[Bug 518336] Re: thunderbird-3.0: Please turn off global search by default

2010-04-29 Thread Bernd Porr
I've just installed Lucid on an X24 laptop (1.2GHz) and the indexing just kills
it. It should be really off by default. I've got a work account with 10,000s of
e-mails and subfolders and it slowed down the computer substantially down to
the level that I had to quit thunderbird to continue to work. Thunderbird feels
much slower anyway than 2.x and this makes it worse.
So, please disable indexing by default.

There are a couple of options which are now ignored under Lucid. For me
this works best:

Section "Device"
Identifier  "Configured Video Device"
Driver  "radeon"
VideoRam65536
Option  "AccelMethod" "EXA"
EndSection

[Bug 1894967] Re: Upgrade from bionic LTS to focal LTS fails because of "pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks"

2020-10-02 Thread Bernd Porr
do-release-upgrade still doesn't work.

Workaround (the Debian way):

sed -i 's/bionic/focal/g' /etc/apt/sources.list
apt update
apt -y dist-upgrade
grub-install

... which works perfectly.

[Bug 1889509] Re: grub boot error : "symbol 'grub_calloc' not found

2020-07-30 Thread Bernd Porr
Also affects my desktop Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS. Took me ages because the original
desktop boot disk for bionic just gave a blank monitor but here is a fix:
I downloaded the boot/repair iso
(https://sourceforge.net/projects/boot-repair-cd/) and created a bootable USB
disk with the startup disk creator on another Linux box.
Then I did a manual grub re-install via the terminal (didn't use the one-click
rescue of the ISO):
sudo -s
mount /dev/sdaX /mnt
grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sda

After the rescue via live USB stick one can halt updating of the grub

[Bug 1605974] Re: usbduxsigma_firmware.bin: old version causes driver crash

2016-12-18 Thread Bernd Porr
A new firmware package has arrived and the usbduxsigma file has
certainly been updated.

-rw-r--r--  1 root root 999 Apr 25  2016 usbduxfast_firmware.bin
-rw-r--r--  1 root root1770 Apr 25  2016 usbdux_firmware.bin
-rw-r--r--  1 root root8192 Nov 30 21:03 usbduxsigma_firmware.bin

So I've just cloned:
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git
and compared it to the firmware version in the just installed ubuntu xenial
linux-firmware package:

bp1@bp1-Precision-WorkStation-T5400:/lib/firmware$ diff
./usbduxsigma_firmware.bin /tmp/linux-firmware/usbduxsigma_firmware.bin
Binary files ./usbduxsigma_firmware.bin and
/tmp/linux-firmware/usbduxsigma_firmware.bin differ
bp1@bp1-Precision-WorkStation-T5400:/lib/firmware$

Even that the timestamp has changed to Nov 30th it's still not the
version in linux-firmware.git!

Frustrating.

[Bug 1611532] [NEW] bluetooth USB dongle CSR8510 causes system freeze

2016-08-09 Thread Bernd Porr
Public bug reported:

- Do a rfcomm bind.
- Try a cat /dev/rfcomm0
In about 50% of cases the system completely freezes. In the other 40% the
rfcomm data is garbled. In the remaining 10% the data is fine.
The bt device at the other end is an RN42 which transmits text data.

When scanning for devices often the bt name is not displayed or is shown
as unknown.

It worked perfectly under the previous LTS (precise) which was a 32 bit
version.

The xenial I'm using now is a 64bit version.

I've tried it on two computers and the behaviour is the same (both 64
bit versions)

Also tested with Broadcom 20702A0 bluetooth 4 dongle.
Similar problem: here at low bitrates a bit more stable but loses connection
after a while plus data corruption but no fatal crash.
Tested with kernel version: 4.5.4-1 and 4.6.0-1 both 64 bit.

[Bug 1611532] Re: bluetooth USB dongle CSR8510 causes system freeze

2016-08-11 Thread Bernd Porr
Tested on:
Linux bp1-ThinkPad-X220 4.8.0-040800rc1-generic #201608072231 SMP Mon Aug 8
02:33:57 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The rfcomm connection is as unreliable as before.
I've attached a file where I transmit comma separated data from a bluetooth
device. The data is corrupted from time to time. There are 125 lines / sec
transmitted which is well within the permitted bandwidth. The file was created
by "cat /dev/rfcomm > rfcomm.dat".
After a couple of seconds the connection is broken and cat returns to the
command line. The same happens with putty (baudrate set to 230,000 but doesn't
matter which I set).

