[Bug 1974063] [NEW] system load indicator does not show memory usage, ignoring preferences

2022-05-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Running Ubuntu 22.04:

First, the System Load Indicator (indicator-multiload) did not respect
my preferences to display Memory Usage, which is the only thing I need
displayed in the upper bar. I could click on the indicator and a drop
down would show me the memory load and other statistics, but I wanted it
constantly displayed in the bar. This used to work, before upgrading to
22.04.

Now we come to a more serious problem: I started messing around with the
Preference tab for System Load Indicator. I thought increasing the
"System Monitor Width" setting above 40 pixels might help. I increased
it way more than that, perhaps to 600. The system stopped working. The
mouse refused to move. No keystrokes did anything. Eventually, the
screen went black and pushed me out to the login page, but upon logging
in, the same problems persisted.

I finally tried doing an emergency root login and doing
apt remove indicator-multiload.
Now I could log in and have a normally functioning system. But I wanted the
indicator, so I did sudo apt install indicator-multiload,
and the problems returned. Evidently some bad configuration setting had
persisted through the removal. So I removed it again, and that's where I am
now.

So a few questions:
1) What is the "System Monitor Width" setting in Preferences for, and should it
not prevent a catastrophically bad value from being entered?
2) In what file does this application store this preference, so that I might
fix it and reinstall the monitor, and run the system?
3) How can I force the indicator to display the memory usage in the top bar as
I want to do.

[Bug 1974068] [NEW] Touchpad tapping not working after upgrade to Ubuntu 22.04

2022-05-18 Thread Sten-Ove Olsson
Public bug reported:

I have an Intel NUC pc with Ubuntu, recently upgraded to 22.04.

I use a Logitech wireless keyboard K830 with integrated touchpad.

After the Ubuntu upgrade the tapping function (emulating left mouse-
click) of the touchpad doesn't work anymore.

I can move the screen arrow around by using the touchpad, but for mouse
clicking I have to use the button below the touchpad, which is very
awkward.

Moving the screen arrow around by sweeping and clicking an object by
tapping, all on the touchpad is very much more convenient.

So please fix this!

[Bug 1974067] Re: build bin:libnfsidmap-regex

** Description changed:

Following the removal of src:libnfsidmap-regex in debian, it will also
be removed from Ubuntu. We need therefore to start building
  bin:libnfsidmap-regex from the src:nfs-utils package.
+
+ The reason we need a separate binary package, instead of shipping it
+ together with one of the existing ones like debian does, is because
+ src:libnfsidmap-regex was in universe. Unless we decide to move head
+ with the MIR at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nfs-
+ utils/+bug/1960824, in which case we would not have this delta with
+ debian.

Reproducible when invoking gcc directly instead of via the mpicc
wrapper; also reproducible with gcc -O2 instead of gcc -O3.

This warning is patently nonsense. The size ranges listed is, in hex,
0x8000-0x. We are not trying to memset an
object of that size, and at runtime there is no problem with the actual
behavior.

So something is wrong with gcc's calculation here, resulting in a
spurious warning.

This issue was not reproduced when the autopkgtest ran on ppc64el in
Debian. I don't know why, as the compiler should be essentially the
same between Debian and Ubuntu - and I've ruled out this being a problem
of the -O3 default that exists in Ubuntu packaging but not in Debian.

[Bug 1969307] Re: Firefox Snap launcher keeps disappearing from Unity launcher

2022-05-18 Thread JG
This has been happening to me since 21.10. I wanted to add that I have
the Firefox launcher as a favorite in Unity which as far as I can tell
remains in place consistently. However, Firefox sessions, which I
believe are what this bug report is targeting, do disappear at times. I
have attached two screenshots, one of which shows my screen with an open
Firefox window open but no orange dot in Unity reflecting that. The
second screenshot shows the tab moved to a new Firefox window and the
orange dot returns (but the orange dot will go away if the tab is moved
back to the original window).

As another piece of data, if I have multiple Firefox windows open and
scattered across virtual desktops, while initially all the Unity
launchers on each desktop have one orange dot showing the presence of an
active Firefox window, when the bug hits then all the orange dots on all
virtual desktops go away (unless of course I launch a new Firefox
session).

[Bug 1973802] Re: Gnome Shell crashes when disconnecting external monitor

2022-05-18 Thread Ralf Sternberg
So `ubuntu-bug ` fails and an error UI pops up, asking to
send an error report (which I did). After that, `apport-cli` tells me
that there are no pending crash reports.

Strangely, there are no recent items on
https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/, only some that are
several days, some several months old.

