the design of the solr admin page

2008-07-20 Thread Mark Miller

http://myhardshadow.com/poll.html

If you have a second, please answer this single question poll about the
look of the solr admin pages. It would be nice to gauge what the
community thinks of the current look. Take off of my question earlier to
the solr dev list: http://www.nabble.com/solr-admin-look-td18556364.html

Obviously a lack of votes will signal a lack of interest in the look of
the solr admin pages, which is basically option 4.

solr http 500 look

2008-07-20 Thread Fuad Efendi
What about commenting out this piece of outdated code in SolrServlet:

} catch (Throwable e) {
  SolrException.log(log,e);
  sendErr(500, SolrException.toStr(e), request, response);
}

For instance, SUN Java 5 not necessarily has resources to output
OutOfMemoryError including stack trace; only JRockit can do it... I
understand that historically SOLR developers tried to implement full power
of HTTP, but let's be more pragmatic...

P.S.
It didn't reach SOLR-DEV. Forwarding to SOLR-USER.

That's like asking if Solr should be made faster or easier to use :-)
No logo/cosmetic changes have been made to the admin pages recently
because no one has taken the time to find consensus and submit a
patch. Getting everyone to say "yes let's change things for the
better" won't change anything.

Perhaps a poll about what logo people prefer would be a more concrete step?

I certainly think a logo vote is in order, especially considering
Shalin's reply.

However, I do think the poll is useful. While I don't think the current
look is that great, its certainly possible the community disagrees and
is happy with it. Starting an initiative to change things would not make
a lot of sense in that case.

There are limited votes at the moment (around 10) but its interesting to
note, none have voted that they like the current look (though some dont
care).

With an appropriate data point that a lot of people are looking for a
look improvement, I can point to that when I come up with an idea to
prompt some new designs from the community. If I can point to data
showing that the community is looking for ui improvement, an
enterprising designer will know his work is in demand and will be
appreciated.

Then again I could be wrong. But in either case, armed with my data, I'm
on a personal mission to make the UI look great, and whatever concrete
steps are ahead, I'll be more than happy to pitch in. My issue is that I
am not a great design guy - but I know there are plenty of great design
guys out there - I just want to flush them out, and let them know their
work is desired.

Vote on a new solr logo

2008-07-20 Thread Mark Miller

From the dev list:

Shalin Shekhar Mangar:

+1 for a new logo. It's a new release, let's have a new logo too! First step
is to decide which one of these is more Solr-ish.

I'm looking to improve the look of solr, so I am going to do my best to push
this process along.
Not to keep shoving polls down everyones throat, but if you could, please go to
the following site
and rate the solr logos that you love or hate:
http://solrlogo.myhardshadow.com/solr-logo-vote/

If you want to submit a logo as a candidate, I am working on allowing auto
upload if possible, but you can just
shoot me the logo at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I will add it right away.

Thanks for any and all cooperation in improving the look of this fantastic
software.
