[Bug 370321] [NEW] Sata exception loop
Public bug reported: Hello, When willing to access my drive I get an error message reporting an Ata exception, then Hard resetting link. This happens sometimes just 3 or for times consecutively, when data transferred to the disk is small and then back to the shell. But it will happen nearly always. Some other times, when data is big, it will loop forever. Therefore, I cannot install, even using the alternate disk. Having bootstrapped jaunty from Kubuntu 8.10 (THIS IS THE ONLY LINUX DISTRIBUTION I WAS ABLE TO INSTALL, SLOW BUT INSTALLED), I get rid of these messages by disabling write cache and seems to solve the problem: hdparm -W0 /dev/sda But it sometimes happened during the boot while remounting the root file system in rw mode, or if a check was forced. And in that case I can only unplug the current ! The trick boot parameter "nomsi" has no effect on my VAIO VGN-A517B. This happens also with Debian Lenny & Gentoo, so seems to be a kernel problem. My disk is fine, all tools reported no errors. I've seen some similar bugs but never with the exact same error message. The strange thing is that I get 900 and 30 MB/sec by hdparm -Tt /dev/sda BEFORE arriving in the disk detection. However it will freeze even before the disk detection if I try to format a partition. I join the data I could get from the installer before freeze, other data I could not get due to freezes are with bug 365884 (extracted thanks to the bootstrap. Thanks for your work! [Bug 370320] Re: Sata exception loop
Here if what I have in lspci result. The forst controller is my DVD drive and the second my hard disk. lspci -knn: 00:1f.1 IDE interface [0101]: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) IDE Controller [8086:266f] (rev 03) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: ata_piix lspci -knn: 00:1f.2 IDE interface [0101]: Intel Corporation 82801FBM (ICH6M) SATA Controller [8086:2653] (rev 03) lspci -knn: Kernel driver in use: ahci However, in Windows device manager I have for the CD (which I understand to be PATA): Intel (R)82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA storage Controllers- 266F. And for my hard-drive: Intel (R)82801FBM Ultra ATA storage Controllers- 2653, that is to say FB/ after 82801 has disappeared. However, Windows doesn't see it as Sata, right ? and the drivers used are atapi.sys, pciide.sys, pciidex.sys, and the driver is not from Microsoft but from Intel. So it may just be kind of hiding to windows the true nature of the device to make it work (I guess the driver was not included in Windows XP). Here is all I know about my problem, but I do confess all the forums and specifications I read about what is Pata - Sata was always confusing or contradicting... So is my disk a Pata or Sata ? it should be Sata since it is recognized via Ahci and named /dev/sda; and anyway, if everything is fine after bootstrapping Jaunty AND DISABLING THE WRITE CACHE (hdparm -W0 /dev/sda), is this a bug or is my computer just a special "old" (3 years) model ? Thanks in advance for any explanation because I've been searching for 2 months Bye ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid ** Converted to question: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+question/69775 -- Sata exception loop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/370320 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1266024] [NEW] Kernel 3.11 does not boot
Public bug reported: Hello, Upgrading to saucy, the kernel 3.11 does not boot. I kept using the kernel 3.8 and it works fine. I have a Fujitsu M2010. The problem is acpi related since it boots with acpi=off, but does not with any of noapic, nolapic, noirqpoll. But with acpi=off, resolution is wrong etc then. I also tried other distributions and all hang when the kernel is 3.11 Symptoms are equals to the ones reported in bug 1237336. [Bug 1266024] Re: Kernel 3.11 does not boot
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected saucy ** Description changed: Hello, Upgrading to saucy, the kernel 3.11 does not boot.
