[Bug 244674] Re: miro segmentation fault

2008-07-01 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 253765] Re: Replace Pidgin with Empathy

2008-07-31 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
While I think that you are correct, that we should transition to Empathy
as the default IM sometime in the next couple of releases, a Launchpad
bug isn't really the right forum for suggesting such a change.

The way to proceed here would be to send a mail to the ubuntu-devel-
discuss (or possibly ubuntu-devel) mailing list with a comprehensive
list of reasons why Empathy should become the default IM client. Note
that arguments about the Telepathy framework being better aren't likely
to be persuasive on their own - we'll want to know what Empathy *does*
that Pidgin doesn't.

[Bug 261373] [NEW] CVE-2008-3547: Network exploitable buffer overrun in openttd < 0.6.2

2008-08-25 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openttd

>From the Debian bug:

OpenTTD servers of version 0.6.1 and below are susceptible to a remotely
exploitable buffer overflow when the server is filled with companies and
clients with names that are (near) the maximum allowed length for names.
In the worst case OpenTTD will write the following (mostly remotely
changable bytes) into 1460 bytes of malloc-ed memory:
up to 11 times (amount of players) 118 bytes
up to 8 times (amount of companies) 124 bytes
and 7 "header" bytes
Resulting in up to 2297 bytes being written in 1460 bytes of malloc-ed
memory. This makes it possible to remotely crash the game or change the
gamestate into an unrecoverable state.

There are three ways of fixing this:
- upgrading to 0.6.2.
- backporting the bugfixes to 0.6.1 and make a network-incompatible version
of OpenTTD which makes it impossible to participate in multiplayer games
with both Debian and non-Debian users.
- increase the allocation size, which will make it even network incompatible
 with itself.

I'm not sure what, if anything, we want to do about this.

[Bug 160751] Re: gpa: new upstream version 0.7.6 available

2008-08-26 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Your changelog contains:
+ * Modified debian/gpa.desktop to adhere to standards.
+- Deleted the upstream gpa.desktop file as it has deprecated options.
and
+ * Removed the upstream gpa.png file.
But this doesn't appear in the diff. By "upstream" here, do you mean Debian?
Also, why are you removing the gpa.png file?

If "upstream" does not mean Debian, I don't think deleting the upstream
gpa.desktop file is the right approach; I believe you should patch it,
so you can send the patch upstream.

Uurgh. I've been working with pkg-cli-libs in Debian to update

is a seemingly accidental API break in the 0.18 releases

good idea to hold off on updating the library until that's resolved,

Actually, no. I should have been more precise here.

The only drivers which currently implement redirected direct rendering,
which is what's needed for this to work, are the nvidia-glx drivers.
Still WONTFIX, but this may well change with Jaunty - I'd expect DRI2 to
be sufficiently stable to ship in the next release, and that allows
redirected direct rendering (for drivers that support it).

Thanks for this; it looks good, with the exception of the changelog

is useful because it gives the next merger a starting point for
determining changes.

While you're at it, could you fix bug 296175 - that should just require
the miro package to Conflicts: miro-data < 1.2.8. And browsing the miro
bug page for bugs you can close with the upload would be good - you'll
close bug 289433 with this package, for example.

Could you please update the changelog to list the remaining changes,
make these small changes, and I'll upload it.

1.2.6 (or possibly earlier, but 1.2.6 should be safe), since that's when

[Bug 99740] Re: Firefox problems with desktop-effects

2008-11-11 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
You certainly can't run wmii with compiz - they're both window managers,
and you can only run one window manager at a time.

It looks like the people who have re-opened this bug are actually
experiencing a Firefox bug that curiously doesn't manifest under
Metacity. If I had to make a guess, I'd say it's due to differing
"legacy fullscreen" support. It might be useful for people who can
reproduce this bug to attach (not inline, please!) the output of "xprop"
on the firefox window.

Re: [Bug 99740] Re: Firefox problems with desktop-effects

2008-11-12 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Aha. That'll be it - setting the desired width & height to be same as
the screen size will trigger the "legacy fullscreen support" in the
Compiz workarounds plugin. Presumably Wmii also supports this
(obsolete) method of making a window fullscreen.

