[Bug 316252] Re: Unable to retrieve MSN Address Book

2009-01-12 Thread Ben Romer
The msn-pecan WLM workaround fails for me, with "unknown error code
403." Apparently this means that my contact list is not available,
which is not all that different from the original error with the MSN
plug-in.

[Bug 74070] Re: Google Calendar ics support

2008-02-09 Thread Ben Romer
I was also having this problem on Gutsy, but I believe I have found the
issue and a workaround. I use a laptop, and when I log in the network
connection is not established. However, if I understand how Evolution
works, the evolution-data-server process is already started and appears
to be retaining the unconfigured network state.

If you open up a terminal and do an evolution --force-shutdown, then
restart evolution while you have a network connection established,
Evolution seems to be able to get to the calendars after that.

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close"

2010-03-15 Thread Ben Romer
So in the *ahem* "light" of this declaration, should we file bugs for
applications that do not consistently follow the "close goes on the
left" style within closable UI elements like tabs - for instance,
Nautilus (both in the sidebar and the file manager tabs) and Firefox?
Shouldn't these apps be patched so to respect the window manager's
preference?

There is poll data available: The Ubuntu Forums have a poll
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1422422) where 76% prefer the
right side, and OMG Ubuntu has a similar poll
(http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/03/poll-do-you-want-ubuntu-window-
controls.html) with their readers preferring 79% to the right. Ubuntu
Brainstorm has this issue as the #1 item with 611 votes for the right
side versus -11 for the left (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/23899/).

[Bug 548796] [NEW] window control button border discolored

2010-03-26 Thread Ben Romer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: light-themes

After the recent update to the theme, if you look closely at the window
control buttons in the active window, you'll notice that there is a
rectangular box around the border/depression/divet part of the theme's
buttons that doesn't match the rest of the window titlebar. Unselected
windows don't appear discolored in the same way.

Obviously not a huge problem, but it was not like this on the previous
version (IIRC) and it's not as pretty as it could be if it matched. :)

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close"

2010-03-18 Thread Ben Romer
Can we please focus this bug on the actual problems? There are at least two
that have been reported:
- The theme preview in the GNOME appearance panel shows the buttons on the
right for these themes.
- Switching to the theme moves the buttons to the left, but switching away from
the theme does not restore them to the right.

Perhaps the first problem could be fixed, and the second dealt with by
having a "light-themes-right" package, or right-handed versions of the
themes included in the light-themes package. Then, it's just three
clicks (system->preferences->Appearance, Theme, Ambiance-Right or
Radiance-Right) to the old way instead of a command-line workaround that
might scare new users.

[Bug 452149] Re: Humanity delete icon use the wrong concept

2009-10-20 Thread Ben Romer
Hi, I'm arriving from my duplicate bug report #454013 and after reading
the comments here, I strongly concur with Lionel as well. I disagree
strongly with the comment about implied recoverability - there are
situations in Nautilus where "move to trash" does not allow for
reversal, such as when a file on an SFTP filesystem is "moved to trash."

Also, as important as the shell is, it's not the only app that people
use and the icon being displayed is consistently incorrect in several
major applications - GIMP, Evolution, context menus in Liferea, context
menus in Gnumeric, even the bookmark menu in Firefox. Despite what one
application may want to insist on, the vast majority of other apps use
gtk-delete to mean deletion, and expecting them all to switch to gtk-
remove because of one contentious icon in the default Ubuntu theme is
not practical.

>From a usability standpoint, the icons that appear for stock GTK
controls have the red no circle mapped to gtk-delete, while *a trash can
with an undo arrow* is mapped to gtk-undelete. This is inconsistent.
Please take a look at the stock button settings for gtk-delete and gtk-
undelete (fire up gazpacho or glade and look if you don't believe me).

Why is this hard to fix? Isn't changing the icon mapping simply putting
a different icon in the right spots in /usr/share/icons/Human/?

