[Bug 485084] Re: Ubuntu (Win) key cannot be programed to open Ubuntu Menu
This is for the same reason that Ctrl, Alt, or Shift cannot be assigned to an action by themselves. The Windows, or "Super" key is generally considered a modifier just like the aforementioned Ctrl, Alt, and etc. On the other hand, Windows does manage to use the Win key to open the start menu, while still retaining its use as a modifier in shortcuts such as Win+R, Win+D, etc. So perhaps this could be considered a wishlist item. ** Package changed: yelp (Ubuntu) => gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) -- Ubuntu (Win) key cannot be programed to open Ubuntu Menu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/485084 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 485167] Re: There should be a eclipse.ini file in user's home directory
Hi I agree with you that eclipse ought to have "per-user" configurations and even if eclipse does not support it out of the box, it can be done with just (shell) scripting[1]. Nevertheless, we recently received a similar question on the Debian-java list [2], where a maintainer wanted to add an argument to eclipse. He/She also suggested the "per-user" configuration - but this would require that the user manually edited their own configuration, when they installed this package. Therefore I think we need something like an /etc/eclipse/eclipse.ini.d/ folder as well and a script that can sanely merge a couple of eclipse.ini files. Possible with an eclipserc that determines if the user wants /etc/eclipse/eclipse.ini.d/ parsed. The importance wishlist (at least in Debian) means that it is considered a feature request (or a suggestion); personally I think this will be fixed (if left on its own) the next time I am stuck with another problem and out of frustration need to fix something to feel progress. ~Niels [1] I would probably not use a shell script here due to how shells handles variables (especially when passed to another application) [2] http://lists.debian.org/debian-java/2009/11/msg00050.html -- There should be a eclipse.ini file in user's home directory https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/485167 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 438536] Re: Notifications should show up closer to top right
So maybe you could limit it to five simultaneous messages, or something. Just yesterday I went through this annoying situation, when I was chatting with a friend on Pidgin. We were sending messages to each other on a really quick pace, and notify-osd wasn't picking up. Then he left and almost a minute after we were done chatting I was still getting bubbles with sent messages. [Bug 461335] Re: Even though I tell cairo-dock to not function as a taskbar, it still does in some ways...
well I'm sorry but you didn't reply for 3 weeks so I thought the problem was over. If you deactivate the taskbar in the Dock, without restarting your gnome-panel, windows will of course continue to minimize to the dock, because windows are bound to a position on the screen, and not to the panel or the dock. Morevoer, it's strictly impossible for the dock to set the position of the minimized window if it does not act as a taskbar (you need at least the X ID of the window to do that, and the dock doesn't record them if the taskbar is not active) So I maintain this bug invalid, except if you can provide more details and a way to reproduce it (because I just don't have this issue on my PC). -- Even though I tell cairo-dock to not function as a taskbar, it still does in some ways... https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/461335 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 480939] Re: karmic no sound Intel 82801DB (ICH4) AC'97 Audio Controller
OK, just tested with 2.6.32-rc7 from the mainline kernels. And the problem still persists. However, this might be caused by the acpi=off kernel option I use, to have a not freezing X. (See: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/476817) Because I also booted the new kernel without this acpi=off option, then my X froze, but I was able to play music with mplayer. However, using the same kernel with acpi=off won't play any music. -- karmic no sound Intel 82801DB (ICH4) AC'97 Audio Controller https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/480939 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 476817] Re: [i855] [karmic] X freezes with intel 855GM videocard
OK, I did try just upgrading the kernel, which didn't help. I have tried 2.6.32-rc7 from the mainline kernels. However, the description of xorg-edgers worries me. This the laptop that I work on, so I rather have a non freezing X, without sound, 3D acceleration, than a non working laptop. Could I just add the ppa to my sources and update the packages? And if that fails, roll them back without any harm? Or is it more difficult? [Bug 420985] Re: pidgin cpu usage high
I ran into this problem too. Seems to be in the gnutls plugin. First it happened yesterday evening. I use Ubuntu 8.04, todday I have updated my pidgin to the newest version. I have removed the ssl-gnutls plugin, and the problem does not appear any more. But I also cant connect to MSN, because it needs ssl support. I start it with 'pidgin --debug', it runs normally, until a message appears similar to the following: (09:31:22) gnutls: receive failed: A TLS packet with unexpected length was received. [Bug 485224] [NEW] Thunderbird saves double attachment file name endings on FAT32 and NTFS
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: thunderbird When saving attachments to a FAT32 or an NTFS partition, Thunderbird duplicates file name endings. E.g. it saves "draft.doc" as "draft.doc" on EXT3/EXT4, but as "draft.doc.doc" on FAT32/NTFS. I have my Thunderbird profile on a Linux/Windows shared FAT32 partition, but I also checked it with a temporary profile on the main EXT4 partition. So the bug really seems to be in the portion of the software that saves attachments to disk. Kind of a workaround: If anyone needs a workaround for large numbers of attachments, here's a very primitive one: * go to the folder where the double named attachments are * $ rename -v 's/(\.\w{3}\w?){2}$/$1/' * This looks for 3 or 4 character long file name endings that are duplicated and removes one copy. I saved this single line 'script' in a file and installed it to /usr/local/bin as an executable ($ sudo install yourfilename /usr/local/bin). Now I can just cd to the concerned folder and say my magic word (the name of the script), voilà. [Bug 420933] Re: Current grub-pc takes several minutes to show menu
