[Bug 1221138] Re: package linux-image-3.5.0-39-generic 3.5.0-39.60~precise1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 17
Well, there is indeed a bug in the file /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux- image-3.5.0-39-generic.postinst I substituted all (four) occurrences of pwd in /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux- image-3.2.0-34-generic.postinst with getcwd() and now everything seems to work ... The solution is explained at large @ http://askubuntu.com/questions/233798/linux-image-generic-seems-to-be- broken pwd doesn't work from within perl apparently, it just returns an empty string. In any case, I'm fairly certain that it's a bug that the postinst script calls pwd instead of using Perl's own Cwd like it ought to. pwd is a bash shell command line / bourne shell. Would you please update the linux-image-3.5.0-39-generic.postinst script accordingly ? and the bug status if I couldn't update it. [Bug 1221138] Re: package linux-image-3.5.0-39-generic 3.5.0-39.60~precise1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 17
A couple of days before I installed the kernel 3.5.0-40 through the regular Ubuntu Update process and all went fine. I did check the /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-3.5.0-40-generic.postrm file and it still sported the 4 occurences of pwd in this instruction : chomp($cwd = `pwd`); When first installing the Quantal kernel backport there was no problem and subsequent updates went fine. However the automatic update process did install a 3.5.0 kernel recent version (far above the 40 currently supported). I did not pay attention to the GRUB boot screen which was still showing that the 3.5.0-39 was used by my Ubuntu 12.04 system and I removed as usual the older(s) kernels from my /boot partition. Following this I had to boot through th regular 3.2 kernel and I did re-install the kernel 3.5.0-39 through the following precedure coming from an official Ubuntu website : 1) Add the X-team ppa (https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/q-lts-backport) sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/q-lts-backport 2) Update apt and install the new kernel sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install linux-image-generic-lts-quantal linux-headers-generic-lts-quantal 3) Restart your computer to boot into the new kernel However I was faced with the reported bug : package linux-image-3.5.0-39-generic 3.5.0-39.60~precise1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 17 Only after replacing all occurences of pwd by getcwd() within /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-3.2.0-34-generic.postinst , did I succeed to re-install the Quantal backport of 3.5.0-39 in Precise 12.04 For information before re-installing I did the following to remove the Quantal kernel : 1) Install ppa-purge sudo apt-get install ppa-purge 2) Remove the ppa sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/q-lts-backport 3) PPA Purge will find the packages installed and offered to downgrade them. Say yes and ppa-purge will remove the upgraded versions and reinstall the versions from the archive. 4) Remove the meta packages sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-generic-lts-quantal linux-headers-generic-lts-quantal 5) Remove the kernel itself. While running the new kernel, enter the following command uname -r This returns a number, like '3.5.0-8-generic'. Use the number (3.5.0-8) to replace the word KERNEL sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-KERNEL-generic linux-headers-KERNEL linux-headers-KERNEL-generic sudo apt-get autoremove Eg, for '3.5.0-8' sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-3.5.0-8-generic linux-headers-3.5.0-8 linux-headers-3.5.0-8 In short the used : chomp($cwd = `pwd`); is working as it did before, however I am not sure weather the problem would re-appear following a full un-install / re-install. the solution was to use : chomp($cwd=`getcwd()`); -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1221138 Title: package linux-image-3.5.0-39-generic 3.5.0-39.60~precise1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 17 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1221138/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1300506] [NEW] emacs24 while byte compiling will keep asking for a shared lib not existing in my system
