[Bug 1867423] [NEW] Update to glibc 2.31-0ubuntu5 breaks system

2020-03-14 Thread Evgen
Public bug reported:

After upgrade to this version I'm unable to login into system. Right after
update
- I can't do anything with sudo. System immediately says that password is
incorrect
$ sudo .
Sorry, try again.
Sorry, try again.
sudo: 3 incorrect password attempts
- GUI apps which require admin rights (synaptic) also stopped working
- After reboot SDDM can't reach login screen
- if you try recovery mode with root parameter system complains
/sbin/sulogin: error while loading shared libraries: libcrypt.so.1: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

So after this update file
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcrypt.so.1
got deleted.

On Kubuntu 20.04, which was last upgraded yesterday, upgrade stopped
with some error about unfinished configuration of libcrypt1. On Ubuntu
20.04 (GNOME) which was last upgraded at Feb 16, upgrade went well but
system also got broken.

Once this hits you, GDM won't start. You're able to switch to TTY
though. But when attempting to login there, you're greeted with "Login

[Bug 1867426] [NEW] ~/snap and fscrypt

2020-03-14 Thread Nafallo Bjälevik
Public bug reported:

For `snap refresh` to work with an fscrypt encrypted home directory, we
need to set `"policy_version": "2"` under options in
`/etc/fscrypt.conf`, per https://github.com/google/fscrypt#cant-log-in-
with-ssh-even-when-users-encrypted-home-directory-is-unlocked

Since Focal will ship with Linux 5.4 we should change the default
generated config to avoid headaches later.

2020-03-14 Thread Rik Mills
If people are still hitting this error now, can you please provide
details of the package versions before and after upgrade (or what it was
trying to upgrade to.

e.g, the original report was on upgrading glibc to (2.31-0ubuntu3) over
(2.30-0ubuntu3), while now 2.30-0ubuntu5 is the current version in
release pocket.

also what was the version of libcrypt1 (if any) before and after the
upgrade

can't log in to any accounts, including root through recovery. Trying to
log in to my own account from tty instantly says "Login incorrect"
without even asking for the password, trying to access root shell from
recovery complains about missing libcrypt.so.1. Login manager doesn't
even launch.

[Bug 1867423] Re: Update to glibc 2.31-0ubuntu5 breaks system

2020-03-14 Thread Evgen
I managed to restore system (of course it's a temporary solution until
libc6 package is fixed)

- boot from any debian-based live image or from parallel system
- gain access to disk with broken system
- sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt (where sda2 is a partition of your broken system)
- wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/453587373/libc6_2.30-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb
- dpkg -x libc6_2.30-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb ~/libc6-previous
- sudo cp ~/libc6-previous/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcrypt-2.30.so
/mnt/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/
- cd /mnt/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/
- sudo ln -s libcrypt-2.30.so libcrypt.so.1

Now you can at least boot your system.

[Bug 1866844] Re: package libc6:amd64 2.31-0ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: installed libc6:amd64 package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 127

2020-03-14 Thread Jeffrey Bouter
I have resolved the issue by doing the following:

1) From grub, change the linux line; remove 'quiet' and 'splash', and
change 'ro' to 'rw init=/bin/bash' (see below if you need more
information)

This will allow you to boot into your system sort of"recovery mode".

2) When booted, run: mount -o remount,rw /

3) Copy a "bogus" library over the library that the upgrade is
expecting: cp /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcrypt.so /lib/x86_64-linux-
gnu/libcrypt.so.1

4) run: apt --fix-broken install

5) Resume the original upgrade: apt full-upgrade

6) reboot (this might require forcefully rebooting using your power or
reset button)

Information regarding the grub bit:

It may take a few tries to get into grub. You need to press ESC at the
right time during the boot process (just after your bios/efi post has
shown), or forcefully rebooting during startup will most likely bring
you there as well

Select the "ubuntu" line, and hit the 'e' key on your keyboard.

Go to the line that looks like:

linux /boot/vmlinuz-5.4.0-14-generic root=UUID= ro
quiet splash $vt_handoff

Change it into:

linux /boot/vmlinuz-5.4.0-14-generic root=UUID= rw
init=/bin/bash $vt_handoff

[Bug 1867428] [NEW] /dev/vcsm-cma missing on Ubuntu 18.04.4 aarch64

2020-03-14 Thread ahb
Public bug reported:

On fully upgraded Ubuntu 18.04 aarch64 the vc_sm_cma kernel module does
not expose /dev/vcsm-cma, thus application working with the Raspberry Pi
Camera, e.g. raspivid, do not work properly.

$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.

Distributor ID: Ubuntu

Description:Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS

Release:18.04

Codename: bionic

Test with both linux-image-5.3.0-1017-raspi2 and linux-
image-5.3.0-1018-raspi2 in combination with with
https://github.com/raspberrypi/userland at
6e6a2c859a17a195fbb6a97c9da584dd2b9b0178 compiled using ./buildme
--aarch64 on Raspberry Pi 4 and 3+.

