[Bug 2051239] Re: [25.04 FEAT] [VS1807] KVM: Full boot order support - libvirt part

2025-02-27 Thread Frank Heimes
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

   * KVM virtual machines do not currently attempt booting from multiple
targets, as defined by the targets' boot order properties.

   * Therefore, users cannot utilize existing management frameworks to
control their boot order on CCW devices for multi device boot.

   * This SRU backports and utilizes the "virtio-ccw.loadparm" QEMU
capabilities detection, so that if the QEMU version (detected at
runtime) supports multi boot device, it makes use of it instead of using
the single boot device machine parameter.

  [ Test Plan ]

   * Testing needs a specialized setup with virtualized CCW devices on s390x,
an IBM z13 or LinuxONE system, running noble or newer.

   * The original bug reporter is supposed to help on the verification.

[ Where problems could occur ]

   * This change touches the QEMU feature-flag/capabilities detection (for
QEMU_CAPS_VIRTIO_CCW_DEVICE_LOADPARM). It is mostly isolated to
virtualized s390x CCW devices, but if anything goes wrong, it could
affect the overall capabilities detection of libvirt, leading to invalid
control commands being generated for QEMU and therefore a change in
  behavior.

+ * For the potential change in behavior, please also see [ Other Info ],
+'s390x KVM: Full Boot Order considerations' details.
+
  [ Other Info ]

   * This enablement work is targeted to virtualized CCW devices on s390x

   * QEMU part of this enablement work is tracked in bug #2049698

- --- Original bug report ---
+ * s390x KVM: Full Boot Order considerations
+
+I want to leave some more details and explanation about a potential risk
+due to a potential change in behavior
+(thanks to Boris F. for the discussion - here is the summary):
+
+There is already a "boot order" before this 'full boot order patch set'
+that is in discussion here, but so far libvirt handed over only the first
+device of the boot order as boot device to qemu.
+Since this is a known limitation to qemu on s390x users, there is usually
+just only one device specified in the boot order (aka list) - on s390x.
+Means a guest boots from the first (and usually only) boot device,
+or it does not boot at all.
+
+But one could define one or more devices in the domain XML - also on s390x,
+but this didn't change anything - the boot device was always the first one.
+
+Let’s go into some more details and distinguish the following two cases,
+where multiple boot devices are configured (which again is unlikely,
+since this was not supported, didn't work, hence wouldn’t change anything,
+but nevertheless let us play it through to consider the regression risk
+for this change):
+1) the first device is bootable
+2) the first device is NOT bootable
+This leads to the following results with and without the
+full boot order patch set:
+1)
+ a) without patch set: guest starts from first device
+ b) with patch set: guest starts from first device
+2)
+ a) without patch set: guest does not start at all as the first device
fails
+ b) with patch set: guest does not start from first device
+ AND an attempt is made to boot from the next device in the boot order
+So there is a potential change in behavior in case 2) b).
+
+But if a system is configured today, it is obviously configured to work,
+that usually means it has only one bootable device - or in case it has
+multiple ones (which is unlikely, since it was never supported),
+the first one will be bootable.
+
+So case 1) can strongly be assumed.
+
+Case 2) can be considered as an extreme (and useless) edge case, since:
+i) a user would need to have a guest configured with a device that it
+ cannot boot from (which provides no function and with that no value)
+ii) a user would need to have multiple devices configured in the boot order
+and one other than the first one is bootable (which was not supported
+until now and never work)
+And only if both cases (i) and ii)) would apply,
+a change in the behavior would be noticeable.
+
+ - Original bug report -

Allow KVM virtual machines to attempt booting from multiple targets, as
defined by the targets' boot order properties.
Customers will benefit from simplified installation, and can reuse existing
management frameworks.

(This is the libvirt part of the feature)

Install using today's DAILY

which MANIFEST says includes

calamares-settings-lubuntu 1:25.04.16

and OFFLINE install to
- sony vaio ultrabook svp11216cgb (i5-9400u, 4gb, intel haswell-ULT)

fails with `apt install` command as before when offline install used
on reboot the install does NOT boot; firmware reports no OS to boot

(I hadn't noticed the FIX RELEASED for this bug report; had I have done
that I'd have spent more time ensuring the error is identical to prior
test; eg. comment #7, but a quick scan and it looked identical so I just
rebooted & tested the install & failure to boot... I can re-test if
required (alas not today))

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Install Ubuntu 24.04 on a Thinkad P14s series laptop (tested with 21J5,
21K5 and 21K3)
  2. Start an access point such as the hotspot from a phone
  3. Connect to the access point with `nmcli d wifi connect "" password

it is owned by gdm, and I can confirm it is a regression compared to
*u4.1 as in *u4.1 it does not happen if /tmp/.X11-unix is owned by gdm.