Public bug reported: I was running emacs24 on Precise 12.04 after an install from this ppa @ https://launchpad.net/~cassou/+archive/emacs Install worked fine. Until recently when installing new programs (SuperCollider) which were byte compiling for emacs24. For some mysterious reason at that time emacs24 was trying to open a shared library libgvc.so.6 which was never present in my system for a good reason : It will be on the soon to be released Trusty 14.04. [Bug 1300506] Re: emacs24 while byte compiling will keep asking for a shared lib not existing in my system
I have looked to the shared libraries cache and there is no trace (as expected) of the library reported as missing libgvc.so.6 (this is a symlink to libgvc.so.6.0.0 the actual lib). $ ldconfig -p | grep libgvc libgvc.so.5 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/libgvc.so.5 libgvc.so (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib/libgvc.so $ $ cd / $ $ locate libgvc.so.5 /usr/lib/libgvc.so.5 /usr/lib/libgvc.so.5.0.0 $ locate libgvc.so.6 $ To cir-convent this bug I resorted to make a symlink libgvc6.0 $ sudo ln -sv libgvc.so.5.0.0 /usr/lib/libgvc.so.6 $ ls -l /usr/lib/libgvc* lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Jan 14 14:42 /usr/lib/libgvc.so -> libgvc.so.5.0.0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Jan 14 14:42 /usr/lib/libgvc.so.5 -> libgvc.so.5.0.0 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 506184 Jan 14 14:42 /usr/lib/libgvc.so.5.0.0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 Apr 1 16:02 /usr/lib/libgvc.so.6 -> libgvc.so.5 $ However this is not a regular procedure. Just an update on my previous post. I discovered that even when building new jpeg2000 images (format .j2k) from any version installed (1.3, 1.5 or 2.0.0), Nautilus or Nemo will crash when opening the containing folder of some of these images (not all ...). The solution is simple : You have first to open these images with GIMP. Ounce GIMP has open these images their thumbnail is displayed by Nautilus / Nemo and does not crash ... [Bug 1407372] [NEW] Blurry Font Bug from GTK+ 3.10.8 in Trusty 14.04
Public bug reported: Following a fresh install of Ubuntu Trusty 14.04 I had the surprise to see blurry fonts showing up in gEdit (stock install), when the document viewed is longer than a displayed vertical or horizontal page. I later found it was reported as a bug in Launchpad as "blurry font as document is longer than one page and scroll bars appear", see: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+3.0/+bug/1309785 This GTK+ 3.10.8 bug was reported as corrected in September 2014 in in GTK+ 3.13.7 . However someone reported a work-around which consisted of adding an "env" parameter to the Exec command line in the gedit.desktop file. # Exec=gedit %U Exec=env GTK_DEBUG=no-pixel-cache gedit %U It looks like the displayed information on a selected package in Synaptic shows the same behavior i.e. Selecting package "0ad" will show a perfect font rendering in the package info field. However selecting package "0ad-data" which description is slightly longer and will not fit in the panel window, will display then a blurred font. I tried the same "env GTK_DEBUG=no-pixel-cache" to synaptic cmd. line however this is not working. Considering that Trusty 14.04 is a LTS release, does anyone knows which env parameter would fix this bug ? [Bug 1135394] Re: qtconfig isn't getting built
It looks like on Aug 9, 2013 1:17 PM the status of this bug has been updated to "Abandoned". Another link is provided as a problem bug to be solved first but the link is a dead one now : HTTP Error 404 Not found. This package is build from version 1.3 of the source code from the Google Code project http://code.google.com/p/openjpeg/ Since then they have released version 1.4, 1.5, 1.5.1 and 2.0.0. My own experience for having installed version 1.3, 1.5 and 2.0.0 is that the compressed images j2k are not compatible between versions. You end up with a crash in the jasper package. See their Canadian website @ http://www.ece.uvic.ca/~frodo/jasper/ However for some reason when another version is installed jasper crashed and following this crash Nautilus or Nemo crash as well. Aside from the jasper / nautilus - nemo trouble between different OpenPEG versions, GIMP or GPicView had no problem opening j2k images from other versions of OpenJPEG. When recompressing the source images to j2k with the new version I idn't get any crash. However the thumbnail will not show up on some images ... all thumbnails only appear with the official v1.3 version still part of the latest distibutions from Ubuntu or Debian. I am now encountering the same bug in Precise 12.04 after removing a "not empty" /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/ directory while un-installing emacs24 ... The previous post is usefull however the 3 files debian-ispell.el, flyspell.el and ipsell.el were installed. The only file missing was debian-startup.el . [Bug 673350] Re: Can't install emacs23