Trying to attach the crash log here failed again. I've opened
https://bugs.launchpad.net/launchpad/+bug/1974066 for that.

Seems I'm running out of options, sorry.

[Bug 1973785] Re: lock screen message appeared during an SSH upgrade

2022-05-18 Thread Nick Rosbrook
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ Server users will see an unnecessary error message about failing to
+ disable the lock screen, which may cause confusion.
+
+ [Test Plan]
+
+ * Obtain a console on Impish server, e.g. ssh to a remote host.
+ * Verify that XDG_SESSION_TYPE is set to 'tty':
+
+ $ echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
+
+ * Start a release upgrade:
+
+ $ do-release-upgrade
+
+ * After accepting the prompt to start the upgrade, observe the "Unable
+ to disable lock screen" message.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+
+ The patch changes the early-return condition in the except block in
+ _inhibitIdle. If problems occurred, it would be related to the "Unable
+ to disable lock screen" message.
+
+ [Original Description]
+
I was upgrading and Ubuntu 20.04 system to Ubuntu 22.04 over an ssh
connection and noticed the following message:

  `Unable to disable lock screen

It is highly recommended that the lock screen be disabled during the
upgrade to prevent later issues. Please ensure your screen lock is
  disabled before continuing.

  To continue please press [ENTER]`

Given that I'm connected via ssh the message seems unnecessary. Some
  details from main.log:

[Bug 1972153] Re: [MIR] libsoup3

2022-05-18 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

- Needs to be MIR.

- What doesn’t qualify for immediate promotion (soname bump) is the dep on
- sysprof which is in universe and needs to be checked (either get it
- promoted or downgrading the dep)
+ [Availability]
+ Already in Ubuntu universe.
+ Builds and works for all supported architectures including i386
+ https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libsoup3
+
+ [Rationale]
+ GNOME is switching to libsoup3. This has been delayed a few releases but I
suspect it will be more mandatory for GNOME 43 or GNOME 44.
+ - gnome-bluetooth3 is a new runtime dependency of package gnome-shell that
+ we already support
+
+ libsoup3 is requested in Ubuntu main no longer than August 4 to allow
+ time for reverse dependencies to be switched before 22.10 Feature Freeze
+ August 25.
+
+ [Security]
+ - https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvekey.cgi?keyword=libsoup
+ - https://ubuntu.com/security/cve?package=libsoup2.4
+ - https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/source-package/libsoup2.4
+
+ - no `suid` or `sgid` binaries
+ - no executables in `/sbin` and `/usr/sbin`
+ - Package does not install services, timers or recurring jobs
+ - Package does not open privileged ports (ports < 1024)
+ - debian/rules builds with all standard hardening flags
+
+ This is a security-sensitive library that allows apps to access data
+ over the Internet.
+
+ [Quality assurance - function/usage]
+ The package works well right after install
+
+ [Quality assurance - maintenance]
+ - The package is maintained well in Debian/Ubuntu and has not too many
+   and long term critical bugs open
+ - Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libsoup3
+ - Ubuntu older series https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libsoup2.4
+ - Debian https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=libsoup3
+ - Debian older series
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=libsoup2.4
+ - GNOME https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/libsoup/-/issues
+ - The package does not deal with exotic hardware we cannot support
+
+ [Quality assurance - testing]
+ - Runs a test suite on build time, if it fails it makes the build fail, link
to build log:
+
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libsoup3/3.0.6-1/+build/23589175/+files/buildlog_ubuntu-kinetic-amd64.libsoup3_3.0.6-1_BUILDING.txt.gz
+
+ - Includes autopkgtests, both a basic superficial test and an installed-
+ tests suite
+
+ [Quality assurance - packaging]
+ - debian/watch is present and works
+
+ - Does not yield massive lintian Warnings or Errors
+ - Lintian overrides are not present
+
+ - Des not rely on obsolete or about to be demoted packages.
+ - Has no python2 or GTK2 dependencies
+
+ - Does not ask debconf questions
+
+ - Packaging and build is easy:
+
+ [UI standards]
+ Skipping
+
+ [Dependencies]
+ - No dependencies not already in main
+ - libsoup-3.0-dev has been added to the Extra-Exclude list to keep its
sysprof dependency out of main for now
+
+ [Standards compliance]
+ - This package correctly follows FHS and Debian Policy
+
+ [Maintenance/Owner]
+ - Owning Team will be Ubuntu Desktop (Co-maintained with Debian GNOME team.)
+ - Team is not yet, but will subscribe to the package before promotion
+
+ - This does not use static builds
+ - This does not use vendored code
+
+ [Background information]
+ The Ubuntu Desktop Team expects that it will be necessary to keep both
libsoup2.4 and libsoup3 in main for Ubuntu 22.10.
+
+ This is a big and complicated transition. Apps will crash if they are
+ linked against both libraries.
+
+ Upstream progress tracker:
+
+ Migration hints:
+
+ https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-
+ archive/transitions/html/libsoup3.html
+
+ Estimated 29 affected source packages in main (some are libraries so true
affected count is higher):
+
https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-archive/transitions/html/libsoup3-main.html