Two weeks after upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 - which went smoothly - installed Grub 2. This took a while to settle down. The 800x600 choice was not a good one , although default and 1280x1024 worked well. I have several linux versions installed and win too. The most recent Ubuntu , 9.10, is on the sata drive and win was on the pata drive. Pata has MBR, so similar setup to those above. Previous experience with booting problems because of early SATA mobo led me to experiment with swapping setting in device.map. This led to further issues as I had set win as default and it failed to load. It was vi for me again and a bit of a struggle to fight my way back. I am impressed by the ability of Grub 2 to find and build multiboot access ( as I renamed the config files to force it to work from scratch. It got a good list up and chose better settings than I sometimes did. It found five oses, some with several kernels. This reached a max of about thirty entries. It was about then that I googled about the delay and found bug reported. (That which should be done first !) The normal time for the disk thrashing is about two minutes before the Grub selection screen comes up. Seeing the suggestion above, I removed one, then both optical disk drives and replaced them. This did not favorably affect grub. As this is an aging rig, I thought it might be of interest. BTW, I have network a Celeron box with 10 g HD 133 mhz, 33 DMA, running Ubuntu 910. Installed from alt cd while it had 128mb mem. Took about 2 hours but installed sucessfully. It struggled to even open a task so added 256 mb and it is quite usable. Has just under 6 g partition with you know who next door, dual boot with Grub 2. Works great Look forward to early resolution of bug. It is going to be a great loader. [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled
I hope it's not rejected. I understand the desire for the correct solution, and on the face of it you could argue that the fglrx driver should not have slow performance with the existing xorg code, however I think we should be pragmatic given the facts. Lots of people want to use the fglrx driver and want to use desktop effects. It's not nice to do driver specific hacks but looking at it another way it's a bit like having having to deal with different driver capabilities to provide useable results, something that's not unusual in the real world of software on any platform. I might be wrong but it doesn't seem that the conditional patch would have lots of negative effects on many other clients, I suppose with extensive testing the patch could show some other issues. I guess the days of manually patching your own Linux system are not over. I think I would have to get the latest source next time and apply the patch and make sure I don't make the same mistake with the package version! -- [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/351186 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 415023] Re: brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100
ozzyboy, have you tried disabling kernel mode setting in grub? That seems to be the preferred workaround in the release notes. Assuming you have grub 2 (check synaptic - it'll be listed as 1.97 or something like that) - sudo gedit /etc/default/grub type your password add "nomodeset" within the quotes at the end of the "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX" line. save close gedit sudo update-grub and you should be right. However, the screen might still flicker when you use the Fn F* keys to change brightness. I find the best workaround for that is to add the brightness panel applet by right clicking on your top panel, clicking "add to panel", then adding the brightness applet. Then use the applet to change brightness, not the Fn F* keys. If you still having problems with suspend, it may be do with bug 435352. -- brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/415023 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdebase-workspace in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
[Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855
Update: I backed out xorg-edgers from my machine. Non-edgers driver does indeed work without KMS, and acpi=off seems to stop the freezes. nomodeset has no apparent effect. Summary: -freezes with nomodeset -does _not_ freeze with acpi=off Problems with acpi=off: -no sound -no wifi -no power management -possible other irq-related problems (since acpi is used to configure the hardware interrupts nowadays) I tested with current distribution kernel (2.6.31-15 I think), but mainline kernel seems to behave more or less the same in this regard. Note: additional tests by Andrea could actually be of interest, since he runs the same hardware (Asus M2400N). My device has upgraded wifi (ipw2200), but that should not matter. BTW I have to concur with Andreas opinion: the fact that the current Intel drivers have such severe problems on older hardware and no developer ever seemed to deem it necessary to maintain stable support for existing machines is quite upsetting. I have currently only two options: to either downgrade to Hardy (at least until support is dropped) or to throw away perfectly good hardware. Or is there a possibility to disable the HAL detection of the graphics hardware, thus forcing the machine to vesa graphics or something? That would be at least a little help (I don't exactly need hardware acceleration on that machine). -- [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/447892 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It also happens here, Dell Precision M4400 running Ubuntu 9.10 (problem was already present in 9.04). xorg version is 1:7.4+3ubuntu7. It only happens a few times a day, difficult to reproduce in xev. I am mostly working with the mouse stick and its related mouse buttons. At some point, the mouse pointer does not react on clicks from these buttons any more. What mostly helps is pressing the (left) button associated with the touchpad. There seems to be some interference between the buttons associated with the stick and those associated with the touchpad. [Bug 361370] Re: Link isn't created
I might have just discovered something relevant. As you know, when you change a note's title the text in links pointing to it change. If I have the sentence "Thomas Jefferson wrote the American [L]Declaration of Independence[/L]", where the text between [L][/L] points to another note: 1 - If I change the note's title to "the Declaration of Independence", the original sentence would change too: "Thomas Jefferson wrote the American [L]the Declaration of Independence[/L]", where an additional "the" has been added. 2 - If instead I remove the word "American", the link disappears: "Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence". 3 - However, if I remove the word "American" AND then I change the note's title to "the Declaration of Independence", the original sentence reads: "Thomas Jefferson wrote [L]the Declaration of Independence[/L]" That is: instead of adding an additional "the", Tomboy recognises the article that was already there and adds it to the link. I am pretty sure that this article recognition is probably intentional, but related to the described problem. -- Link isn't created https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/361370 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 415023] Re: brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100
ozzyboy, just reread your comment at 152. Some of your problems are definitely to do with bug 435352. The problem there is that the video camera drivers seem to have some kind of conflict with the usb drivers. There's no ideal solution, but as a workaround you can rebuild your kernel with some changes (there are some hard to follow instructions at 435352). Or, if you don't need the camera, you can just disable it either by turning it off with Fn F6 or by doing the following: sudo gedit /etc/modprode.d/blacklist.conf enter password add "blacklist uvcvideo" to an empty line (maybe add a "#blacklisting uvcvideo to enable usb ports" line as well so you remember what you've done) save close gedit restart And you should have your usb ports but not your camera. -- brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/415023 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
