[Bug 371109] [NEW] MCC doesn't set up bttv IR remote - should use dev/input

2009-05-02 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythbuntu-control-centre

I have a bttv card (Winfast 2000XP card=34) and chose the card in the drop-down
list of remotes in Jaunty Mythbuntu. I thought this would set up the card, but
it did not. I have now made this work and feel that the steps that I took
could be automated (see my "Answer" at:
https://answers.launchpad.net/mythbuntu/+question/54983
, made into a script and run whenever somebody chose this card from the list.

$ grep -A 4 bttv /proc/bus/input/devices
will give the input device at the end of the last line:

N: Name="bttv IR (card=34)"
P: Phys=pci-:03:07.0/ir0
S: Sysfs=/devices/pci:00/:00:14.4/:03:07.0/input/input6
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=kbd event6

Ship http://linux.bytesex.org/v4l2/linux-input-layer-lircd.conf with MCC
and put it in /etc/lircd.conf at this stage.

Then generate a *correct* /etc/lirc/hardware.conf to read:
# /etc/lirc/hardware.conf
#
#Chosen Remote Control
REMOTE="Winfast TV2000/XP (card"
REMOTE_MODULES="bttv"
REMOTE_DRIVER="dev/input"
REMOTE_DEVICE="/dev/input/[EVENTNUM FROM ABOVE]"
REMOTE_LIRCD_CONF="leadtek/lircd.conf.RM-0010"
REMOTE_LIRCD_ARGS=""

I'm happy to test any scripts that are proposed. The problem with a GUI
that says it configures LIRC for the bttv remote is that you expect it
to work when you select it. I was quite disappointed to have to figure
it out for myself (by asking on the LIRC list).

[Bug 106910] Re: Unable to mount Data DVD created under Windows XP or Vista that are in UDF format

2009-04-29 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
I am getting this error in Jaunty. Same issue as Dylan - neither gnome-
mount nor mounting from the command line works and the same output that
he posted:

[Bug 293312] [NEW] [Intrepid][Regression] Rt61pci wireless stopped working between Beta and Final Live CDs

2008-11-03 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

This was working perfectly on Intrepid Beta and has regressed to not working
when I try the Intrepid Final Live CD.
Network-manager cannot connect to my access point, even when I disable all
security (both MAC filtering and encryption - it is now completely open). I
have no issues connecting with an IPW2200. When I put in the WPA2 AP
passphrase, the icon spins for a while and then fails.
Can anybody help me figure out where the issue is?
The driver is "rt61pci".

My lspci.txt [1.16 KiB] can be found in my earlier bug report (about Hardy) to
the forums:
http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4827

[Bug 173161] Re: Split patent-infringing CODEC plugins into a package for each format

2008-11-01 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Breaking the law isn't binary - you can be stung for each count or have
damages vary based on the extent of infringement. More than that,
people may have acquired patent licenses for various formats (MPEG
patents through some DVD playing software that they have on Windows
etc.) or the patent in question may not be enforceable in the user's
jurisdiction.

As I said - there are other reasons that I think that this is important
aside from illegality, but that is the most serious.

[Bug 130587] Re: New upstream version available

2008-10-06 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
FreeSCI 0.6.4 released, older releases retracted
Author: jameson Date: Sun 18. May 2008
FreeSCI 0.6.4 has been released; this release supersedes all previous releases.
0.6.4 is mostly a bugfix release, finally rendering most SCI0 games beatable
(SCI0 games that have been confirmed to be beatable include LSL2, LSL3, QfG1/HQ
and SQ3).

Even though 0.6.4 is not quite as stable as our previous stable branch, we have
decided to have it replace the stable branch due to potentially unclean code
(code that may have been derived directly from SCI interpreter disassembly).
Since FreeSCI is intended as a clean-room re-implementation of Sierra SCI, we
do not permit such code in our code base; we have therefore replaced it with
clean code (thanks to help from Max Horn).
FreeSCI 0.6.4 further includes some improvements to the audio subsystem, but
please note that all of these still require manual source code changes in order
to be enabled:

* MT-32 emulator support (Walter) (note that this requires MT-32 ROM files)
* General MIDI support for SCI1 games
* a CAMD MIDI driver for newer AmigaOS versions

Meanwhile, please enjoy 0.6.4, and report any bugs you find to the bug tracker!

Thanks Marc,

I really appreciate the help.

That command doesn't give me anything from any button pushes (with any
remotes).

I'll try 8.10 soon, but not before it is a little less "alpha" as the
g/f will not be impressed if I stop Mythbuntu from working!