[Bug 452149] Re: Humanity delete icon use the wrong concept

2009-10-21 Thread Ben Romer
To fix this problem temporarily, I did the following:

$ cd /usr/share/icons
$ sudo cp -r Humanity Humanity-fixed
$ cd Humanity-fixed
$ sudo vi index.theme

Change the theme name to "Humanity-fixed", then :wq to save the file

$ sudo find . -name \*delete\* -exec rm {} \;

Then go into the Theme tab on System->Preferences->Appearance, Customize
your theme and choose Humanity-fixed from the Icons tab, and the GNOME
trashcan icon will be used instead.

Of course, this also means that fixing this problem is simply a matter
of removing the offending icon files from the theme.

[Bug 452149] Re: Humanity delete icon uses a wrong concept

2009-12-27 Thread Ben Romer
GEdit has Edit->Delete, and is an undoable action, but still gets the
ISO No symbol. This is incorrect given this new definition about what
GTK_EDIT_DELETE is supposed to mean, but how would this be corrected?
What would we change the stock icon to for the trash can to be
displayed?

Further, if I enable the Delete action in Nautilus, I get the ISO No
symbol and not the minus sign, meaning that even the shell has it wrong.

This change of meaning was not well thought out and I question the
sanity of telling every application developer that GTK_EDIT_DELETE
doesn't actually mean "delete". Does it really make sense to require a
patch and rebuild of *every*single*app* that uses it because someone
decided that they wanted to change the semantics of the word "delete"?
And GTK_LIST_REMOVE is inappropriate for text and anything else that
isn't a list, so what are we to use then?

Suggestions:

Take this change and put it to a general vote, with the icon team
getting one vote, and every single app developer affected by this change
one vote. A simple "Should the use of GTK_EDIT_DELETE imply
reversability?" yea or nay vote should work.

Or, leave GTK_EDIT_DELETE alone, and in the next version of GTK,
introduce a GTK_EDIT_UNDOABLE_DELETE that has the new semantics, and
*request* developers to switch to the new one for undoable deletes. Link
GTK_EDIT_DELETE to the minus sign and GTK_EDIT_UNDOABLE_DELETE to the
trash can.

Or, in the next version of GTK, make GTK_EDIT_DELETE obsolete, and
replace it with some other constants like GTK_UNDOABLE_DELETE and
GTK_PERMANENT_DELETE to force developers to use the new semantics.

In any case, you really ought to put the trash icon back in for the
current release, as the ISO No symbol is completely inappropriate for
the act of deletion in any context, undoable or not, and is graphically
inconsistent with the icon *currently* displayed for GTK_UNDELETE. I
suppose the icon is meant as a "don't use" hint for developers who are
using the Humanity theme during development, but the correct way to tell
them is to deprecate or obsolete the constant for it.

Also: is there a bug tracker on the GNOME website that those of us who
feel strongly about this issue should be following? The GIT patch link
in comment 14 above appears to be invalid now, and I'd like to actually
participate in the discussion, if possible.

[Bug 452149] Re: Humanity delete icon uses a wrong concept

2009-12-28 Thread Ben Romer
I agree to all of that - the biggest issue is convincing everybody to
switch the meaning, and even if that were easily possible, there are
apps like GEdit which don't have any way to properly represent what they
do.

I'm all in favor of removing the ISO No symbol and letting Gnome sort it
out - it's the simplest fix that doesn't require both the apps and the
online help to be rewritten, and it'll buy some time for the actual
meaning of delete to be worked out. :)

[Bug 454013] Re: Incorrect Icon Displayed in Empathy Account Manager

2009-10-19 Thread Ben Romer
IMHO, the icon was wrong, not the help. That red circle is an
internationally-recognized standard icon (see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_sign) and doesn't mean "delete" - it
would be more correct to have the recycle bin icon as described in the
help. Looking at other apps, I notice that Evolution has the same
(incorrect IMHO) icon used for Delete.

When I saw the icons as in the screenshot I attached, I thought my
accounts were disabled, not that I could delete them by clicking on the
red circle.

