SquirrelMail 1.5.0 was released before PHP 5.2.0. In PHP 5.1.0-5.1.2 some
very specific language construct was modified or fixed. SquirrelMail 1.5.0
used that construct. Result is "SM 1.5.0" + "PHP 5.1+" = "can't send
emails"

Debian made a mistake by packaging devel version of SquirrelMail. If you
use SquirrelMail package created by Debian, get SquirrelMail packages from
newer Debian version or make sure that you don't have outdated package
version. Debian Etch should have 2:1.4.9a-5

[SM-USERS] load continuously for some emails in some languages with utf-8 charset

2010-06-28 Thread nethubonline

Using the newest version of SquirrelMail which is newly installed without any
plugins/locale, if the inbox contains the attached email
http://old.nabble.com/file/p29008490/abc.tar.gz abc.tar.gz , while I use
Chinese Trad language as my webmail interface, it will load continuously and
cause 100% CPU loading.

After I checked functions/i18n.php, I found that the problem only occurs
while $languages['XX']['CHARSET'] is "utf-8", such as Chinese Trad,
Vietnamese, Persian, but there is no problem for English, Spanish, Turkish,
Japanese, Chinese Simp.

Below is the information

SquirrelMail version: 1.4.20
Every plugin installed: No additional plugin or locale is installed
PHP version: 5.2.13
Web server: Apache/2.2.4
OS and: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.0, 2.6.18-128.el5PAE

do you have a /etc/httpd/conf.d/squirrelmail.conf

That's no squirrelmail problem but a problem related to your webserver
(maybe "Apache").

*.php files called as web side have to be readable by the webserver
(user or group).

I've seen many web applications which set all rights to 777 - that's
nasty, that's not necessary.

On my machine(s) there runs Apache with "wwwrun:www". I set the rights
for the squirrelmail directory to

cd /path/to/squirrelmail
chgrp -R www squirrel*
chmod -R o-rwx squirrel*
chmod -R g+rX squirrel*

Viele Gruesse!
Helmut

Could you search mailing list archives? Same thing popped less than 1-2
months ago. Restriction is in /etc/squirrelmail/apache.conf

OK. Now that we eliminated SquirrelMail 1.5.0 issues with newer PHP
version, lets continue.

Could you show your SquirrelMail configuration.

Run 'squirrelmail-configure' on your server

select 2 for "Server Settings", select B for "Update SMTP or Sendmail
Settings"

Show configuration options from 4 to 8.

When you send emails, what kind of error you see in SquirrelMail? "Cannot
send emails" does not explain why you think that you can't send emails.

If your website application can send emails and it is PHP based,
application uses standard PHP mail() function. SquirrelMail does not do
that. SquirrelMail uses local SMTP service by default. It must be
reconfigured in order to send through /usr/sbin/sendmail like mail()
function does and even then SquirrelMail can hit restrictions that don't
apply to mail().

You are absolutely right, after lots of digging it seems Dovecot caches
the authentication when using plain text auth which as webmail was
accessing locally it was doing.

Editing /etc/dovecot.conf and changing auth_cache_ttl from 3600 to a
lower value like 300 and restarting dovecot seemed to work perfectly.

Thank you all for your help and a a great product.

I do this and it seems to work.

#!/bin/bash
find /usr/share/squirrelmail/* -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \;
find /usr/share/squirrelmail/* -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \;
chown -R apache /usr/share/squirrelmail/*;
chgrp -R apache /usr/share/squirrelmail/*;

probably you have a file called config_default.php that you are supposed

Nope. I actually have the config.php as follows:-
-rw-r--r-- 1 root www-data 8506 2010-06-28 11:10
/usr/share/squirrelmail/config/config.php

I should have added that if wanting to run configuresetup script, in my
case conf.pl then I make that executable

I thought earlier you said that you had changed the ownerships of the files ?
are you sure you don't have 2 installations ?

Test your PHP configuration. See
http://www.squirrelmail.org/wiki/TestPHPSettings

Show local safe_mode, open_basedir and disable_functions values for your
SquirrelMail setup.

What kind of PHP setup are you using? php5-cgi or libapache2-mod-php5?

Could you think twice before suggesting such things? Debian does not have
apache user. It uses www-data:www-data. Never ask people to modify files
created by operating system packager unless you know that OS and have
information that existing package is broken. "Never mess in /usr, unless
it is /usr/local". That's golden rule for any package based Linux distro.
Especially when distribution has better update tools than rpm. All changes
will be lost when package is updated.

"client denied by server configuration" is not related to file system
permissions. It is Apache configuration restriction. In case of Debian it
is Limit directives in their apache configuration for SquirrelMail.

point taken but it is replaceable files.
when investigating I have lots of squirrels nesting in /usr/share I make a
soft link to the one I want to use.
maybe that is an error ?

Hallo, Alf,

Du meintest am 28.06.10:

I am getting the following error when trying to access
configtest.php on my Apache2 server on my Debian server [Mon Jun
 28 09:28:08 2010] [error] [client 41.28.52.171] client
 denied by server configuration:

What tells the apache log?
Maybe "/var/log/apache2/error_log"

Does the apache include the special squirrelmail path into its
configuration?

Viele Gruesse!

It is replaceable, but if user messed up permissions, we will have only one
solution. purge package, make sure that there are no files left in
/usr/share/squirrelmail, reinstall and we will restart problem debugging. It
only prolongs debugging. And now we can't be sure that user haven't messed
up permissions.

His config.php was readable when he could not access configtest.php. Now it
is not.

if you are moaning that the ownerships are wrong tell him what to do to
put them permissions right, it is not a big deal.

I did not tell him to do anything I was sharing my experience. he is
running an email server so we can guess he has a clue.
it is now half-past six and the guy asked the question at 2 or something.
You can assert now what the problem is. I know how it is to be fighting
man pages for hours so I piped up. why not tell him at 2 what to do ?
