[Bug 117555] Re: Suspend-to-disk (hibernate) and suspend-to-ram do not work anymore

2008-10-17 Thread Anastasios Hatzis
I am the original poster.

Today I could verify successfully that suspend-to-disk (hibernate) and
suspend-to-ram, both works fine again on my notebook!

Please note, I haven't been able to test the 8.10 ("Intrepid Ibex") pre-
releases yet, since this notebook is my production computer and I have
no clue about any side-effects that may occur with a parallel 8.10
installation.

Since I submitted the bug, I upgraded from one Kubuntu version to the
next, including all the Linux updates whenever offered by apt-get/Adept.
The most recent version-upgrade was to Kubuntu 8.04 LTS ("Hardy Heron").

I have checked occasionally, if hibernate + suspend works again, but
until today with negative results (same behavior as described in my
original post).

I am not 100% sure, since which udpate hibernate + suspend works
properly. However, yesterday I got the upgrade to 2.6.24-21-generic:

$ uname -a
Linux pcc-adm-7 2.6.24-21-generic #1 SMP Mon Aug 25 17:32:09 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux

After the next reboot I missed the hibernate + suspend options that
usually are in the Leave (Log-off?) dialog of KDE.

I rebooted again, and here both options are back in the Log-off dialog.
First tested hibernate: OK, then suspend: OK.

Can someone else confirm this?

[Bug 117555] Suspend-to-disk (hibernate) and suspend-to-ram do not work anymore

2007-05-29 Thread Anastasios Hatzis
Public bug reported:

I experience problems with suspend-to-disk (hibernate) and suspend-to-
ram. I use an IBM Thinkpad T41p. Originally I had installed Kubuntu 6.10
where both features worked fine. After upgrading to Kubuntu 7.04 (Feisty
Fawn) I am not able to suspend or hibernate, I can only shutdown
regular.

$ uname -a
Linux hugomobil 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Wed May 23 01:46:23 UTC 2007 i686
GNU/Linux
I have installed all upgrades as of today, May 29th.

Example with suspend-to-disk, whatever I use (KDE icons or
/etc/acpi/hibernate.sh):
The screens is getting screwed up (like a TV during a bg storm), I can only
see black with some colored whirled stripes. Mouse and keyboard are not working
anymore. The LED lights of SHIFT-LOCK (CAPS-LOCK?) and this "half-moon" are
blinking. There is no activity on the hard-disk. This doesn't change and the
system seems to be frozen, so I have to do a hard switch off of my laptop.

After restarting the laptop KDE seems to load the last session where I
made a regular shutdown (which still works fine), but not of the session
I had as I tried to suspend.

With suspend-to-ram is the same problem.

Both suspend-features worked great in Kubuntu 6.10 (including loading
the image from disk/ram).

[Bug 15451] Re: Ubuntu / SMB network error using documnets

2007-04-26 Thread Anastasios Hatzis
Adding to my comment on 2007-04-19:

The file-server I mentioned is a Windows 2003 server. I use Kubuntu 6.10
with smb-client to access the particular directory on this server. The
user-account on the server is with-out password.

This Windows server should be replaced but as you reported the problem
is also with Samba server, so it wouldn't solve my problem.

@steve: I'm looking forward to your SuSE 10 report.

I wonder if a lack of free hard disk space is a potential reason for the
observed phenomena (freezing with no error message)? Maybe the upgrade from
6.10 to 7.04 has consumed some disk space reserves I had before? Unfortunately,
I can't verify this within the next 10 hours and I don't know how much
disk-space is really needed for suspend or hibernate... eventually as much as
the RAM I have (1.5GB)?

[Bug 15451] Re: Kubuntu / KDE SMB network error using openoffice word docs

2007-04-19 Thread Anastasios Hatzis
I confirm this bug on Kubuntu 6.10 (Edgy/32-bit) with latest OpenOffice
package 2.0.4-0ubuntu5 I could find.

Reproducable use-case A:
Start OpenOffice Writer
File -> Open
cd to Samba Shares, Windows network, select server, directory, and then select
a .doc or .odt file
click OK
Error message pops up:
Protocol "smb" is supported only partially. Local copy of the file will be
created.

The document is open, but is located in /tmp/kde-$USERNAME/

Reproducable use-case B: (as already described by others here)
OpenOffice Writer is not running yet!
Start Konqueror
cd to Samba Shares, Windows network, select server, directory, and then select
a .doc or .odt file
OOo splash screen pops up and disappears after a while
No OOo came up, no document shown, no error message shown.

This error prevents me from working reasonably with OOo in the office. I have
always to take care to move the files from the temp directory to the original
samba directory and vice versa, all in the correct versions and so on... this
costs time and is error-prone... that's not really funny. I wonder why this
error is still "unconfirmed" since it seems to be that this bug is pretty old.

[Bug 574460] [NEW] akonadi not operational - no contacts shown in kontact

2010-05-03 Thread Anastasios Hatzis
Public bug reported:

I have never configured or used Akonadi after I did a fresh install of
Kubuntu 9.10, but I didn't miss anything. Now I have done a dist-upgrade
to 10.04 and beside minor weird issues of Kontact (retrieving a few
older emails at pop3-cache accounts, needing more time for start-up
etc.), I realized that my address-book stored in "contacts"
(KAddressbook) just disappeared.

Instead of seeing my addresses that are still stored in the VCF, I can
only see the columns and in the center the error message "Akonadi not
operational". Clicking on the details link the Akonadi Server Self-Test
is started. I was (hopefully) able to fix MySQL-related error (InnoDB)
shown in earlier Self-Test, but not anymore. Even so, I don't want to
use Akonadi, it seems I have to fix these issues, but really, this goes
far over my head. Shouldn't stuff like these work out of the box? I
have no idea of MySQL database administration or of this D-Bus (whatever
that is). Did I finally mess things up, or is this a bug?

The current full report reads like this:

[Bug 574460] Re: akonadi not operational - no contacts shown in kontact

2010-06-07 Thread Anastasios Hatzis
Being the original poster, I agree to let this bug report rest in peace
("invalid"). The error happened on my production notebook and I
couldn't afford to loose more time, so I proceeded with a fresh install
of 10.04. Therefor I am not able to provide any further information
about the original problem.

Actually, I would like to whine and complain about the (for KDE and
Ubuntu) exceptionally bad user experience I had with akonadi (even with
my new installation), but I better submit a more useful bug-report at
the next occasion. Thanks for the support anyway.