[Bug 1763065] [NEW] Feature freeze exception for kpatch 0.5.0

2018-04-11 Thread Ben Romer
Public bug reported:

The kpatch package needs to be updated to support bionic.

The updated package contains fixes for these bugs:
- kpatch-dkms 0.3.2-1ubuntu4.2: kpatch kernel module failed to build (#1665613)
- kpatch ADT test failures with 4.10 kernels (#1659581)

The upstream source for kpatch does not use changelogs. The git commit record
can be
found at:
https://github.com/dynup/kpatch/commits/0.5.0

This package update contains all upstream commits between v0.3.2 and 0.5.0, as
well as a set of
Ubuntu-specific changes:
- to safely patch ubuntu kernels, we must build the way ubuntu kernels are
built and not just use the mainline kernel's makefile.
- we must use the paths for binaries where they are installed via debian
package.
- support is added for ubuntu's included external packages. (ZFS)
- support is added for ubuntu kernel flavors. (generic, lowlatency)

Testing that was performed: (logs will be attached for all items)
- building using pbuilder and installing and removing the debians
- building the DKMS module and installing it
- building a livepatch module from a source patch

[Bug 1837886] Re: kpatch 0.5.0-0ubuntu2 ADT test failure with linux 5.3.0-0.1

2019-08-28 Thread Ben Romer
Currently, Ubuntu uses the livepatch interface built into our kernels
since 4.15.0. The kpatch interface is an older method for doing in-place
patching that predates livepatch, but is included in our 4.4 kernels, so
our livepatch users do not need or use the DKMS module on any of our
kernels.

According to the upstream issue tracker for kpatch, the specific problem
here is:

"tglx renovated the stack trace code for 5.2 (see patchset in lkml
archive), changing struct stack_trace and its related APIs.

Sooner or later we're going to deprecate the kpatch core module since
its functionality can be provided by the kernel livepatch API. But in
case anyone wants to continue to using it with newer kernels, consider
this a heads up that work will be required to build it for 5.2."

https://github.com/dynup/kpatch/issues/966

Since upstream is intending to deprecate the code and we don't use it,
I think it would make the most sense to remove the kpatch-dkms package,
and the test that failed, for eoan.

[Bug 1848852] Re: Counter-Strike Global Offensive freezes in gnome-shell

2019-10-28 Thread Ben Romer
I can confirm both the bug with CS:GO (and several other games that go
non-responsive for a short while after starting) and that the fix works.

I installed the packages from the ppa and have tested with CS:GO and a
couple of others I was experiencing the problem on (Dying Light and TF2
behave similarly) and the games start correctly now and do not block the
UI or crash gnome-shell, though they still display the Force Quit
dialog.

I can do any further testing needed but this LGTM.

[Bug 1578405] [NEW] Anjuta crashes in Glade Plugin due to Ubuntu menu proxy

2016-05-04 Thread Ben Romer
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce the bug:

1. Start Anjuta, create a new GTK application and move through the wizard until
the project opens.
2. Open the UI file by double-clicking it. This should cause Anjuta to crash.
3. Next, start Anjuta again using

$ UBUNTU_MENUPROXY= anjuta

This disables the unified menu. Anjuta will start.

4. Try opening the UI again. The glade plug-in will start successfully.
5. Shut down Anjuta, and try to start it again from the dash. It will crash
immediately.

WORKAROUND
The problem can be worked around by blacklisting anjuta in DConf. Add 'unity'
to the blacklist value under com.canonical.unity-gtk-module.

[Bug 1578405] Re: Anjuta crashes in Glade Plugin due to Ubuntu menu proxy

2016-05-04 Thread Ben Romer
** Description changed:

  Steps to reproduce the bug:

  1. Start Anjuta, create a new GTK application and move through the wizard
until the project opens.
  2. Open the UI file by double-clicking it. This should cause Anjuta to crash.
  3. Next, start Anjuta again using

  $ UBUNTU_MENUPROXY= anjuta

This disables the unified menu. Anjuta will start.

