[Bug 307953] [NEW] Wireless card rt61 does not work with the newest driver 2.1.8

2008-12-14 Thread AndriyK
Public bug reported:

I use Ubuntu 8.04 on a desktop with the RaLink rt2561/rt61 pci wireless card.
Wireless worked out-of-the-box, but the computer used to freeze randomly. I
learned from the thread at the ubuntu forum
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=832383 that updating wireless driver
might help.
So I installed the package linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-22-generic.
As far as I understand, it downloads and installs the newest versions of all
drivers automatically.

The driver was automatically updated to the version 2.1.8.
It appeared, however, that now the wireless does not work at all.
It does see the available wireless networks but fails to connect.

As far as I understand, the problem is with the driver version 2.1.8 rather
than with the package linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-22-generic.
I don't no which package the driver belong to. Therefore I left the
corresponding field empty.

 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 287830] Re: Wireless does not work on Dell Inspiron 1525

2009-03-06 Thread AndriyK
The issue is already resolved. Sorry, I did not report it before.
Somehow I could not find my own message.

The solution is very simple. After the instalklation of Ubuntu, the
computer has to be connected to Internet via wired network so that it
can download wireless drivers. (Foe some reasons, they are not included
into the installation CD).

It would be nice if the next distributive will inform the user that
wired connection is needed before the wireless starts to work.
