[Bug 376085] [NEW] VNC server doesn't bring up login screen

2009-05-13 Thread Alexander L. Belikoff
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vnc4server

When I run VNC server (package vnc4server on Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit) I am
able to connect to it but there is no login screen. The screen I get is
a gray stipple background and the standard X cursor. There is no login
screen and/or any kind of menu.

GDM has been configured to allow remote logins and in fact tightvnc
server works fine and is able to run the login manager, whereas the
canonical VNC server is not.

This was tested with both xinetd-started server and with a manually
started one.

[Bug 323240] [NEW] Kivio doesn't export to EPS

2009-01-30 Thread Alexander L. Belikoff
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kivio

Kivio is expected to export to EPS and some other vector formats as well
as to Dia format. None of those options are available. With kivio
1:1.6.3-0ubuntu5.2 and kivio-data 1:1.6.3-0ubuntu5.2 installed only a
handful of image formats is available (BMP, JPEG). After installing
koffice metapackage, several other formats appeard (TIFF and ILM) bot
still no PostScript/EPS and Dia formats.

[Bug 396169] [NEW] Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000 messes up keypad keys

2009-07-06 Thread Alexander L. Belikoff
Public bug reported:

Every 3 days or so, my Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000 starts messing up
the keypad keys. In a GOOD state, pressing the End key on the keypad
would generate the following events:

KeyPress event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x3a1,
root 0x237, subw 0x3a2, time 5911446, (53,48), root:(727,74),
state 0x0, keycode 87 (keysym 0xff9c, KP_End), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyRelease event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x3a1,
root 0x237, subw 0x3a2, time 5911542, (53,48), root:(727,74),
state 0x0, keycode 87 (keysym 0xff9c, KP_End), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

Pressing Ins and Del keys work similarly.

In a BAD state however, the situation is as follows:

* End key - KP_End WITH pointer movement

MotionNotify event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x3a1,
root 0x237, subw 0x3a2, time 5799275, (38,33), root:(712,59),
state 0x0, is_hint 0, same_screen YES

KeyRelease event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x3a1,
root 0x237, subw 0x3a2, time 5799395, (38,33), root:(712,59),
state 0x0, keycode 87 (keysym 0xff9c, KP_End), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

Note, that there is no KeyPress event, which makes the ley useless for
the apps that expect it.

* Del key - completely ignored
* Ins key - strange KeymapNotify event.

The problem is cured by unplugging the keyboard and then plugging it
back.

The system is AMD Opteron based Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit.

[Bug 133295] Re: Unable to burn dvd-r

2010-05-16 Thread Alexander L. Belikoff
Same problem here - started with Ubuntu 8.10 (Server) and seems to be
present in 10.04.

- SATA DVD drive
- DVD-RW media
- growisofs fails:

$ sudo growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/dvdrw -R -J /foo/bar
...
/dev/dvdrw: "Current Write Speed" is 2.0x1352KBps.
:-[ wr...@lba=0h failed with SK=5h/ILLEGAL MODE FOR THIS TRACK]: Input/output
error
:-( attempt to re-run with -dvd-compat -dvd-compat to engage DAO or apply full
blanking procedure
:-( write failed: Input/output error

- dvdrecord works fine however, which saves the day, but it's still
pretty annoying.

I had the same problem after upgrade to 8.10 Kubuntu. Disabling that service
did not work, killing kde4d did not work. Eventually killing krunner having
service disabled did the trick!