  4. Try opening the UI again. The glade plug-in will start successfully.
  5. Shut down Anjuta, and try to start it again from the dash. It will crash
immediately.

  WORKAROUND
- The problem can be worked around by blacklisting anjuta in DConf. Add 'unity'
to the blacklist value under com.canonical.unity-gtk-module.

[Bug 1570012] [NEW] kpatch-build build log file needs to be smaller

2016-04-13 Thread Ben Romer
Public bug reported:

The .kpatch/build.log file is enormous because it is carrying around the
entire build log for two kernel builds, when realistically it only needs
to keep the last build performed.

There's no reason to hang on to the initial kernel build after it is
complete, as a) it should normally complete without error, and b) if
there is a problem, the script will bail out there anyway. The script
needs the second build output for checking for unresolved symbols, but
since this build is only touching files modified by the patch, it should
be much smaller.

Running the build in non-debug mode cuts down on noise as well, though
some output is still necessary to avoid timeouts. Adding a function to
output dots during the kernel builds will take care of timeouts without
cluttering the screen.

This happened to me as well today after installing the RC. I can
successfully share a folder if I do not check "allow others to create
and delete files in this folder" - but if I do, nautilus crashes.

It is easily reproducible so if I can provide better crash data just let
me know what debug packages to install.

[Bug 1310316] Re: Text scaling factor changing unexpectedly

2014-05-06 Thread Ben Romer
I have the same issue on a Vaio with a 1920x1080 screen at 15". Setting
the text scale to 1.25 seems to sometimes boot up with the scaling being
again and all of the text appearing too large.

Also, the mouse cursors are incorrectly scaled in GTK2 applications,
varying between controls from a 1.25-scaled cursor to the 1-scale cursor
used by GTK3 apps. Most notably, pop-up menus will have the mouse scale
change when the pop-up is clicked and when the mouse is moved into the
pop-up.

[Bug 1315397] [NEW] Mouse cursor sizes are inconsistent within gtk2 apps

2014-05-02 Thread Ben Romer
Public bug reported:

After updating Ubuntu 14.04 yesterday I noticed that the mouse cursor
size was changing inside of GTK2 applications. I have a 1920x1080 15"
display running with the UI set to 1.25 scale. On GTK2 applications, the
pointer changes size within applications. For example, in Pidgin, the
pointer will appear enlarged within the text window for the
conversation, but appears the normal smaller size in the border around
the window, as well as in menus (both pop-up and drop-down), window
title bar, and the toolbar above the reponse text window.

Firefox is also affected inside of the browser window, bookmark toolbar,
and regular toolbars, and most oddly, the cursor changes size when
clicking in a sub-folder of bookmarks. When the sub-folder opens, the
cursor drops to the small size, but when the cursor enters the popped-
open menu, it enlarges again. Pop-up menus in the browser window also
change size from the larger cursor to the smaller one.

On a second system with a 1920x1080 20" display, with the UI set to 1.0
size, the cursor does not appear to change size, but if I change the
scale to 1.25, the same problem occurs.

The problem does not occur in GTK3 applications or in Unity.

[Bug 1315397] Re: Mouse cursor sizes are inconsistent within gtk2 apps

2014-05-02 Thread Ben Romer
After some additional experimentation on the 15" system it appears that
the problem is related to the org.gnome.applications.interface values
being calculated.

On the 15" system I get these values:

At 1.0, Cursor-size is 30, text-scaling-factor is 1.0, scaling-factor is 1.
At 1.25, Cursor-size is 38, text-scaling-factor is 1.25, scaling-factor is 1.

On the 20" system:
At 1.0, Cursor-size is 24, text-scaling-factor is 1.0, scaling-factor is 1.
At 1.25, Cursor-size is 30, text-scaling-factor is 1.25, scaling-factor is 1.

If I set the screen scaling to 1.25, and then manually set the cursor
size to 24 on the 15" system, when I reset the scaling-factor value to 0
or 1, the cursors on the 15" go back to matching sizes.

