Re: [SM-USERS] Looking for a new version with AJAX etc.

2012-12-02 Thread jerry
OK, I just installed Roundcube. I must say, it's a pleasing interface.
You are
able to use shift-click and ctl-click on the message list to choose
multiple messages for
deletion - unlike SM where you have to individually click on each
message.

On the other hand, Roundcube is definitely more resource-hungry. It
uses an SQL
database to organize the emails. I had a couple of really big mail
spools - one
was 1.7 gigabytes - and roundcube barfed when I tried to open it.

Also, I have learned never to hit the "refresh" button in roundcube.
The web browser
goes away for a long time, and my server gets bogged down with imapd
processes.  The
refresh in SM is much more civilized.

Oh, and Roundcube doesn't have "delete-and-next".

As far as adapting SM to AJAX - doesn't sound too probable to me. AJAX
is a totally different way of doing business. I am starting to use it
in my business software ( a set of LAMP applications ) and I can say
that it's hard to poke at the edges with AJAX and just do a little here
and there. One of the main strengths of SM is the richness of all the
plugins - and I can't but imagine that converting to AJAX would break
all or most of them.

Re: [SM-USERS] 100% busy disk

2005-03-23 Thread Jerry Mersel
Hi:

  Please don't misunderstand me. I am not blaming squirrelmail for
eating up resources unnecessarily.
I have seen other questions on this list, that don't have anything to do
directly with squirrelmail, so I decided to ask my question as well.

I am using serveral different tools to check the server.
Among them uptime an application to monitor the computer environment.
(Along with iostat and top).

It is not a DoS attack either. It was the first thing I checked.

     Jerry

 If I go over to 1.4.4 can I expect the same problem?

[SM-USERS] performance

2005-05-03 Thread Jerry Mersel
Hi:
   For the longest time I had this problem of performance when using
the squirrelmail server. I finally found the problem, and I hope that
it can help someone else.
The problem was browscap.ini. After removing this file and its use via
php.ini the performance improved. I found this surprising since I didn't
find the get_browser function in any of the php code.

 Jerry

[SM-USERS] Delete & Next?

2005-08-11 Thread Jerry Kaidor
Hi folks,

   After at least 10 years with Elm, I have switched to SM - it's great!
And it's clear that the Squirrelmail community is very active. I only tried
SM because I wanted to provide webmail to my employees - but wound up
using it as my main mailer.

   At first, I thought it was fairly broken in its handling of the mail
spools - but it turned out that the broken part was the IMAP package
included with Slackware. After compiling & installing UW IMAP,
everything just started to work.

   ANYWAY, what this email is really about is a little tiny feature that
would be really nice: It often happens that I get a little behind on
my
email, and need to go through it fairly expeditiously. Typically, I read
each email, delete it, and go to the next.

  The SM viewer has a "delete" button, which is cool. What would be even
cooler would be a single "delete and go to the next message" button.
Maybe it's time for me to learn PHP :).

[SM-USERS] internet explorer and corrupt pdf documents

2006-03-15 Thread Jerry Mersel
Hi :

   I am running squirrelmail 1.4.3a, apache2, and php5.
   squirrelmail is being accessed via https.
  Everything works fine on most systems,and browsers but on IE6 on
windows on trying to open a pdf attachment users are getting an error
that the file is corrupt. It isn't though, I have no
problem opening the attachment in other places and even on the system
that says that it is corrupt
works sometimes.

I also tried it with no plugins, but that did not help.

  Thanks,
    Jerry

[SM-USERS] ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server

2007-12-18 Thread Jerry Reininger
Upgrade 1.4.12 IMAP bug
OS: Windows XP SP2
Web Server: Apache 2.2.6
PHP: 5.2.5
IMAP Server: Mercury/32 4.52

Everything worked correctly using SM 1.4.11. After the upgrade to SM
1.4.12 and 1.4.13 the following error occurs when trying to "reply" to an
email and the [send] button is pressed.

ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server.
Query: Select "INBOX.SENT"

The reply email is sent, but the error occurs. It seems to be stalling
out.

