Looks like the gnome-software bug mentioned above was a false alarm. But the Gtk module has indeed not imported those translations that were present upstream at the time of the GNOME release deadline. Right - the English string wasn't changed after all. Why do you, Zygmunt Krynicki (zyga), think the translation is wrong? The string is "Advise will talk to apt via an apt hook". Advise is used as a noun here, which is of course wrong unless referring to a command. So why would it be wrong to translate this to the actual command name given that we don't have a translation for that command as such? I think the warning is probably wrong. Why does it need to check upper/lower case? What does this framework even do about languages that don't have upper/lower case? Snappy does not provide a string which is simply "Advise". That would be necessary in order to establish a translation of the name. I have changed the translation now ("Kommunikér med apt via en apt-
hook"), but please keep in mind that I/we have definitely not been one-
sidedly ignoring anything. AFAIK it was the English string which was
supposed to change, and the warning persists only because this did not
happen.
Please explain what problem is caused by the string being in lowercase.
As a general i18n rule, the program should not process the translations.
I still don't understand why there would be anything wrong with the
previous translation. It is also liable to change back if someone
reviews and updates the module, since Launchpad doesn't allow writing
comments to other translators explaining why an unusual rewrite was
chosen.

Just FYI, translators don't see this kind of warning while translating because we don't really the resources (or an appropriate environment) to compile and test the programs. Thanks for reporting this, and to all of you for the discussion. I/we discussed this when translating it. The problem is that 'advise(-snap)' is used like a verb, but is also the name of a command. This means when we translate it, we need to choose either a proper translation (i.e., a verb), or we need to keep the name of the command, which is of course case sensitive. However we (translators) are normally content in knowing that the translation contains the same information as the original string. So we may choose either. It is actually somewhat surprising that the code performs this check. Does anybody know why? So what will happen exactly on the dev side? There are many cases in snappy where command names are used rather interchangeably as command names (nouns) or verbs, prompting translators to decide which of the two to pick. Should I/we update the string to get rid of the warning? Either way it should have imported the translations from 2017. Indeed util- linux has been translated very well in Danish for quite a few years: https://translationproject.org/domain/util-linux.html More precisely, 4000 translations are available and they have not been imported for (apparently) 6 years, leaving Danish at the level of 600 strings. I suspect this is not really an issue with the util-linux source package, but rather with the whole Ubuntu/Launchpad translations workflow. I can see that several packages have similar problems, and that is probably just the tip of the iceberg. Unfortunately I have no clue how to approach that - at least I cannot file a bug report against The Whole Thing. Unfortunately, adding translator comments is not quite sufficient. If
it were only that simple, I would submit a patch. And it has been two
years now, counting this bug report.
The problem is that unity-control-center somehow gets several strings
(usually titles) from /other/ programs such as deja-dup, language-
selector, and undoubtedly many more. It is very time consuming for
translators to figure out where these problematic strings come from, and
it is not even a solution to fix it in the other program: If we add a
hyphen in "Sikkerhedskopier" ("Backups"), so it becomes "Sikkerheds-
kopier", then it will be correct in the control center but wrong
/everywhere/ else in Deja-dup, and that string is used in very many
places where the hyphen would introduce an error.
Since unity-control-center does not handle long strings well, it is
unity-control-center's fault. It must define its /own/ strings and have
proper translator comments so the translators know where to place
hyphens. And probably it should allow longer strings, too, and do
linebreaks automatically. Even in the middle of the words if it needs
to, because ugly is better than absent. Now it simply refrains from
rendering the whole string.
This has been broken in many languages for years, and it's a really
basic part of the UI which every user sees, so this is a serious
internationalization problem. Please, I implore, give it the priority
it deserves.

Which strings are affected? Since this is apparently a GTK issue, is it thousands (and thus impossible to fix for translators)? Oversættelsen af monodevelop er meget ufuldstændig (omkr. 20%), og hele modulet skal oversættes/gennemlæses før det giver mening at bekymre sig om enkeltfejl. Jeg markerer derfor som "invalid", da dette er lidt uden for perspektiverne for denne fejlrapport (selvom fejlen i sig selv er reel nok), og da den i virkeligheden ikke er "in progress". I think I have the same problem but under slightly different circumstances. It happens whether on battery or not. Was able to boot after adding 'acpi=off nomodeset xforcevesa' to the grub boot options. The acpi=off was definitely necessary. 'sudo setupcon' fixes it (the letters ø and Ø are displayed correctly after invocation of the command). This is in maverick, not natty. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: console-setup Of the three non-latin letters in the Danish alphabet (æøå), ø is not displayed correctly in the non-X-console that can be accessed using e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F1. The lowercase ø (unicode 00f8) is only slightly wrong, appearing to be raised a few pixels over the baseline of the other characters. But it is sufficiently misaligned that this should be considered an error. The uppercase Ø (unicode 00d8) is a completely wrong character. It slightly resembles an uppercase Greek Phi, but isn't one. Ubuntu presumably ships a particular version of GNOME. I understand that this version is no longer based on the major (September) release, but rather a previous minor release, in this case from July. Is that always the case now and is that documented somewhere?
