This problem disappeared for me after I checked "Delete after N Days" checkbox, and set N to something short, like 1. Before, I had neither that nor "Leave messages on server" checked. [Bug 144305] Re: [gutsy] sleep on powerbook crashes
With a bit more digging, it seems that for some reason, the APM emulation isn't doing the job it used to do of having X cleanup properly for suspend. It could be a bug with the recent X servers or ATI drivers, that's unclear. However, rather than trying to fix that, the best solution is to do like x86 does with ACPI and basically use scripts to trigger a VT switch. That will be more solid anyway. The ACPI scripts are not useable as-is with /etc/power as they assume that env. variables can be set in suspend and re-used in resume. So I've hacked a pair of scripts that can be put in /etc/power/suspend.d and /etc/power/resume.d for powerpc (though they wouldn't hurt old style APM based x86 either I believe). Those are a bit on the hackish side of things but they do the job fine for me, please do something similar to fix the problem in gutsy ! - console-switch-out (in suspend.d): #!/bin/sh # And remember which console we're on fgconsole >/tmp/saved-fg-console # Change away from X, otherwise it'll blow up when we POST the video interface chvt 12 - console-switch-in (in resume.d): #!/bin/sh CONSOLE=`cat /tmp/saved-fg-console` rm /tmp/saved-fg-console chvt $CONSOLE -- [gutsy] sleep on powerbook crashes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/144305 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Today's hardy alternate CD install for PS3 fails to install due to a failure to configure the "initscripts" package. The failure root cause is that it tries to mount spufs on /spu but that filesystem is not part of whatever comes with the kernel on that installer CD. I believe the problem is two fold here: - First, I suspect it might be a good idea to have the spufs module present and loaded on the installer kernel - Second, even without that, the initscripts package should not fail configuration if it can't mount spufs, there is nothing fatal about that especially for the distro install. Finally, I found it hard to "fix it up" from a console because after I hacked the postinst script to not attempt the mount, I could configure the package manually fine. But the installer GUI still fails, because it retries I suppose dpkg --configure which stupidly -fails- if the package is already configured ! (it's a bit lame). Maybe the installer should also be made a bit more smart in that area. ** Affects: sysvinit (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- initscripts fails configure on ps3 install https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/221626 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 221646] [NEW] CONFIG_VIRTUAL_MMAP=y is a PS3 killer
Public bug reported: The hard powerpc64 kernel is having serious trouble on PS3. Basically, I have only about 88M of memory available after boot which makes it pretty much unuseable. The main reason for that is CONFIG_VIRTUAL_MMAP=y. This feature has been designed for larger memory machines such as G5s or pSeries and triggers a worst-case scenario on the PS3 in part due to how memory is laid out by the hypervisor. It causes the kernel to use a crapload of memory for the memory map and still fail to add the necessary bit to be able to register the "additional" memory (the PS3 memory is split in 128M boot RAM and some additional memory given to linux by the HV later during boot). I might be able to improve the situation in the kernel but not right now and it might not make it before .26 or .27 so ubuntu should probably disable that option at least for PS3 kernels. I know PS3 uses the same kernel builds as other ppc64 which can be an issue, but basically, it's unuseable with that option set. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- CONFIG_VIRTUAL_MMAP=y is a PS3 killer https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/221646 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Yes, I wrote that patch after I filed this bug report :-) I decided to dig a bit more into the problem and found that we needed a proper long term solution, not only on PS3 but on anything with a small memory footprint in fact (in theory, the same problem would happen with POWER5 or 6 partitions that are started with a small amount of memory for example). -- CONFIG_VIRTUAL_MMAP=y is a PS3 killer https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/221646 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 220524] Re: Only 86MB of RAM shown available on PS3 in Hardy
The patch should do the trick without needing to use a customer flavour of the kernel. I do recommend lowering the size of the PS3 FB though that can be done in a common kernel. I'm having paulus review the patch closely and send it to linus for .26. [Bug 141119] [gutsy] X locks on console switch on powerbook
Public bug reported: On a powerbook (aluminium G4 14" latest model with RV350 ATI), switching to console and back to X locks up the system. The switch to text console works fine. When switching back to X, it locks up before X displays anything (you see the X VT's text content but X doesn't actually get a chance to display anything). It spins in a loop eating CPU, I haven't yet found where, it takes no input. kill -9 works and you can then restart X, it will work fine, so it doesn't look like a GPU crash. It could be an upstream regression. A quick chat with the X.org ATI driver maintainers seems to result in him strongly suggesting ubuntu updates to version 6.7.193 of the driver which according to him contains lots of bug fixes. [Bug 144305] [gutsy] sleep on powerbook crashes
Public bug reported: On gutsy, trying to put the powerbook to sleep (by closing the lid for example) causes the machine to crash with a PMU shutdown, which also has the side effect of losing the content of the real time clock. Very annoying. It works with Edgy. I've verified that the kernel sleep stuff is working properly by sending the appropriate ioctl to /dev/pmu. So it's something being done by userland. One possibility that I have to investigate is that maybe userspace is using the /sys/power/state file which doesn't work properly on powerbooks, instead of the custom ioctl. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [gutsy] sleep on powerbook crashes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/144305 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 144305] Re: [gutsy] sleep on powerbook crashes