[Bug 1974075] [NEW] fwupd-refresh.service fails to start on focal

2022-05-18 Thread imker
Public bug reported:

Hello,

since the 18 of April 2020 some of my Ubuntu 20.04 (focal) installations
report the following error:

May 18 17:27:06 city systemd[1]: Starting Refresh fwupd metadata and update
motd...
May 18 17:27:06 city systemd[1]: fwupd-refresh.service: Main process exited,

'exit-code'.
May 18 17:27:06 city systemd[1]: Failed to start Refresh fwupd metadata and
update motd.

At first I thought this is sporadic and will go away, but since one
month this error is reported constantly.

This only happens on machines that was installed from a focal ISO file.
Installations that was upgraded form earlier Ubuntu version to focal
work fine. Also machines that are already on a newer Version of Ubuntu
don't show this problem.

Trying to start the fwupd-refresh.service manually on the affected
machines shows the following:

sudo systemctl status fwupd-refresh

[Bug 1973758] Re: Azure: Mellanox VF NIC crashes when removed

2022-05-18 Thread Matthew G McGovern
I don't this this fix is correct, I am able to reproduce the crash in a
hyper-v VM and this generates a different KASAN bad free with the repro
case.

If you want to test (and have an environment with an SRIOV interface), you can
toggle SRIOV rapidly with this powershell snippet:
$vmname= 'name of vm'
while (1){
 Set-VMNetworkAdapter -VMName $vmname -IovWeight 100
 Set-VMNetworkAdapter -VMName $vmname -IovWeight 0
}

[Bug 1973847] Re: Sometimes Firefox could not change mode from English to Japanese

2022-05-18 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report.

This sounds not as a bug to me, but rather a support request.

As regards the first issue, please go to Settings -> Region & Language,
click the cog wheel to the right of the Input Sources label, and make
sure that "Use the same source for all windows" is selected.

Since you have a Japanese keyboard, I think it may work smoother is you
open the file /usr/share/ibus/component/mozc.xml for editing and replace

default

with

jp

Pls let us know if that helps.

[Bug 1971109] Re: [BPO] Backport opencpn 5.6.2 from Kinetic to Jammy

2022-05-18 Thread Dan Streetman
Looks mostly ok, couple of questions though:

1) the description says 5.6.2 has several important bugfixes; if that
means the 5.6.0 version in jammy is affected by those bugs, the correct
approach is to patch that version to fix the bugs. The backports pocket
shouldn't be used *instead* of the SRU process. Can you clarify if there
are bugs in 5.6.0 in jammy that should be fixed?

2) I'm confused about 0004-Build-Use-20.04-plugins-on-22.04.patch; I see
it's setting the plugin target version to 20.04, but how does that get
the plugins from 20.04? It doesn't expect to get plugins from 20.04,
right? Are the plugins included in the source, but expecting a '20.04'
build? Or does the application download plugins from some external
source at runtime? Or something else? I think it would be good to add
some clarification either to the patch header, and/or here.

There are not that many plugins available for jammy yet, and the Focal
plugins are actually compatible so the patch makes these plugins

[Bug 1974079] [NEW] Firefox and Thunderbird fail to open after recent updates

2022-05-18 Thread W.R James Barber
Public bug reported:

System Info:
Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Firefox 100.0 (64 bit)
Thunderbird 91.8.1 (64 bit)

Received various updates yesterday which required a reboot. After
reboot, base system operates fine, but Thunderbird and Firefox fail to
open. As far as I can tell, these are the only applications affected.

Tried to file a ubuntu-bug report but Firefox was the default browser,
so that failed as well. I switched to Chromium as default and the bug
report succeeds.

Launching either Firefox or Thunderbird in Safe Mode from the terminal
succeeds.