It is possible to create a "new" email and send it. It's even possible to
"forward" an email. It just will not work on "replying" to an email.

Upon looking closer at the problem, if the SM 1.4.11 SRC "compose.php"
(65KB) replaces the new SRC "compose.php" file in SM 1.4.12 (63KB) and SM
1.4.13 then everything works correctly.

There are no errors reported in the IMAP or server logs.

I'm going to assume that the code change between SM 1.4.11 and SM
1.4.12/1.14.13 is causing the issue.

Got any ideas besides this as a work around?

Re: [SM-USERS] html_mail and smileys

2008-08-16 Thread Jerry Mersel

Hi Paul:

   Yes I use the FCKeditor, and I do
attach the emoticons that it provides.
   I try to see them
on Mozilla 1.7.12, and firefox  1.5.0.1.

   I
sent myself a email  (to the same server), and to gmail.

   On gmail I saw an empty rectangle.
   On the
same server using the squirrelmail client I saw the question "View
unsafe images"
    I said yes to that, but then
squirrelmail just threw me out (logged me out).

 Thanks for your help,

Re: [SM-USERS] html_mail and smileys

2008-08-17 Thread Jerry Mersel

I enabled both the local server to trust all emails, and
gmail
to show images.

On squirrelmail server I just get a
large empty rectangle, and on gmail
a small one.

I tried
putting the link directly on the address line.
On the local server I
got a bunch of straight lines.
On gmail I got "loading" a
small red patch for a moment then
my list of emails appeared.

 Best regards,
   Jerry
P.S. Lets see what
happens if I add a smiley here.

Re: [SM-USERS] bus error

2003-02-21 Thread jerry . kendall

Alex,

there is a bug with the setcookie() function call on Sparc64.
For whatever reason, I have not had time to look into it further, the
setcookie() is crashing the httpd app.

I read somewhere that setcookie() had an issue with the 3rd param. So, I simply
changed all calls (about 6 of them),
from

setcookie(xxx, fff, ggg, hhh,...);

to

setcookie(xxx,fff);

and the bus errors stopped.

However, I have not yet determined if this causes any 'badness'.

Have fun.

[SM-USERS] Bayesspam slow?

About 600 nonspam and 250 spam messages in the database.

Is this what other people experience? How can I speed BayesSpam up?

Enable it, slow squirrel.

Thanks for the tips,

1) How do I enable server side filtering with the Bayesspam module?

My naive belief is that SpamAssassin can be set up for Bayesian spam
prevention, but the SquirrelMail Bayesspam module must necessarily be
doing filtering on login.

I am not wedded to Bayesspam -- is there a server side bayesspam
technology that features a squirrelmail interface to interact with
(teaching it spam vs. ham, etc.)? My understanding is that Spam Assassin
doesn't have a SquirrelMail learn/unlearn interface? Or am I wrong?
Does SpamAssassin have a SquirrelMail interface?

2 & 3 I am using courier, and I believe I do have server side sorting
implemented (not sure about server side threading (what is server side
threading?))

Thanks,

Jerry

Tomas, thanks for the help, I'll look into that. Specifically regarding
these salearn filters, am I right in guessing that I forward spam to
user-salearn-spam and ham to user-salearn-ham?

Thanks,

Jerry

[SM-USERS] fsockopen(): SSL operation failed

2003-12-10 Thread Jerry Westrick
Dear Squirrelmailers:

I've tried to get your software to work on a newly installed SuSE 9.0
server.

I first tried with standard SuSE rpm, via Yast2, I usually get very good
results with this.

But, alas, the Squirrelmail installation don't work.

What works:
IMAP (uw with TLS, tested with kmail)

Apache2 with mod_php, (I guess it's working, since I get your login
screen).

Now for what don't work:
When I try to logon, I get the following error:

fsockopen(): SSL operation failed with code 1. OpenSSL Error
messages: error:1408F10B:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_RECORD:wrong version
number
in /srv/www/htdocs/squirrelmail/functions/imap_general.php on line 454

Warning: fsockopen(): php_stream_sock_ssl_activate_with_method: SSL

Warning: fsockopen(): failed to activate SSL mode 2 in

Anyone know which component is FUBAR?