We're missing something different in our set ups then because exact same
procedure gives different results... I'm testing in a virtual machine.

After 'systemctl stop gdm; rm -r /tmp/.X11-unix; systemctl start gdm':

  File: /tmp/.X11-unix/
Size: 80 Blocks: 0 IO Block: 4096 directory
Device: 0,32Inode: 276 Links: 2
Access: (1777/drwxrwxrwt) Uid: ( 120/ gdm) Gid: ( 122/ gdm)

 Birth: 2025-02-27 08:35:02.481540724 +0100

After logging in, same thing.

By the way, I don't see

> "Failed to start X Wayland: Wrong ownership for directory
"/tmp/.X11-unix": 120.#012Ownership of "/tmp": 0.#012Current user:
1000."

in your 4.2 log, but I see

> (gnome-shell:9421): libmutter-ERROR **: 14:57:37.313: Failed to start
X Wayland: Directory "/tmp/.X11-unix" is not writable

in your 4.1 log, so looks like it's not the same failure Gre0 saw.

> Should we move this to verification-failed?

I think it is the safest to do.

[Bug 2099980] Re: Wi-Fi connection drops periodically on Ubuntu 24.04.02

2025-02-27 Thread Andreas Just Poulsen
** Tags added: apport-collected noble

** Description changed:

Connection to a an access point drops every 15 seconds or so on fresh
installs of Ubuntu 24.04.02 on several machines in the Thinkpad P14s
series. This problem did not occur on fresh installs of Ubuntu 20.04
  with exact same hardware.

""
  4. Start pinging the gateway, shortly after, the connection drops. This looks
like so:

  64 bytes from 192.168.12.1: icmp_seq=15 ttl=64 time=5.81 ms
  64 bytes from 192.168.12.1: icmp_seq=16 ttl=64 time=7.48 ms
  64 bytes from 192.168.12.1: icmp_seq=17 ttl=64 time=7.96 ms
From 192.168.12.202 icmp_seq=18 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.12.202 icmp_seq=19 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.12.202 icmp_seq=20 Destination Host Unreachable

  5. The connection is restored and the ping continues

2025-02-27 Thread You-Sheng Yang
There is no more linux-headers of version 5.15.0-43.46-generic
available, use -72 for testing instead.

So this should have been fixed by bug 2069582, but it did not notice
that it's also affecting outdated kernel headers versions. The problem
should have gone away since -93, and the latest -135 is also healthy.

[Bug 2098413] Re: [SRU] Intel Battlemage cards lack hardware encode support

2025-02-27 Thread Shane McKee
> Since this is hardware specific, what matrix of hardware are you
intending to test? For example, if using ffmpeg, then are you testing
both with and without the relevant hardware to ensure that behaviour for
those without this hardware is not regressed?

My current hardware testing is on TGL, ADL, RPL, LNL, and BMG. So I do
test a few generations back as well as on the hardware specifically
being enabled. If you're talking about testing on a whole other vendor,
I would say that this would not be a useful test because the tests were
only developed with Intel's media stack in mind. The other vendor would
have had to implement everything exactly the same, down to libva trace
log formatting.

> I think that's fine, but then it should be part of the documented test
plan as to how to validate that there are no test regressions please.

Sure. I just run the tests on the old package versions, upgrade only the
packages being tested, and re-run the tests. Then I look at each failure
to make sure that it was not passing on the old (current) version.

ACK on the rest, thanks for the explanation. I'll re-run the tests again
once the packages (hopefully) get submitted to proposed.

2025-02-27 Thread You-Sheng Yang
1. v6.2 commit f571faf6e443b ("timers: Provide timer_shutdown[_sync]()")
was not backported to any stable trees, but it may be picked due to CVE
or other reasons to oem-6.1 and generic-5.15. This, while no fixed
kernel patch level for reference, can still be resolved via the
configure mechanism proposed in bug 2095138.