As a troubleshooting step, I attempted to Mark All Upgrades, only files
available were:

apt (2.0.6) to 2.0.8
apt-utils (2.0.6) to 2.0.8
libapt-pkg6.0 (2.0.6) to 2.0.8
login (1:4.8.1-1ubuntu5.20.04.1) to 1:4.8.1-1ubuntu5.20.04.2
passwd (1:4.8.1-1ubuntu5.20.04.1) to 1:4.8.1-1ubuntu5.20.04.2

Of special note: yesterdays automatic updates do not appear in Synaptic
History. The only updates which appear in recent History are the ones I
manually applied. They do appear when using :

find /var/lib/dpkg/info/ -name \*.list -mtime -3 | sed
's#.list$##;s#.*/##'

[Bug 1971109] Re: [BPO] Backport opencpn 5.6.2 from Kinetic to Jammy

2022-05-18 Thread Alec Leamas
As for 1): My initial description could and should have been better. I'm
actually not aware of bugs that can and should be fixed by point
patches. That is, the description is wrong.

The core problem the backport tries to address is that OpenCPN users
(thousands, for sure) are accustomed to using a PPA [1] These packages
are not really "packaged" in the sense we are used to, there is no
source package, no review, etc -- it's basically the auto-generated
output from cmake/cpack.

However, the PPA is up to date with the latest releases. If we want to
offer proper repos instead, backports are necessary to make the official
packaging useful.

Until we get this running there are no issues reported through the
Ubuntu channels. If I look in upstream there are of course all sorts of
problems which are solved by latest release. But I honestly don't (yet)
see the value of point-patching any of these. Of course, user input in
upstream or here might change the situation. I am certainly prepared to
handle this by updating the 5.6.0 package if/when the situation occurs.

On a sidenote, 5.6.2 is backported not only to Bullseye but also Buster.

[Bug 1974083] [NEW] Raspad tablet - Caja drags and drops on scroll

2022-05-18 Thread Shufei
Public bug reported:

Occasionally in Caja especially, when using the touchscreen of the
Raspad 3 with Raspberry 4b inside, a finger scroll will usually be
misinterpretted as a drag and drop of files or folders. There is no way
I can discern to disable the drag and drop action across the system,
which makes this behaviour vexing when working with files in caja.

I do have gsfonts installed, version 1:8.11+urwcyr1.0.7~pre44-4.5 . As
noted, the font rendering is fine if I disable
"browser.display.use_document_fonts". So it is not a missing font
problem.

Update: this problem does not occur with firefox-trunk (version

[Bug 1971109] Re: [BPO] Backport opencpn 5.6.2 from Kinetic to Jammy

2022-05-18 Thread Dan Streetman
Ok that sounds good to me, thanks!

One note for future changes, in this upload the bug reference was 'LP:
1971109', however the launchpad tooling requires that to be 'LP:
#1971109' (with the '#'); it's not important enough to require a new
upload but do try to remember for next upload.

[Bug 1971619] Re: forward mode open is adding libvirt iptables rules

2022-05-18 Thread Jeff
Thank you for checking!
It seems I will need to retest versions, i was simply checking if it added ANY
libvirt rules (iptables-save|grep -i virt), as we expected "open" to NOT add
any firewall rules. I was not checking for specific libvirt rules.

[Bug 1972153] Re: [MIR] libsoup3

2022-05-18 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

-
  [Availability]
  Already in Ubuntu universe.
Builds and works for all supported architectures including i386
  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libsoup3

  [Rationale]
GNOME is switching to libsoup3. This has been delayed a few releases but I
suspect it will be more mandatory for GNOME 43 or GNOME 44.
  - gnome-bluetooth3 is a new runtime dependency of package gnome-shell that
  we already support

libsoup3 is requested in Ubuntu main no longer than August 4 to allow
time for reverse dependencies to be switched before 22.10 Feature Freeze
  August 25.

  [Security]
  - https://ubuntu.com/security/cve?package=libsoup2.4
  - https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/source-package/libsoup2.4

  - no `suid` or `sgid` binaries
  - no executables in `/sbin` and `/usr/sbin`
  - Package does not install services, timers or recurring jobs
  - Package does not open privileged ports (ports < 1024)
  - debian/rules builds with all standard hardening flags

This is a security-sensitive library that allows apps to access data
  over the Internet.

