I think 'they' are aware, it's not the first time this happens. Viz
recent RAID debacle that made all systems using software raid unbootable
yet it took more then 10 months to fix (it's fixed now). I hoped Mark
Shuttleworth would put something on his blog abou this but no such luck.

I am also an advocate of gnu/linux and more specific Ubuntu - but
sometimes I do feel a really cold shower, and have to try explaining to
people why even tough my laptop has degraded after upgrade to Jaunty, I
still want to recommend Ubuntu as the more promising distro because of
Launchpad and the community in general. I wish this problem would be
addressed at a more global level. It indeed sucks to discuss this in bug
reports, but I can't seem to find a good way to discuss it elsewhere.

I emailed him about the RAID debacle. Never got a reaction. But there's
a bigger picture then just an graphics or a RAID bug - it's about
releasing stuff that might not be ready for 'production' and alienates a
lot of users.

I agree, I installed Jaunty on my laptop, the good thing was that the
wireless started working for the first time! But the graphics are
sluggisch. I enabled UXA and it doesn't crash but it's slowish.

Ubuntu's demise will be that changes are pushed that are not ready for
release or break the system. Watch how many sysadmins reverted to Debian
after the RAID debacle. It took 1.4 year to fix the bug that Ubuntu
introduced in RAID (the bug was never in Debian).
It was also never acknowledged as a failure.

I think there is a chance that after all these bug reports and people
that complain - people that took the effort of installing a prerelease
Jaunty and reporting bugs! Important people! ... that Canonical/Ubuntu
will still ship the shitty driver and just bad luck for those 10% of
customers. And that this will put off those people that took the effort
to participate.

So, concluding, I sincerely hope that 'they' will revert to the older
driver that worked splendidly under Intrepid. Or give a choice while
upgrading.

Cheers,

[Bug 176325] Re: Network manager loses settings on reboot

2009-03-10 Thread Ace Suares
Still reproducable in Intrepid.

Steps to reproduce:
1. go to network-manager by right-clicking the network-manager icon
2. click 'edit connections'
3. choose auto eth0 or whatever your wired connection is
4. edit, then go to ip4 setings
5. Change DHCP to manual
6. Enter a fixed ip addres, netmask and gateway.
7. close, check if the ip changed
8. reboot
9. you will see that network-manager reverted the wired connection back to dhcp.

Hi,

For me it can not be closed.

It is simple to reproduce:

1. Make a new mail with the following:
to: some-address
cc: other-address
bcc: secret-address

2. send the mail.

3. go to send-mail folder, and right click this message, then click Send

4. You will see:
to: some-address
cc: other-address

(and no bcc).

No it's not.

There is a procedure for that, so it will be updated automatically. That
procedure I followed but at some point in the procedure, powers
of 'normal' people are insufficient. We have to find an overlord who will
sponsor the process and move it forward. Even the developer who made the
patch for Ibex, can not move this forward on his own.

Where are the Power Puff Girls when you need them ?

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2008-10-09 Thread Ace Suares
Dustin,

I am glad you may be spending some time on this bug.

You mention rebuilding ISO's. But why can't it just be an upgrade to the
existing installations?
I mean, on an existing system, all we need to do is upgrade ?

Also, I am not being sarcastic at all, when I say that I can not
understand that there needs to be so much regression testing for the
patch that removes the bug, since to introduce the bug was possible at
all. The bug is not present in Debian, and was not present in Dapper.

Anyway, I am going to install the workaround on all my affected machines
because I cannot wait that long. (But then I will get some trouble when
an update finally comes around..).

And I am not going to advice using Ubuntu for servers that use software
raid anymore. I am really disappointed in the way this is going. I am
happy it will be fixed in Ibex tough. Just keep smiling...

I am also unsubscribing from this bug. I feel that I am becoming
unconstructive.

[Bug 123916] Re: fail2ban will not start if fail2ban socket is present

2008-10-04 Thread Ace Suares
Ubuntu is getting worse and worse. This bug bit me too. It was all
working fine but after a reboot, it stopped working and I only noticed
because there where so many failed authentication attempts in the
logfiles.

And again, just like the bug with software raid that makes your machine
unbootable, it seems fixed in Debian.

