The file tracker-preferences was complaining about was ~/.config/tracker/tracker.cfg. This bug can be reproduced by creating an empty tracker.cfg file (i.e., move tracker.cfg to tracker.cfg.bak and do touch tracker.cfg). "Set display brightness to" is completely ignored on bootup. For example, I have it set to 21%, but on bootup, the brightness is *always* 100%. 3. This is not a wishlist item. So typically on most laptops, when the headphone plug is inserted into the headphone jack, sound to the internal speakers is cut off and plays through only the headphones. (This is the behavior in OS X, for example, and I believe it was also the 8.10 behavior.) I thought this was implemented in hardware, but apparently it's implemented by the sound driver, as Kacper's patch demonstrates. I think someone else already requested this above, but would it be possible to have a patch that mutes the internal speakers when headphones are inserted? Also, and I believe this was also mentioned above, could we have a patch where Master controls the volume of the headphone output, too? Of course, this would only be useful if the above muting of speakers was implemented, as well. Kacper, are you the only developer working on this? I guess the questions are: is it different because it's a refurb, or is it different because it's a model from a different manufacturing age than everyone else who's reported? Perhaps the better question is, can a workaround be written, in the event the chipset is of this design, rather than the design of yours? I get a noticeable amount of oscillating noise from the headphones now, using the patch against ALSA 1.0.19, and following the instructions on the wiki for using PulseAudio with 6 channel sound. The oscillating noise goes away when I mute the HP channel. However, when I mute it, I can hear a steady tone. If I slide the volume sliders up and down for the HP channel, the pitch will change (randomly, not directly or inversely). Additionally, the internal mic does not seem to work for me. Whenever I open Volume Control and go to the recording tab, the channel is always shown with a muted mic button. On further exploration, it seems that each level of the channel has its own peculiar noise. The oscillation is at level 0, but the following levels are extremely noisy: 8, 17, 27, 36, 45, 55, 64, 73, 83, 92. It's reproducible to get the noise on each of these levels. If you updated your kernel in Jaunty, you will have to re-install the ALSA modules with another round of `sudo make install`. Also, see my note above that I have to move the "Master" channel up until sound finally crackles on for the rest of the system, including the headphones. This is a network that has many WAPs of the same ESSID on a variety of different channels, which seems to be NetworkManager's Achilles heel. (See also Bug #111502.) It seems that whatever streaming library is used without crossfading doesn't handle streams correctly. This will work fine for me. I experience this same bug. It is extremely easy to reproduce. I simply switch over to using compiz (compiz --replace) then I open Rhythmbox. (It starts hidden, with just the status icon in the GNOME panel.) I click the status icon, which is supposed to make the full Rhythmbox window appear. The screen will lock up, sometimes in a corrupted state. Sometimes the mouse will pause for a second and then I can move it around. I can not click on anything to perform any action. No input is accepted from the keyboard. I am using Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty 64-bit on a MacBook 5.1 with xserver-xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu18. I am using the binary NVIDIA driver. [Bug 336001] [NEW] NetworkManager causes system freeze, lock up, kernel panic
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: network-manager This is a critical bug, either caused specifically by or precipitated by NetworkManager. There is a very large thread of users that seem to be experiencing this bug at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=976287. Please note that there are other mixed bugs within this (there seem to be, for example, unrelated bugs regarding USB mice), but it's important to note that the vast majority of the users in this thread experience system freezes, apparently by kernel panics, during WiFi activity with NetworkManager. I have been experiencing this bug since Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10. I am running 8.10 on a Compal HEL 80 with an Intel Pro Wireless 3945ABG card. I connect to a Virginia Tech campus network, which uses WPA-EAP with TLS, and requires an 802.1x user certificate, CA certificate, and user key to authenticate. (Our LUUG has documented the actual steps for connecting to this network in Ubuntu 8.10 at the following URI: http://www.vtluug.org/wiki/index.php?title=VT_Wireless#NetworkManager_0.7) This network has many wireless access points (WAPs) of the same ESSID (VT-Wireless), which I'd like to draw particular attention to, because many of the system freezes reported in the above Ubuntu Forum thread occur on college campuses or workplaces that also likely have many WAPs of the same ESSID. I raise the possibility that these lock ups occur when NetworkManager decides to "hop" from one WAP of an ESSID to another WAP of the same ESSID (but different Address), as I've noticed somewhat frequent disconnections and reconnections in NetworkManager via nm-applet, and also that NetworkManager chooses somewhat poorly in which WAP of the same ESSID to connect to (there may be another WAP of a different address with a much stronger signal, yet NetworkManager chooses a WAP with a poorer signal). I do not experience these system freezes when I kill NetworkManager and connect to the campus network via wpa_supplicant. I reported this in the above mentioned thread at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=976287&page=22#213, and I gave a further detailed explanation at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=976287&page=22#219. Therefore, please do not mark this as a kernel bug. Please investigate directly NetworkManager prior to sending to the kernel devs. NetworkManager is either directly causing this bug, or is performing some