[Bug 300998] [NEW] Kubuntu 8.10 Display Setting 1024 x 768 won't hold.

2008-11-22 Thread Bob Jones
Public bug reported:

I have a nVidia Geforce 7600 GS graphics board in a desktop computer. I
prefer to use a display setting of 1024 x 768. In all previous version
of Ubuntu and Kubuntu I have had no problems with setting the display to
these settings on this computer. With Ubuntu 8.10 I can set the display
to 1024 x 768 and when it restarts the display is correct. Using
Kubuntu 8.10 I can get it to take the setting without a problem using
"system settings > Display > Size & Orientation". However on restarting
my computer the display returns to the default. If I go to "system
settings > Display " it immediately returns to 1024 x 768 without any
action by me. It will then be fine until I reboot. Note that I haven't
checked if it will hold on a "logout" "login". I have had the same
problem on three different installs of 9.10 in my desktop computer. I
have also tried both the GDM and the KDM display managers and both have
the same problem. Note that I do not have this problem on my HP
Pavillion dv6000 laptop. Thank you for allowing me to submit this
report. Bob Jones

[Bug 113229] amarok causes keyboard lock

2007-05-07 Thread bob jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: amarok

Not sure how to reproduce; all I know is that after pushing a global
shortcut key, Amarok will stop playing and break my keyboard. PS/2
mouse is fine, but keyboard stops responding and even ctrl-alt-backspace
won't work. Only way to unlock the keyboard is to manually launch xkill
through a desktop shortcut and kill Amarok.

[Bug 1595096] Re: cannot create multi postfix instance by postmulti command

2016-12-15 Thread Bob Jones
Yawn.

Bug opened in June and we're now December !

I cannot comprehend why it takes Ubuntu such an inordinate amount of
time to get a bug fixed that was already fixed in the underlying release
!

16.04 has been such a bug-ridden release, just rushed out with little
QA. I'm getting rid of Ubuntu and moving to another distribution that's
more stable and faster at getting bugs fixed.

Good riddence.

Description: High-performance mail transport agent
Postfix is Wietse Venema's mail transport agent that started life as an
alternative to the widely-used Sendmail program. Postfix attempts to
be fast, easy to administer, and secure, while at the same time being
sendmail compatible enough to not upset existing users. Thus, the outside
has a sendmail-ish flavor, but the inside is completely different.

[Bug 1621864] [NEW] Don't run in a default install... PLEASE !!!

2016-09-09 Thread Bob Jones
Public bug reported:

Could someone please explain to me the dumb decision to activate LXC by
default in a default install of 16.04LTS ?

What's wrong with the obvious process that *IF* I want virtualisation, I
can either activate the service or install the package.

Why on earth run it by default and waste un-necessary resources on the
system ?

[Bug 1595096] Re: cannot create multi postfix instance by postmulti command

2016-09-09 Thread Bob Jones
"I believe this was fixed in postfix 3.1.0-3.1, which is newer than what 16.04
already had"

As usual, LTS lagging behind in picking up important bugs just as
we've seen recently in NTP ... and MySQL ... and and and

Get a grip Ubuntu ! All well and good going on about the "stability" of
LTS, but I'd rather have a "stable and usable" system rather than a
"stable an unusable" one !

I'm trying to get Postfix under 16.04 running so I can decommission some
older 14.04/12.04 instances. It is frustrating that what should
normally be a relativley simple and quick job be transformed into one
that has to be put onto the backburner for days on end !

Sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't dump Ubuntu entirely. The 16.04LTS
release has been so buggy and error prone, to this day, I fail to
understand why a *default* install of 16.04 instists on activating and
running the mdadm and LXC services when surely they should be both
blatantly be optional items, as both running RAID and Virtualisation are
blatantly optional tasks !

[Bug 1621865] [NEW] Please don't run by default on 16.04LTS !

2016-09-09 Thread Bob Jones

Could someone please explain to me the dumb decision to activate mdadm

What's wrong with the obvious process that *IF* I want RAID, I can

Why on earth run it by default and waste un-necessary resources on the

[Bug 1574168] Re: mysql-server-5.7.postinst fails with "Can't create database 'performance_schema'; database exists"

2016-07-25 Thread Bob Jones
Just after I wasted time earlier this month re-installing all my mySQL
because of the above problem, another update comes through today
(5.7.13-0ubuntu0.16.04.2), and guess what, that breaks it too.

Thanks Ubuntu... just thanks. Your QA is sloppy. Two important
packages, NTP and mySQL are currently broken on ubuntu because of sloppy
QA causing them to break after an apt-get upgrade.

At this rate I'm going to start rolling out another distro and dump
Ubuntu.

Mine isn't even a 14->16 upgrade.  Its a 16LTS based "apt-get upgrade"
of a pre-existing install (or at least it was an attempt at that ...I
can't get the darn thing to install itself no matter how I try, as I
said, I've tried resorting to removing/purging/deleting confs ...
nothing works)

Have you finished "thinking about" fixing the broken NTP in Xenial yet ?
Its becoming a bit of a joke to be without such a key package (let alone
the hacks that have had to be put in place to keep server time accurate
!).

[Bug 1611018] [NEW] Please don't hardcode locations in mysql-systemd-start !

2016-08-08 Thread Bob Jones
Public bug reported:

I'm sorry but its a bit dumb to hard-code locations in "/usr/share/mysql
/mysql-systemd-start".

Not everybody has their data in /var/lib/mysql.

Given that any update will break mysql because it overwrites /usr/share,
you really should reference these parameters from a location that won't
be messed with by updates (e.g. /etc/default/)
