[Bug 203349] Re: Broken plural forms in KDE

2008-07-31 Thread Alexis
Me, I understand gordboy. For several months we have reported a bug bad
translations that seems important (several errors of translation into
several languages). We (the community) are ready to make corrections.
But nothing happens. There are no updates. No message of responsible
packages in question.

FOSS say working with the community. The community is there. Perhaps
inexperienced, but voluntary. What can be done?

What we expect to make the correction knowing that it can be done very
quickly?

[Bug 263128] Re: wrong display of "drawer-object" applet of panel in gnome without animation

2008-09-13 Thread alexis
Yes this is reproductible,
I do it again today

Procedure to reproduce the bug

-create a drawer applet on your top panel
-run gconf-editor
- disable animation on key :/apps/panel/toplevels/panel_0/enable_animations
or/and /apps/panel/toplevels/panel_1/enable_animations
(on my case i have two drawer object)
- then test the drawer object one time
it works fine the first time
- then test a second time
the drawer objet appears at the top left of my sceen

I noticed that reenable the animation on the same key just after just
bug more the drawer, it won't appear when cliking on it. Restart the X
server (Ctrl–Alt–Backspace) fix this issue.

I'm on gnome 2.22.3

My gnome-applet version is 2.22.2-0ubuntu2 (hardy update)

System dist-upgraded from Feisty when Gutsy went beta ; adept-updated
today.

Accelerated video was available under Feisty with fglrx driver. Upon
upgrade, xorg was automatically reverted to free "ati" driver and the
display is noticeably slow.

Attempting to reconfigure xorg (either manual edit or dpkg
--reconfigure) to fglrx : X server crashes with

(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:3:0:1) found
(EE) No devices detected.

Adding a Device section for that PCI BusID doesn't help.

With a clean xorg.conf (previous one removed, dpkg-reconfigure -phigh
xserver-xorg), default "ati" driver, the display works but repaints
(screen switch, greying when logging off, etc) are slow.

Running glxinfo with debug on shows:

[Bug 146900] Re: [gutsy][beta] Cannot get accelerated video, radeon 9200

2007-09-30 Thread Alexis
Thanks for the quick update.

Yesterday night's adept update, which updated the xorg ati driver, had
no effect on the problem.

Double-checked as per the instructions, fglrx package was removed ; but
just to be sure, I did the following : aptitude remove --purge on the
flgrx driver, then aptitude remove on libgl1-mesa-dri|glx.

This installed the -swx11 packages, confirmed by glxinfo reporting
client and vendor string to "Brian Paul".

Redid an aptitude install libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri, dpkg-
reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg and ctrl-alt-BS. Same as before,
undefined symbol in r200_dri.so.

If it helps, ls -l /usr/lib/dri :
(...list up to Matrox driver)
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2384680 2007-08-17 00:44 r128_dri.so

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2436008 2007-08-17 00:44 radeon_dri.so
(list from S3 driver...)

Please let me know of any additional info I could provide.

[Bug 146900] Re: [gutsy][beta] Cannot get accelerated video, radeon 9200

2007-10-01 Thread Alexis
The swx packages were only installed temporarily (to satisfy
dependecies) while the mesa ones had been removed (from aptitude) just
to be sure everything was cleaned up.

Apt-get reinstall on libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri hasn't solved the
problem.

To be on the safe side, I tried apt-get removing libgl1-mesa-dri, which
also took X, KDE and xfce4 down, then reinstalling kubuntu-desktop
letting apt-get handle the details... problem is still there.

I've downloaded the beta CD and booted off it to confirm that I *do*
have DRI when running the liveCD.

