Re: [Bug 304954] Re: IO errors when inserting a disc
Hi, My bad all, it was the libdvdecss issue - one would have thought that the software could detect the lack of libdvdcss or equivalent, however that may be tricky politically or legally. I can confirm this is an issue with Hardy Heron on a Dell Latitude 610. [Bug 122271] 'Hardware Information' did not run
Public bug reported: Linux Mint 3.0 'Cassandra' running as Live CD on intel P4 2.5Ghz 1.5GB RAM, 120GB & 80GB HDD, GeForce MX460 64MB video set to 1280x1024 Using either - Control Panel > Hardware Information - or - Preferences > Hardware Information produces an 'Application problem' box that reports:- "Hardware Information closed unexpectedly" This looks like several other problems in the bug list - but this is a fresh copy of Linux Mint that supposedly was released after the patches referred to in #85421 So this may be a release issue, or indeed finger trouble on my part. [Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in "error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found"
just a few thoughts (opinions ;) )... I have posted previously in the thread and followed it since then. I sympathise with both sides - both 'its a bug' and 'its the user' but on consideration IMHO neither are 100% right. My hardware is a Dell box with an Intel RAID controller set up with one volume mirroring a pair of 400(ish)Gb drives. As previously stated I installed 13.04 last year (LVM enabled) on a clean machine (no operating system) then this year upgraded to 13.10 successfully and then bricked the box with 14.04. At no time did I run boot-repair on the 13.x installs - if a boot loader is working I leave it well alone. So from an end user point of view there is a bug - a normal upgrade bricked my machine with no warning. Where that bug lies is kind of hard to pin down. I have since set up a Virtualbox to try to replicate the issue - unfortunately(!) the upgrade chain didn't fail. VirtualBox does not allow the emulation of hardware RAID controllers and I _think_ that this may be where the root cause of issue lies. It may be that the new version of grub installed by the system upgrade doesn't handle the LVM/HW RAID combination particularly well. As to not being able to detect the issue that caused the bricking of many machines - that is not strictly true is it? Us human end users are detecting the issue using standard tools available to the upgrade process. The big problem from a dev/support point of view is that there appears no auditable set of actions that can reproduce the issue - and I know that I am not about to tear down my now working 14.04 install, wipe the disks and start again from 13.04 just to prove (or not) a point - life is too short! Other end users are probably in the same position. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1289977 Title: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in "error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1289977/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in "error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found"
Another case here... Desktop system, vanilla install of xubuntu 13.04 last year (August I think), updated as and when with patches. Last update was yesterday before the dist upgrade. Upgraded yesterday to 13.10 with no issues at all. Upgraded today and got the symbol not found error. Interestingly when I try to load the linux module from the grub rescue prompt by hand I get the same error - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1599293 hinted at how to perhaps get linux to boot from the rescue prompt. I eventually worked around the issue by downloading a 13.10 image, booting and using the boot repair utility as described http://iambusychangingtheworld.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/error-symbol- grubtermhighlightcolor-not.html Using the above webpage the process asks where to install GRUB - I picked the RAID volume, rebooted when instructed to by boot-repair and everything works. I guess I will have to wait 6 months before trying the next update to see if a rinse and repeat is required - I guess I could do the same boot repair with a 14.04 live CD, or leave that to another user to try. The desktop has an Intel hardware RAID controller - two 400gb disks mirrored; Grub was set to boot off the RAID volume. Looking up the thread if the previous version of grub, installed with 13.04/13.10 didn't mind about the RAID and the upgrade-manager installed version does that would explain how the work around works. the boot-repair log can be found at http://paste.ubuntu.com/7338702/ is it is of any use. [Bug 576290] Re: Last upload renders contact list empty
One further comment - empathy, even though it fails to render the contact list, still displays server related errors in the contact list pane. For example empathy starts up rather more quickly than the wireless connection - the contact pane displayed has the red bar complete with text etc. about the error. This then goes away when the wireless connects and the accounts can be logged in to the server. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/576290 Title: Last upload renders contact list empty To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/576290/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
