[Bug 195778] Re: System crash periodically with Compiz (especially using firefox)
my system (ubuntu 9.04) crashed when logging out. I only logged out as my sound card was skipping badly and alsa driver kept failing and a message saying reverting to pulseaudio kept popping up. After each mp3 played any application i used would have to have the task ended and application restarted before i could resume playback. Re: [Bug 1066871]
Yes this was a bug report about ubuntu 'make link' so it had no package. There is even some dispute over whether this is a bug, or whether ubuntu is working as planned, only that it could be doing it a whole lot better. The counter arguments are laid out in the link in the initial report. [Bug 1066871] [NEW] The command 'Make Link' creates multiple file copies
Public bug reported: (Note:- 64bit 12.04 ubuntu (and variants of it) do not exist! So I have had to say that I don't know where I found the bug.) This looks like a serious bug to me - others have confirmed this by repeating the test below: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=12296573#post12296573 *** Try to make a document link: Open Gedit - copy and paste a few bytes of text - save as 'AA-test' in your document dir. Open Nautilus and check your doc dir - yes it's there. Rclick it - 'make link'. What you now see is a new file called 'Link to AA-test ' - both are the same file size. Dclick the 'Link to' file and delete a couple of bytes (2 characters), and save. My sys is set to make bakups, so I now see: Link To AA-test~_ 945bytes AA-test 943bytes Link To AA-test__ 945bytes The above is clearly incorrect cos my bakup file is called 'Link To' Now open 'AA-test' directly, and delete 2 more characters and save. I now see: AA-test 941bytes Link To AA-test~_ 945bytes AA-test~___ 943bytes Link To AA-test__ 945bytes It seems conclusive that 'make Link' is not functioning correctly. Further tests can be made, eg. rename 'Link To' - 'Linq To'. When you load it in Gedit, top-left informs you are working on 'Linq To AA-test'. Apart from this being confusing.. it looks like instead of having a small link file, my doc, and my bakup doc. I now have 4 full size docs wasting space on my HDisk. This is surely a bug no? ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1066871 Title: The command 'Make Link' creates multiple file copies To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1066871/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 13319] Re: nautilus should sort by extensions
Nautilus 2.32.2.1 All those years ago, Vincent was absolutely correct. Over 6 years later...6 years, and still the same horrendous problem exists. (In reply to comment #1) > I'm not sure that's useful to add such options. Yes it is.. my goodness... Yes it is! It's not just useful ... It's an utter necessity. I read with horror, the response made by Seb Bacher: "I'm sure that some people have some files sorted in a best way with the type rather than the extension." I just don't see how this statement can be true. One can't rename files, or change extensions at whim, so how can anybody have them sorted in the best way, by using type?? It just doesn't work: /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/70603113.PMO /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/A9OL4VF8.PMO /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/ADDR64C2.PM! /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/ADDR64C2.PMR /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/ALLADDS.PM! /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/ALLADDS.PMR /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/B1EBOV2P.PMO /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/B1R3F2HD.PMO /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/BEGJ8868.PMO /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/BUSINESS.PM! /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/BUSINESS.PMR /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/DESKTOP.PM0 /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/EOWM12D2.PMO In the above example, the directory contains many hundreds of files, and it is mission critical that I have them grouped together, for staged pasting into a new folder. [Bug 366968] [NEW] Update manager flashes on screen before being minimized
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: update-manager When there are updates in Jaunty (904) and the update manager starts, it shows the update-manager window and shows the window minimizing (with animation). This can be seen when all other windows have been minimized or when there are no windows in the way of the update-manager window. This behavior is very distracting and grabs the users attention as it flashes on the screen, the exact thing the "new" notification system is supposed to prevent. This is just my opinion but maybe a better solution is that when the update manager starts it is in the background but doesn't have its task listed in the panel. Just like the dialog box that is popped up when downloading/installing things in synaptic (I'm not sure if this is even possible). Thus making in unable to be minimized only closed, this would also remove it from the ALT-TAB list. Another alternative might be that the update manager doesn't show up in the task panel until it is minimized, essentially popping open in the background but not visible until you change and/or minimize the window you are working in. Notes: 1. This is seen when not using a composite desktop, I'm not sure of the behavior when you do run one. 2. The attached video was captured with Xvidcap, I apologize for it not being in Theora but it is viewable with VLC ** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Update manager flashes on screen before being minimized https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/366968 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk
Dustin, I am glad you may be spending some time on this bug. You mention rebuilding ISO's. But why can't it just be an upgrade to the existing installations? I mean, on an existing system, all we need to do is upgrade ? Also, I am not being sarcastic at all, when I say that I can not understand that there needs to be so much regression testing for the patch that removes the bug, since to introduce the bug was possible at all. The bug is not present in Debian, and was not present in Dapper. Anyway, I am going to install the workaround on all my affected machines because I cannot wait that long. (But then I will get some trouble when an update finally comes around..). And I am not going to advice using Ubuntu for servers that use software raid anymore. I am really disappointed in the way this is going. I am happy it will be fixed in Ibex tough. Just keep smiling... I am also unsubscribing from this bug. Ubuntu is getting worse and worse. This bug bit me too. It was all working fine but after a reboot, it stopped working and I only noticed because there where so many failed authentication attempts in the logfiles. And again, just like the bug with software raid that makes your machine unbootable, it seems fixed in Debian. It can't be long before I have to switch to Debian. [Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk
Comment 91 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/120375/comments/91) worked for me. I didn't need the extra lvm stuff but it can't hurt. I was booting from /dev/sdb1, which was the 'failed' drive from /dev/md0. In /etc/fstab, I had /dev/md0 als /, and it shows up as such in 'df'. But /dev/md0 was not really mounted as root; is was /dev/sdb1 altough it *says* it's /dev/md0. This is a bug I think. So I made the changes to the initramfs script, and did update-initramfs -u. BUT THAT HAPPENS ON /dev/sdb1 ! So I had to do this: mount -t ext3 /dev/md0 /mnt cd /mnt chroot . # Change the script in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local ! the previous change was on /dev/sdb1 !!! update-initramfs -u exit # from the chroot reboot This took me ten hours or more (linux-haters !) Doesn't anyone think it's *really bad* that all 8.04 installs fail horribly when the root raid-array degrades !? Those machines won't boot at all when that happens ! And it's not going to be fixed in 8.04 ? But dapper didn't have it; so switching from dapper to hardy burns you -without- knowing it. Because your md's have been working great for years, and they where up when you upgraded. The system seems to hang at a certain point, and when you wait long enough (180s as far as I understand from this discussion) and then drops you into initramfs. I tried 999 different ways of modifying grub, fstab, mdadm.conf becasue I didn't know WHY the system couldn't boot. The fact was that I very well KNEW the array was degraded, too. A warning message would have helped tremendously. Also, since there is no message and no indication of what was wrong, I had a very hard time finding this thread. [Bug 339198] [NEW] Ubuntu hangs; Intel G33 low resolution
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel On an ASRock motherboard with built-in Intel G33: - Booted Intrepid LiveCD. Worked fine. - Installed Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 from the LiveCD. - After mandatory reboot, a black screen with a dialog saying that Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. - Mouse and keyboard don't react. Have to reset (cold boot) the computer. - Rebooted in Recovery mode. Tried XFIX, didn't work. - Did apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. Rebooted. Same problem. - Rebooted, but now with older kernel. The LiveCD installed 2.6.27-11 and 2.6.27-7. - Normal boot (not recovery boot) with 2.6.27-7 worked perfectly! - Updates where available in update-manager. These installed new 2.6.27-11 kernel stuff. - Reboot (with new kernel 2.6.27-11) worked perefectly! [Bug 339198] Re: Ubuntu hangs; Intel G33 low resolution
So, to solve this problem (Ubuntu hangs on Intel G33 after intalling Intrepid from LiveCD) you could do this: 1. Reboot, pressing ESC to get the GRUB menu, and start with kernel 2.6.27-7 (not recovery mode). 2. use update manager to upgrade your system 3. reboot normally or 1. Reboot, pressing ESC to get the GRUB menu and start a kernel in recovery mode 2. It is important to users that submit bugs to have the feeling that someone is reading them and acting upon them. Could this be put in the release notes? It's a problem with every Intrepid LiveCD combined with at least the Intel G33, so that's a lot of them. And since it's simple to solve (boot in older installed kernel, do updates, reboot) it may save people time. On another note, couldn't the release notes be the opening page for the LiveCD? Re: [Bug 402767] Re: multisearch CSE breaks l18n+setfocus+images+cached+I'm feeling lucky functionality and "violates user trust"
Good day, I will explain the reason why I was shocked. Not why A USER was shocked. It may help the marketing people at Canonical to improve their efforts to eliminate launchpad bug #01 The reason why I was shocked is that the new 'google' homepage lacked functionality that I had on the old 'google' homepage. On the old page there was a bar with buttons that made it very easy to switch from web search to image search and video search (and some others that I use less). To stress this fact, I couldn't care less if Canonical would make money of my searches or did some aggregate data collection (anonymously I presume). Actually, I would be happy of they can make money of my searches for 'Ubuntu 9.04 copy paste functionality third mouse button vanished' or 'Ubuntu Jaunty Firefox memory problem'. Be my guest! It's just that I got used to using that one google page for nearly all my searches and that it had some great buttons that disappeared after an Ubuntu upgrade. And that it was hard to find the way back. (Hint: disable multi search add-on in firefox). That's all I gotta say about that. John Moser wrote: > This is a stupid argument.