I did install the last kernel on the archive and headers as well. linux-image-3.13.0-031300rc7-generic_3.13.0-031300rc7.201401041835_i386.deb It does not boot either. Here is where is hangs when I boot removing quiet. irqpoll or not does not change anything. It talks about IRQ9 (used by ACPI as far as I know). "nobody cared: try booting with irqpoll". No more success. Fedora seems to have the same problem with bug 1030633. So it is definitely an upstream issue with the update on using the "common acpi", as the bug already reported (before I was told to create this one) turned out. [Bug 717622] [NEW] Anyone can list the files of /tmp
Public bug reported: Hello, Not a Unix/Linux professional, I noticed /tmp in 10.10 has the rights: drwxrwxrwt 12 root root 4096 2011-02-12 09:59 tmp/ The sticky bit being here to avoid a user to delete another user's file. However, by nature of these rights, anyone can list the files in this folder, and e.g. Firefox stores the temporary pdfs at /tmp; therefore anyone can read the bank account name when you open an account file with explicit name. Isn't that a privacy threat ? Why not make any user's tmp directory in /tmp/'$user' and forbid any user-loaded program write in /tmp, leaving it accessible only for the system ? Even more, to allow efficiency of using encrypting the home directory, it should just use ~/.tmp so that anything is anyway encrypted (even root couldn't decrypt without the user logged I believe), shouldn't it ? I understand there is a reason if it isn't done but I can't see... Thanks for your clarification. [Bug 721545] [NEW] Root partition on Usb - boot without Usb bios support.
Public bug reported: Good morning everyone. Having some troubleshoot with the internal HD of my laptop, I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a usb drive (in ext4) in /dev/sdb2 - (hd1,msdos2). The /boot is actually /dev/sda - (hd0,msdos1) formated in ext because the first 32 MB of my internal hard drive are still accessible and it avoids my to need a boot CD. Grub2 is on the mbr of the internal HD. Version 1.98 ubuntu 3.1 but I tried 1.99 has the same problem. When Grub2 boots. I have a message stating that grub2 cannot get C/H/S of partition (hd1,msdos2), which is normal since there is no BIOS support in my (old) laptop but it finally boots after some seconds waiting on the error message (or show me the menu if I press shift) without any problem since it loads the kernel and initrd from internal HD, then recognizes the USB with the kernel/module and uses it as root. After investigation, i found that in /boot/grub/grub.cfg, I have: # # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE # # It is automatically generated by grub-mkconfig using templates # from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub # ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/00_header ### if [ -s $prefix/grubenv ]; then set have_grubenv=true load_env fi set default="0" if [ "${prev_saved_entry}" ]; then set saved_entry="${prev_saved_entry}" save_env saved_entry set prev_saved_entry= save_env prev_saved_entry set boot_once=true fi function savedefault { if [ -z "${boot_once}" ]; then saved_entry="${chosen}" save_env saved_entry fi } function recordfail { set recordfail=1 if [ -n "${have_grubenv}" ]; then if [ -z "${boot_once}" ]; then save_env recordfail; fi; fi } function load_video { insmod vbe insmod vga } insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='(hd1,msdos2)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set c9083da5-8561-4189-9e7e-d0ef9eed3e55 if loadfont /usr/share/grub/unicode.pf2 ; then set gfxmode=640x480 load_video insmod gfxterm fi terminal_output gfxterm insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,msdos1)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 8812973d-eff0-4248-8007-852e543290c6 set locale_dir=($root)/grub/locale set lang=fr insmod gettext if [ "${recordfail}" = 1 ]; then set timeout=-1 else set timeout=10 fi ### END /etc/grub.d/00_header ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ### set menu_color_normal=white/black set menu_color_highlight=black/light-gray ### END /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/10_linux ### ETC ETC. --- As you can see, after the load_video function, there is: insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='(hd1,msdos2)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set c9083da5-8561-4189-9e7e-d0ef9eed3e55 if loadfont /usr/share/grub/unicode.pf2 ; then set gfxmode=640x480 load_video insmod gfxterm fi which of course cannot work since the Usb HD is not accessible yet. These lines come from the execution of 00_header: if [ "x$gfxterm" = x1 ]; then # Make the font accessible prepare_grub_to_access_device `${grub_probe} --target=device "${GRUB_FONT_PATH}"` cat << EOF if loadfont `make_system_path_relative_to_its_root "${GRUB_FONT_PATH}"` ; then set gfxmode=${GRUB_GFXMODE} load_video insmod gfxterm fi -- which uses /usr/lib/grub/grub-mkconfig_lib function's: is_path_readable_by_grub () { path=$1 # abort if path doesn't exist if test -e $path ; then : ;else return 1 fi # abort if file is in a filesystem we can't read if ${grub_probe} -t fs $path > /dev/null 2>&1 ; then : ; else return 1 fi return 0 } and also prepare_grub_to_access_device() which creates the incriminated text put in grub.cfg. It seems this function replies positively whereas the fs is not accessible at boot time because the filesystem is of a recognized type and the path exists to the system. Strange thing, the first time I installed 10.10 it was working but after a while & reinstalling not anymore. May be the gfx sceen was disabled for some reason so it did not execute this part of the code. I don't see any option and anyway that would just be a workaround. I tried using --root-directory=/boot manually for grub-install. No effect. 1. Everything needed for grub2 should just be copied in /boot to ensure it is accessible and no reference to anything else should be made (outside of a personal script for some reasons). 2. So the system does not detect that some disk is not available at boot time before the kernel is loaded. If impossible to detect automatically what is available to the Bios, the configuration screen of grub2 should ask (when asking for where to install grub2) for it. 3. No Usb disk driver for grub2 ? I saw some tries on the net but I should just be included in grub2 if it works. I can read some script but not very familiar with, so I could not fix it myself but if someone is involved, I could help but make it
[Bug 721560] [NEW] grub-mkrescue: paths/disks are not updated in grub.cfg
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: grub2 Hello, Ubuntu (grub2 1.99) is installed on a Usb drive. I needed to create a boot cd for my system since the boot disk is failing more and more and I have NO USB BIOS support. 1. So after installation, I ran with root rights: grub-mkrescue --output=cd.iso /boot In that case, I get the image with inside: /boot/grub/i386-pc/ {grub.cfg, eltorito.img & the modules} /{kernel, initrd and the content of my boot folder in the system, INCLUDING THE GRUB FOLDER, which become in the image /grub /boot/grub/i386-pc/ grub.cfg text is: insmod part_acorn insmod part_amiga insmod part_apple insmod part_bsd insmod part_gpt insmod part_msdos insmod part_sun insmod part_sunpc source /boot/grub/grub.cfg However, as told above, the original grub.cfg image from my system is on the CD in /grub/grub.cfg. So it IS NOT SOURCED BY GRUB AND I GET DIRECTLY TO THE CLI WHILE BOOTING. 2. I tried: sudo grub-mkrescue --output=cd.iso /boot/grub In that case, I get the image with inside: /boot/grub/i386-pc/ {grub.cfg, eltorito.img & the modules} /{the content of my system's boot/grub folder, i.e. modules and grub.cfg at the root of my CD.}. So it is not sourced by the command "source /boot/grub/grub.cfg" in the default file read by the eltorito.img core. 3. To get the right path (/boot/grub/grub.cfg) for my system's file (/boot/grub/grub.cfg), I tried sudo grub-mkrescue --output=cd.iso / i get: - aure@aure-VGN-A517B:/$ sudo grub-mkrescue --output=/root/cd.iso / Enabling BIOS support ... xorriso 0.5.6 : RockRidge filesystem manipulator, libburnia project. xorriso : FAILURE : Cannot determine attributes of source file '' xorriso : sys : No such file or directory -- I do not understand these messages... 4. SOLUTION: I copied the /boot folder in a temporary other folder, let's say /root/ttt I use this folder in the command: sudo grub-mkrescue --output=cd.iso /root/ttt that way I get on the cd my original system's grub.cfg in /boot/grub/grub.cfg. -> Therefore, the grub-mkrescue command should adapt the source command to access the right file parsing the path passed as an argument. -> The command should also include any required file (unicode.pf2, gfx etc.) inside the CD and change the references of the grub.cfg file to point to the CD's files. But as I state in the bug (721545), any file should be copied in /boot to eliminate all the problems of accessible files at once and solve all. Thank you, I do not know C a lot so cannot play with that. PS: May be somehow linked to the bug I just reported (721545) which highlights that the paths management is sometimes wrong, but this can be solved separately since it copies the system grub.cfg. ** Affects: grub2 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/721560 Title: grub-mkrescue: paths/disks are not updated in grub.cfg -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
