[Bug 382703] Re: "Home Folder" has 3 different names

2009-06-17 Thread Alan Pope
Given no other bookmarks under Places have 'folder' appended to them,
why should 'home' ?

If I'm articulating to someone how to find their "home folder" or answer
the question "Where's my stuff?", then saying "Click places, then home"
sounds logical and succinct. By clicking 'Places' I'm saying I want to
'go to a place', and that 'place' might well be home. Makes sense in my
head anyway. :)

If we _did_ add 'folder' to home then by extension surely all the
bookmarks under Places should also get the added suffix. That would
bloat the places menu width-wise and look very messy.

[Bug 388878] [NEW] Network connections dialog unclear what 'never' means

2009-06-18 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

New user installs Ubuntu, then attempts to connect to their wireless
access point (for example 'BT-HomeHub'). As we know there are sometimes
reasons why wifi doesn't connect when it should. They may at some point
discover they can right click Network Manager panel applet and find
'Connection Info'. If they click the 'Wireless' tab they will see the
following:-

Auto BT-HomeHub never

Note the word "never". A new user has no idea what 'never' means because
there is no column heading, and there is no other connections (this
being the first) giving any clue that 'never' means 'you have never
connected (in the past)'. In fact some users I have met think it means
'never connect to to this access point'.

This could be easily resolved by adding a column heading 'Last connected
at:' or similar, or a tooltip.

[Bug 389458] [NEW] subpixel smoothing causes corruption

2009-06-19 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Sony PCG-R600 running 9.04 x86.

By default subpixel smoothing is on, which causes some nasty screen
corruption which is resolved when I switch rendering to 'Best Shapes'
instead of 'Subpixel smoothing (LCDs)'.

Screenshots show it better. Will attach.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386

[Bug 390993] [NEW] [Karmic] Screen blanks, and "(EE) intel(0): underrun on pipe B!" in log

2009-06-23 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Recently upgraded to Karmic and have enabled kms with "options i915
modeset=1" in /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf .

Logged into desktop connected to net, running apps when the screen went
blank. I could switch to tty and back to xorg, but the screen remained
blank. Applications were still running ( I was still connected to net
and audio was still playing from audacity ). I could control the
applications by (for example) pressing ALT+F4 to close something.

(EE) intel(0): underrun on pipe B!

Above line repeated many times in /var/log/Xorg.0.log which I have
attached in case ubuntu-bug didn't get it.

[Bug 391563] [NEW] Xorg crashed after enabling compiz

2009-06-24 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Updated to latest xorg intel video driver, tried to enable compiz. I
noted the appearance window appeared to get a drop shadow, as if it
_had_ enabled compiz. Then got the message that it could not enable it,
and the appearance window seemed to hang up. I switched to a tty to have
a look around, and shortly after X restarted.

[Bug 387272] [NEW] [karmic] long boot time on eee 900

2009-06-15 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Clean install of Karmic Alpha 2. During install ubiquity hung quite a
lot during disk activity/partitioning. Once installed I noted very long
boot times (2 mins or so) whereas under 9.04 I've been getting very
respectable boots.

Installed bootchart and have attached it.

[Bug 393142] [NEW] [karmic] dbus error/crash on SD card insertion

2009-06-28 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dbus

Inserting an SD card on my laptop causes a DBUS popup to appear. It
subsequently does not mount the device. I can manually mount it, so i
know the card is fine, and it's been reformatted in the recent past, so
I doubt it's corrupted. I also notice "Computer" and a mount to my
network storage device disappear from nautilus file browser.

Have attached a screenshot.

If I subsequently plug in the card again, no errors appear. However I
can trigger it to happen if I kill/restart nautilus.

[Bug 395085] [NEW] [karmic] gdm-user-switch-applet inconsistent labels

2009-07-03 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Ubuntu has 3 ways to get to the place where you set your photo, password
etc, and they are all called something different!

3) Left click my name in the panel (gdm-user-switch-applet) -> Account

You now found one. I like it. It's _unfinished_ and buggy (I have
reported a couple of bugs to help in that regard), but I like the
concept and look forward to it being finished and polished.

I realise this is just a bug report, and as such we should be focusing
on _bugs_ not necessarily opinionated rants. I just wanted you to know
there _are_ people out there who like it.

[Bug 334863] [NEW] [jaunty] notification are partially off-screen on res change

2009-02-26 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: notify-osd

If I change the resolution of my panel, subsequent notifications are off
the screen.

For example, my laptop panel is 1400x1050 and notifications appear at
the top left, on screen (although partially covering the panel - covered
by bug 330294). If I change my screen resolution (perhaps I'm using an
external display - or maybe for any other reason [in my case using a
lower resolution for screencasting]) the notification dialog goes off
the screen. Screenshot to follow.

[Bug 234915] Re: "OpenGL rendered transitions" extension crashes Impress

2008-11-05 Thread Alan Pope
Still crashing here.

Ubuntu 8.10 x86, OpenOffice.org 2.4 (standard in 8.10 repo as of today).
Intel 945GM graphics with compiz on or off, same effect.

To reproduce:-

Install package openoffice.org-ogltrans
Open OpenOffice.org Impress
Create new presentation of any kind
On the right side, choose slide transitions
Scroll down to the very bottom and select a slide transition such as "rochade,
static or fine dissolve, any of those right at the bottom".
OO.o crashes.

Had others reproduce under VirtualBox and on a machine with an ATI
card/driver, so not likely to be an intel driver issue. I'm pretty sure
I also hit this with the AMD64 version of Ubuntu before I reinstalled on
the same hardware as x86.

2008-11-06 Thread Alan Pope
I just tested this on my laptop which uses an nvidia card using the
nvidia binary driver and this works fine.

[Bug 278622] Re: Pan closes when clicking on 'Other Groups'

2008-11-03 Thread Alan Pope
You can probably get more information for the developers about the
segfault by getting a backtrace.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash - follow the first section, then
go to:-
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace to see how to generate a backtrace.

[Bug 285746] Re: System cleaner removes explicitly installed third-party packages

2008-11-08 Thread Alan Pope
I have downloaded and installed the new packages from liw.fi and created
a personal whitelist in /etc/cruft-remover.d/

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/cruft-remover.d$ cat personal.whitelist
deb:zattoo
deb:gitso
deb:virtualbox-2.0
deb:nautilus-dropbox

I can report that the system cleaner tool does indeed ignore those debs,
and on this laptop I now get no packages listed for removal.
