The Apple iMac models are desktop class computers so they don't contain
a battery. ;-)

But when I have access to an Intel laptop I will probably look again
into this.

[Bug 2058227] Re: Crash during upgrade from Mantic to Noble due to Python 3.12

2024-05-04 Thread Vitaliy Kanev
In reply to Comment #10

Apparently not. According to release notes [1], there are more critical
bugs blocking the Mantic to Noble upgrades. This include the libglib
transitional package with Y2038 handling [2] and Thunderbird DEB-to-Snap
conversion [3]

[Bug 2064791] [NEW] apparmor prevents kea launch

2024-05-04 Thread Philipp
Public bug reported:

Dear Sir or Madam,

during installation of kea-2.4 (kea-dhcp4, kea-dhcp6 and kea-ctrl-agent)
some profiles for apparmor are installed/created as well.

Unfortunately these profiles prevent kea services to start when for example
MySQL as backend is configured.
Config snippet from kea-dhcp4.conf:
  "hosts-database": {
"type": "mysql",
"name": "kea",
"user": "kea",
"password": "password",
"host": "",
"port": 3306
},

Error message from kea-dhcp4-server:
ERROR [kea-dhcp4.dhcp4.125444634970560] DHCP4_CONFIG_LOAD_FAIL configuration
error using file: /etc/kea/kea-dhcp4.conf, reason: Unable to open database:
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (13)
ERROR [kea-dhcp4.dhcp4.125444634970560] DHCP4_INIT_FAIL failed to initialize
Kea server: configuration error using file '/etc/kea/kea-dhcp4.conf': Unable to
open database: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (13)

Message from dmesg:
[ 685.201719] audit: type=1400 audit(1714811351.219:113): apparmor="DENIED"
operation="connect" class="file" info="Failed name lookup - disconnected path"
error=-13 profile="kea-dhcp4" name="run/mysqld/mysqld.sock" pid=2887
comm="kea-dhcp4" requested_mask="wr" denied_mask="wr" fsuid=111 ouid=110

As you can see, kea can't connect to mysql through the socket, since
apparmor is preventing it.

There is a similar issue with using the kea-ctrl-agent with the other
services.

In your installed apparmor profiles you specifically allow the socket
/run/kea/kea4-ctrl-socket
profile snippet:
  # Control sockets
  # Before LP: #1863100, these were in /tmp. For compatibility, let's keep both
  # locations
  owner /{tmp,run/kea}/kea4-ctrl-socket w,
  owner /{tmp,run/kea}/kea4-ctrl-socket.lock rwk,

Naming it anything else prevents the server to start as well.

It's really time-consuming and nerve racking to debug this, since the
issue with apparmor is not directly apparently.

[Bug 2063983] Re: 24.04 Upgrade/Fresh Install results in black screen on reboot on AMDGPU system

2024-05-04 Thread Iago Alonso Alonso
Hi,

I can confirm the same problem installing Kubuntu 24.04 with an AMD
Ryzen 9 6900HX and an AMD Radeon RX 6850M XT.

The only way I could see the login screen was to go into recovery mode,
try some options to see if it did anything and then hit continue to boot
the system.

Regards.

[Bug 2063952] Re: 22.04 to 23.10 upgrade fails, kubuntu-desktop is not installable.

2024-05-04 Thread Rik Mills
I can see from the logs that you must have packages from the backports-
extra PPA on your system, to get newest plasma 5.27. The packages in
that are backported from 24.04, so are newer than those found 23.10.
This is likely the source of most of the conflicts and refusal to
upgrade.

Re-enabling the backports PPA then removing it with ppa-purge may be a
solution to at least some of this. I would note that 22.04 to 23.10
upgrades is non standard and not a path that really gets tested.

[Bug 2056578] Re: Tor Browser - keyboard not functioning

2024-05-04 Thread Gafford Pearce
Just downloaded and installed Ubuntu 24.04 yesterday and had the issue with
keyboard not operating. I am brand new to Ubuntu/Linux and loving it so this is
for new folks who don't understand a lot. Step by step:
first: the torbrowser.Browser.firefox file is found in the
Ubuntu/etc/apparmor.d directory.
second: edit the file with a text editor and add the line in #10.

owner @{HOME}/.cache/ibus/dbus-* rw,

I added it after a bunch of other lines starting with owner @{HOME}...
third: Save the file.
Many thanks to AsciiWolf for the above solution, it works perfectly.

fourth: you must now stop and restart apparmor using the command line

sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor stop
sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor start

Many thanks to Chris Guiver #12 for this subtle tip. You DO need to restart
apparmor for it to work!
All of the above solutions are from other people, I hope I have put it in a
format that will be easier for new users to follow. PLEASE let me know.

