection I can no longer Edit My Mobile Broadband connection. It gives me an "Error Initialising editor Insufficient privileges".But I can delete it. 2. Atfer deletion of my connection, if the modem is detected I have a chance to select New Mobile Broadband (GSM) connection and recreate a connection. It works from then on. 3. If the modem is not detected, to make it work again I have to re-install modemmanager in Synaptic, even if it is there and installed.,it then detects the modem and the rest is same as point 2.
Have done more testing, that explains the delay. It looks like the E620 modem connects if it is plugged in at boot time. It behaves erratically if plugged in after the system has booted without it being plugged in before the boot. I upgraded my test laptop with the official 10.04 LTS (2.6.32-21-generic #32) and the E620 modem behaves the same way: OK if connected before boot and behaves erratically if connected after the boot. The erratic behaviour includes not detecting the modem, detecting the modem but not picking the connection.
You are right electhor, thank you for the tip. I installed 2.6.34-999-generic #201005011008 SMP and the Huawei E620 USB Modem is working for hours now without problem. I removed it and switched it back in a number of times and every time it did connect properly. I am not sure why uname -a mentions i686 because I downloaded headers and image named _i386 but that's another story. This was on my test machine, not sure I want to upgrade my production machine at this time, as it is mentioned somewhere "use it at your own risk" which I dislike for a production machine. -- Huawei E620 usb modem doesn't work in 9.10 or 10.04 Beta 1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/545985 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