It can't be long before I have to switch to Debian. Dapper is fine, but
Hardy sucks severely!

* Fixing plone-site on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy
When you try to install plone-site on Ubuntu Hardy, the installation
fails with the following error:
dzhandle make-instance: service user must be specified as user:group
Here is a link to the apropriate launchpad bug.
To fix it, you might take the following route. Install plone-site and
tons of zope packages, but fail ultimately:
  sudo apt-get install plone-site
  Edit the postinst file:
  joe /var/lib/dpkg/info/plone-site.postinst
  Change line 81 from
  --service-port=$port --service-user=zope $ZEOSERVER
  to
  --service-port=$port --service-user=zope:zope $ZEOSERVER
Instead of joe, you might want to use vi, nano, or any of your favorite
editors.
Now reconfigure plone-site and all is well that ends well:
  dpkg-reconfigure plone-site

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2008-08-14 Thread Ace Suares
Comment 91 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/120375/comments/91) worked
for me.
I didn't need the extra lvm stuff but it can't hurt.

I was booting from /dev/sdb1, which was the 'failed' drive from
/dev/md0.

In /etc/fstab, I had /dev/md0 als /, and it shows up as such in 'df'.

But /dev/md0 was not really mounted as root; is was /dev/sdb1 altough it
*says* it's /dev/md0. This is a bug I think.

So I made the changes to the initramfs script, and did update-initramfs -u. BUT
THAT HAPPENS ON /dev/sdb1 !
So I had to do this:

mount -t ext3 /dev/md0 /mnt
cd /mnt
chroot .
# Change the script in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local ! the
previous change was on /dev/sdb1 !!!
update-initramfs -u
exit # from the chroot
reboot

This took me ten hours or more (linux-haters !)

Doesn't anyone think it's *really bad* that all 8.04 installs fail
horribly when the root raid-array degrades !? Those machines won't boot
at all when that happens !

And it's not going to be fixed in 8.04 ? How can this be !?

It's extremely weird that the Debian distro doesn't have this bug (or
behaviour) and Ubuntu has. But dapper didn't have it; so switching from
dapper to hardy burns you -without- knowing it. Because your md's have
been working great for years, and they where up when you upgraded.

Now then, when one of your root disks fails, you feel safe - you get an
email and go to the datacenter and try to reboot. Bummer. And I dare you
to be able to bring it up again - it won't be easy unless you brought
some instructions!

The community brouhgt forward a possible solution within this thread -
it's not that hard to fix, is it ?

[Bug 249656] [NEW] Javascript 'move and resize existing windows' should be OFF by default

2008-07-17 Thread Ace Suares
Public bug reported:

While surfing, I hit a website that suddenly maximized my FF window.

This felt very odd.

I discussed this with someone, and I was told to go to Edit->
Preferences-> Content-> Javascript/Advanced and disable the 'Move and
resize existing windows'.

After I did that, the site did not maximize my FF window anymore.

I suggest that this option be turned OFF by default (just like all the
other options in that dialog are turned off by default).

Even the more when you have upgraded from dapper LTS to hardy LTS and you
*think* you are all peachy. Big surprise the first time when the root
array degrades. Very unacceptable by all means.

Thanks for adressing this tough. But is it going to be worked into an
upgrade for the system or do we have to manually patch ? And if it's an
upgrade, will I be suffciently warned now I have patched a workaround
into the iniramfs scripts ?

I totally agree.

The system seems to hang at a certain point, and when you wait long enough
(180s as far as I understand from this discussion) and then drops you
into initramfs.

I tried 999 different ways of modifying grub, fstab, mdadm.conf becasue I
didn't know WHY the system couldn't boot.

The fact was that I very well KNEW the array was degraded, too. A warning
message would have helped tremendously.

Also, since there is no message and no indication of what was wrong, I had
a very hard time finding this thread. I almost exploded when I found the
thread, saw it's age, and all the possible workarounds, and the fact that
it is not a problem in Debian.

This behaviour really and very strongly diminishes my trust in Ubuntu as a
system for my servers.