I'm a bit surprised that Metacity doesn't support this old fullscreen
method.

[Bug 299338] Re: grub2 taking configuration from somewhere else

2008-11-18 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
What do you mean by "not booting the way it boots from menu.lst"? What
exactly is different? In particular, does grub-pc *work* - as in: does
it successfully load Ubuntu?

Grub2 doesn't use menu.lst; it does have its own configuration.

As to your other questions:
*) It sets root=(hd0,1) because grub2 starts partition numbering at 1, not 0
*) The "search --fs-uuid --set" line is searching for your /boot partition by
UUID, and setting it to the root if it finds it.

The only influence the bootloader has on the usplash theme is (a)
whether it's on or not, and (b) the root partition that you're booting
from. Since you've set menu.lst to not show the splash, it obviously
won't be shown under grub legacy. You haven't disabled the splash under
grub2, so the usplash will be shown.

Finally; I don't think the UUIDs of your drives are a particular
concern, but the UUID of your root drive is still in the menu.lst you
posted. And the UUID of your / partition is in grub.cfg.

> a. How do I disable the splash

Edit the configuration in /etc/default/grub. In particular, you want
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT to not contain the "splash" command. This is
where the default options are set. (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX options apply to
all linux entries, _DEFAULT only applies to non-single-user-mode
entries).

It isn't getting the Kubuntu splash at all; the only control grub has
over usplash is whether it shows at all, by passing the "splash"
argument to the kernel or not.

I'd be amazed if passing the "splash" option to the kernel under grub
rather than grub2 didn't also show the Kubuntu splash.

Um, installing software from outside the official Ubuntu repositories
isn't really the best first advice to give.

Miro crashing like that suggests that it's a Xine bug. It should be
easy enough to test whether other applications can play the video, or to
check whether switching to the GStreamer backend
(Miro->Video->Options->Playback->Use "gstreamer" renderer) avoids the
crash.

[Bug 264911] Re: Frequently stutters/pops with hda_intel

** Summary changed:

- [PPA 0.9.11 regression] Frequently stutters/pops with hda_intel
+ Frequently stutters/pops with hda_intel

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: pulseaudio

- I'm testing the 0.9.11-0ubuntu1~ppa3 pulseaudio packages from Luke's
- PPA. This seems to have serious regressions on my hda_intel (codec:
- Realtek ALC660) laptop - disc or CPU activity will often cause pops in
- pulseaudio playback. Speaking to crimsun on IRC, it seems that this
- requires some post-1.0.17 alsa-lib stuff from git to work right.
+ pulseaudio:
+ Installed: 0.9.13-2ubuntu1

- Also, while my set of USB speakers (which appear as a separate audio
- device) don't suffer from the same popping problem they seem to silently
- consume the first couple of hundred milliseconds of every stream.
+ Pulseaudio 0.9.13 has serious regressions on my hda_intel (codec:
+ Realtek ALC660) laptop - there are frequent pops in pulseaudio playback,
+ even under minimal or no CPU or IO load. These do not occur with my USB
+ speakers.
+
+ This was originally filed against the version of pulseaudio in Luke's
+ PPA for Intrepid testing, but it persists in Jaunty.

This isn't the Ubuntu version of Miro, and won't disable the GNOME

[Bug 303567] [NEW] Accidentally huge diff.gz?

2008-11-29 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Public bug reported:

libdrm 2.4.1-0ubuntu6 has a huge diff.gz, and it looks very much like
this is accidental. In particular, the diff.gz:

a) Changes the drm API by removing _DRM_TTM from the memory-access enum in
shared-core/drm.h
b) Changes the drm API by removing all the memory-manager IOCTL #defines from
shared-core/drm.h
c) Adds a large number of files only used for the building of the kernel modules
d) Removes nouveau_drm.h from the installed files in shared-core/Makefile.am

In the (unlikely) event that this is intentional, it would be nice to
document the reasoning in a README.Source, and not remove the
nouveau_drm.h from the installed headers.

So, firstly: much of the software in the archive has watchfiles. That
means that every couple of days or so the Ubuntu External Health Status
system checks whether there's a new upstream version, and emails the
maintainer. We (generally) don't need to be told about new versions.

