[Bug 353800] Re: restricted drivers (ATI) causes Xorg memory leakage
You must have missed a step to kill xorg and stop xserver from loading. I said this in my post that you can stop your GUI from being bootable. Have you tried purging, rm everything from /etc/ati (just in case, but this should be removed with purge) and reinstalling the ati-drivers through the recovery terminal? Also, did you follow the ati driver installation instructions and make sure you had all the required packages to build the drivers for your system correctly? Also make sure your settings in xorg.conf are setup correctly for all devices? And if the fglrx driver is not installed, make sure your xorg.conf is not looking for it. You might also want to try from a terminal dpkg-reconfigure -xserver- xorg once you reinstall the drivers. I just installed ati fglrx 9.5 today and reverted back to 9.4 with my own guide. You had to have missed a step. Do you see a black screen or does xorg actually report an error before you even get that far? Also, some googling might help as well to get you back in the GUI. I found these in the first set of results. You should also maybe start a post if your issue is not generic. http://forumubuntusoftware.info/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=3157 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=690760 Feel free to email me, sorry you're having issues, -Ais -- restricted drivers (ATI) causes Xorg memory leakage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/353800 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 381488] Re: Brasero changed/modified CD/DVD Burner Drive to no longer read as a boot device (causing a hardware failure).
Should I also replace the wodim as Schily said before I do so? I also noticed in the brasero log that it set the job mode to "dangerous". I'm not sure what that means, but in linux I take things very literally when it comes to warnings. My guess, is this "mode" is what caused the issue. I have not had the time to research how to compile the wodim yet. I have been extremely busy with work and also really reluctant to attempt burning on this new dvd burner. It appears I will need to compile the wodim myself and I am not sure 100% how to do this. I have only compiled my video card drivers so far. So this is the thing I need the time to research. If anyone could let me know what packages/libraries I need to do this would be very helpful to get me started. Or the place to find this information. Sony is %(#&$@ and these burners cost $200 a pop. Luckily I am still under warranty, but I do not think they will continue to send me dvd burners everytime I call them if something like this happens again. They already gave me a hassle about even having linux installed. But I told them it was for work. This would not be such a big deal if it was your random $25-30 burner off newegg that I could just RMA. I will try the things the both of you suggested. But some more direction/information would be very helpful. -Ais -- Brasero changed/modified CD/DVD Burner Drive to no longer read as a boot device (causing a hardware failure). https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/381488 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 201799] Re: Confusing mysqld startup failure with apparmor (Hardy)
Just had the same issue and followed the steps provided by Lost In Tokyo. This did not work for me. I then followed the steps by Kees Cook. Working fine with it disabled. I spent at least 3 hours trying to figure out what the cause of the issue was. My logs are identical, except I am moving the data to another drive mounted on the system. This is on Jaunty. In addition to apparmor disallowing mysql user to write to other directories, it also is preventing the memlock option from working which forces mysql to use additional system memory instead of the disk for buffers, etc, greatly increasing performance. mysql-server: 5.1.30really5.0.75-0ubuntu10.2 apparmor: 2.3+1289-0ubuntu14 -- Confusing mysqld startup failure with apparmor (Hardy) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201799 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 381488] [NEW] Brasero changed/modified CD/DVD Burner Drive to no longer read as a boot device (causing a hardware failure).