[Bug 2061747] Re: obsolete out-of-tree ivsc dkms in favor of in-tree one

2024-05-04 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
I have upgraded to the noble-proposed ipu6-drivers package. Is there a
particular kernel that needs to be installed to get the camera to work?
Or is the kernel fix not yet available?

[Bug 2064809] [NEW] zstd support not enabled in makedumpfile

2024-05-04 Thread Heitor Alves de Siqueira
Public bug reported:

Zstd support seems to be missing from the latest makedumpfile versions.
Although it seemed to have been introduced after bug 1949395, this is
what I get in a Debian sid VM:

halves@sid:~$ makedumpfile -v
makedumpfile: version 1.7.5 (released on 12 Apr 2024)
lzo enabled
snappy disabled
zstddisabled

The same is the case in a fresh Noble container:
halves@noble:~$ makedumpfile -v
makedumpfile: version 1.7.5 (released on 12 Apr 2024)
lzo enabled
snappy disabled
zstddisabled

halves@noble:~$ dpkg -l | grep makedumpfile

[Bug 2033121] Re: Traffic Server crashes when trying to CONNECT to an unroutable IP

2024-05-04 Thread Richard Schwab
Given the complete lack of any feedback after 8 months and now 24.04
being released, which ships a newer version not affected by this bug, I
don't care about this bug being addressed anymore.

It seems like there's virtually zero usage of this functionality, so
this frequent denial of service during regular operation doesn't affect
many other users.

If anyone else runs into this, you'll probably either want to switch to
Ubuntu 24.04 or build your own package.

[Bug 2064815] [NEW] Always black screen on first reboot after fresh install 24.04, Intel and AMD GPU

2024-05-04 Thread Fred Jupiter
Public bug reported:

Always completely unresponsive black screen on first reboot after fresh
install 24.04 Kubuntu, both Intel and AMD GPU. Actually, the computer
should show the manufacturer logo, and then start the desktop (in this
case KDE Plasma).

I followed this advice:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Kubuntu/comments/1cdko49/comment/l1uf573/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

It seems that "quiet splash" is the actual problem, not a possible
solution with adding "nomodeset".

I edited the GRUB entry as follows (with results added):

1) With only "quiet splash" (no "nomodeset"), default installation,
fresh install of Kubuntu 24.04: only black screen, nothing happens. Only
hard reset will do anything.

2) Add "nomodeset" to "quiet splash": everything works perfectly. Also
works permanently with editing of /etc/default/grub.

3) Delete "quiet splash" in GRUB and do not add "nomodeset" (or delete
"nomodeset", if previously added): everything works perfectly (see
Reddit link above).

4) Delete "nomodeset", after having added it to /etc/default/grub and
updated grub previously, but leave the 'original' "quiet splash":
computer hangs, completely unresponsive, after showing the following
code:

Booting a command list
Loading Linux 6.8.0-31-generic ...
Loading initial ramdisk ...

5) Again, boot without both "quiet splash" or "nomodeset": everything works
perfectly. Also works permanently with /etc/default/grub.
It went quite fast, but after "Loading initial ramdisk ..." I think the next
code line was "secure boot is enabled". It might be a problem with "secure
boot" and "quiet splash". Secure boot is enabled in both my installations, so I
can't try the other option ("secure boot" disabled in the EFI BIOS before
installation).

Workaround (for me):
- Edit /etc/default/grub: the line "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=". Delete the
words "quiet splash" (leave the quotation marks '').
- Run sudo update-grub

Systems used (two different notebooks):
1) Kubuntu 24.04, VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
[AMD/ATI] Barcelo (rev c2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) DeviceName: AMD Radeon
Integrated Graphics Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Barcelo-.
2) Kubuntu 24.04, VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Raptor Lake-P
[Iris Xe Graphics] (rev 04) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Lenovo
Raptor Lake-P [Iris Xe Graphics].

See log file from notebook No., 2 Iris Xe Graphics, attached. This is
what I did:

- "quiet splash" deleted by me from /etc/default/grub = everything fine.
- Added "quiet splash" to /etc/default/grub again = black screen.
- Hard reset, and then deleted "quiet splash" from GRUB after ESC, editing with
"e" and CTRL + x = computer starts.
- entered sudo journalctl -k -b -1 > /tmp/kernel.log in a terminal. The output
is attached.

If you need 1) cat /proc/version_signature > version.log and/or 2) sudo
lspci -vnvn > lspci-vnvn.log please say so. I can't get at the computers
at the moment. But if it will help, all get both logs mentioned for both
computers and upload them.