set of actions that precipitates it. Specifically, the following bug is likely related, but was mis-categorized as a kernel issue: Note the likely related bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/311519 I also do not experience these system freezes when connecting to my home WAP, either via NetworkManager or wpa_supplicant. The home WAP is WPA- PSK. Only a password is required to connect to that WAP, and it is the only WAP of its ESSID in the area. I have attached the output of lspci. I hope the Ubuntu team will take a look at this issue. I performed an install of 9.04 Jaunty Alpha 5 on a new MacBook 5.1 and experienced immediate lockup upon connection to the VT-Wireless network via NetworkManager's nm-applet, so it is likely this critical bug is still present in the packages shipping with Jaunty. Suggestions for reproducing the bug: * Run tests of NetworkManager within a room that has multiple WAPs of the same ESSID * Set up connections to these WAPs to use 802.1x certificates * Connect using NetworkManager and wait until freeze--this often times will not even require explicit network communication by the user (e.g., browsing the web via Firefox, running a Bittorrent), lockups tend to be spurious in timing from my experience * Maybe having multiple clients connected to the WAPs will also prove a key part--again, freezes reported tend to happen on college campuses or in workplaces Suggestions for users who suspect they are experiencing this bug: * Report here, with your network card and information about the type of network you were connecting to (e.g., WPA-EAP over TLS with 802.1x certificats) * Please attempt to connect to your wireless network through a different client instead of NetworkManager. This file worked on Intrepid. My original xorg.conf file from the out of the box install was completely empty, apparently. As such I can't actually attach it here in Launchpad. Public bug reported: As of Jaunty (Ubuntu 9.04) Alpha 5, with kernel 2.6.28-8-generic, the MacBook 5.1 will hang upon attempts to reboot (restart). The screen will go blank black, and the system will hang indefinitely. It might, but I get no sound at all--not out of the speakers, nor out of the headphone jack. It's interesting because the users in that thread who got sound working got the ALSA libs from Jaunty, which is what I'm running (Alpha 5). There's been mention in the forum threads about needing to set the channels from 2 channel to 6 channel, but I have not found where that setting is located (pointers on the wiki page and forum don't work for me--I don't see the option in gnome-volume-control or in alsamixer). That is a working solution. I would encourage an elegant solution which follows the model of OS X's menu bar (the equivalent of a panel in GNOME). The menu bar casts a shadow, however, it does not cast it upon any other windows than the root window (desktop). The difference is subtle, but beautiful. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: system-config-printer At work we have a printer server, which previously I accessed (up through Ubuntu 7.10) by creating a file client.conf with ServerName in it and placing this file in ~/.cups/ As long as I was on the VPN for work, I could access these printers. Up through Ubuntu 7.10, going to System->Administration->Printing would show the list of printers, and I could select a default printer, view printer statuses, etc. As of installing Ubuntu 8.04, when I go to System->Administratino->Printing, I am presented with an error that reads: Not authorized The password may be incorrect, or the server may be configured to deny remote administration. I never had to enter a password before to see the printers. And it's certainly not my intent to administer the printers. I would simply like to select a different default printer. I confirmed my user account is a member of the lpadmin group. I saw nothing particular in the cupsd.conf that changed between 7.10 and 8.04. I have provided the diff as an attachment. I should add that by removing the client.conf file, restarting cupsys, and then attempting to connect to the server by the "Goto Server" button results in this same problem. Also, part of the "Goto Server" dialog has a field for username, but the username was never required for me to connect to the print server before. [Bug 201130] [NEW] algorithmicx \Statex indentation broken.
Public bug reported: Between Feisty Fawn and Gutsy Gibbon, the version of the algorithmicx package changed and the indentation for the \Statex command became broken. Previously, the \Statex command was inline with other commands at the appropriate indentation level. In Gutsy, it has no indentation whatsoever and is always at the leftmost of the containing box created by the algorithmic environment. I will attach files for evidence. I suggest looking at the changes between algorithmicx.sty and algpseudocode.sty between Feisty and Gutsy. I am experiencing this bug, both with the 2.6.31-19-generic and 2.6.31-17-generic kernels. I am, however, able to adjust the screen brightness using the F1 and F2 brightness buttons (pushing them without holding down the fn key). The problem however is that the brightness increments or decrements very, very slowly and in tiny amounts. Earlier releases had much larger increment and decrement amounts, and were much more usable. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox If an external device is mounted in Rhythmbox via the MTP plugin, the user will experience an error in transferring a song to the device that has the same track artist and track title as an existing track on the external device. The error states: PTP Layer error 200f: LIBMTP_Send_File_From_File_Descriptor(): Could not send object info. This bug is highly reproducible. In my library, I have several artists for which I have multiple recordings of their songs (typically from different albums). I am only able to store at most one of these recordings on my external device when transferring music over by MTP. Is only the track artist and title used to describe the file when transferring by MTP, and if so, can something more distinguishing be used so that multiple recordings of the same song by the same artist may be transfered via MTP?