Everything works, if I use a recent Raspbian kernel on the Ubuntu image:
Copy RASPBIAN/boot/kernel8.img to UBUNTU/boot/firmware/vmlinuz,
RASPBIAN/boot/bcm2711-rpi-4-b.dtb to UBUNTU/boot/firmware/ and
RASPBIAN/lib/modules/4.19.97-v8+ to UBUNTU/lib/modules.

I cannot tell whether the problem is specific to the 5.3.0 kernel
compiled for Ubuntu or a general issue with the 5.3.0 kernel as the
Raspbian kernel is still based on 4.19.

2020-03-14 Thread brett hassall
thanks.

this worked for me.

I have another linux partition installed so I booted into the other
partition, manually installed the contents of the new libcrypt1 .deb (it
is only a lib and a link). The deb was already in the cache from the
failed update.

Rebooted back into focal. I could now login. sudo worked again too.
To tidy up, ran:
sudo apt --fix-broken install
sudo apt-get update

All seems good for now.

[Bug 1864204] Re: nondeterministic failure when no keyring backends are available

2020-03-14 Thread Dan Streetman
** Description changed:

  [impact]

when no backends are available for python-keyring, it will sometimes
silently ignore all requests to set or get credentials, and sometimes it
will raise RuntimeError for all requests.

  [test case]

when there are no backends, there are 2 built-in backends that will be
the only ones available, the 'chainer' backend and the 'fail' backend.
The 'fail' backend always has priority 0, while the 'chainer' backend
has priority 10 if it contains any actual backends, and priority 0 if it
is empty. So in the situtation where there are no actual backends, both
'chainer' and 'fail' will have priority 0. Since the 'backends' class
stores its backend implementation instances in a python set(), which is
unordered, it is non-deterministic which of those backends are used at
  any given time.

Since the behavior is non-deterministic, simply trying this multiple
times may result in each behavior. Rebooting or logout/login can help
'switch' the behavior, although simply re-running the test multiple
times should be enough to eventually test both backends.

  >>> import keyring
  >>> [keyring.backend.get_all_keyring()]

the above python code will show the current list of backends, and since
they both have the same priority (in this situation) the first in the
list will be used. If the list looks like:

  [[,
  ]]

with 'ChainerBackend' first, all keyring functions will return silently
  with None, e.g.:

  >>> keyring.set_password('test', 'test', 'test')
  >>> keyring.get_password('test', 'test')
  >>>

with 'fail.Keyring' first, all keyring functions will raise
  RuntimeError:

  >>> import keyring
  >>> [keyring.backend.get_all_keyring()]
  [[,
]]
  >>> keyring.set_password('test', 'test', 'test')
  Traceback (most recent call last):

    File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/keyring/backends/fail.py", line 24, in

  raise RuntimeError(msg)
RuntimeError: No recommended backend was available. Install a recommended 3rd
party backend package; or, install the keyrings.alt package if you want to use
the non-recommended backends. See https://pypi.org/project/keyring for details.
  >>> keyring.get_password('test', 'test')

    File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/keyring/backends/fail.py", line 24, in

  raise RuntimeError(msg)
RuntimeError: No recommended backend was available. Install a recommended 3rd
party backend package; or, install the keyrings.alt package if you want to use
the non-recommended backends. See https://pypi.org/project/keyring for details.

  [regression potential]

- TBD as this is still an upstream bug
+ And regressions would likely occur when no keyring backends, or only a
+ single keyring backend, are/is availble, since this lowers the priority
+ of the 'chainer' keyring backend, and the intention of this is to fix
+ the existing problem when there is no keyring backend.
+
+ It should be noted that because the current behavior is non-
+ deterministic, alternating between no error at all and raised
+ RuntimeError, some existing users of python-keyring that occasionally do
+ not see any error (but then also occasionally see RuntimeError raised)
+ will now always see NoKeyringError raised (which does inherit from
+ RuntimeError, to keep backwards compatibility for users that currently
+ catch RuntimeError).
+
+ That is not actually a regression, since the behavior was non-
+ deterministic; one way had to be chosen, and always raising error when
+ there are no keyring backends is more appropriate than always silently
+ failing when there are no keyring backends.

  [scope]

This affects Eoan and later, including upstream.

This does not affect Bionic or earlier, as they do not have the commit
  that introduces the bug.

this was introduced upstream by commit
0114733e91f249246c8fec9e659cd7ba2388ea0d which was first included in
  version 16.1.0.

  [other info]

this affects any application that uses the python-launchpadlib library,
  as that internally uses keyrings.

Opened upstream PR to at least make the behavior deterministic:
  https://github.com/jaraco/keyring/pull/424

Also adds new 'NoKeyringError' so callers can catch that specific error
  instead of raising generic RuntimeError.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1866844 ***

I have faced another problem. Upgrade wasn't able to finish because
/usr/bin/perl: /lib64/libcrypt.so.1: version `XCRYPT_2.0' not found (required
by /usr/bin/perl)
Solution was to remove libc6-amd64 as Debian upstream suggests
(https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=951880). It's probably a
different bug but connected to this since libcrypt-2.31.so was found in /lib64 .

