[Bug 1750059] Re: snaps appear broken when /var/lib/snapd is a zfs dataset
The problem is this becomes quite breakable when snaps get updated and all. The mount units are specific to a snap version. I was thinking of the following workaround (to test the basic principle). I could create a mount unit for /var/lib/snapd. That should tick all boxes: it should be taken into account by systemd in the mount hierarchy, it just needs the root filesystem to work (in my case) and that is mounted in the initrd, it should not break zfs-mount.service, and the mount command provides zfs compatibility via zfsutil. Still a manual workaround if it works, but nevertheless quite manageable indeed, and it has to be done only once. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1750059 Title: snaps appear broken when /var/lib/snapd is a zfs dataset To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/snapd/+bug/1750059/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1672297] Re: gnome-shell uses lots of memory, and grows over time
There is a memory leak generating window previews on gnome shell and since pressing the Super key generates windows previews the memory usage grows exponentially. For me Gnome Shell eats about 100-150 MB every day I leave it running. I tested this both on an Intel graphics machine and on a VM, in both Artful and Bionic. Both times clean install. 1. on a clean boot open System Monitor and Terminal side by side (or System Monitor and any other window) 2. press Super wait for the window preview and then press ESC (repeat this several times) 3. Observe the memory usage for Gnome Shell System Monitor grow You can also reproduce this by installing the Alternate Tab extension (https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/15/alternatetab/) which also generates window previews. 1. Alt+Tab between Terminal and System Monitor and watch the Gnome Shell memory usage grow every time. Another user on reddit also came to a similar conclusion: https://www.reddit.com/r/gnome/comments/7teono/possible_fix_to_improve_gnome_lag/ Effectively gnome shell becomes unusable even on 8 GB of RAM after a week of usage. I solve the issue by running ALT+F2 and 'r' every morning. [Bug 1535048] Re: i915 driver seems to cause system crash at random
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1554613 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1554613 Tried it and lo and behold, I got a crash eventually, although it took way longer in the regular usage scenario. I am not sure if the TLP settings are implemented correctly though. On one occasion i7z told me turbo mode was enabled although I disabled it n TLP settings.. That was when I saw the crash happen. I then manually disabled turbo mode " echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo" after which it showed that it was indeed disabled. No clue as to why this was the case. Another thing I notice is that when I configure it to use : CPU_MIN_PERF_ON_AC=100 CPU_MAX_PERF_ON_AC=100 CPU_MIN_PERF_ON_BAT=0 CPU_MAX_PERF_ON_BAT=100 I expect it to change operatig mode when I plug or unplug the power cable. I does not however, as i7z reveals. Seems like it sustains the mode that was to be chosen based on the situation at boot time. It is not modified during runtime. All in all I am hoping to discover that effective deactivation of turbo mode might be the fix for me. I don't believe my situation is a duplicate of bug #1554613. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1535048 Title: i915 driver seems to cause system crash at random To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libdrm/+bug/1535048/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1751230] [NEW] libc_bin package broken
Public bug reported: After an upgrade, I got this problem: dpkg: error processing package libc-bin (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 139 During several retries and trying several possible solutions I found on the internet, I have seen this as well: Segmentation fault This bug was reported in earlier versions of Ubuntu (as far back as 2011). None of the suggestions worked - they included: apt -f install dpkg --configure -a apt autoremove apt autoclean apt clean One solution suggested to remove the broken package, but that would have meant breaking Ubuntu. I created the following a workaround: Download the deb file (libc-bin_2.23-0ubuntu10_amd64.deb) from ubuntu package web site (https://packages.ubuntu.com) and save it in /tmp. Trying to install this deb will not work. Extract the contents into an empty folder (e.g. /tmp/fix). With mc (midnight commander) this is pretty easy, but here are some commands that might help. mkdir -p /tmp/fix/DEBIAN cd /tmp/fix ar x ../libc-bin_2.23-0ubuntu10_amd64.deb tar -xf data.tar.gz cd /tmp/fix/DEBIAN