The same transmission works perfectly under both Windows (via putty) and
Android. I had it running there for many hours without any data
corruption and/or crashes. Under Android I tested it with a terminal
program and I've also written a custom app which runs fine. Under
Windows only via terminal.

on
4.8.0-rc1+ #1 SMP Fri Aug 12 15:49:49 BST 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
which works fine if the datarate is not too high (approx 50kbps) but becomes
unreliable at higher data rates.
Decive discovery is also very reliable.
With this dongle is close-ish to the kernel 3.x performance.

[Bug 1079950] Re: netcat-traditional stops listening after one packet in UDP broadcast mode

2017-07-14 Thread Bernd Porr
I'm having exactly the same problem. I'm transmitting data with my
program attys_scope. It's using QT for the UDP transmit and under
Windows it works. Under Linux it won't. I've tried the nc -klu and it
also just gives one line back. However the same problem arises when I
use a python program which reads from the UDP socket. Under Windows it
works. Under Linux it doesn't. So it might be something deeper in the
kernel.

Python script which works under Windows but not under Linux:
# socket connection to attys_scope
s = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET,socket.SOCK_DGRAM)
listen_addr = ("",65000)
s.bind(listen_addr)
f = s.makefile()

# init the amplitudes
amplitudes = np.zeros(2)

# for the thread below
doRun = True

# read data from the udp socket into two variables
# note you need to have at least two analoge channels on
# this just overwrites the amplitudes as fast as possible
# for an oscilloscope plot we need a proper ringbuffer here!
def readSocket():
global amplitudes
while doRun:
# check if data is available
data = f.readline()
values = np.array(data.split(','),dtype=np.float32)
values = np.fabs(values)
amplitudes = values[9:11]

bp1@bp1-Precision-WorkStation-T5400:~/sandbox/attys_scope/python$ nc -klu 65000
491.859985,-30.928297,7.316680,-2.791639,0.13,-0.20,0.15,0.247545,0.001498,-0.000834,0.001498

QT program which transmits the datagrams (inspired by the QT examples which
won't require a bind):

void ScopeWindow::startUDP(int port)
{
udpSocket = new QUdpSocket(this);
udpPort = port;
_RPT1(0, "UDP transmit on port %d\n",port);
}

void ScopeWindow::stopUDP()
{
delete udpSocket;
udpSocket = NULL;
}

void ScopeWindow::writeUDP() {
if (!udpSocket) return;
char tmp[256];
sprintf(tmp, "%f", ((float)nsamples) /
((float)attysComm[0]->getSamplingRateInHz()));
for (int n = 0; n < nAttysDevices; n++) {
int nFiltered = 0;
for (int i = 0; i < channels_in_use; i++) {
if (attys_scope->channel[n][i]->isActive()) {
nFiltered++;
}
float phy = unfiltDAQData[n][i];
sprintf(tmp+strlen(tmp), ",%f", phy);
}
for (int i = 0; i < nFiltered; i++) {
float phy = filtDAQData[n][i];
sprintf(tmp+strlen(tmp), ",%f", phy);
}
}
sprintf(tmp+strlen(tmp), "\n");
if (udpSocket) {
if (udpStatus > -1) {
udpStatus = udpSocket->writeDatagram(tmp, strlen(tmp),
QHostAddress::Broadcast, udpPort);
//_RPT1(0, "%s", tmp);
}
}
}

This script works find under Windows. I use s similar programs as nc under
Windows and there everything is fine.

Kernel issue?

[Bug 1605974] [NEW] usbduxsigma_firmware.bin: old version causes driver crash

2016-07-24 Thread Bernd Porr
Public bug reported:

The firmware of the usbduxsigma (alongside with the usbduxsigma.c) was
updated in 2015 during a major rewrite but its binary was still the old
one which causes the kernel driver to fail.

I've submitted a patch to the kernel people (see below).

However, as a quick fix could you also apply the patch to the package
directly to have this fixed now and then we can wait until it trickles
down from the kernel.

I'm the maintainer of both the firmware and the drivers.

This affects both 32 and 64 bit distros.

