[Bug 485084] Re: Ubuntu (Win) key cannot be programed to open Ubuntu Menu

2009-11-19 Thread Steve McGrath
This is for the same reason that Ctrl, Alt, or Shift cannot be assigned
to an action by themselves. The Windows, or "Super" key is generally
considered a modifier just like the aforementioned Ctrl, Alt, and etc.

On the other hand, Windows does manage to use the Win key to open the
start menu, while still retaining its use as a modifier in shortcuts
such as Win+R, Win+D, etc. So perhaps this could be considered a
wishlist item.

[Bug 485167] Re: There should be a eclipse.ini file in user's home directory

2009-11-19 Thread Niels Thykier
Hi

I agree with you that eclipse ought to have "per-user" configurations
and even if eclipse does not support it out of the box, it can be done
with just (shell) scripting[1]. Nevertheless, we recently received a
similar question on the Debian-java list [2], where a maintainer wanted
to add an argument to eclipse. He/She also suggested the "per-user"
configuration - but this would require that the user manually edited
their own configuration, when they installed this package.

Therefore I think we need something like an /etc/eclipse/eclipse.ini.d/
folder as well and a script that can sanely merge a couple of
eclipse.ini files. Possible with an eclipserc that determines if the
user wants /etc/eclipse/eclipse.ini.d/ parsed.

The importance wishlist (at least in Debian) means that it is considered
a feature request (or a suggestion); personally I think this will be
fixed (if left on its own) the next time I am stuck with another problem
and out of frustration need to fix something to feel progress.

~Niels

[1] I would probably not use a shell script here due to how shells
handles variables (especially when passed to another application)

Re: [Bug 438536] Re: Notifications should show up closer to top right

2009-11-19 Thread Waldir Leoncio
So maybe you could limit it to five simultaneous messages, or something.
Just yesterday I went through this annoying situation, when I was chatting
with a friend on Pidgin. We were sending messages to each other on a really
quick pace, and notify-osd wasn't picking up. Then he left and almost a
minute after we were done chatting I was still getting bubbles with sent
messages.

2009-11-19 Thread cdwillis
@Cyberkilla, what do you mean "updating each individual application to
use "GTKStatusIcon" (?) instead may work"? I'm using Banshee 1.6 Beta 2
(1.5.1) from the PPA and even though the icon itself has transparency
when Banshee adds it to the notification area I still get the tray icon
with the clashing background. I was hoping this would be a simple
workaround.

run F-spot import from that.

Is any user bothered by notification spam? I mean how often do you get a
notification anyway?
And those are pretty bad examples, btw.
A pop-up I have to click to make it go away, telling me I have low disk
space - _that's_ what I consider spamming.
And why do we need to have volume and brightness in the notification
area anyway?
What was exactly wrong with the behaviour up until intrepid?

[Bug 472687] Re: blender 2.5 regression - cpu flatlines at 100% on default scene

2009-11-19 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
workaround 1 failed:
After leaving blender running for about one hour blender started to use up 100%
of my cpu again. The only thing new is that I now had two blender processes and
together they now used 100% of both my cores. Never seen that before. Might be
because the scene was different or because of changes to the parallelization
capabilities in this new revision of blender. I do not think it is related to
the (failed) workaround.

I have now compiled blender with
WITH_BF_OPENAL = False
added to my user-config.py

[Bug 420915] Re: ubuntu karmic alpha 4 wireless keyboard not recognised on grub menu and PC waits indefinitely for menu choice

2009-11-19 Thread Jakob Schiøtz
I hereby withdraw my previous comment. It was the BIOS. The bios on my
ThinkPad T60 was upgraded a few days ago, that obviously broke USB
keyboard support :-(

Sorry about the noise!

[Bug 461335] Re: Even though I tell cairo-dock to not function as a taskbar, it still does in some ways...

2009-11-19 Thread Fabounet
well I'm sorry but you didn't reply for 3 weeks so I thought the problem was
over.
If you deactivate the taskbar in the Dock, without restarting your gnome-panel,
windows will of course continue to minimize to the dock, because windows are
bound to a position on the screen, and not to the panel or the dock.

Morevoer, it's strictly impossible for the dock to set the position of
the minimized window if it does not act as a taskbar (you need at least
the X ID of the window to do that, and the dock doesn't record them if
the taskbar is not active)

So I maintain this bug invalid, except if you can provide more details
and a way to reproduce it (because I just don't have this issue on my
PC).