Just a question: have you any idea how many systems are affected? The
popularity contest says:
 mdadm 25199 5566 19467 15610

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2008-08-19 Thread Ace Suares
** Description changed:

+ The impact of the bug on users: Systems with root on a RAID array will
+ not be able to boot if the array is degraded. Usrs affected by this will
+ encounter an unusable system after a reboot (say, a kernel upgrade).
+
+ Justification for backporting the fix to the stable release: Hardy is a
+ LTS edition. It is expected that people will continue to use this
+ version and not upgrade to Intrepid. People who have upgrade from Dapper
+ LTS to Hardy LTS are affected too.
+
+ TEST CASE
+ Build a clean system with root on RAID, with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. Degrade the
root array. Reboot and shiver.
+
+ A discussion of the regression potential of the patch and how users could get
inadvertently effected.
+ - the only users that could be affected, as fas as know, are the ones that
already made a workaround and altered their system files accordingly.
+
+
  Binary package hint: mdadm

if i unplug one hd from raid1 i cannot successfully boot because raid

Login to X again. DONT USE THE NUMPAD!
Now you can uncheck the pointer can be again. If you use the numpad now, you
can still mo ve the mouse but can not click anywhere (and thus also not uncheck
that option.

[Bug 339198] [NEW] Ubuntu hangs; Intel G33 low resolution

2009-03-07 Thread Ace Suares
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

On an ASRock motherboard with built-in Intel G33:
- Booted Intrepid LiveCD. Worked fine.
- Installed Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 from the LiveCD.
- After mandatory reboot, a black screen with a dialog saying that Ubuntu is
running in low graphics mode.
- Mouse and keyboard don't react. Have to reset (cold boot) the computer.

- Rebooted in Recovery mode. Tried XFIX, didn't work.
- Did apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. Rebooted. Same problem.

- Rebooted, but now with older kernel. The LiveCD installed 2.6.27-11 and
2.6.27-7.
- Normal boot (not recovery boot) with 2.6.27-7 worked perfectly!
- Updates where available in update-manager. These installed new 2.6.27-11
kernel stuff.

- Reboot (with new kernel 2.6.27-11) worked perefectly!

I also noticed that with the 27-11 kernel, a message scrolled the screen that
there was something wrong with binfmt_misc but I can not find that in syslog or

That message was not in the 27-7 kernel messages.

[Bug 339198] Re: Ubuntu hangs; Intel G33 low resolution

2009-03-07 Thread Ace Suares
So, to solve this problem (Ubuntu hangs on Intel G33 after intalling
Intrepid from LiveCD) you could do this:

1. Reboot, pressing ESC to get the GRUB menu, and start with kernel 2.6.27-7
(not recovery mode).
2. use update manager to upgrade your system
3. reboot normally

or

1. Reboot, pressing ESC to get the GRUB menu and start a kernel in recovery mode
2. Make sure you have internet connection (ifconfig, route add default gw)
3. apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade

Thank you Geir for your response! It is important to users that submit
bugs to have the feeling that someone is reading them and acting upon them.

Could this be put in the release notes? It's a problem with every
Intrepid LiveCD combined with at least the Intel G33, so that's a lot of
them. And since it's simple to solve (boot in older installed kernel, do
updates, reboot) it may save people time.

On another note, couldn't the release notes be the opening page for the
LiveCD? That way a lot more people would see the release notes?

You install the Ubuntu 8.10 from the live cd and then you end up with a
frozen machine. Isn't that clear enough? The installer does not fix it,
otherwise I would never have experienced the problem.

Only by starting with an older kernel will enable you to do the updates.

Re: [Bug 402767] Re: multisearch CSE breaks l18n+setfocus+images+cached+I'm feeling lucky functionality and "violates user trust"

2009-08-14 Thread Ace Suares

Good day,

I will explain the reason why I was shocked. Not why A USER was shocked.
It may help the marketing people at Canonical to improve their efforts
to eliminate launchpad bug #01

The reason why I was shocked is that the new 'google' homepage lacked
functionality that I had on the old 'google' homepage. On the old page
there was a bar with buttons that made it very easy to switch from web
search to image search and video search (and some others that I use less).