2. The wrapped APIs, del_timer[_sync](), may also be renamed by also
v6.2 commit bb663f0f3c396 ("timers: Rename del_timer() to
timer_delete()"), which was backported to v6.1.84, v5.15.154, v5.10.215,
and v5.4.274.

[Bug 2099980] Re: Wi-Fi connection drops periodically on Ubuntu 24.04.02

2025-02-27 Thread Andreas Just Poulsen
I accidentally cancelled the apport-collect, so I ran it again, excuse
the spam of files.

I forgot to mention that bug is very sporadic, and there are long
periods of time where this does not happen and periods of time where
this happens every 15 seconds. When I took the apport it had just
occurred once

[Bug 2100478] [NEW] Changing theme to Breeze does not update snaps connections

2025-02-27 Thread Nathan Teodosio
Public bug reported:

In Kubuntu 24.10 I open systemsettings and in Color & Themes -> Global
Theme choose Breeze, check all boxes and apply, these are Firefox
content connections:

content[gnome-42-2204] firefox:gnome-42-2204
gnome-42-2204:gnome-42-2204 -
content[gtk-3-themes] firefox:gtk-3-themes
gtk-common-themes:gtk-3-themes -
content[icon-themes]firefox:icon-themes
gtk-common-themes:icon-themes -
content[sound-themes] firefox:sound-themes
gtk-common-themes:sound-themes -

A user[1] has noticed that by reconnecting the icon-theme to the breeze-
icon-theme snap fixes the mismatched mouse cursor in Firefox, so should
systemsettings or snapd-desktop-integration make sure this happens? In
Gnome side this is the case.

2025-02-27 Thread Roland Giesler
Public bug reported:

This bug occurs with both X11 and Wayland. I currently have Wayland
enabled, so I'll file from that perspective.

Symptom: When the system recovers from having it's screens blanked, the

the monitor down and back up again, it's recovers the correct settings.

Monitors: 3

 1: +DP-1 1440/410x900/260+0+0 DP-1
 2: +eDP-1 1536/310x864/170+2880+36 eDP-1

0 is a Dell 19"
1 is a Benq 19"
2 is the builtin laptop monitor

The are physically arranged from left to right: 1, 0, 2

I have screen blanking set to 15 minutes.

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:131.0)

Steps to reproduce:

Set up a new installation of Kubuntu, which comes with the snap version
of Firefox preloaded. Applied the "Breeze" theme in system settings.

Actual results:

Firefox, and only Firefox, continues to use the default theme for mouse
cursors and minimise/maximise/close buttons.

There is some discussion of this issue and a partial solution here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/1g2x6b4/firefox_snap_falling_back_to_aidwata_cursor_theme/

Running sudo snap connect firefox:icon-themes icon-theme-breeze solved
the cursor issue, but window management buttons remain unthemed.

Expected results:

Firefox should respect GUI themes like other applications.

As unfortunately Gnome is the default Ubuntu desktop, that makes sense.
I do not think there is a way for Snap to connect to different theme
related snaps depending on the desktop in use, but I'll ask around.

> Firefox, and only Firefox, continues to use the default theme for

That is not really true, any snap will continue to use the default theme
for mouse cursors. As for the window buttons, that only happens if
Firefox is set to take over the title bar, which you can disable by
clicking with the right mouse button in the title bar, then choosing
"customize toolbar" and selecting the "title bar" check-box.

If I understand correctly, the behavior with the title bar un-checked is
dictated by the client side decorations, abbreviated CSD, and then
that's on Firefox. I reckon since Firefox is built with GTK it uses
Gnome's CSD and that's why the window buttons in that case won't match
your system's. (On the other hand does that mean that every program have
to choose what CSD style it will use? That can't be right, I'll ask
around too.)

[Bug 2100483] [NEW] amdgpu.ids path is fixed

2025-02-27 Thread Sergio Costas
Public bug reported:

The AMD driver expects the file `amdgpu.ids` in a fixed place
(/usr/share/libdrm); this means that, when building a Snap application, the
amdgpu.ids file isn't directly available there, but inside a mounted folder.
This forces either each application, or each extension snap (gnome-extension,
mesa-2404...) to link/bind the file from the current place (usually at
$SNAP/gnome-platform/usr/share/libdrm/amdgpu.ids)
into the original path. The problem is that, currently, it fails, and the file
isn't being binded, no matter the correct statement is specified in the snap.