[SM-USERS] file_manager plug-in, cannot attach files.

2003-12-17 Thread Jerry Wintrode
I just installed the file_manager plugin. When you click on "send" next to
a file, the compose window pops up but the file is not attached. I cannot
figure out where to start troubleshooting this.

The regular attach method works when you browse files and attach them.
However here to I cannot attach a local file to an e-mail.

[SM-USERS] email appears as blank page

2004-06-30 Thread Jerry Mersel
Hi:
  Some emails appear as a blank page until I hit the refresh button
in Internet Explorer. On Mozilla the same email appears right away.
(without refresh).

I also noticed that this happens only when using a proxy. Otherwise
the mail appears correctly the first time.
Any ideas?

Jerry

 But I had more in mind of importing about 2000 addrbooks for about
2000 users.
 Not through a plugin.

Assuming you haven't checked out the plugins page.
abook_import_export plugin version 0.8.0. has what you want.
http://www.squirrelmail.org/plugin_download.php?id=29&rev=1016
However the official version doesn't export properly.
Here is a utility to fix the exported csv file.
http://home.tbbs.net/shadow/egrab/fixer.zip
My unofficial version does export properly

[SM-USERS] another question on personal address books

2004-07-22 Thread Jerry Mersel
Hi:
   The personnal addressbooks are kept in files called .abook
under the dir. squirrelmail/data.
   Squirrelmail also gives the possibilities to connect to different
imap servers.
Here's the problem - whatif the user-name is the same for 2
different servers, but the users are 2 different people.
Then it is possible for one user to modify/delete the addressbook
of the other. This also is true for the preferances, since they are kept
in .pref.

 Is there a solution for this problem?
Thank you,
   Jerry

Thank you Tomas for your suggestion.
How do I do that?
How do I configure squirrelmail to look under
data/, data/, etc.

P.S. With config.pl I just saw the possibility to set one data
directory. And no way to connect it to a particular server.

[SM-USERS] Continueing problem with IE6

2004-08-03 Thread Jerry Mersel
Sometimes while trying to read a message with IE6 (on XP) I come up with
a blank page.
In order to see the message it is necessarry to do a refresh (with

I've seen the solution to this on the web. I tried it. It didn't help.
What I want to do is a refresh from the php code.
How can I do this?
Which function displays an email message?

[SM-USERS] Folder list disappears except for INBOX

2004-08-14 Thread Jerry Mersel
Hi:

I am using the multilogin plugin to make it possible to use
imap on several different servers.
On the UW servers I see no problems. But on our novell imap server
 when I create a folder all the folders on the left hand side disappear
and all the folders that are subscribed to disappear.
 This is my setup from the multilogin plugin for the particular server:

   'wisemail' => array(
  'imapServerAddress' => '132.77.4.53',
  'imapPort'  => '143',
  'imap_server_type'  => 'courier',

  'pop_before_smtp'   => true,
  'default_folder_prefix' => '.',
  'data_dir'  =>
'/usr/local/apache/htdocs/squirrelmail/wisemail.data',
  ),

   I am using squirrelmail 1.5.0, php4, apache 2, on a redhat AS 3.0

I only see this when trying to access our novell imap server.
and then only sometimes. I see nothing consistant.

Re: [SM-USERS] Large mail freezes.

2004-08-17 Thread Jerry Mersel
I would be glad to run 1.4.3a, but it doesn't have all the features of 1.5.0.

Is it possible to sort your email according to sender, subject as well
as date on 1.4.3a because what I have seen doesn't do that.

Can we also delete and then see the next or previous message in 1.4.3a
I haven't seen that either.

If you can point me in the right direction (perhaps a plugin) I will
definitly move to 1.4.3a.

Hi:

  This isn't very important, but it would be nice to be able to have
those icons that are next to the message list (envelope closed, envelope
open, paperclip, etc) in version 1.5.0 also in 1.4.3a is there a way to do
that?