I also have triple-checked that I don't have any fglrx-related package
in the way. Everything reports uninstalled from apt-get, and confirmed
by comparing dpkg -L and actual filesystem that no binary was left
behind.

dpkg -S libGL output (after complete takedown and reinstall of X and
mesa-dri) :

libgl1-mesa-glx: /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
ia32-libs: /usr/lib32/libGLU.so.1.3.070001
libglu1-mesa: /usr/lib/libGLU.so.1.3.070001
ia32-libs: /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1
ia32-libs: /usr/lib32/libGLU.so.1
libgl1-mesa-glx: /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2
googleearth: /usr/lib/googleearth/libGLU.so.1
ia32-libs: /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1.2
xserver-xorg-core: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so
libglu1-mesa: /usr/lib/libGLU.so.1

Right now backing up prior to a complete reinstall from liveCD...

Re: [Bug 146900] Re: [gutsy][beta] Cannot get accelerated video, radeon 9200

2007-10-02 Thread Alexis
It is required to run 32-bit apps on 64-bits systems. VMWare for
instance, or the Macromedia Flash plugin. It does provide the
lib32/dri/* drivers which I guess would be needed by a 32-bit version
of Xorg / libGL.

Since I'm running a 64-bit system, libGL complains that
/usr/lib32/r200_dri.so is 32-bit (per my first message), as expected.
The 64-bit /usr/lib/dri/r200_dri.so is provided by libgl1-mesa-dri
(64-bit pkg).

Now if I understand correctly the debug info above, libGL complains
about r200_dri.so while attempting to load it. The only "libGL" that I
could find is libGL.so.1 which is provided either by xorg-driver-fglrx
(removed and purged) *or* libgl1-mesa-glx (reinstalled several times).
Looks like they're not in sync but I can't see how that happens.

Anyway, I'll be away from that machine for a couple of weeks, and
everything is backed up. I still have tomorrow to look into this,
otherwise I'll probably just do a CD reinstall when I get back. Gutsy
will be final by then.

Ah, we might be on to something here. Aside from archives, packages
and other out-of-the-way stuff, found these :

/lib/linux-restricted-modules/2.6.20-16-generic/fglrx/fglrx.mod.o

looks like something was *not* cleaned up correctly ; and considering
the kernel version above, this looks like the feisty fglrx wasn't
zapped when upgrading to gutsy. Still weird since nothing should be
calling them, but they're here.
(...)
Removing them manually didn't help. I'm still getting the same error in glxinfo.

Did that every time. As far as these old fglrx (2.6.20-related) were
concerned, I had to remove them by hand since apt saw the packages as
"not installed" in the first place. I used --purge on every removal
mentioned previously.

Let's just drop it for now. As I mentioned previously, I'll be away
for a while, and I don't mind reinstalling fresh (actually should
clean up some cruft anyway...) when I get back.

Thanks for your time, efforts and help.

[Bug 205884] Re: mouse over an *.avi video file and konqueror crashes

2008-04-24 Thread Alexis
The problem come from the "sound overview" of the video file (when i put
my mouse over). To evit that konqueror hang out, i've just disable
"sound preview" (and i can keep "video overview", in Edition menu)...
(but now, i cannot use mouse over to listen music file's exact)..

(sorry for my poor english. Maybe "sound overview" is not the exact term
but my kubuntu is not in english)

[Bug 203349] Re: [Hardy] broken translation in amarok

2008-04-25 Thread Alexis
Same problem in French translation. Is not a missing in Amarok's kde
translation, but in Kubuntu, package only.

See this repport I made on Kde bug trackeing system:

http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=161257

But now.. the "LTS" version is released without needed corrections...

Others french mistranslation I saw:
- in the contextual menu, the third tab is translated as "Artist" (but in
french is "Artiste" (with a "e")
- idem in the playlist columns: "Artist" is not correctly translated (fr:
Artiste)
- When you click over a song in the playlist, "manage files" > "Organise file"
/ "Delete file". "Delete file" isn't translated (by "Supprimer ce fichier").

Notes: using Amarok 1.4.9.1

[Bug 164213] need-packaging burnstation

2007-11-20 Thread Alexis
Public bug reported:

Hi!

The "Burnstation" concept and the burnstation programs seems to be a
great project to share free contents and to transform a computer in a
powerful "station" to create compilations of medias, burning it, and
share it, etc...