I just tested an Alpha 6 live CD and, without installing anything,

[Bug 51779] Re: IRDA-Devices are not created by default (ircomm: 161-0

2008-09-19 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Testing on Intrepid Alpha 6. Originally, there were no /dev/ircomm
devices. When I modprobe ircomm and ircomm-tty, I have:

$ ls /dev/ircomm*
/dev/ircomm0 /dev/ircomm15 /dev/ircomm21 /dev/ircomm28 /dev/ircomm6
/dev/ircomm1 /dev/ircomm16 /dev/ircomm22 /dev/ircomm29 /dev/ircomm7

/dev/ircomm13 /dev/ircomm2 /dev/ircomm26 /dev/ircomm4
/dev/ircomm14 /dev/ircomm20 /dev/ircomm27 /dev/ircomm5

I don't actually know whether it is doing anything, or why I have so
many, as I don't really know how to test. Typing "hexdump -C" and
pressing the remote at the IR sensor doesn't give any output.

If not, then the problem is not in LIRC, but the kernel driver which is
part of the Linux kernel.

Have you made sure that you are using the correct config file?

Christoph

My response:
No, we tested that and there was no output.

I thought that, given there were no events coming through, the config
file wouldn't matter - is that the case? I selected my remote in the
Mythbuntu Control Centre GUI, but I'm pretty new to all of this...

So, according to them, my problem is in the kernel.

[Bug 234680] [NEW] MCC should have option to detect ir input device

2008-05-24 Thread Aaron Whitehouse

I accidentally selected the incorrect Winfast IR remote device when
setting up MCC.

I realised this when I opened Mythbackend setup and it told me that I

set the input device without asking the user.

[Bug 234678] [NEW] MCC should (have option to?) write TVOut PAL/NTSC information to xorg.conf

2008-05-24 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythbuntu-control-centre

When I first installed Mythbuntu 8.04, I chose to install the
proprietary drivers for the nVidia (as I understand that Free nv ones do
not support the TVOut on a GeForce4 Ti 4600).

The screen worked, but was black and white. Thankfully, I had somebody
over who had experienced the problem before and knew that it was because
the PAL setting was incorrect. Using as a guide, we set the xorg.conf
section to read:

Section "Screen"
[...]
Option "TVStandard" "PAL-B"
EndSection

I had already told Mythbuntu that NZ's TV standard was PAL B/G. It
would be great if Mythbuntu could use the setup information that I
provided earlier to fill in this section. I imagine that I would have
been stuck with black & white output had my friend not been here.
Obviously, it would be even better if the PAL setting was suggested to
the user once they said which country they were from - I had to look it
up on Wikipedia.

[Bug 234691] [NEW] [Hardy] Links to ntfs folders do not work properly on reboot

2008-05-24 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I am using Ubuntu Hardy 8.04. I have a 70GB windows/ntfs partition on
this machine.

I click Places > 70 GB Volume. The drive icon appears on the desktop.
I navigate to the folder that I want a link to. I middle-click drag to

works as expected.

When I reboot, the 70 GB icon is no longer on my desktop and the icon
for the link is different. If I click the link, I get an error that the
link doesn't work and do I want to move it to the trash. Another window
appears over the top of this saying that it is trying to open and click
cancel to cancel. (One cannot actually click this window until the
first error is clicked (even though it is underneath.)

[Bug 260612] [NEW] [Intrepid-Alpha4] Eject hotkey breaks keyboard and menus

2008-08-23 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Apologies for not knowing the package.

I am using a fully-updated Intrepid Alpha 4. When I press Fn + F10
(Eject CD), the keyboard stops working and, when I click Applications,
Places or System, it is highlighted, but does not drop down. The
buttons still work, however, and I can click logout and log back in to
get everything working again.

Please let me know what further information I can give you to assist.

[Bug 315342] [NEW] [Regression][Intrepid] Laptop on AC thinks it is being connected and disconnected over and over

2009-01-08 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

My fiancée's laptop is using Intrepid on a Dell Inspiron 600m. Prior to
upgrading the machine, it was running Dapper (I think - it was a number
of releases behind) and worked as expected.

On battery, the machine works as expected. On AC, it constantly (maybe a
couple of times per minute, see log) switches from thinking that it is
on AC to on battery power. This causes the brightness to change and the
machine to click. Needless to say, I am not too popular with her.

Please find attached the output of the gnome-power-bugreport.sh script.
Also attached is a log of the machine just sitting doing nothing (aside
from changing brightness and clicking). The machine was on AC throughout
the log.

The machine worked correctly in Windows and in the previous version of
Ubuntu, so I don't think that there is any hardware issue.

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

I tried the laptop with my charger and it works fine. Using her charger

I use a laptop, so my computer is usually off until somebody wants to
use it. I think that the "Guest" account is a really good idea, but I
currently have to login to my account in order to let someone use it
(wait for it to login and then change the "user" through the user-
switcher). Not only does this take a while with the person sitting there
waiting, it makes it look as though you have something to hide! Added to
that, I prefer to remove the user-switcher from the panel as it takes up
space and I am the only user.

I think it would be great if there was a "Login as Guest" icon on the
main login screen. That way, I could just give my laptop to someone
(turned off), tell them to click the "Login as Guest" icon when it gets
to it and leave them to it - it would make using a Guest account easier
(which seems sensible) rather than an extra step.