   Regards,
 Jerry

Hi:

  When I receive an attachment with Hebrew (in this test case) in the
filename. And I want to save the attachment. The Hebrew letters turn
into its hexadexmal code instead of the proper letters.

Any ideas?

[SM-USERS] On creation of new folders old folders disappear

2004-09-05 Thread Jerry Mersel
I had this same problem while using 1.5.0, but then got advice on how to
solve it.

The advice worked for 1.5.0, but doesn't for 1.4.3a.

again here is the setup for a novell imap server using the multilogin plugin.

'wisemail' => array(
  'imapServerAddress' => '132.77.4.53',
  'imapPort'  => '143',
  'imap_server_type'  => 'courier',
  'smtpPort'  => '25',
  'pop_before_smtp'   => true,
  'default_folder_prefix' => 'INBOX.',
  'trash_folder' => 'Trash',
  'sent_folder' => 'Sent',
  'draft_folder' => 'Drafts',
  'show_prefix_option' => false,
  'default_sub_of_inbox' => false,
  'show_contain_subfolders_option' => false,
  'optional_delimiter' => '.',
  'disp_default_folder_prefix' => $default_folder_prefix,
  'delete_folder' => true,
  'force_username_lowercase' => false,
  'allow_server_sort' => false,
  'data_dir'  => '/var/lib/squirrelmail/wisemail.prefs',

 when I create a folder it makes all the other folders (except for theINBOX)
to disappear.
I noticed under the groupwise client what folder it really creates is

mail
   ..

After I remove mail folder and everything under it I see all the old folders.
Please help with this.

Jerry

 I think it has something to do with the $default_folder_prefix,
 which is mail. And is created for some reason when I create a folder
 on wisemail. (As I wrote, mail/../.)

 I hope I passed all the needed information.

Re: [SM-USERS] On creation of new folders old folders disappear

2004-09-14 Thread Jerry Mersel
  I put $org_title = "test"; (and something similar for $org_name)
on top of the config.php for multilogin so it would not be dependant on the
server.

  I also tried it by checking the check box with the label "remember login
server". So I would be using the same server whenever I reloaded the page.
Was this sufficient?

[SM-USERS] 100% busy disk

2005-03-19 Thread Jerry Mersel
Hi:
  I am running squirrelmail 1.4.3a, php 4.3.2, apache 2.0, on Redhat AS
3U3.

Sometimes "/" and swap are 100% busy. This happens when there are about
280 processes running. Could someone give me some tips?
I have the LimitRequestBody set to 2500. Would lowering it help at all?
How about setting up a RAM disk?

Thanks,
  Jerry

[SM-USERS] set origion of email

2009-05-13 Thread Jerry Mersel

Hi:

    I want to set the origion of an
email to the squirrelmail server.

    This is
because we have a user (an important one) who is getting

an address from some ISP and that address is being marked as SPAM
   by our  mail gates. So I want to "hide" that
originating address.
  So it appears to come from the
squirrelmail server.

  My settings are
   Perhaps changing from SMTP to sendmail?

Thanks,

Jerry

Hi:

   To clearify a little:

Part of the header looks like this:

I want the not to be used.

I tried sendmail but it didn't help, at
least not in the configuration I am using.

[SM-USERS] "compose to selected" in addresses selection

2009-07-05 Thread Jerry Mersel

Hi:

   When I choose users in the address book (via a checkbox) and then
   click on the "compose message to" button.
   Another window is open but it opens to a blank page instead of the
   compose window.

   Any clues?

 Thank you,
    Jerry

Re: [SM-USERS] SM and UW Wont' Play

2010-02-11 Thread Jerry Kaidor
Thank you so much, Tomas!

   Problem solved. It was permissions. All my web stuff belongs to user
"nobody", and I have configured apache to use that. But the latest
distributions have gone to user "apache".

  I had to chown /var/lib/php from root.apache to root.nobody. Poof!
Working Squirrelmail!

   WRT security - my Squirrelmail is buried in a directory that requires
https to use it. And it talks to imap on the same machine via localhost.
So I could just go to plaintext authentication, since
the link is already encrypted anyway. The only time it becomes an issue
is if I want to support external mailers on the Internet.
   I admit to some concern about having my password in a plaintext file in
/etc, but with chown 400, nobody can see it but root, and if an invader
gets root, I'm dead meat anyway.