This project is not new, but there doesn't exist yet an easy way to
install it on Ubuntu.

There exists a debian depository but it can't work with ubuntu (bad depencies i
guess).
(deb http://burnstation.org/debian/ sarge main)

The only way is to create packages for ubuntu from de subversion depository of
the burnstation projet.
Check this: http://tiki.burnstation.org/tiki-index.php?page=Burnstation.deb&bl

This would be a great opportunity to join free culture projects with
ubuntu and free software?

Could someone create the long-awaited deposits or include the deb in univers or
multiverse depository (if it is possible)?
It will be very nice! ;)

[Bug 436599] [NEW] system monitor search glitch

2009-09-25 Thread alexis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

This is a UI glitch, not a bug: The program behaves correctly, but can
be confusing.

In the Processes window, typing any text initiates a text search for
this text. If I try to initiate a search with a slash (/), as in various
viewers and some versions of top, I get a search control but the search
text is initialized with a slash... so it doesn't match what I meant to
search for. It would be nice to special-case this so that typing a slash
opens a search control with nothing in it.

inconsistences and I stopped it.
Thank you for your help.

[Bug 1577213] Re: qtcreator freezes and crashes all the time

2016-10-24 Thread Alexis
Experiencing the same things on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS or OpenSuse Leap 42.1.
I'm only working on CMake projects. I'm not using boost but I do have a
lot of project dependencies. QtCreator just freezes for 30 seconds to a
minute whenever it looks for autocompletion, I'm copying a variable, or
Ctrl+clicking on one. It is making it unusable as a IDE. It doesn't seem
to crash though.

[Bug 1415422] [NEW] Only runs as root, but should run as nonpriv user

2015-01-28 Thread Alexis
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

As packaged, this daemon runs as root. There is no reason for this - all
it needs is access to printer devices, a pidfile, and a lockfile.
Instead, it should run as user "lp", which will give it access to the
printer devices. As for the pidfile and lockfile, they are easily
handled in the init.d script (though a one-line patch to the source
could improve things minimally by removing the need to pre-touch the
pidfile). I've attached a patch that does this, also allowing the user
to choose a different user (even root) in /etc/defaults/p910nd.

The man page could stand some customization but it's no worse with the
patch than without.

Since this involves a daemon that takes input from the network and that
runs as root (until my patch), I'm marking this as a security
vulnerability. Apologies in advance if that's the wrong choice- this is
my first ubuntu submission.

This patch also includes a drive-by fix of a tiny bug: the pidfile
always has the same name. It shouldn't, as by design this daemon can run
multiple times, once per printer, and the pidfile name is supposed to
reflect the printer instance.

This is for version 0.95-1 in 14.04.1; porting up to the current version
should be trivial, if not a clean patch.

Behavior is changed (daemon no longer runs as root) but this should be
invisible to users. If you want to leave behavior as-is (which I think
is a bad idea) then you can just change the default user back to root in
/etc/default/p910nd, which will let those who want to run as lp by
editing that file.

** Affects: p910nd (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Patch added: "patch to /etc/init.d/p910nd to run as user lp (or other
nonroot)"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1415422/+attachment/4307153/+files/p910nd.diff

** Information type changed from Private Security to Public Security

[Bug 1171099] Re: kubuntu - plymouth not shown

2013-05-06 Thread Alexis
I follow your advice, Scott. To fixe that bug i've reinstalled my OS (great
logic).
On the bootable key and after the install, on the first boot, plymouth was ok.

But on my system, KDE and all the system totaly freeze with the free
graphic driver.

On rescue mode, i've installed nvidia-current (304) to be able to use
kde.

After that, plymouth was again buggy, just like before. But, finaly, i
found a way to fix that using superbootmanager
(http://www.sourceslist.eu/projects/super-boot-manager/).
Superbootmanager/plymouthmanager has an option to fix plymouth issues
with non-free graphic driver. And THAT fixed that bug.

Thank you for your great help .
Thank you encourage people to try the beta release and report bugs.