  [Quality assurance - function/usage]
The package works well right after install

  [Quality assurance - maintenance]
  - The package is maintained well in Debian/Ubuntu and has not too many
and long term critical bugs open
  - Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libsoup3
  - Ubuntu older series https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libsoup2.4
  - Debian https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=libsoup3
  - Debian older series
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=libsoup2.4
  - GNOME https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/libsoup/-/issues
  - The package does not deal with exotic hardware we cannot support

  [Quality assurance - testing]
  - Runs a test suite on build time, if it fails it makes the build fail, link
to build log:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libsoup3/3.0.6-1/+build/23589175/+files/buildlog_ubuntu-kinetic-amd64.libsoup3_3.0.6-1_BUILDING.txt.gz

  - Includes autopkgtests, both a basic superficial test and an installed-
  tests suite

  [Quality assurance - packaging]
  - debian/watch is present and works

  - Does not yield massive lintian Warnings or Errors
  - Lintian overrides are not present

  - Des not rely on obsolete or about to be demoted packages.
  - Has no python2 or GTK2 dependencies

  - Does not ask debconf questions

  - Packaging and build is easy:
  https://salsa.debian.org/gnome-team/libsoup3/-/blob/debian/master/debian/rules

  [UI standards]
  Skipping

  [Dependencies]
  - No dependencies not already in main
  - libsoup-3.0-dev has been added to the Extra-Exclude list to keep its
sysprof dependency out of main for now

  [Standards compliance]
  - This package correctly follows FHS and Debian Policy

  [Maintenance/Owner]
  - Owning Team will be Ubuntu Desktop (Co-maintained with Debian GNOME team.)
  - Team is not yet, but will subscribe to the package before promotion

  - This does not use static builds
  - This does not use vendored code

  [Background information]
The Ubuntu Desktop Team expects that it will be necessary to keep both
libsoup2.4 and libsoup3 in main for Ubuntu 22.10.

This is a big and complicated transition. Apps will crash if they are
  linked against both libraries.

  https://libsoup.org/libsoup-3.0/migrating-from-libsoup-2.html

- Estimated 29 affected source packages in main (some are libraries so true
affected count is higher):
+ Estimated 30 affected source packages in main (some are libraries so true

snap) from a terminal, following error message is displayed :
cannot change profile for the next exec call: No such file or directory
snap-update-ns failed with code 1

Workaround : After each reboot :
$ sudo apparmor_parser -r /var/lib/snapd/apparmor/profiles/*

I did NOT find 'snap.firefox.service', but I attach the output of following
command :
$ systemctl list-dependencies --after snap-firefox-1351.mount

[Bug 1973482] Re: kernel 4.15.0.177 break everything on Dell XPS 15 9570

2022-05-18 Thread piotr
Similar issues on Asus UX305UA

All are related to the recent kernel 4.15.0-177 (all issues disappear
after booting 4.15.0-176)

- no sound output device listed - only loopback alsa device is available, I had
to manually modprobe snd-hda-intel driver
- mounting /boot/efi hangs for 1m30
- when the login screen is displayed, the keyboard doesn't work, I need to wait
a couple of minutes
 until it starts working

[Bug 1974071] Re: package firefox 100.0+build2-0ubuntu0.21.10.1 failed to install/upgrade: new firefox package pre-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2022-05-18 Thread Erich Eickmeyer 
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:

1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Please also ensure that you include the release and flavour of Ubuntu
that you are using.

Thank you!

[Bug 1974086] Re: QGIS Tooltips blank under 2204

+ I rely on QGIS (https://qgis.org/en/site/ installed with `apt install
+ qgis`).

Hovering over tools in the toolbar under 2204 show the yellow box for
the tooltip, but no text. The same version of QGIS (latest from the
developer) shows text in the tooltips in Umate 2004. See example
  attached of missing tool tips.

There are so many buttons, and more through extensive plugins, that not
seeing tool tips is a major issue.

Thank you for the awesome disto? Whenever I distro hop I always find
myself back at Ubuntu Mate as the most stable and functional out there.

[Bug 1974091] [NEW] no-longer-needed build-dep on execstack

2022-05-18 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

The nvidia packages in Ubuntu have a build-dep on execstack, as
requested in bug #409456.

That bug was filed 13 years ago, about the fact that the upstream
binaries were built with executable stack. They've been rebuilt a few
times since then, and there are no longer any upstream binaries with an
executable stack:

$ find NVIDIA-Linux/ -name *.so* | xargs -n1 readelf -lW | grep GNU_STACK.*E
$ readelf -SW NVIDIA-Linux/nvidia-{smi,xconfig,persistenced} | grep GNU_STACK.*E
$

So the current use of execstack is a no-op.

The execstack binary is built from prelink, which was dropped from
Debian over a year ago.

Please drop this build-dependency from all the nvidia packages so that
we can drop prelink from the archive.