[Bug 398702] [NEW] "Guest" access doesn't allow sharing without username/password

2009-07-13 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-share

I was trying to share a folder to another laptop in our house. I am safe
within a network, so was happy to allow anyone who could connect to my
network connect to the share. I right-clicked the folder, clicked share
this folder, set a share name and checked the "allow Guest access" box.
I then jumped on the other Ubuntu laptop and went into Places > Network.
I browsed to my share, double-clicked the share and it gave a "could not
mount volume" error.

I could access the share, but only if I clicked "Connect to Server" and
put in my username and password. Shouldn't the "allow Guest access" mean
that I don't need to do that?

(I did the same thing sharing a Windows folder to an Ubuntu machine and
it was much easier.)

[Bug 48992] Re: Totem-Gst cannot seek in file

2006-07-31 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Here is the output from Totem at debug=3.

Every time:
1) open file
2) drag the slider to a point (say, 20 mins)
3) I get a very short (less than a second) bit of sound and then silence while
the time continues to increase, at normal speed, as if the track is playing.

[Bug 54762] RFE: Handling of stitched images

2006-08-01 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

I own a Canon PowerShot A85 camera and am using f-spot on Dapper.

I have taken some photos in "Stitched" mode. This keeps a bit of the
previous picture on the screen so that one can take multiple photos that
line up into one long photo.

If I use the proprietary software in Windows, the following happens:
1) The photos are imported
2) The fact that I have taken photos in this mode is detected by the software
and I am taken into a "Stitching" programme. This may be done off filenames as
I cannot immediately see any tags about it.
3) The software automatically attempts to overlay the photos in the correct
places and produces a chain of photos.
4) A square is drawn around the photos to give the biggest possible connected
photo (when using this mode, one often slips up or down and this cuts off the
bits either side).

For most photos, this is all automatic and merely requires the user to
confirm things.

I would love to see this feature implemented in f-spot - it would give
the feature to all cameras, not just mine. I realise that it is a lot of
work and suggest that perhaps it could be done as follows:

1) Create a sub-programme to work with the photos manually. This would probably
need the ability to manually move the photos around and the ability to draw a
square to create one photo from them.
2) Create an option to select some photos and open the programme in (1). This
would mean that the user could manually select photos to be stitched and
somehow select "Stitch these Photos".
3) Try to automate the process of lining the photos up by matching similar
regions and the process of drawing a square around the combined picture.
4) Try to detect sets of stitched photos - this is likely camera specific. If
all the above is done, this could be implemented camera-by-camera with the
owners of unsupported cameras keeping to the manual method.
5) Perhaps a dialogue could be displayed after importing asking whether or not
the user would like to enter the stitching programme. The detected "sets" could
be displayed as a list of small pictures on one side.

[Bug 55637] Synaptic and Add/Remove should ask the user to enable popcon

2006-08-08 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

The Ubuntu Popularity contest is very useful to Ubuntu.

From: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SimplePopconParticipation
"[It is] used for such purposes as determining which packages to include on
Ubuntu CDs and sorting in package management UIs. However, choosing to
participate in this program is cumbersome and should be simplified. The more
users participate in this effort, the more useful the information is. However,
participation cannot be enabled by default for privacy reasons. Thus, we would
like to make it simple for the user to opt to participate."

The aim of popcon is to get a statistically unbiased representation of
package usage. The current method of enabling popcon
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PopularityContest), and proposed
methods (hiding it in the preferences of software sources), essentially
mean that popcon only gets data from advanced users. This skewness in
the data renders the results of far less use as the sample is biased.

In order to obtain more "clean" data, each (administrative) user should
have the same probability of enabling the application.

The logical method by which this aim could be achieved would be to ask
the user the first time that Synaptic or Add/Remove is started (unless
the user has already enabled it). This would ensure that only those with
admin rights would be asked, would ensure that the privacy implications
were properly explained but maximise the use of the project.

The message could read:
"Would you like to participate in the Ubuntu Popularity Contest?
The Ubuntu Popularity Contest is an easy way to assist the Ubuntu team. By
sending us information about what you have installed, we can ensure that we are
focusing on the programs that people use most! For more information, please

That makes a lot of sense. I too hate nag screens and people are
expecting to answer questions in an installer (and may have a more
experienced user with them). It also has a big advantage because it
would be asked regardless of which package manager Ubuntu settles on.

I assumed that it had tried, and failed, to install the proprietary

[Bug 15019] Re: Difficulty downgrading packages with dependencies

2006-07-05 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
This is quite an issue for me. I wanted to try the new libtheora and had
to manually upgrade the versions of libc6 etc.

smb no longer worked with the new versions of libc6 so I wanted to
return my system to what it used to be. I tried clicking on the package
and "Force Version"ing but that (as was mentioned) wants to remove
everything dependent on libc6 - even though they clearly work with the
standard Dapper version.

The way I worked around it was to download the deb from the Dapper repo
and manually installing with dpkg at the command line (gdebi won't let
you downgrade).

Perhaps a "Revert" option, to resync with the repo, could lessen the
impact of this bug.