Clarification : The 3 files debian-ispell.el, flyspell.el and ipsell.el from /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/dictionaries-common will be re-installed with this command $ sudo apt-get install --reinstall dictionaries-common The file /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/debian-startup.el will be restored by installing package emacsen-common $ sudo apt-get install emacsen-common If any other package related .el file was deleted / removed then you will have to re-create the directory name as the error gives its name. This was the case for cmake on my machine. $ sudo mkdir /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/[package-name] Then re-install the [pacage-name] containing the .el file when an error is poppping up for that particular package. In my case re-installing from the following ppa https://launchpad.net/~cassou/+archive/emacs gave me back a fully working emacs24 installation. [Bug 959836] Re: Needs to distribute sources instead of precompiled libraries
Nice. Canonical / Ubuntu has enough sway to impose the removal of libraries which would break their MIR. In theory the source files are copied in /usr/src/xorg-gtest and part of the dev package. I just downloaded the latest Oracle update for Java 6 : jdk-6u43-linux-x64.bin from their website http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk6downloads-1902814.html Then just make it executable and extract it in a local folder like Downloads $ chmod +x jdk-6u43-linux-x64.bin $ ./jdk-6u43-linux-x64.bin Then copy the 2 files to the working Java 7 installation $ sudo cp ~/Downloads/jdk1.6.0_41/jre/lib/fontconfig.Ubuntu.* /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/jre/lib/ That fixed the flaw instantly. [Bug 1159288] Re: GParted hang while Scanning all devices for 10 to 15 mn
Thank you for your feedback. I was able to reproduce the bug today. It is not linked to any floppy device at all since I have used the same hardware for one year and that was working properly. In fact this bug is appearing right during and after the installation of VMware Workstation 9.0.2 for Linux x64. I can see that : sudo blkid takes now in the 10 to 15 mn to complete vs. less than a second. This has the same effect on gparted. If I happen to close gparted while "Scanning for all devices" then a subsequent launch will have it to crash right after getting the system password. I need to restart Ubuntu to attempt a relaunch of gparted. Unfortunately removing VMware Workstation does not solve the issue. They obviously tinker something in the Ubuntu file system to make this happen to 'blkid' and 'gparted'. This may be as well because of a weakness in the code of linux Ubuntu which is affected by something from the VMware installation process. I am trying to find a way to report this bug to VMware ... Since I happen to have a working image of Ubuntu 12.04 made a month ago with CloneZilla I was able to pinpoint the problem. However it is quite unerving that a "commercial" program could derails basic functions of the OS and impact through it other applications. [Bug 1159288] Re: GParted hang while Scanning all devices for 10 to 15 mn
I can confirm today that it's not directly linked to VMware Workstation ... However I had an image restored from before this bug appeared and I was just free of this bug until a few days ago when I installed QEMU and today KVM. I suspect that QEMU did bring back the issue ... I know that Oracle VirtualBox uses parts of QEMU, I don't know yet for VMware. I am in contact with VMware about this issue and as of last week they were ot able to reproduce this bug. I have an old graphic card ATI Radeon 3870 and an ASUS Motherboard P5Q3 Deluxe WiFi. I have a new nVidia card GTI 660 Ti which I will install my be next week. Can other people affected by this bug post their hardware configuration ? Can you please elaborate on the "blacklist fd0" ? [Bug 1159288] Re: GParted hang while Scanning all devices for 10 to 15 mn