[Bug 284212] Re: VPN connection fails: "unable to find valid VPN secrets" (auth dialog crash when secrets exist)

2009-11-19 Thread Lando Nachtmann
I experience another variation of this problem:

My setup is: Karmic (i386 netbook remix, fresh install, fully updated),
vpnc-plugin, password-based VPN (user and group passwords saved via
network-manager)

- On first connection attempt after a boot everything is okay
- After a disconnect (manually or netbook goes asleep, does not matter) it will
refuse to reconnect until I reboot the machine
In that case I get this 'No VPN secrets!' warning in syslog and all password
fields in the network-manager GUI are empty. The passwords reappear after a
reboot.

[Bug 480939] Re: karmic no sound Intel 82801DB (ICH4) AC'97 Audio Controller

2009-11-19 Thread Willem Ligtenberg
OK, just tested with 2.6.32-rc7 from the mainline kernels.
And the problem still persists. However, this might be caused by the acpi=off
kernel option I use, to have a not freezing X.
(See:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/476817)
Because I also booted the new kernel without this acpi=off option, then my X
froze, but I was able to play music with mplayer.
However, using the same kernel with acpi=off won't play any music.

[Bug 476817] Re: [i855] [karmic] X freezes with intel 855GM videocard

2009-11-19 Thread Willem Ligtenberg
OK, I did try just upgrading the kernel, which didn't help.
I have tried 2.6.32-rc7 from the mainline kernels. However, the description of
xorg-edgers worries me. This the laptop that I work on, so I rather have a non
freezing X, without sound, 3D acceleration, than a non working laptop.
Could I just add the ppa to my sources and update the packages? And if that
fails, roll them back without any harm? Or is it more difficult? (If it is this
easy, and I will always be able to revert to the status I am in now, I will
give it a try)

[Bug 420985] Re: pidgin cpu usage high

2009-11-19 Thread Havier
I ran into this problem too.
Seems to be in the gnutls plugin. First it happened yesterday evening. I use
Ubuntu 8.04, todday I have updated my pidgin to the newest version. I have
removed the ssl-gnutls plugin, and the problem does not appear any more. But I
also cant connect to MSN, because it needs ssl support.
I start it with 'pidgin --debug', it runs normally, until a message appears
similar to the following:

(09:31:22) gnutls: receive failed: A TLS packet with unexpected length was
received.
(09:31:22) soap: read: Input/output error
(09:31:22) xmlnode: Error parsing xml file: Document is empty

[Bug 485224] [NEW] Thunderbird saves double attachment file name endings on FAT32 and NTFS

2009-11-19 Thread Christoph
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

When saving attachments to a FAT32 or an NTFS partition, Thunderbird duplicates
file name endings. E.g. it saves "draft.doc" as "draft.doc" on EXT3/EXT4, but
as "draft.doc.doc" on FAT32/NTFS.
I have my Thunderbird profile on a Linux/Windows shared FAT32 partition, but I
also checked it with a temporary profile on the main EXT4 partition. So the bug
really seems to be in the portion of the software that saves attachments to
disk.

Kind of a workaround:
If anyone needs a workaround for large numbers of attachments, here's a very
primitive one:
* go to the folder where the double named attachments are
* $ rename -v 's/(\.\w{3}\w?){2}$/$1/' *
This looks for 3 or 4 character long file name endings that are duplicated and
removes one copy.

I saved this single line 'script' in a file and installed it to
/usr/local/bin as an executable ($ sudo install yourfilename
/usr/local/bin). Now I can just cd to the concerned folder and say my
magic word (the name of the script), voilà.

The 800x600 choice was not a good one , although default and 1280x1024 worked
well.

I have several linux versions installed and win too. The most recent Ubuntu ,
9.10, is on the sata drive and win was on the pata drive. Pata has MBR, so
similar setup to those above. Previous experience with booting problems because
of early SATA mobo led me to experiment with swapping setting in device.map.
This led to further issues as I had set win as default and it failed to load.
It was vi for me again and a bit of a struggle to fight my way back.
I am impressed by the ability of Grub 2 to find and build multiboot access ( as
I renamed the config files to force it to work from scratch. It got a good list
up and chose better settings than I sometimes did. It found five oses, some
with several kernels. This reached a max of about thirty entries.
It was about then that I googled about the delay and found bug reported. (That
which should be done first !)

The normal time for the disk thrashing is about two minutes before the Grub
selection screen comes up.
Seeing the suggestion above, I removed one, then both optical disk drives and
replaced them. This did not favorably affect grub.

As this is an aging rig, I thought it might be of interest.