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: brasero I was preparing to move my root fs to another partition on the same hard drive. I booted to the Live CD to make sure my wireless was working in- case I needed it. (I am not a whiz at Linux yet). After rebooting and removing the Live CD from my Laptop (confirming that the DVD drive was a bootable at the time) I logged into my current installation of Jaunty. I then went to burn Super Grub (supergrubdisk.org) since I am not familiar with Grub's command line. The plan was to format the first bootable parition and move my current installation to that partition. I used a single layer DVD-R for the burn. In Brasero I choose the ISO from my home folder (as you will see in the log file from the Brasero). This was my first attempt at burning anything in Linux on this laptop. During the burn process the DVD burn had an error and stopped. I then went and decided to try a CD. The CD burn was successful. I rebooted and tossed the DVD that was unsuccessfully burned and when I sat down again at my Laptop I noticed I was at the Gnome login for my current installation. The Super Grub CD did not boot. My laptop completely skipped the CD boot process. I figured something must have happen during the burn. After seeing that disk was readable, I decided to try again. It did not work. I then stuck my Live CD in and that also no longer was bootable. It was at this point I knew something happen. I just got my replacement DVD drive today after arguing with Sony and everything is now working again, including the SuperGrub CD. To me it's clear that Brasero caused this hardware failure. Before the burn, the DVD drive was bootable and after the unsuccessful burn of the DVD, the DVD drive was no longer bootable. This all happened within a time frame of 20 minutes or less. I was waiting till my replacement drive arrived to confirm it was the DVD drive that failed. The original damaged drive was an Optiarc, the replacement drive appears to be Pioneer. I am using a Sony Vaio Laptop, VGN-FW139E. It is 9 months old and I have had no issues until now. At this point I am scared to burn anything with Brasero or anything at all on Linux until someone can provide any advice or some information on how to avoid an issue like this or prevent it in the future. Please advise and also let me know any information at all I can provide that will be helpful in resolving this problem. [Bug 353800] Re: restricted drivers (ATI) causes Xorg memory leakage
Memory leak fixed on my machine. NOT completely, but the change is DRASTIC compared to what I was seeing before. For testing, I opened firefox which had 12 tabs, system monitor, nautilus, terminal with transparency, and evolution. I also ran glxgears and I am seeing 500-600 FPS more! glxgears is now up to 1500-1600 on HD3400 Series. I booted with Xorg at 65mb, after running these applications and glxgears. Also maximizing and minimizing each window repeatedly since this clearly showed the leak the most, Xorg is freeing up memory and garbage collecting quite well! Xorg is now at 76-77mb. Open is firefox with 5 tabs and system monitor. Normally before, Xorg would be at 130-170mb at least after this. Especially after minimize and maximize so many times. So at this point, an 11-12mb increase after all that is VERY acceptable compared to before. Anyway, what I did was this... I downloaded the official driver from ATI's website. 9.4 catalyst. I followed the instructions to install the drivers manually from the link below line for line; When I built the packages I had the previous driver still installed from envyng. I also left compiz running with all my desktop effects enabled. I'm not sure how relevant that is, but it is what I did. This is not for the faint of heart! Be cautious and patient, READ CAREFULLY and follow the instructions word for word! If you mess this up, ubuntu will more than likely not be bootable into the GUI after. If something is wrong, ubuntu will freeze at boot probably with some messed up crap on the screen. You will have to remove the fglrx packages from the recovery terminal. (which happened to me once already). http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Jaunty_Installation_Guide#Installing_the_drivers_manually After installation was complete, I did not reboot immediately. I backed up first /etc/ati/amdpcsdb and then removed it from that directory. Then I rebooted... After reboot, i DID NOT do aticonfig --initial OR aticonfig --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf. And I don't plan on it. My xorg.conf is a mess at the moment and not complete, but I attached it anyway since the video card driver settings I am using are there and are complete. But I've read that without running aticonfig --input, the ati driver doesn't read the xorg.conf settings. Not sure one way or the other right now honestly. But I'm not running it. Anyway, Good luck! ** Attachment added: "xorg.conf" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/26487650/xorg.conf -- restricted drivers (ATI) causes Xorg memory leakage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/353800 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I have been on google looking into this issue (which I did not have the time for at work earlier). I found this error has been reported dating back to 2009. I also found that this is not isolated to the Ubuntu kernel as I found reports on Fedora as well. So the problem is across distributions and has existed for some time. I found that the majority of other users from the brief reading I did only experienced disconnected wifi. However in my case, this issue resulted in data loss due to the hard lock I experienced. [Bug 557521] Re: Provide ability to block a contact
Personally, I've stopped using empathy for lacking this feature and a few others that would not be appropriate to mention on this bug. This bug should be moved to a high importance status considering that people online can be abusive, annoying, stalk you, etc. Not to mention spam. I read that the reason this feature does not exist is because of the "available to all" philosophy. How much truth I do not know. If that is true and is what is keeping this feature from being added, please leave your home unlocked at night. Might as well bring it full circle. -- Provide ability to block a contact https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/557521 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