[Bug 837374] Re: ubuntu-sso-login crashed with AlreadyCalledError in _startRunCallbacks()

2011-10-07 Thread Ben Romer
I think this might have something to do with my having RabbitVCS
installed. A couple of days ago I got frustrated with how Rabbit seems
to hang up Nautilus while it's working, so I uninstalled it, and the
symptoms that happened before this crash would occur, and the crash
itself, have stopped happening.

I wonder if RabbitVCS had some startup routines that were bogging things
down at login time and resulting in a crash?

[Bug 753971] Re: Display garbled when connecting external displays

Updated today and this seems to have *partially* fixed my screen
corruption problem. Now I can enable and disable the external monitor
successfully, but if I disable the laptop panel with the external
monitor enabled, they both go black and recovering requires killing X.

I like to play games in full screen on my external monitor and there is
no other way to direct some of them to the second screen other than
disabling the laptop panel.

This is on my Vaio EB11FX, using the HDMI display, by the way.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 745112 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/745112

Public bug reported:

I have had this problem occur several times. Normally it will take
several hours to occur, but it seems to happen faster if I have a non-
blank screensaver enabled. The GUI stops responding for everything other
than mouse movement.

This also seems to show up in dmesg whenever I get the error:
[22000.144274] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed...
GPU hung
[22000.146131] [drm:i915_do_wait_request] *ERROR* i915_do_wait_request returns
-11 (awaiting 8827781 at 8827776, next 8827782)
[22000.146147] [drm:drm_helper_resume_force_mode] *ERROR* failed to set mode on
crtc 880191995800

It's not fatal, and I can switch VTs and kill X with alt-sysrq-K to
recover.

System is a Sony Vaio EB11FX.

[Bug 696850] [NEW] Cancel and Save buttons invisible when creating new Facebook account in Gwibber

2011-01-03 Thread Ben Romer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwibber

When re-creating my Facebook account on Gwibber, after authorizing, I
was unable to see the Cancel and Save buttons until I clicked on another
button on the window. After I did, the buttons were unresponsive and did
not save my account.

Steps to reproduce:
- open the Broadcast accounts window.
- delete your Facebook account.
- create a new Facebook account and authorize, selecting "keep me logged in."
Once authorized, no account will appear for it in the list, but the window will
change to show authorization, and will not have Cancel or Save buttons.
- make the Cancel and Save buttons appear by clicking on the Message Color
chooser and picking a color.
- click Save, nothing happens.
- click Cancel, the window will change back to the first account in the list.

2011-01-03 Thread Ben Romer
The about box says 2.32.2, and Synaptic calls it 2.32.2-0ubuntu2 - I
keep my system updated daily, so it should be the current version in the
repository.

Happy new year there too! :)

[Bug 696850] Re: Cancel and Save buttons invisible when creating new Facebook account in Gwibber

2011-01-07 Thread Ben Romer
Well, the account adds just fine if I click add - that's not a problem.
It's that if you're in the middle of adding the account, and try to
change the color, the Save/Cancel buttons come up but don't work. It'd
be better if the controls didn't come up at all until it was added, or
if the Save button did an add and save together, instead of doing
nothing.

It's a minor problem but just doesn't look very nice, is all, so I
thought I'd mention it. :)

[Bug 781663] [NEW] Overlay Scrollbar obstructs use of window controls in Glade3

2011-05-12 Thread Ben Romer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: overlay-scrollbar

When the Glade 3 window is maximized, the overlay scrollbar pops up over
top of the settings controls, making it impossible to use the controls
to change pages/settings/etc. See attached screenshot.

I am sure this is not going to be the only application that has this
problem.

[Bug 781663] Re: Overlay Scrollbar obstructs use of window controls in Glade3

2011-05-12 Thread Ben Romer
So I'm supposed to wait several seconds *every* time I need to use one
of the controls in the properties window? That's not a solution. If the
new scrollbars are going to be in my way and cost me time, I'll just
disable them. Thanks anyway.