tar -xf ../control.tar.gz cd /tmp rm control.tar.gz rm data.tar.gx In the end, you need to have etc, sbin, usr and DEBIAN folders in /tmp/fix. If you used mc, you might have INFO and INSTALL - you can delete them. Move DEBIAN/postinst to some other place (e.g. /tmp) Now rebuild the package without the postinst script. cd /tmp dpkg --build /tmp/fix You should now have package called build.deb in /tmp. You need to rename it, so use this command: mv /tmp/build.deb /tmp/fix/libc-bin_2.23-0ubuntu10_amd64.deb Now install this file: dpkg -i tmp/fix/libc-bin_2.23-0ubuntu10_amd64.deb (it should not cause any problems) Now run the script that was supposed to be run by the installer: bash /tmp/postinst Ok, so now you can continue working until the problem has been sorted out. I attached the repackaged deb - please verify your architecture and version before using it. [Bug 1751005] Re: libreoffice cannot open a document not within $HOME
I was running into the same issue after the latest upgrade of 17.10 and libreoffice, and I tried a couple of things that have both failed. Correction - 4.4.0-116-generic does not solve the problem. The server was up for over an hour before hanging. As it doesn't usually have a console, I can't be certain of the cause of the hang. [Bug 1750884] Re: [2.4, bionic] /etc/resolv.conf not configured correctly in Bionic, leads to no DNS resolution
If we don't know, then maybe things should be passed to netplan, in a way for it to generate global resolved config? as in, create /run/systemd/resolved.conf.d/global.conf [Resolve] DNS=999.999.999.999 (Maybe FallbackDNS=, if we want it to leave DNS= setting for users to tweak) Or whatnot, which should then appear in systemd-resolve --status, Global section which is applied as a fallback if an interface does not have a per-interface DNS settings. Could somebody try dropping dns configs out of netplan file that is generated, rerun apply, check that systemd-resolve --status has nothing, then add above drop-in with the right dns server, restart resolved, and check if that picks up a global DNS server, and if network resolution works correctly? *globally* I also wonder, if .network / .link files should have an ability to specify Global DNS settings for resolved... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1750884 Title: [2.4, bionic] /etc/resolv.conf not configured correctly in Bionic, leads to no DNS resolution To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-init/+bug/1750884/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1746299] Re: update makedumpfile tool version to v1.6.3
Sorry, but that version number is not sufficient. It cannot distinguish between package versions, which might contain patches? When you give a makedumpfile version, can you use dpkg -s makedumpfile? Also, I need to know which kernel version you dumped with that. And if crash could successfully load it. It might be that makedumpfile dumps (though incorrectly) a newer kernel, but, then, crash won't be able to analyze it. Can you test that? And, please, test the makedumpfile from the ppa. Thanks. Unfortunately nothing points to the actual issue. I'd recommend to start with the statement already recommended by the error message. $ journalctl -xe On upgrading a service this service has to be restarted to pick up the fixes. Rather rarely a real issue occurs that the newer version does e.g. fail with the formerly working configuration. But most of the time what happens is, that a service was installed, but stays unconfigured or experimented with but left in a broken state. Now on any update of the related packages that service has to be restarted, but since its config is incomplete/faulty it fails to restart. Therefore the update of that package has to consider itself incomplete. Depending on your particular case there are two solutions: - either remove the offending package if you don't want to continue using it. - Or if you do want to keep it please fix the configuration so that re-starting the service will work. There isn't really enough information here for a developer to confirm this issue is a bug, or to begin working on it. Further since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem, rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I'm marking this bug as Incomplete. If indeed this is a local configuration problem, you can find pointers to get help for this sort of problem here: http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community Or if you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem, explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New. ** Changed in: tomcat8 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1751128 Title: package tomcat8 8.0.32-1ubuntu1.5 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tomcat8/+bug/1751128/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1750989] Re: [Ubuntu 18.04][I2S][ethtool] -k options says 'Cannot get device udp-fragmentation-offload settings: Operation not supported'