To stress this fact, I couldn't care less if Canonical would make money
of my searches or did some aggregate data collection (anonymously I
presume). Actually, I would be happy of they can make money of my
searches for 'Ubuntu 9.04 copy paste functionality third mouse button
vanished' or 'Ubuntu Jaunty Firefox memory problem'. Be my guest!

It's just that I got used to using that one google page for nearly all
my searches and that it had some great buttons that disappeared after an
Ubuntu upgrade. And that it was hard to find the way back. (Hint:
disable multi search add-on in firefox).

That's all I gotta say about that.

[Bug 67578] on dualhead, second screen turns yellow

2006-10-22 Thread Ace Suares
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: childsplay

When starting childsplay on a dual head machine, the second screen turns
yellow (like it has a yellow 50% transparant layer over it).

Also, you can not leave the window of childsplay to do stuff in the
second window - the mouse is restrained to childsplay (but maybe that's
a feature?)

This, is in Edgy.

[Bug 67587] report bug nonexistant package

2006-10-22 Thread Ace Suares
Public bug reported:

In launchpad,

when reporting a bug for a non existant package (I tried gnome
webbrowser) after submit, it notifies of some errors, something like
'choose an existing package or choose 'Idon't know'.

When choosing 'I Don't know' BUT LEAVING THE NONEXISTANT PACKAGE NAME
FILLED IN... after submit, it notifies 'please fix errors' but there are
no errors mentioned.

Only after choosing 'I don't know' AND removing the wrong package name,

[Bug 67599] after console login, x does not come up

2006-10-22 Thread Ace Suares
Public bug reported:

This in Kubuntu Edgy.

When the login screen apperas, you can choose a 'console login' from the
dropdown menu.

You will then be presented with a shell. After login, doing some things
and then logging out, the machine stays in console mode. In Dapper, it
went back to graphic mode after some seconds, if I recall correctly.

apt-get remove bonjour on itself didn't work.

[Bug 69024] Re: On some thin clients, screen is garbled

2006-11-03 Thread Ace Suares
Unfortunately, it is NOT related to hardware.

On the disklessworkstation Term150 the Gnome splash screen is garbled -
but not always. If it is, applications like gcomris are also garbled.

Actually, sound is working ONLY in Gnome system sounds, like 'login'
sound and such.

But when clicking on the volume control, an error about not being able
to find a gstreamerplugin.

Sound doesn't work in any application but it works in 'system sounds'.

[Bug 70260] PC105 keyboard: letter P don't work

2006-11-04 Thread Ace Suares
Public bug reported:

After a clean install of Edgy, I got stuck with a pc105 keyboard. I
don't know why or what, but after a while I noticed that I couldn't use
the 'p'. After writing several emails to my contacts, with words in them
like 'combuter' and 'cut and baste' I found the answer on IRC - use
pc104.

If I go to keybaord shortcuts (while using pc105 keyboard), and I type a 'a' as
accelerator, it warns me not to use that letter since your keyboard will be
less useful. But with the 'p', this warning doesn't come up and the accelerator
becomes '0x21'.
If I then AGAIN define an accelerator (for the PLAY/STOP button), the
accelerator becomes 'X86AudioConfig' or something like that. If I do it again,
it's back to 0x21

This was the most fun bug I have encountered so far. I have thrown a
keyboard in the trash for this !

By the way, in terminal mode (alt-ctrl-f1) the P works normal..

Do I need to install edubuntu instead of ubuntu ? An apt-get install should
work, whatever way, shouldn't it ? I'm confused.

Indeed, an /etc/ltsp directory was not made, I was looking for the
dhcpd.conf there and couldn't find it. That was before I did the
reconfigure / install.

Cheers.

[Bug 70833] Re: edubuntu-artwork problems

2006-11-07 Thread Ace Suares
In the postinst script, a check is done on

/cdrom/.disk/info

Since I had the cdrom mounted (the Ubuntu Edgy CDROM) it did find that file.
Apparently, ls -1 /cdrom/pool/main/e/edubuntu-artwork/edubuntu-artwork-usplash*
did not work... because it's the ubuntu cd ???

hmmm.

cheers

PS i ejected the cd, hence [ -f /cdrom/.disk/info ] was false, so now
the install completed !