Best,
/Bernd Porr (www.linux-usb-daq.co.uk)

[Bug 1611532] Re: bluetooth USB dongle CSR8510 causes system freeze

2016-09-02 Thread Bernd Porr
Just tested with 4.8-rc4: no ethernet, no bluetooth at all and graphics
defaults to VGA only.
Booted back to the stock ubuntu xenial kernel and bluetooth/network is back up
running.
Looks to me like a massive regression.
All tested on an X220 laptop.

Not that I'm aware of. I had 32bit and 64bit versions running and it was
fine. Though I did most development under 32bit prior to 16.04 but some
also under 64bit.

[Bug 1605974] Re: usbduxsigma_firmware.bin: old version causes driver crash

2016-10-12 Thread Bernd Porr
The linux firmware has been updated and the usbduxsigma firmware as
well. However it's still the _old_ firmware.

See the diff between the kernel git and what ubuntu has:
bp1@bp1-Precision-WorkStation-T5400:/tmp/linux-firmware$ diff
usbduxsigma_firmware.bin /lib/firmware/usbduxsigma_firmware.bin
Binary files usbduxsigma_firmware.bin and
/lib/firmware/usbduxsigma_firmware.bin differ

[Bug 1605974] Re: usbduxsigma_firmware.bin: old version causes driver crash

2016-10-21 Thread Bernd Porr
This has been reported in July and the firmware still hasn't been
updated. I'm using the board in teaching at my university and now we
have to manually copy the new firmware version. It's been available
upstream for ages but it's still not in the ubuntu firmware package.
It's very disappointing.

It would be probably very benefical to commit all bug fixes from the
latest linux stable for the comedi branch. In order to get this moved to
the normal driver tree loads of tidying up has happend last year which
inevitably has lead to new bugs which we sorted in Jan and are now in
the latest stable kernel.

[Bug 981234] [NEW] buffer overflows in comedi drivers

2012-04-13 Thread Bernd Porr
Public bug reported:

There asynchronous buffer for the COMEDI drivers is only 65k and is hard coded
in the kernel. With slower computers and slow userspace programs there is
virtually always a buffer overflow which makes it impossible to run these
programs, especially with DAQ cards which have a high resolution or those with
high sampling rate.
I'm attaching a patch which has been submitted and accepted upstream. Below the
confirmation e-mail from Gregkh:

Subject: staging: comedi: Add kernel config for default buffer sizes

Allow the default values for the module parameters for the default
initial buffer size and default maximum buffer size to be specified in
the kernel configuration.

I'm not sure what the defaults for the defaults for the defaults should
be, but 64 KiB seems to small, so I used values suggested by Bernd Porr,
which are 2048 KiB for the default initial buffer size and 20480 for the
default maximum buffer size.

I can confirm this or a similar crash. In my case there is nothing in

[Bug 982649] [NEW] installer crashes silently after username/passwd input

2012-04-15 Thread Bernd Porr
Public bug reported:

When using the desktop install the installer just terminates in the
middle of the install. This happens after all data has been input.
Basically after the username / password has been typed in.

I've run the installer then in a terminal but there is no error output
and none of the log files shows any error.

I've used then the alternate install and that ran without any problems.

[Bug 1281298] Re: kernel oops when unplugging usbdux

2014-06-03 Thread Bernd Porr
this patch fixes it:

https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-
stable.git/commit/drivers/staging/comedi?id=52ef9e7cb317fcb7f8b63f1bec7271e40341ce98

however as I said before I would recommend applying all patches up to
the current stable kernel because we did quite a lot of cleanup work.

I'm happy to test any patched kernels.

[Bug 1281298] Re: kernel oops when unplugging usbdux

2014-07-01 Thread Bernd Porr
I've tested with the 3.14 kernel from the ubuntu PPA and it works perfectly
with it.
Linux bp1-Dimension-9100 3.14.1-031401-generic #201404141220 SMP Mon Apr 14
16:21:48 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Also the 3.15 kernel from the ubuntu PPA it works perfectly.
Linux bp1-x61 3.15.0-031500-generic #201406131105 SMP Fri Jun 13 15:26:26 UTC
2014 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux

In the comedi project we worked pretty hard to have a perfect version of
comedi in the 3.14 kernel so would love to see this version in the
ubuntu Trusty LTS.

[Bug 1357262] [NEW] GeForce 8800 crash: nouveau DATA_ERROR INVALID_VALUE

2014-08-15 Thread Bernd Porr
Public bug reported:

I've installed a fresh x64 Trusty 14.04.1 LTS.