BTW, I have network a Celeron box with 10 g HD 133 mhz, 33 DMA, running
Ubuntu 910. Installed from alt cd while it had 128mb mem. Took about 2
hours but installed sucessfully. It struggled to even open a task so
added 256 mb and it is quite usable. Has just under 6 g partition with
you know who next door, dual boot with Grub 2. Works great

Look forward to early resolution of bug. It is going to be a great
loader.

[Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled

2009-11-19 Thread krona
I hope it's not rejected. I understand the desire for the correct
solution, and on the face of it you could argue that the fglrx driver
should not have slow performance with the existing xorg code, however I
think we should be pragmatic given the facts. Lots of people want to use
the fglrx driver and want to use desktop effects. It's not nice to do
driver specific hacks but looking at it another way it's a bit like
having having to deal with different driver capabilities to provide
useable results, something that's not unusual in the real world of
software on any platform. I might be wrong but it doesn't seem that the
conditional patch would have lots of negative effects on many other
clients, I suppose with extensive testing the patch could show some
other issues. I guess the days of manually patching your own Linux
system are not over. I think I would have to get the latest source next
time and apply the patch and make sure I don't make the same mistake
with the package version!

[Bug 485228] [NEW] No keyboard shortcuts with compiz launched

2009-11-19 Thread Louis Opter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Hello,

I'm on a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 with gnome and the ATI fglrx (on a
Radeon HD 4850 RV770) driver installed with the Ubuntu assistant.

When compiz is started (which is done default since I have installed the
fglrx driver). I loose any keyboard shortcut.

It means that :
 - I can't drag my window with alt + click;
 - I can't drag my cube with ctrl + alt + click;
 - etc.

Of course, the needed plugins are activated and correctly configured. By
the way, the gnome shortcuts doesn't works either.

Nobody was able to help me on #ubuntu and #compiz.

I use metacity --replace on startup to workaround the problem.

Best Regards

[Bug 415023] Re: brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100

2009-11-19 Thread Dmitri Petros
ozzyboy, have you tried disabling kernel mode setting in grub? That
seems to be the preferred workaround in the release notes.

Assuming you have grub 2 (check synaptic - it'll be listed as 1.97 or
something like that) -

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
type your password
add "nomodeset" within the quotes at the end of the "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX" line.
save
close gedit
sudo update-grub

and you should be right.

However, the screen might still flicker when you use the Fn F* keys to
change brightness. I find the best workaround for that is to add the
brightness panel applet by right clicking on your top panel, clicking
"add to panel", then adding the brightness applet. Then use the applet
to change brightness, not the Fn F* keys.

If you still having problems with suspend, it may be do with bug 435352.

[Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855

2009-11-19 Thread kalessin
Update: I backed out xorg-edgers from my machine. Non-edgers driver does
indeed work without KMS, and acpi=off seems to stop the freezes.
nomodeset has no apparent effect.

Summary:
-freezes with nomodeset
-does _not_ freeze with acpi=off

Problems with acpi=off:
-no sound
-no wifi
-no power management
-possible other irq-related problems (since acpi is used to configure the
hardware interrupts nowadays)

I tested with current distribution kernel (2.6.31-15 I think), but
mainline kernel seems to behave more or less the same in this regard.

Note: additional tests by Andrea could actually be of interest, since he
runs the same hardware (Asus M2400N). My device has upgraded wifi
(ipw2200), but that should not matter.

BTW I have to concur with Andreas opinion: the fact that the current
Intel drivers have such severe problems on older hardware and no
developer ever seemed to deem it necessary to maintain stable support
for existing machines is quite upsetting. I have currently only two
options: to either downgrade to Hardy (at least until support is
dropped) or to throw away perfectly good hardware. Or is there a
possibility to disable the HAL detection of the graphics hardware, thus
forcing the machine to vesa graphics or something? That would be at
least a little help (I don't exactly need hardware acceleration on that
machine).

[Bug 416815] Re: no music

2009-11-19 Thread delvalle26
The Ubuntu package of meritous-data is missing the music.

Meritous homepage
http://asceai.net/meritous/

Grab 1.2 source tarball.

Inside there is a folder called dat
In there are folders a, d, i, and m.

In Ubuntu, /usr/share/games/meritous
Has the folders a, d, and i...
m is missing.

Even copying the m folder contents to usr/share/games/meritous/m/
Does not provide music.

