[Bug 192793] [NEW] comp will not turn off
Public bug reported: When I shut down Ubuntu everything goes smoothly and all of the applications show themselves as shutting down, but when the bar under the Ubuntu logo finishes the shut down process the computer makes a sound that sounds like the computer fans have turned off and the screen just stays there and the light on the computer doesn't turn off at all even if I wait for one hour. So I just press the power button and it turns off. I just want to know if it is normal for you to manualy turn it off after the screen shows that applications have shut down and the bar goes to zero? ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- comp will not turn off https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/192793 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 192793] Re: comp will not turn off
I tried the instructions you stated, before I started messing with the bios; However, the problem still was there. If, I could find out the reason(s) for all of the recent Bios Upgrades for this model of computer. That may shed some light on the shut down problem. I have an idea it is with the hibernate and sleep modes, leaving data in the ram vulnerable to prying eyes. http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2006/12/08 /windows-vista-power-management.aspx -- comp will not turn off https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/192793 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 192793] Re: comp will not turn off
I have finally found out the problem. This was a Dell Bios problem. Dell upgraded the bios version originally 1.3.0, 1.7.0, 1.8.0 and than 1.9.0. the bios are available from dell inspiron 531 download sight. the original bios 1.3.0 is a Microsoft version that is reinstallable by running from vista as admin. then upgrade to 1.7.0. DON"T upgrade any higher than 1.7.0 or Ubuntu 7.10 will not shut down from the GUI screen. I will leave it alone because I think the upgrades are for vista problems and not reall a hardware issue with the computer. I am not going to upgrade the bios for a recomendation as silly as urgent and no other more detailed explanationso I can evaluate the positive or negative aspects. Personally mine now reuns better without the upgrade. If anyone knows something about this, please leave feedback. thanks. http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/previousversions.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&impid=-1&vercnt=3&osl=en&SystemID=INSP_DSKTP_D531&catid=-1&deviceid=14246&releaseid=R176757&releasetype=BIOS&servicetag=&os=WLH&formatcnt=1&libid=1 -- comp will not turn off https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/192793 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