In dmesg I get:
[   73.993259] nouveau E[  PGRAPH][:01:00.0] DATA_ERROR INVALID_VALUE
[   73.993269] nouveau E[  PGRAPH][:01:00.0]  DATA_ERROR

subc 2 class 0x502d mthd 0x0284 data 0x0008e6a0

then after a while the screen freezes, the mouse pointer won't move to
the second monitor and Ctrl-Alt-F1 won't switch to the text mode. Only
solution is to switch it off.

The compuer works fine in the text mode.

It's a dual monitor setup.

[Bug 1357262] Re: GeForce 8800 crash: nouveau DATA_ERROR INVALID_VALUE

2014-08-15 Thread Bernd Porr
I've run 'tail -f /var/log/kern.log' while I was working. The system crashes
hard when I mark a region in the terminal. There seems to be _no_ kernel panic
happening but random code execution. After about a minute the screen turns into
random patterns! So, to prevent data corruption I switched it off.
I've tested with the 3.13 stock kernel and with the 3.14 kernel from the ununtu
PPA. The photo is taken from the 3.14 kernel run.

I can confirm that this is happening on precise. I get the password
prompted every minute which makes working with wireless completely
useless.

[Bug 1092519] [NEW] xhci timeouts while reading / writing to a 3.0 card reader

2012-12-20 Thread Bernd Porr

reader is a Transcend 3.0. It works fine under USB 2.0 (plugged into a
2.0 port) and under Windows 7 (2.0 and 3.0).

[Bug 563436] Re: comedi drivers are missing completley in the /lib/modules dir

2010-06-14 Thread Bernd Porr
I've just tested it with the USBDUX board and ktimetrace and it's
working fine. I've also compiled comedirecord with QT4 and that worked
also without any problems.

[Bug 1894967] [NEW] Upgrade from bionic LTS to focal LTS fails because of "pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks"

2020-09-09 Thread Bernd Porr
Public bug reported:

main.log gives this error:

2020-09-09 10:15:03,237 ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'E:Error,
pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held
packages.'

however, there is no hint in the log files what that might be. I have a
few PPAs but none of them are flagged up in the log files. Neither
apt.log nor mail.log.

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11 after logging "MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events handled properly?"

2024-08-16 Thread Bernd Porr
I have:
NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 560.28.03 Thu Jul 18 19:32:18
UTC 2024
GCC version: gcc version 11.4.0 (Ubuntu 11.4.0-1ubuntu1~22.04)
Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS
Mutter is: 42.9-0ubuntu
and it's still terribly laggy. I'm using cuda so not all kernel drivers will
work but could try another nvidia driver if that solves it?

[Bug 2070184] [NEW] Gnome terminal input lag

2024-06-24 Thread Bernd Porr
Public bug reported:

I expect instantaneous reactions to key strokes when typing into a terminal.
What happens: long lags when tying into the gnome terminal.

To reproduce:
- open standard gnome terminal
- type or press enter
- Slow response to key strokes up to one second. It's very hard to do any kind
of productive work.
This affects any key input so that also remote ssh sessions are affected.

2025-02-01 Thread Bernd Porr
Just did a "do-release-upgrade" from jammy to noble. Went all OK with
only one minor package config problem in boost. Typed reboot. Now at
this. Same error message as reported by the users above.

[Bug 2065476] Re: During boot, after grub selection screen, it appears "error: sparse file not allowed - Aborted. Press any key to exit."

2025-02-01 Thread Bernd Porr
Downloaded the boot repair disk:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/boot-repair-cd/
Repaired it. Turns out that a lot of packages were not configured. Also not
grub.
The package which made the installer to trip over is: libhdf5-openmpi-dev and
in particular the pre-removal script.
(Reading database ... 1786310 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing libhdf5-openmpi-dev (1.10.7+repack-4ubuntu2) ...

update-alternatives: using /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pkgconfig/hdf5-openmpi.pc

Processing was halted because there were too many errors.
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

So I just deleted these scripts...

root@eeapp:/home/bp1# rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/libhdf5-openmpi-dev.prerm
root@eeapp:/home/bp1# rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/libhdf5-openmpi-dev.postinst

... and now the upgrade continues.

Note that this libhdf5-openmpi-dev bug has been around for donkeys. But
I guess for the others it might have been a different script which
bombed during the upgrade.