Looking at the source code from the homepage, (audio.c) it looks for
things in relative path dat/

So I'm guessing whoever packaged the tarball for ubuntu modified it to
point to usr/share/games/meritous for sound effects and everything else
but omitted the music? (This is just a guess though.)

Workaround:
Long story short, extract tarball:

cd meritous_v12_src
make
./meritous

Enjoy the tracked music goodness in-game.

P.S. If you use audacious or have the right plugins for gstreamer, you
can listen to it whenever...

[Bug 478031] Re: Mouse buttons not registering clicks correctly

2009-11-19 Thread peter
It also happens here, Dell Precision M4400 running Ubuntu 9.10 (problem was
already present in 9.04).
xorg version is 1:7.4+3ubuntu7.

It only happens a few times a day, difficult to reproduce in xev.
I am mostly working with the mouse stick and its related mouse buttons. At some
point, the mouse pointer does not react on clicks from these buttons any more.
What mostly helps is pressing the (left) button associated with the touchpad.
There seems to be some interference between the buttons associated with the
stick and those associated with the touchpad. In some cases, however, only a
switch to the console via CTRL+ALT+F1 or even a restart of X helps.

[Bug 452175] Re: Random segfaults when using ld.so explicitly to start a program

2009-11-19 Thread Ari Kauppi
I took a look at the diff from -2.3 to -3.4. I guess this is related to
changelog entry:

[ Kees Cook ]
* SAUCE: [x86] implement cs-limit nx-emulation for ia32
- LP: #369978

Kees, do you know if the nx-emulation could cause this?

[Bug 361370] Re: Link isn't created

2009-11-19 Thread David Prieto
I might have just discovered something relevant.

As you know, when you change a note's title the text in links pointing
to it change. If I have the sentence "Thomas Jefferson wrote the
American [L]Declaration of Independence[/L]", where the text between
[L][/L] points to another note:

1 - If I change the note's title to "the Declaration of Independence",
the original sentence would change too: "Thomas Jefferson wrote the
American [L]the Declaration of Independence[/L]", where an additional
"the" has been added.

2 - If instead I remove the word "American", the link disappears:
"Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence".

3 - However, if I remove the word "American" AND then I change the
note's title to "the Declaration of Independence", the original sentence
reads: "Thomas Jefferson wrote [L]the Declaration of Independence[/L]"

That is: instead of adding an additional "the", Tomboy recognises the
article that was already there and adds it to the link. I am pretty sure
that this article recognition is probably intentional, but related to
the described problem.

[Bug 485234] [NEW] linux-image

2009-11-19 Thread X3
Public bug reported:

This HAPPENS WITH ANY KARMIC KERNEL EVEN 2.6.31.1
ProblemType: Bug
Well this is really silly from a stable supposedly release that has been tested
for months. AND has been reported FIXED on Bug #296478 I'm here to tell you its
not fixed, does not work, period.
uname -r is 2.6.31-15-generic KARMIC KOALA 9.10
I have tried this with default files as system is installed with minimal karmic
install I get error FATAL: Error inserting coretemp
(/lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/drivers/hwmon/coretemp.ko): Invalid
module format and I have tried it with the description below. FATAL ERRORS
EXIST.
dmesg outputs this [ 4563.803572] coretemp: no symbol version for module_layout
WTH??
I have this issue and further more on jaunty kernel 2.6.28-16 modprobe coretemp
worked perfectly after I replaced sensors-detect in /usr/sbin/ with this file
http://www.lm-sensors.org/svn/lm-sensors/trunk/prog/detect/sensors-detect chmod
755 this file and added a pre-patched coretemp.ko from
http://mabene.icomedias.com/coretemp.ko and place it in its path which varies
on kernel name but is in my instance
/lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/drivers/hwmon/ obviously I renamed the
existing files by doing e.g. filename.extension-orig. JUST FOR TESTING PURPOSES.
This is my sensors-detect output The modules load during that so it has to work
but in no obvious way.
http://pastebin.com/f2ae9c41b
LM-SENSORS is Version: 1:3.1.1-4~ppa0
sensors -s outputs No sensors found!
Make sure you loaded all the kernel drivers you need.
Try sensors-detect to find out which these are.
modprobe fails with errors as described.
doing /etc/init.d/lm-sensors start or service lm-sensors start outputs *
Setting sensors limits [fail] should say ok
when I do # modprobe coretemp or # modprobe -v coretemp I get the same silly
error FATAL: Error inserting coretemp
(/lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/drivers/hwmon/coretemp.ko): Invalid
module format.
This worked fine in Jaunty kernels with no issues in EITHER CASE and all my CPU
temps were posted when doing # sensors
Doing sensors-detect is able to see/load modules which are coretemp,
ic2-nforce2, ic2-dev I cannot load any of them using modprobe ic2-nforce2,
ic2-dev it says FATAL: Module ic2_dev not found.
makes anyone wonder if bug reports are addressed or even read in some cases.
silly bugs are allowed to travel down for years without being fixed in some
cases.
ok I get it its all free and ppl do it in their spare time they have
families/jobs/live like most of us do well I do anywho... just dont get it why
this is reported and not fixed. or when ppl just add it as a duplicate of e.g.
Bug #296478 and so sometimes even having dozens of 'duplicate' bugs that when u
read have nothing in relation in the majority of cases. As a obvious result it
gets ignored. So much for support.
The only kernel which fixes this is the 2.6.32rc7 which I have downloaded from
mainline for testing. though the system is only accessible via ssh and stays at
blinking cursor on machine.