   The Internet has become a nasty place - I pine for the days when it was
just universities and networking nerds. People are constantly banging
on my linux box trying to get root.

   I wrote a Perl script that constantly watches for failed login
attempts. It applies a leaky bucket algorithm to each IP with failed
attempts. If enough failed attempts occur in a short enough time (
causing a bucket overflow ), it blacklists the offending IP for a day,
dropping all its packets on the floor at the earliest possible
opportunity. At the present moment, there are 6 IPs blacklisted.

*** Thanks for the pointer. If UW doesn't satisfy, I'll try it.

   The main thing I like about UW is that it deals with mail kept in the
usual place - /home/myname/Mail with the individual message lists as
files in mbox format. Because I also read mail from the Linux command
line with elm.

  And 20-30 folders is fine with me - that's about all I have anyway.

[SM-USERS] server used as spammer

I am using squirrelmail 1.4.17
I have a user whose password was
compromised in some way and the squirrelmail
server started sending
out spam  email every second or so. (using sendmail).
I also got
in the logs this warning -
 Authentication-Warning:
machinename: apache set sender to some name using -f.

Can you
recommend a way to prevent a recurrence of this.

[SM-USERS] Funky email dates

2010-06-04 Thread Jerry Kaidor
Hello,

   I don't think this is a Squirrelmail problem at all, but am at a loss
as to how to start troubleshooting it.

   I have a vendor who sends me invoices and statements as PDF files. All
of their emails are coming through with a date of December 31, 1969.
They
claim that it's my system's fault. I really doubt it, because everybody
else's emails are OK. That date is suspiciously close to the Unix epoch
date of January 1, 1970

   Looking at the emails themselves ( with the view all headers feature ),
all the dates are OK. Where does SM get the date that it displays on the
screen above the message? Is it an "envelope" from the IMAP server?
Right
now, I am using UW imap, but am in the process of installing dovecot (
haven't configured it yet ).

[SM-USERS] Idea for cool SM feature

2011-07-14 Thread Jerry Kaidor
Hello,

   Here's something that comes up routinely:
* People I do business with all have cell phones.
* All the cell phones can receive text messages.
* The cell phone companies have magic email addresses that convert emails
  into text messages. For example 1234567...@vtext.com sends a text to
  phone # 123-456-7890, but ONLY if that happens to be a Verizon #.
* So when I want to send a text to somebody, I go cruise the web looking for
  listings of cell phone companies.

  So I think it would be a nice plugin for SM to have a "text address"
button, where you type in a phone # and it magically pops the "texting"
email address into the To: field.

  The only thing I see that's hard about this is maintaining a database of
the cell phone exchanges. Or possibly doing HTML scraping on the fly
when
somebody presses the button. Of course, HTML scraping tends to break
whenever somebody updates their website.

Hello all,

   I have a question about upgrading. I unziped SM 1.4 and copied the
information in the data directory but it appears the info didn't take.
My new address book is empty and none of my preferences have been kept.
What all do I need besides the old plugins and the information from the
data directory to sucessfuly port over my clients preferences and make
this a transparent swich from sm 2.2.11 ?

browse the web about twice week. Most of my work involves xterms, cli,
and not much as far as gui goes unless I'm testing something like SM for
functionality. You do a forum and you throw ppl like me out of the loop.

One other choice is cvs as thats what I do and easy to update as well
:). Anyways, that won't help you with aspell. If you realy need aspell
and insend to have a spell checker you can posably do a force no-deps
for pspell and then install aspell, another posability is install from
source. Just before you do that insure it's not vital to php's
operation. Does anyone have any ideas on this as I never seem to recall
haveing pspell with my php install.

2004-10-25 Thread Jerry M. Howell II

   How would you allow clients to view unsafe images without haveing to
   go to options and click view unsafe images? looked in the plugin
   directory and don't even know or see a plugin in there relateing to
   unsafe images.

   Thanks,