OK. No need to strace. I did the same trick as john Buczek. My system is working now. I did have a floppy appearing in fact on the left column of Nautilus. The following Command Lines made it disappear instantly. I went to unix.stackexchange.com to get a solution : "Linux, disable /dev/fd0 (floppy)" http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/53513/linux-disable-dev-fd0-floppy Namely : $ echo "blacklist floppy" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-floppy.conf $ sudo rmmod floppy $ sudo update-initramfs -u The result is immediate, no need to reboot and lasting. May be I will have to do it again at the next kernel update ? The trouble came from the fact that although I have no floppy disk on my hardware system, the ASUS BIOS is declaring it. Hence the trouble with Linux. At least on Ubuntu the thing to do is to blacklist the module associated with /dev/fd0 I have re-install VMware in addition to QEMU-KVM and everything is working fine, gparted and the CL sudo blkid as well. This is closing this bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1159288 Title: GParted hang while Scanning all devices for 10 to 15 mn To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gparted/+bug/1159288/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

However I did try to compile libcairo ad i is still not working at all with libpng1.62 (I mean libpng >= 1.15). libpng.org on their website still have the remainder for making the code compatible. Portability Note -- The libpng 1.5.x and 1.6.x series continue the evolution of the libpng API, finally hiding the contents of the venerable and hoary png_struct and png_info data structures inside private (i.e., non-installed) header files. Instead of direct struct-access, applications should be using the various png_get_xxx() and png_set_xxx() accessor functions, which have existed for almost as long as libpng itself. If your application is fully dependent on libcairo that may explain the behaviour. Anyway I have left he libpng1.2 libraries at their original place. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1191195 Title: Cannot launch banshee: Unhandled Exception: System.DllNotFoundException: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/banshee/+bug/1191195/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1191195] Re: Cannot launch banshee: Unhandled Exception: System.DllNotFoundException: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
Trouble is that these libraries have different names and are all present. It should be to the applications to decide whatever library they want to use and the system shoud not interfere in any way. Albeit it looks like there is some weird interferences for some applications. The new libpng libraries don't lack any functional things as I would say the 1.2 are old freezed version receiving only security updates. The matter is that png_struct and png_info data are no more in header files (for devel) and that the source code of applications has to be adapted to this reality using png_get_xxx() and png_set_xxx() accessor functions. Some applications developpers refused to do and locked down the libnpg shared library to the 1.12 version. Here is the result of $ sudo ldconfig -v > ldconfig-v.log attached. Both libpng libraries are visible in the log. Here is a summary of what I have done about libpng in my system. -- I have set the libpng16 in /usr/lib/ (this is the default from compiling the tarball) and made sym links to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu Compiled package libpng16-0_1.6.2-0ubuntu0_amd64.deb -- Installed Files --- /usr/bin/libpng-config ---> symbolic link to libpng16-config /usr/bin/libpng16-config +/usr/include/libpng---> symbolic link to libpng16 /usr/include/libpng16 /usr/include/libpng16/png.h /usr/include/libpng16/pngconf.h /usr/include/libpng16/pnglibconf.h /usr/include/png.h ---> symbolic link to libpng16/png.h /usr/include/pngconf.h ---> symbolic link to libpng16/pngconf.h /usr/include/pnglibconf.h ---> symbolic link to libpng16/pnglibconf.h /usr/lib/libpng.a ---> symbolic link to libpng16.a /usr/lib/libpng.la /usr/lib/libpng.so ---> symbolic link to libpng16.so /usr/lib/libpng16.a /usr/lib/libpng16.la /usr/lib/libpng16.so---> symbolic link to libpng16.so.16.2.0 /usr/lib/libpng16.so.16 ---> symbolic link to libpng16.so.16.2.0 /usr/lib/libpng16.so.16.2.0 /usr/lib/pkgconfig /usr/lib/pkgconfig/libpng.pc---> symbolic link to libpng16.pc /usr/lib/pkgconfig/libpng16.pc /usr/share/man/man3 /usr/share/man/man3/libpng.3.gz /usr/share/man/man3/libpngpf.3.gz /usr/share/man/man5 /usr/share/man/man5/png.5.gz I did add a symbolic link named libpng12.so.0 ---> libpng.so $ cd /usr/lib/ $ sudo ln -s libpng.so libpng12.so.0 Package libpng12-0 (Official Ubuntu) libpng12-0 1.2.46-3ubuntu4 PNG library - runtime Installed Files --- /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng12.so.0 ---> symbolic link to libpng12.so.0.46.0 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng12.so.0.46.0 /usr/share/doc-base/libpng12 /usr/share/doc/libpng12-0 /usr/share/doc/libpng12-0/ANNOUNCE /usr/share/doc/libpng12-0/KNOWNBUG /usr/share/doc/libpng12-0/README.Debian /usr/share/doc/libpng12-0/README.gz /usr/share/doc/libpng12-0/TODO /usr/share/doc/libpng12-0/changelog.Debian.gz /usr/share/doc/libpng12-0/copyright /usr/share/doc/libpng12-0/libpng-1.2.46.txt.gz Pacakge libpng12-dev (Official Ubuntu) -- libpng12-dev1.2.46-3ubuntu4 PNG library - development Installed Files --- /usr/bin/libpng-config ---> symbolic link to libpng12-config /usr/bin/libpng12-config /usr/include/libpng ---> symbolic link to libpng12 /usr/include/libpng12 /usr/include/libpng12/png.h /usr/include/libpng12/pngconf.h /usr/include/png.h ---> symbolic link to libpng12/png.h /usr/include/pngconf.h ---> symbolic link to libpng12/pngconf.h /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng.a ---> symbolic link to libpng12.a /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng.so ---> symbolic link to libpng12.so /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng12.a /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng12.so ---> symbolic link to /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng12.so.0 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pkgconfig /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pkgconfig/libpng.pc ---> symbolic link to libpng12.pc /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pkgconfig/libpng12.pc /usr/share/doc/libpng12-dev /usr/share/doc/libpng12-dev/changelog.Debian.gz ---> symbolic link to ../libpng12-0/changelog.Debian.gz /usr/share/doc/libpng12-dev/copyright /usr/share/doc/libpng12-dev/examples /usr/share/doc/libpng12-dev/examples/example.c.gz /usr/share/doc/libpng12-dev/examples/pngtest.c.gz /usr/share/doc/libpng12-dev/examples/pngtest.png /usr/share/man/man1 /usr/share/man/man1/libpng-config.1.gz ---> symbolic link to libpng12-config.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/libpng12-config.1.gz /usr/share/man/man3 /usr/share/man/man3/libpng.3.gz /usr/share/ma
[Bug 1191195] Re: Cannot launch banshee: Unhandled Exception: System.DllNotFoundException: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
Well after posting the explanation of what I have done about libpng12 and libpng16 and reading from Chow Loong Jin (hyperair) that his analysys of MONO points him to : Mono: DllImport error loading library: '/usr/lib/libpng12.so.0: version `PNG12_0' not found I tried to remove the symbolic link I did add manually : $ sudo rm /usr/lib/libpng12.so.0 The program looks at the first instance of the library found (may be). So now it has to go at the right place to find it in /lib/x86_64-linux- gnu And it looks like now Banshee 2.4.1 is working fine :-). Then I just performed an Ubuntu Update (Gnome) since I am a subscriber of the ppa maintained by Chow Loong Jin (hyperair) and the last version 2.6.1 of Banshee is now working in my system. Thank you so much Mr. Chow Loong Jin (hyperair) for your time and insight. I will later try to compile and build a package on my system using the libpng16 libraries. Can you you please update the status of this bug to Fixed instead of Invalid ? Thanks. One day I hope Ubuntu will try to move on from libpng12 which is on old version receiving only security updates. One day thre will be no support at all for it.
[Bug 1191195] Re: Cannot launch banshee: Unhandled Exception: System.DllNotFoundException: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
Eveything is working fine in my system and I don't consider it "broken". My point of view is that Ubuntu is sticking with its "system build" to antique version of libraries. I obviously don't know the full reason why? This should in part comes from some developper / packager whom chose to ignore the natural evolution of software which is part of the so called "Ubuntu system build". Eventually there will be no more security fixes for libpng12 from its deleloppers @ http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/libpng.html. Linux is a free OS is not owned by Utuntu or other distribution. When I have time I will look-up your information in order to build my own packages when needed.