If there's some delay (a couple of weeks or so should be right), then
it's probably worth filing a bug - or jumping on to IRC and asking about
it. Do is in Universe, so #ubuntu-motu is the right place to be. We
should either be able to give you pointers towards the right place to
ask, or pointers towards how to help update it yourself.

[Bug 383973] Re: [GM45] system frozen after a period of inactivity

2009-06-15 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Marking gnome-power-manager task as invalid. I see no incorrect
behaviour from the power manager.

I also see this bug. It appears to be triggered by turning off the
display with DPMS. Once the display has been turned off, X seems unable
to turn it back on. The laptop is still responsive - network & activity
continues, and if KMS is enabled, SAKing X will turn the screen back on.
Confirming for the DDX component; I'm not sure why this would be kernel-
related when not using KMS. I'll do some more testing.

I note that you've got an nv5x card (Geforce 8 or above). The 2d
acceleration on these cards only works when a compositing manager is
running (this has to do with VRAM tiling requirements).

If you're not running a compositing manager (not Compiz, which requires
3d, but Metacity's compositing manager, KWin's "XRender backend"
compositing manager, or xcompmgr), then this is expected behaviour for
the moment. Without acceleration, rotation will be done entirely in
software, which, as you've found, is terribly slow, and Xv (the X Video
extension) won't work at all.

[Bug 395700] [NEW] Update libdrm-nouveau for 0.0.14 drm interface

2009-07-05 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Public bug reported:

The nouveau kernel interface recently changed (twice) to 0.0.14. In
order to support a more recent nouveau stack (one which actually builds
against the 2.6.31 kernel, for example) in Karmic, we need to update the
libdrm-nouveau library built from the libdrm source package.

The attached debdiff applies the 4 upstream git commits which implement
this new interface. They don't touch anything outside of libdrm/nouveau
and shared-core/nouveau_drm.h, so they're (almost ;)) totally safe for
everything !nouveau.

[Bug 363880] Re: When using xserver-xorg-video-nouveau, xine-ui crashes with X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)

2009-04-19 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Normally the minimal amount of information necessary for a nouveau bug
report is Xorg.0.log, xorg.conf, and dmesg output.

However, I can guess a few things:
1) You've got a geforce 8 or 9 series card
2) You aren't using a compositing manager such as KWin (with desktop effects
enabled, with the XRender backend), Metacity (with the
/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager gconf key set to 'true') or xcompmgr.

If this is the case, then it's currently expected behaviour. The
nouveau drivers only provide Xv acceleration for geforce 8 or 9 series
cards when the Composite extension is being used.

2009-04-19 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
This is expected to not work without a composite manager. Assuming you're
using Ubuntu & GNOME rather than KDE or something else, running:
"""
gconftool-2 --set --type=bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager true
"""
to turn on Metacity's compositor should make video playback work for you again.
And will probably speed up rendering generally; there's no acceleration on
geforce 8 & 9 cards without composite.

It's not really possible to set that automatically, and enabling it

This information is indeed wrong. I'm updating the answer now.

The 'nv' driver is maintained by an nvidia employee, and is generally
fairly feature-poor (not much acceleration, no 3d, poor dual-head, etc).
The nouveau driver is a community project that aims to provide a
feature-complete open-source driver, and has no nvidia backing. The
nouveau drivers are experimental - many things work, and many cards work
much better than with the nv drivers, but some cards don't work at all.

The nouveau drivers in Ubuntu offer absolutely no 3d support; this bug
doesn't really apply to them at the moment.

The upstream nouveau development does have some 3d support for some
cards, but this is aggressively unsupported - it is known to be
incomplete, and the best that can be expected is for it to run
undemanding 3d apps until VRAM is exhausted. Upstream does not want to
hear about problems with 3D unless there is a patch attached which fixes
them!

By the time nouveau's 3D support is worth shipping, it will support DRI2
- the initial work is already there.