[Bug 708151] Re: can't log in to KDE after upgrading to 4.6

2011-02-01 Thread Alexis
I got this issue too upgrading Kubuntu 10.10 with KDE 4.6 from PPA's
backport: black screen, x errors,...

I tried a lot of thing to understand the origin of the problem (error
message was not very usefull).

The problem was linked to the new kdm theme. It was triying to use
ethais (previous defaut KDM theme). Ethais folder and background .png
seems exists but are corrupted files
(/usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/ethais). All needed part of ethais are
not in the folder (and are, in this state, in the last 4.6 kde package
of KDM -purge and reinstal kdm package dont change anything)...

To use the new 4.6 kdm theme, i changed manualy "ethais" to "horos" in
/etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc

After that, and rebooting kdm worked fine...

(similar issue about kdm: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/kdebase-workspace/+bug/517803)

(In my configuration -nvidia chipset-, i also edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to
charge the "nouveau" module...)

[Bug 2067180] [NEW] inability to enter certain craters in passwords when logging in.

2024-05-25 Thread Alexis
Public bug reported:

After starting Ubuntu, I wanted to connect to my account (let's say my password

But it's impossible to enter the character ö (this also applies to
craters with ^: ê, â, ô, ...) instead of my password I have : Oppo1568 .
(Please note that this is not a keyboard configuration problem. The
problem of no longer being able to type the characters: ê, â, ô, ö, ë ,
ä, ... arrived with the Ubuntu update 24.04.

Re: [Bug 218760] Re: [regression] Dock with USB devices + suspend == resume fails

2008-07-28 Thread David Alexis
I'm sorry, but this is a little ridiculous. I read that thread, and this
guy, Alan Stern, is saying that nobody else is reporting this problem?? Has
he done the slightest bit of research into the issue?

I've been a developer for 19 years and I've seen this too many times. I'm
sorry, but its laziness on the developer's part. Everyone in the known
universe using Ubuntu is having this issue. People have supplied debugging
info over and over again. All it takes just a little initiative on the
developer(s) responsible for this code to run their own test. I get the
problem with *every* USB hub I try! Reproducing this would be as hard as
shooting fish in a barrel.

Re: [Bug 218760] Re: [regression] Dock with USB devices + suspend == resume fails

2008-08-27 Thread David Alexis
I got riled up about Dave Abrahams saying that the linux-usb developers
wanted console debug info and pointed to a thread where the bug triage guy
was saying that nobody is reporting this issue. I was told to take a chill
pill, and that I can't expect the kernel devs to test Ubuntu-specific
issues.

Well, I tested this with OpenSuse 11 and guess what? Same issue! I can do
the developer's work for them and test on yet another distro, but I think I
know what the outcome will be. Sorry, this does not seem to be Ubuntu
specific. The bug reporting system is broken.

But on to something more constructive. I did yet more testing and by
removing the bluetooth kernel module as well as some others like some
Acer-specific USB module that kept loading, I finally got it to the point
where suspend/resume worked with the USB hub attached with my wireless mouse
dongle plugged into it. I did a few suspend/resume cycles to make sure it
was consistent. Then I plugged my keyboard into the USB hub and suspended.
This hosed USB on resume.

Re: [Bug 218760] Re: [regression] Dock with USB devices + suspend == resume fails

2008-08-28 Thread David Alexis
Daniel, it's possible that what I'm seeing could be a different bug, but
based on my experience I would say its the same bug but that a dock triggers
slightly different/extra symptoms. The issue I'm seeing is reported by
others in the same threads as your total lockup issue.

I did experience the total lockup recently when I was attempting to get a
Pinnacle USB TV tuner working. As soon as I plug it in I get total lockup,
with the only way out being the "alt-sysrq" trick.

In any case, again, this could not be Ubuntu specific because I reproduced
it with Suse.