There is a patch for libdrm that allows to set an environment variable,
called AMDGPU_ASIC_ID_TABLE_PATH, where the file will be searched for
instead of the default, meson-configured, path. Unfortunately, it still
hasn't been merged. But applying it into the .deb packages would allow
to fix this problem, and with the extra advantage or reducing the number
of binded files/folders in the snaps (each bind consumes resources, and
in fact, snapd limits the number of binds that a snap can do, so being
able to use an environment variable for this would allow to save one).

The patch: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/drm/-/merge_requests/273

[Bug 2072561] Re: [MIR] rust-hwlib

2025-02-27 Thread Lukas Märdian
Review for Source Package: rust-hwlib

[Summary]
This Rust binary ("hwctl") queries the https://hw.ubuntu.com endpoint for
specific
CPU and hardware info, to check if the system runs on a certified device. It's
an Ubuntu/Canonical only solution. The output is structured JSON data, to be
consumed by "Ubuntu Pro". It's actively maintained in upstream/GitHub, but not
yet packaged in the archives. The Rust application code itself is fairly small
(~1k LoC), but comes with a huge pile of vendored crates (~1M LoC).

MIR team ACK under the constraint to resolve the below listed
required TODOs and as much as possible having a look at the
recommended TODOs.

This does need a security review, so I'll assign ubuntu-security

List of specific binary packages to be promoted to main: hwctl
Specific binary packages built, but NOT to be promoted to main:

Notes:
#0 - Flagging for security review, due to parsing of system/device data and
parsing of HTTP responses from a centralized (trusted?) endpoint,
hw.ubuntu.com which can easily be modified at runtime via HW_API_URL

Required TODOs:
#1 - The binary is expected to run as root, but only needs access to specific
system data. Consider adding an apparmor profile for restricting it to the
mandatory data access. (I'm unclear about this, could potentially be
 downgraded to a Recommended TODO.)
#2 - The autopkgtests is just a re-execution of the unit tests, including
re-compile, so not testing the actual, installed binaries. Adding a simple
integration tests, using a mock HTTP server to simulate hw.ubuntu.com and
make a test request using the real binary would be very valuable.
#3 - Please explain the release (upstream) release process, I see "Revision XXX"
as releases on GitHub, but this package (the hwlib client) uses versions
like v0.9.0 which are not referenced upstream.
#4 - Please explain the arch:amd64 limitation. I see arm64/rpi4b8g in test data
but the package is not built for arm64 or any other arch besides amd64.
Doesn't the Pro client need the data for devices of any architecture?

Recommended TODOs:
#5 - The package should get a team bug subscriber before being promoted
#6 - d/vendor-rust.sh: Consider using "cargo vendor-filterer" with the following
arguments "--platform '*-*-linux-gnu' --platform '*-*-linux-gnueabi'" to
 avoid unnecessary windows crates
#7 - d/rules: Consider using a VENDOR_TARBALL for crates, see "vendor-tarball"
 target in this example makefile:

https://github.com/canonical/ubuntu-mir/blob/main/vendoring/Rust.md#automation-via-debianrules
#8 - Consider fixing some lintian warnings, especially those (see below for more
 warnings and details):
W: hwctl: synopsis-too-long
I: rust-hwlib source: override_dh_auto_test-does-not-check-DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS
[debian/rules:28]
P: rust-hwlib source: uses-debhelper-compat-file [debian/compat]

#9 - Consider fixing some build-time warnings, especially this one (see below
 for more warnings and details):
warning: use of deprecated method `std::error::Error::description`: use the
Display impl or to_string()

[Rationale, Duplication and Ownership]
- There is no other package in main providing the same functionality.
=> Custom Canonical solution for checking hardware certification status.
- A team is committed to own long term maintenance of this package.
  => ~canonical-hw-cert
- The rationale given in the report seems valid and useful for Ubuntu.

[Dependencies]
OK:
- no other Dependencies to MIR due to this
  - SRCPKG checked with `check-mir`
  - all dependencies can be found in `seeded-in-ubuntu` (already in main)
  - none of the (potentially auto-generated) dependencies (Depends
and Recommends) that are present after build are not in main
 - no -dev/-debug/-doc packages that need exclusion
- No dependencies in main that are only superficially tested requiring
  more tests now.