[Bug 2064819] [NEW] Ubuntu: 22.04+ cannot unistall firefox through apt

2024-05-04 Thread Simon
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I think, I discovered a problem with the deb package under Ubuntu 22.04
and 24.04

When you try removing firefox through apt or apt-get, firefox does not get
uninstalled properly.
The snap remains installed and accessible through the application menu.

Steps to reproduce:
(0. optional: install firefox through sudo apt install firefox)
1. Use a terminal to run the command "sudo apt remove firefox"
2. Confirm that firefox snap is still installed and available through the start
menu

What should happen:
Firefox should get removed properly when using apt.
That means either uninstalling it through the same method it was installed or
letting the user know that further action is required.

What happens instead:
The firefox snap does not get uninstalled and the user is not informed that
further action is required to remove firefox.

Why this is happening:
When installing firefox through apt, the package uses the "preinst" script to
install it using the snap daemon instead. However when uninstalling the
package, the "prerm" script is not configured to uninstall the firefox snap.
Instead, it just removes the default symlinks for firefox.
However, the systems still falls back to the snap package because it is still
installed through snap.

How to fix:
Put something like this in the "prerm" or "postrm"-Script of the package: "snap
remove firefox"
If it has been left out on purpose, there should at least be a message, letting
the user know. Something like this:
echo "In order to fully remove the package, you need to uninstall the firefox
snap with the following command:"
echo "snap remove firefox"
Here is an entry from the debian docs on how to use maintainer scripts:
https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-maintainerscripts.html

My current Ubuntu Release:
Description:Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
Release:24.04
Also happens on anything newer than Ubuntu 22.04

Kind regards,
Simon

[Bug 2064208] Re: Installer crashes when booting from USB on Raspberry Pi

2024-05-04 Thread Graham Haddock
I loaded your 'test image' onto an NVMe SSD on a RPi 5, edited the
config.txt file, and it worked!

[RPi5 4 GB, Pimoroni Base, Samsung 256 GB PM9B1 SSD]

I had tried all kinds of things over the last week, different NVMe
cards, different imagers, all unsuccessfully.

24.04 running with the noticeable extra speed of a PCIe/NVMe is sweet!

The only quirk, was that, even though I selected English (US) keyboard
during the initial installation dialog, I ended up on an English (UK)
keyboard. This was easily fixed by going to the settings/Keyboard and
editing.

I would suggest you add some kind of suffix or change to the file name,
since, if this is going to be the only solution to NVMe or USB operation
for a while, you don't want the confusion from two different
functionality files with the same name out in the 'wild'.

Thanks for the fix.

[Bug 2064827] [NEW] [5.19.0-1030-lowlatency] BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 00000000000006b1

2024-05-04 Thread sophi
Public bug reported:

Hi

I'm running ubuntu server for monitoring (zoneminder) and other services, and
it crashes after few days of running.
Sometimes I don't have crash in logs, and server has no monitor or keyboard
attached to it. I made the server remote syslog reporting for that problem, but
this time I got the logs.

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS
Release:22.04
Codename: jammy

The first stack trace mentions raid5_get_active_stripe that's why I
report it here.

2024-05-04 Thread Sudip Mukherjee
I can confirm that the package macutils from focal-proposed has fixed
the bug for me.

Test done:

Install macutils on a focal installation.
execute "binhex -H" and confirm the issue is seen

Add focal-proposed to apt sources
update macutils from focal-proposed
follow the testplan and execute all the binaries with "-H" and confirm that
none of them segfaults.

I have the same problem, can't resize any windows tested with Krita and
VSCodium. I don't know if this is related, but sometimes the mouse
clicks through the windows to the window below the current one. (only
for those that don't resize) basically unusable

[Bug 2064037] Re: GDM session crashes after returning from a screen-off.

2024-05-04 Thread Jon Crall
I've updated my bios, but the issue seems to persist. It's still
inconsistent. Sometimes it un-blanks without issue, sometimes I get the
gray-screen-of-death, and sometimes it unblanks directly to the login
page without a GSOD.

I'll try any other debugging suggestions, including a OS-reinstall. The
alternative is that I disable screen-blanking (which seems like a waste
of power) or I revert to 22.04.

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11 after logging "MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events handled properly?"

2024-05-04 Thread why_hello_there
Coincident with this bug, I'm experiencing other bugs, so I think they
may be related,

Is there a timeline on this merging to Jammy?

The other bugs:

* emacs is super laggy (500ms - 1000ms delays on typing)

* gnome-terminal of course (500ms - indefinite delays on typing)

* screen flickers and freezes on startup, and resolves after ~10s

* 50% of the time, screen never turns back on after suspend, requiring
hard reboot (Ctrl+REISUB)

* I get a random "System problem detected" after every startup

I'd rather catch this fix from the main PPA once it's been tested
enough, any timeline on it merging to Jammy?