Hi, this is interesting. Thanks for the ping. Note: this needs no PPC or any other special arch, a VM guest is enough to test it. Up until very recently we were still on kernel 4.13 where this did not occur. With 4.13 - starting both off: $ sudo ethtool -k ens3 | egrep 'udp-fragmentation-offload|generic-receive-offload' udp-fragmentation-offload: off generic-receive-offload: off $ sudo ethtool -K ens3 gro on $ sudo ethtool -k ens3 | egrep 'udp-fragmentation-offload|generic-receive-offload' udp-fragmentation-offload: off generic-receive-offload: on $ sudo ethtool -K ens3 ufo on $ sudo ethtool -k ens3 | egrep 'udp-fragmentation-offload|generic-receive-offload' udp-fragmentation-offload: on generic-receive-offload: on So all was just fine. ethtool release is rather tied to kernel version releases for just this reason. But there was no update (yet) and we are on 4.11 for now. Due to that the https://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/806563/ is missing still. It is important that this is ONLY a warning and things work just fine. Obviously setting UFO will fail, but setting GRO works (aside the annoying error messages). So GRO is not functionally affected, it is just the older ethtool that tries to probe the related UFO and fails on that. This is also the reason that upstream ONLY disabled the warning (but kept all else). Therefore on 4.15 it behaves like this: $ sudo ethtool -k ens3 | egrep 'udp-fragmentation-offload|generic-receive-offload' Cannot get device udp-fragmentation-offload settings: Operation not supported udp-fragmentation-offload: off generic-receive-offload: off $ sudo ethtool -K ens3 gro on Cannot get device udp-fragmentation-offload settings: Operation not supported Cannot get device udp-fragmentation-offload settings: Operation not supported $ echo $? 0 $ sudo ethtool -k ens3 | egrep 'udp-fragmentation-offload|generic-receive-offload' Cannot get device udp-fragmentation-offload settings: Operation not supported udp-fragmentation-offload: off generic-receive-offload: on So other than the warning it worked. UFO doesn't of course. $ sudo ethtool -K ens3 ufo on Cannot get device udp-fragmentation-offload settings: Operation not supported Cannot change udp-fragmentation-offload Cannot get device udp-fragmentation-offload settings: Operation not supported Could not change any device features $ echo $? 1 $ sudo ethtool -k ens3 | egrep 'udp-fragmentation-offload|generic-receive-offload' Cannot get device udp-fragmentation-offload settings: Operation not supported udp-fragmentation-offload: off generic-receive-offload: on That said we have two options now: 1. we can pick the change from upstream and be good in regard to this bug. This can also be done post Feature Freeze as it is a bug fix. 2. We actually should - as we did with iproute2 recently - tie ethtool versions to kernel uploads. It is so dependent on the actual kernel, and might even more special for kernel backports, hwe kernels and so on. For example this will trigger on Xenial with a 4.15 HWE as well at some point. I'll try to look into the doability of an ethtool 4.15 right now, but would like to ask the kernel Team to (eventually) adopt ethtool to their list of "kernelversion-related-uploads" -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1750989 Title: [Ubuntu 18.04][I2S][ethtool] -k options says 'Cannot get device udp- fragmentation-offload settings: Operation not supported' To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-power-systems/+bug/1750989/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1751225] Re: apt update hangs when repository url is redirect url
OK, so I need to dig a bit further into this. I think if I move the if I break things elsewhere. IIRC, I added the if that early because, when apt received a redirect with Content-Length: 0, it started hanging, and that fixed it. But maybe it breaks some other stuff now. ** Changed in: apt (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1751225 Title: apt update hangs when repository url is redirect url To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/1751225/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1751225] Re: apt update hangs when repository url is redirect url
It's working fine in bionic, but I can confirm it failed in xenial. ** Changed in: apt (Ubuntu Artful) Status: Triaged => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1751225 Title: apt update hangs when repository url is redirect url To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/1751225/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