@audio  -  nice -10
@audio - memlock 50 #(à adapter; pour une valeur sans limite

[Bug 415023] Re: brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100

2009-11-19 Thread Dmitri Petros
ozzyboy, just reread your comment at 152. Some of your problems are
definitely to do with bug 435352.

The problem there is that the video camera drivers seem to have some
kind of conflict with the usb drivers.

There's no ideal solution, but as a workaround you can rebuild your
kernel with some changes (there are some hard to follow instructions at
435352).

Or, if you don't need the camera, you can just disable it either by
turning it off with Fn F6 or by doing the following:

sudo gedit /etc/modprode.d/blacklist.conf
enter password
add "blacklist uvcvideo" to an empty line (maybe add a "#blacklisting uvcvideo
to enable usb ports" line as well so you remember what you've done)
save
close gedit
restart

And you should have your usb ports but not your camera.

[Bug 297215] Re: m-a doesn't cope well with kernel subflavors

2009-11-19 Thread Gaurav Malhotra
I encountered this issue on a minimal install (the virtual flavor) of
Karmic amd64 on ESXi4. "m-a build open-vm" creates a deb that
(incorrectly) depends on linux-modules-2.6.31-14-server and linux-
image-2.6.31-14-server.

I used "dpkg -i --force-depends" to ignore the dependencies and install
the package.

Seems like somethink with the audio input of this card and Pulseaudio is going

[Bug 485240] [NEW] When zooming from 2-pages view to 1-page view, displayed page jumps away

2009-11-19 Thread Romano Giannetti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Try it:

open a long document, show it in two (side-by-side) page mode, browse to
for example page 32. page 32 and 33 are displayed in the window.

Now switch to one-page, or (it's the same) use the zoom control causing
a switch to a 1-page view.

The displayed page jumps to page 16.

I do not think this is the expected behavior.

And a red herring it was, indeed. I had one of those freezes just a couple of
hours later. I was transferring MP3 files from an external EXT4 HD to a FAT32
USB pen-drive through Karmic main HD (in EXT4 as well, of course). Music got
stuck between two notes, and system became unresponsive. I confess that
whenever it happens, the feeling is similar to the one I had with Windows' Blue
Screen Of Death, and it isn't pleasant at all.

I remember reading somewhere that EXT4 file systems had some issues with
FAT and NTFS file systems. I reformatted the pen drive in EXT4, just in
case. I don't know what else to think.

Then might it not be wrong to file the bug under pulseaudio, if we don't even
know what causes it exactly? If the solution you proposed didn't bring the
expected result, and everybody seems to keep experiencing freezes under Karmic,
maybe the culprits have yet to be identified.

[Bug 446889] Re: Linksys WUSB54GC v3 (ID 1737:0077) doesn't work

2009-11-19 Thread AartCK
Encryption works if the router is set to WPA (not WPA + WPA2) and the
dongle is set to WPA + WPA2 with NetworkManager. In NetworkManager there
is no possibility to set encryption to WPA. I have not tested WEP.

Hot-plugging the dongle does not work. After plugging in the dongle I
have to reboot to get the dongle working, See #28 for the error messages
I get when hot-plugging.

[Bug 482439] Re: Moved .odt file to the desktop not visible if ooo thumbnailer installed meanwhile and thumbnail not generated yet

2009-11-19 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Thanks Sebastien. Okay, I made a report upstream. Or actually, I added a
comment to an upstream bug report that seemed related.

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=599475

There seems to be different conditions that lead to invisible files /
directory accesses that do not end properly, when some thumbnails fail
to generate, for some reason.