+ The nouveau & drm kernel modules as shipped in
+ nouveau-kernel-source will fail to build against 2.6.30 kernels, due to
+ API changes in these kernels. The fix is reasonably simple - we can
+ pull a couple of patches from the kernel drm tree & apply them with dkms
+ until these changes hit the nouveau drm tree

** Summary changed:

- The nouveau & drm kernel modules as shipped in
+ Nouveau kernel module fails to build against 2.6.30 kernels

Re: [Bug 231697] Re: Composite extension not working with dual screens using Xinerama

2009-04-28 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Ok. So, there are some use-cases that I didn't know about where
Xinerama is required. That doesn't change my comment, though: the
nVidia drivers are proprietary, closed source blobs.

We cannot fix or improve the nvidia drivers in any way.

Furthermore, I don't believe nVidia intends to (re)implement
Xinerama+Composite. If you want a definitive statement on this,
you'll need to contact nVidia. The official nVidia support forums are
here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14 - nVidia
employees do frequent that board, so you can hopefully get an official
response if you ask.

[Bug 89222] Re: compiz only refreshes part of desktop/root window width, leaves ghosts in remaining area

2009-04-29 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
This sounds a *lot* like you've passed "SKIP_CHECKS=1" to compiz. This
*is* a limitation of your card - the maximum texture size is 2048x2048,
and compiz represents each window as a texture. Since the desktop
window is bigger than the maximum texture size, you get wierdness.

Compiz *should* be refusing to start for you. If you've told it to
SKIP_CHECKS, then you've only got yourself to blame. If you haven't,
then it would be a bug that it isn't refusing to start. There may also
be a bug in that compiz won't be disabled when you dynamically add a
second monitor - I'm not sure if this is handled.

Could you attach the contents of your /etc/xdg/compiz directory and any
~/.config/compiz directory you may have?

Fix released in Karmic. We've got the newer libdrm-nouveau pulled in
with other libdrm updates.

[Bug 374509] Re: package nouveau-kernel-source 0.0.11+git20090404-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-05-17 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
It seems this has been caused by the linux-headers 2.6.28-12-generic
package not being available during this upgrade. It seems that this was
installed later in the process, so I presume that this has fixed itself
on the next boot (ie: nouveau works)?

If that's the case, then I'm not sure there's anything more we can do -
I'm not aware of a really good way of specifying the dependency "this
package depends on the linux-headers package corresponding to the
running kernel".

Can you please attach Xorg.0.log & dmesg output? They're pretty much
the minimum possible information required for nouveau bugs?

[Bug 339189] Re: Compiz fails to grep 64bits drivers loaded

2009-03-09 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
While this is true, unless you're doing something weird the drivers
_should_ be found under /usr/lib, not /usr/lib64. Is this on some
strange system? Ubuntu policy is that native-arch libraries should be
in /usr/lib, and on an amd64 install native-arch is 64bit.

It's probably safe to change that to /usr/lib(64|32)?/..., but it might
be worth working out whether some other package is breaking policy.

[Bug 222002] Re: compiz fails to start

2009-03-09 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
What does your /etc/xdg/compiz/compiz-manager file contain? If it looks like
this:
"""
# Ubuntu specifc compiz-manager configuration file
# goes into /etc/xdg/compiz/compiz-manager
# works with git://anongit.compiz-fusion.org/fusion/misc/compiz-manager
COMPIZ_BIN_PATH="/usr/bin/"
PLUGIN_PATH="/usr/lib/compiz/"
COMPIZ_NAME="compiz.real"
"""
what does running "echo $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS" print?

like DBus crashed while Do was reading stuff using it.

Re: [Bug 284254] [NEW] Gnome-Do fails to launch fully on gnome login

2008-10-16 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hm. It (obviously) works here.

We'll need some more information to debug this. Could you please make
sure "Hide window on first launch (quiet mode)" is disabled, then log
out and log in?

Once you've logged in, verify that Do isn't working and then copy
~/.xsession-errors to ~/xsession-errors-pre. Then, run
"kill -SIGQUIT $(pidof gnome-do)" to make GNOME Do dump its state, and
copy ~/.xsession-errors to ~/xsession-errors-post. Then attach both
files to the bug.

It would also be useful to know the output of "which gnome-do".