Looks like I wasn't completely right above. I don't know yet whether userspace is using the ioctl or not, but it seems that calling the ioctl directly also fails when X is frontmost. Among other things I've noticed: - the APM emulation module isn't loaded by default. - the kernel isn't switching to text console before suspend The 2 above together means that X has no chance to quiesce the graphics engine and properly re-initialize it on wakeup, which probably explains some of the problems. I've manually loaded apm-emu and restart X, but that didn't fully fix the problem, so there is still something else going on. I'll try to investigate and let you know. In the meantime, apm-emu should definitely be added to the loaded-by-default list of modules at least on powerbooks. -- [gutsy] sleep on powerbook crashes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/144305 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Henrik, just a question: How can you decide whether a fix for this bug meets a release criteria considering that there is no fix available yet to judge ? :-) We still don't know what the problem is, it'seems to be a HW issue and there is no good workaround available neither at the moment (and irqpoll is certainly not a useable workaround). Once the problem is found, the fix may be as simple as a BIOS update, in which case there is just no point triaging it like that, or could be a one liner quirk, which could easily be applied to a stable release as this is a pretty severe bug... but we can't tell, we just don't know yet. -- kernel disables irq after 10 minutes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/126369 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 132106] Re: [gutsy] keyspan serial adapter not detected
The changelog from Ben Collins doesn't mention a licensing issue. As far as I know, only Debian has issue with the firmwares, other distros don't, and they are part of the upstream kernel sources. In fact, the simple fact that Ubuntu kernel source actually ships with the firmwares included makes it a totally moot point. Not enabling them doesn't "fix" a possible licence incompatibility since they are shipped :-) Hopefully, this is just a mistake from Ben thinking the keyspan_pda driver is a _replacement_ for the other one. It's not. The keyspan_pda is a different (and simpler, it's not very reliable at higher speeds) piece of hardware that uses a different driver. The main keyspan serial driver is still needed for most keyspan serial adapters (including mines ! [Bug 205384] [NEW] [hardy] installer failure with existing RAID+LVM setup
Public bug reported: The existing setup is: Quad G5, two SATA disks, various partitions (/boot etc...) directly there, one big MD partition on each drive. Togegher, those form a RAID0. That RAID0 is then setup as an LVM PV into with 4 logical volumes (including root, /home, etc..) I busted the gutsy install there (bad manipulation on my part) so I'm trying to install Hardy using an alternate iso snapshot as of yesterday (Mars 22, 2008). When I do "configure RAID", then just "Finish", it detects the MD properly and shows it's LVM PV. When I do "configure LVM", it discovers all the LVs, I can then go back and see all my logical volumes in the list. I set their filesystem and mount points, so far so good, then I do "finish partitionning", at which points things go bonkers: - First it says it will have to write the RAID 0 partition map to disk (despite the fact that I didn't change a thing to do). - Then it complains that the kernel ioctl failed (invalid argument iirc) and I'll have to reboot. I choose "continue" as the partition map hasn't changed, so it should all be fine. - Nothing happens. The installer screen is empty and nothing happens Now if I try to go to the other VT to get some logs etc... I get nothing there, just black screen on a black background. The cusor blinks fine and move, but it looks like somewhat the installer is setting the text color of the other console as black on black ! It -seems- that it works the very first time I switch VT and only gets in that black/black state on subsequent switches, thus I will try to use that to see if I can get some logs though it might be useful to guide me (that is tell me where to look for useful info). ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [hardy] installer failure with existing RAID+LVM setup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/205384 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Ok so in the "nothing happens" state, in fact, if you wait long enough (that is something like 10mn or more), it ends up continuing the install. So it's not broken, just weirdly very very slow at this stage. So you can downgrade the bug to cosmetic, I would suggest fixing these: - It should be smarter at figuring out that it doesn't need to write back the RAID partition map when you didn't change it, the error message is confusing if not scary. - It should have some progress message or at least some "please wait" right after it so people know it's not actually dead (currently, it's a blank/red screen with no text) -- [hardy] installer failure with existing RAID+LVM setup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/205384 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

correction... it boots, but after it switches to ncurses, I don't have any text displayed. I see the blue background, I see the red of the active button, I see the blinking cursor in console mode, but it generally acts as if the console font had been turned to ... nothing. I do see the text before it gets to the installer, it breaks about when it starts the nucurses installer. I haven't tried live as it clearly says it can't install from live due to lack of RAM. [Bug 204937] Re: [hardy] kernel oops triggered by trackerd
Note to the triagers: while I can't exclude the possibility, it doesn't smell like an architecture bug to me, more like a generic bug. The quad is SMPx4 and I was doing extensive disk accesses while trackerd was running, using multiple filesystems (ext3 and xfs), so the kernel was quite "exercized" in ways that I suspect a lot of users don't, which would explain why this didnt' show up on x86. [Bug 93509] Re: xorg fails with ati driver with feisty on Apple ppc (post herd5 update)
As-is, the X.org x86emu doesn't work properly on pretty much all ppc machines. That's why the normal int10 soft-boot path is #if !defined(__powerpc__) already in the driver. It seems like ubuntu applied a patch to X.org ATI driver that causes it to use VBE for EDID in many cases where it wouldn't happen before, thus causing the breakage on machines where VBE won't work properly. I've discussed with some of the X hackers who are working on the X ATI driver and they seem fairly unhappy about this patch in the first place. I think at least, the VBE bit should be made #if !defined(__powerpc__) as well. -- xorg fails with ati driver with feisty on Apple ppc (post herd5 update) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/93509 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