[Bug 371536] [NEW] "at" cannot open .SEQ file

2009-05-04 Thread Alexis Wilke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: at

When testing the "at" command in a console, I got this after upgrading
to Intrepid:

Cannot open lockfile /var/spool/cron/atjobs/.SEQ: Permission denied

The /var/spool/cron permissions are as expected (see
/var/lib/dpkg/info/at.postinst for more info).

However, when I checked out the /usr/bin/at command, it was missing the
u+s permission. Is that intended? If so, should the .SEQ be g+rw too? At
this time it is -rw--- (u+rw only).

By doing this:

chmod u+s /usr/bin/at

it fixed my problem, but it feels wrong if the security could prevent
the user setuid...

On the other hand, it was that way in older systems (8.04 still has the
u+s flag turned on.)

Thank you.
Alexis Wilke

P.S. There is the version, and also I tried an "apt-get install
--reinstall at" to see whether the permissions would be magically fixed
and nothing was changed...

Guys, you can't believe how happy I am with Intrepid. It feels very solid
and the display looks sharper too. But best of all, I'm now able to fully
trust the suspend/resume! I've tried all the previously failing scenarios
and more, and it works every time. Battery like is much better also.

I'll be glad to do any specific testing you need. I'll test it on all the

[Bug 218760] Re: [regression] Dock with USB devices + suspend == resume fails

2008-07-21 Thread David Alexis
I'm using a Dell m1330 (4GB ram, nvidia graphics, Dell wireless module)
and I'm seen this problem initially with 64-bit Hardy. After trying
everything suggested on the net, I installed 32-bit Hardy, and I'm
having the exact same symptoms. I don't have a dock, but I'm using a
USB hub that I have a keyboard and mouse plugged into.

I did some testing of different scenarios - different keyboards and
mice, and different USB hubs - and can reproduce the problem very
reliably. If I have any devices directly plugged into any or both of
the machine's USB ports, suspend/resume work nicely (as far as USB goes
anyway).

However, if I have any USB hub attached, when I suspend, USB does not
work on resume. A previous poster mentioned that his issue did not
occur if he resumed without the dock that was attached at suspend time.
This does not work for me. As long as a hub is attached at suspend
time, USB is hosed on resume.

I notice that the output of dmesg shows "USB disconnect" during resume
(see below). This is consistent every time USB gets hosed on resume.

[2.602386] ata1: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)
[2.605252] ata1.00: configured for UDMA/133
[2.606852] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] 390721968 512-byte hardware sectors (200050 MB)

[2.606910] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00
[2.606982] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled,
doesn't support DPO or FUA
[2.613191] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Starting disk
[2.680851] PM: Finishing wakeup.
[2.680854] Restarting tasks ... <6>usb 5-1: USB disconnect, address 7
[2.768433] done.
[2.837317] usb 7-2: USB disconnect, address 18
[2.837322] usb 7-2.1: USB disconnect, address 19
[2.965299] usb 7-2.2: USB disconnect, address

And here's something interesting... after a hosed resume, issuing the
lsusb command totally locks up the console!

I'm not a kernel developer so I can't pinpoint this, but something in
the USB code hates USB hubs.

[Bug 221112] Re: Can't use space bar in search bar when using french alternative keyboard

2008-08-29 Thread Alexis Bauchu
For the moment, the problem is solved by switching to "France (Legacy)
Alternative", but I haven't tried to reboot the system nor X11.

Rhythmbox is the first program to show this problem (for example Firefox
+ Ubiquity works pretty fine as "space" and "ctrl+space" are handled
differently).

Re: [Bug 218760] Re: [regression] Dock with USB devices + suspend == resume fails

2008-08-30 Thread David Alexis
I installed the 2.6.27.2-generic kernel on Linux Mint 5 I my results are
similar to Daniel's. This is with OR without the USB hub and devices
plugged in. On resume, the screen is blank and it looks like the machine
locked up. But in fact, the OS is active. I had to fly blind, but I did a
ctl-F2, logged in blind, then issued a "sudo shutdown -r now" command.

So, except for the blank video, its an improvement since USB isn't
hosed. :)
