A quick update on this. After several restarts and package reinstallation 
nothing worked for me. However, unplugging my dongle from the USB and 
replugging it back in it worked. I read this is a common behavior on linux when 
it comes to wireless mouse dongles. Everything works as expected now, but I 
didn't realize I had to physically remove and re-insert my BT hardware to have 
it work.
This is the dongle in question, Ubuntu being on their supported systems:

File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/blueman/bluez/Device.py", line 33, in 
err
  raise exception
  dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not 
receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a 
reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout 
expired, or the network connection was broken. 
  This used to work before the update.