Problems: None

[Embedded sources and static linking]
OK:
- not a go package, no extra constraints to consider in that regard
- does not have unexpected Built-Using entries
- Rust package that has all dependencies vendored. It does neither
have *Built-Using (after build). Nor does the build log indicate
built-in sources that are missed to be reported as Built-Using.
- rust package using dh_cargo (dh ... --buildsystem cargo)
- Includes vendored code, the package has documented how to refresh this
  code at ./README.md

Problems:
- embedded source present (vendored Rust dependencies)
- Rust, using static linking of the final binary

[Security]
OK:
- history of CVEs does not look concerning (new application, Jan 2024)
- does not run a daemon as root
- does not use webkit1,2 (references in
rust-vendor/vcpkg/../boost-build_1.67.0_x64-windows.list)
- does not use lib*v8 directly
- does not process arbitrary web content
- does not integrate arbitrary javascript into the desktop
- does not deal with system authentication (eg, pam), etc)
- does not

[Bug 2072561] Re: [MIR] rust-hwlib

2025-02-27 Thread Lukas Märdian
I'm already assigning this to ~ubuntu-security for review. The
outstanding TODOs should not affect the security review (except adding
of an apparmor profile, which would only improve their verdict).

[Bug 2099811] Re: Segmentation fault if multiple Ubuntu on same PC

2025-02-27 Thread Skia
Even without another Ubuntu installed on the same machine, I also get
some segfaults when running os-prober on Plucky:

root@kiffex:/home/skia# os-prober
device-mapper: version ioctl on failed: Permission denied
Incompatible libdevmapper 1.02.201 (2024-10-02) and kernel driver (unknown
version).
Segmentation fault

Tagging this for Foundations to investigate, since this seems to be a
regression in plucky: everything works fine in an Oracular VM, but the
segfault reproduces in an up-to-date Plucky VM.

[Bug 2072561] Re: [MIR] rust-hwlib

2025-02-27 Thread Lukas Märdian
For the autopkgtest in TODO #2 I'm considering something simple like:

Preparing a corresponding (static) JSON response file and serving it via
a simple web server:

$ python3 -m http.server

Then calling hwctl on that localhost mock server, querying a relevant
endpoint and comparing the hwctl output to the static JSON repsonse.

$ HW_API_URL="localhost:8000" hwctl

[Bug 2098413] Re: [SRU] Intel Battlemage cards lack hardware encode support

2025-02-27 Thread Zixing Liu
Hi Shane,

> libvpl_2.13.0_to_2.14.0.debdiff Edit (6.7 MiB, text/plain)

I think you accidentally mixed up the files from onevpl and libvpl.
Also, you can post a link to your PPA build if a package is not in the
archive.

> libvpl-tools-1.2.0_to_1.3.0.debdiff Edit (118.9 KiB, text/plain)

According to the SRU policy, the version number is incorrect. I suggest
using version "1.3.0-0ubuntu0.24.10.1".

> onevpl_intel_gpu_24.3.4_to_24.4.4.debdiff Edit (267.9 KiB, text/plain)

According to the SRU policy, the version number is incorrect. I suggest
using version "24.4.4-0ubuntu0.24.10.1".

After you address the issues, you can subscribe "ubuntu-sponsors" to
this bug for another review. Thanks!

[Bug 2097808] Re: IPv6 support for iBFT iSCSI boot

2025-02-27 Thread Andreas Hasenack
I note that the noble and oracular packages don't seem to be coming from
an apt repository, but a local installation:

 *** 2.1.9-3ubuntu5.3 100
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

 *** 2.1.10-1ubuntu1.1 100
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

That could be because the proposed entry from sources.list (or
ubuntu.sources) was removed after the package was installed, though, and
I'll assume that.

[Bug 1165536] Re: grep doesn't handle \w correctly

2025-02-27 Thread Skia
I think the usage of `grep` is a bit mistaken. `\w` is a literal
replacement for `[_[:alnum:]]`, and `\W` is for inverting that, so if
you enclose it again in some brackets, it doesn't work anymore. You
probably want something more like this:

❯ grep -Re '\Wlog\W' /tmp/test2
if ($this->_touchOnly) //log if touchOnly
only log the output of the controller if $silent
if (window.console) console.log(data);

*Summarising the discussion with ~slyon*

We filter out unnecessary vendored crates in the `Cargo.toml` file (see
https://github.com/canonical/hardware-
api/blob/main/client/Cargo.toml#L10), so vendor-filterer replaces
unreferenced packages with stub.

As ~slyon confirmed, we can consider #6 resolved.