[Bug 1867431] [NEW] ERROR got an error from dpkg for pkg: 'libc6'

2020-03-14 Thread Emanuele
Public bug reported:

After the last upgrade I made this morning, at the error of dpkg on the libc6
package, I was no longer able to log in user: sudo apt update, full-upgrade or
any login with "sudo", the message was "you have passed 3 attempts for wrong
password ", at restart I tried to log in from the grub, recovery, I tried to
click" repair package "with no result, not even to start a root shell was not
successful, any attempt failed .
Luckily before the update I took a snapshot with Timeshift on Btrfs, so I have
the snapshot still saved in case it was used to reproduce the bug, I also have
logs saved, since I have separate subvolumes.
I enclose everything, if there are other details that can help you, I am
available.
Thank you

[Bug 1867433] [NEW] Grub won't install every time I try to install Backbox OS

2020-03-14 Thread ghostriders
Public bug reported:

These are the steps that I try:

First delete nvme0n1 data by filling the disk with zero's. This is done
using AOMEI partition wizard on medicat USB.

Backbox OS USB won't boot unless I type in the boot menu 'nomodeset'.

I intend to install backbox OS (ubuntu 18.02 LTS) on 256 GB SDD, nvme0n1

The partitions are as followed:

50 mb reserved BIOS
512 mb EPS
500 mb /boot
16 GB for swap
and the rest of the SDD-space is intended for /

I always get the following error:

grub-efi-amd64-signed’ package failed to install into /target/

After rebooting I enter grub rescue

I have tried the following to fix this error:

I used the live USB and installed boot-repair on it.
Boot-repair does not function due to a lot of bugs

I installed Peppermint OS onto a USB and used boot-repair again.
However boot-repair did not function due to a lot of bugs

I have had Backbox OS working before, there were no issues with the installation

I hope you have a solution to this problem.

[Bug 1797734] Re: slow calculator startup

2020-03-14 Thread Paul Smith
I'm not sure why the "is 2s too slow to start" is the question being
asked. Who starts and stops their calculator multiple times in a row?
That's not a realistic use-case for the vast majority.

Most people need a calculator once a day or every few days, and a
desktop calculator is not an application people tend to leave running
for long periods like a browser or word processor. They need to do a
quick bit of computation so they open the app, work in it for a few
minutes, then close it again. Startup speed is, after correctness,
probably THE most important aspect of a utility like this.

The interesting number for gnome-calculator is the FIRST number: how
long it takes to be able to use the application from a cold start. 15s
is much closer to what I see, EVERY TIME I start gnome-calculator.

That's just... close to unusable.

[Bug 1863672] Re: The 'new' persistent live method starting in 19.10 no longer works

2020-03-14 Thread sudodus
@Brian Murray,

As a developer and maintainer of software to create persistent live
drives, I have to consider the race condition affecting several
computers, when using the old 'casper-rw' label. Can I expect that you
will let soneone spend time trying to fix the bug, or should I modify my
software to use 'writable' for Focal Fossa?

[Bug 1866917] Re: Hexter sound generator dpesn't start from menu

2020-03-14 Thread Ross Gammon
OK - after battling with the build system to try and get Hexter
installed back on the original /usr/lib/dssi path, I realised I was down
a blind alley and it still git not work. So I had to did a bit deeper
and discovered two things.

1. ubuntustudio-menu is installing a hexter.desktop file, so my changes
to the desktop file in the hexter package will be overridden anyway.

2. It is not the path that is wrong. The Exec line in the desktop file from the
Debian hexter package does not work because the asterisk is not correctly
expanded to the correct path. It needs to be executed via a shell command:
Exec=sh -c 'jack-dssi-host /usr/lib/*/dssi/hexter.so'

I will fix the Hexter desktop file via Debian & a sync, and drop the
Hexter desktop file from ubuntustudio-menu.

** Also affects: ubuntustudio-menu (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: ubuntustudio-menu (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1867437] [NEW] installer does not allow for encypted dual boot installation

2020-03-14 Thread Chris Ward
Public bug reported:

I want to install Ubuntu as dual boot alongside a RedHat Enterprise 7.7 system.
Both systems need LUKS encryption, i.e. with /boot unencrypted but / and /home
encrypted.
I installed RedHat first; that installed as I wanted. Then I installed Ubuntu
20.04 development branch .
The Ubuntu installer did not offer an option for encryption.
Also, when the Ubuntu installer completed, there was no option in the grub menu
to boot the RedHat system.

I have disabled proposed updates, completely uninstalled kernel 5.3.0-42 and
installed yours again.
I was able to boot this time, but the problem is still there - suspend hangs.

[Bug 1867438] Crash report cannot be processed

2020-03-14 Thread Apport retracing service
Thank you for your report!

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate a useful symbolic stack trace). This
might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on your system
at the time of the report:

outdated debug symbol package for gvfs: package version 1.44.0-1ubuntu1 dbgsym
version 1.43.92-1ubuntu1
outdated debug symbol package for gvfs-libs: package version 1.44.0-1ubuntu1
dbgsym version 1.43.92-1ubuntu1

Please upgrade your system to the latest package versions. If you still
encounter the crash, please file a new report.

Thank you for your understanding, and sorry for the inconvenience!