[Bug 781663] Re: Overlay Scrollbar obstructs use of window controls in Glade3

2011-05-12 Thread Ben Romer
I think there needs to be a way to tell the scrollbar "get out of the
way and stay out" for cases like this. The overlay works fine when the
buttons are on the right side, so it would be good if I could do
something to tell the buttons to move out of the way, perhaps right-
clicking or alt-clicking on the them or the scrollbar, and then right-
click again to toggle back to the left when I do need to scroll.

BTW, it's kind of difficult to know exactly when it's okay to click
after the scroll buttons have started to fade out. I did notice that the
buttons go away if you hover, but if you click before they're
*completely* vanished they pop back up, and you have to re-wait. It's
also only good if you hold the mouse perfectly still, so if I overshoot
on one of the numeric controls and need to switch to the other
direction, I also have to re-wait for the fade.

I guess another alternative would be to have the right-click be "go away
NOW", but this could cause problems if right-click has meaning for the
control beneath the buttons.

Personally, I would have put the scroll buttons so they are always on
the bar but at the same width as the bar, and then had them expand
equally to both sides when entered/hovered, and shrink when exited. If
you've ever seen OpenLook or XView, the scrollers worked mostly like
that, except without the expanding/contracting effect.

[Bug 779711] Re: Anjuta's glade plugin causes strange behavior

2011-05-13 Thread Ben Romer
That's what I meant, the integrated menu - I thought it had a menu for
setting which version of GTK you wanted, and to associate editors with a
GUI, but I couldn't find those. I'm guessing that the progress bar is
the initialization one that you get when you load something with Glade,
but it's failing and only going partway through.

Glade works stand-alone so I've been using that instead of the
integration.

If I add the gnome3 ppa and pick Anjuta out, it'll grab just the
dependencies? I really don't want to mess up the rest of my box.

[Bug 748565] Re: It is not possible to activate valgrind plugin

2011-05-17 Thread Ben Romer
You can temporarily work around this bug, using the commands

$ cd /usr/lib
$ sudo ln -s libbfd-2.21.0-system.20110327.so libbfd-2.21-system.so

This appears to allow the plugin to load, I have not tested its
functionality yet.

[Bug 708809] Re: The Automaximize windows in Unity value is too low

2011-04-30 Thread Ben Romer
Not being able to disable this feature is extremely frustrating to me.
If I want something maximized *I* will maximize it, thankyouverymuch.
This should have an on/off switch *and* a threshold slider somewhere,
probably the Window Preferences panel.

This feature also completely hoses fullscreen mode on some third-party
games when they're set to fullscreen mode. Spiral Knights, for instance,
starts up in full screen mode and gets "re-maximized," ending up with
the game screen being in the wrong place with a window title bar it
doesn't need.

[Bug 779711] [NEW] Anjuta's glade plugin causes strange behavior

2011-05-08 Thread Ben Romer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: anjuta

I'm using Anjuta's Glade UI plugin and finding serious problems. When
the plugin loads, it appears that there is a progress bar on the bottom
half of the UI builder window, and Anjuta starts acting strangely if it
is maximized. With the UI plugin active, Anjuta will maximize itself so
that the top half of the toolbar is hidden under the upper panel (or
completely under the upper panel if running in Ubuntu Classic mode).
Clicking the upper panel when it is in this state causes it to resize
correctly, however double-clicking it will cause the window to move
mostly offscreen.

I believe the odd behavior is caused by the incorrectly-laid-out UI
builder window taking up more vertical space than is available on my
screen (1366x768), and so is a downstream effect of the bug.

Screenshot of the window in the odd state and with the incorrect UI
builder layout attached...

[Bug 779711] Re: Anjuta's glade plugin causes strange behavior

2011-05-09 Thread Ben Romer
It's probably the extra progress-bar inside of the GUI builder window -
if that window isn't open then Anjuta behaves normally. I also noticed
that the Glade menus didn't seem to be there with the editor up, so I'm
wondering if this is an initialization problem of some sort.

Do I need to have all of gnome 3 installed to use the anjuta 3.0 build?
I kinda don't want to break my system.
