[openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website] Help with documentation for translations (Issue #5399)

2024-12-15 Thread maro-21 via rails-dev
I add documentation to the messages to be translated on Translatewiki. To
translate a string properly, especially when it's only one word, one needs
context or where the string is displayed. I have no idea where the following
strings are displayed. Can you help? They start with `Activerecord.models`, for
example:
* `Access Control List`
* `Country`
* `Diary Entry`
* `Friend`
* `Language`
* `Old Node`
* `Old Way`
* `Session`
* `Trace Tag`

Re: [openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website] Contribution activity on user page (Issue #5298)

2024-12-15 Thread maro-21 via rails-dev
I don't see why OSM should look like GitHub.

OSM is a map editor, not a social network. What you are proposing is to turn
OSM into a social network.

The activities you listed can be seen at:
* https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/test/history
* https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/test/notes
* https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/test/diary

The diagram you provided in the picture is not readable to me at all. There are
a lot of symbols and the whole thing is difficult to understand.

[openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website] Translations of "doesn't" (Issue #5432)

2024-12-20 Thread maro-21 via rails-dev
There are issues with this sentence:
`What it %{doesnt} include is opinionated data like ratings, historical or
hypothetical features, and data from copyrighted sources. Unless you have
special
permission, don't copy from online or paper maps.`
which is used on https://www.openstreetmap.org/welcome

A user reported that is hard to translate "doesn't" separately in Turkish:

>From
>[Translatewiki](https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Translating_talk:OpenStreetMap&oldid=12791558#Osm:Site.welcome.whats_on_the_map.doesnt/tr)

> appropriate.

The issue isn't only in Turkish. In English, italic writing can be used to
distinguish a word in a sentence, but in other languages it's not used or other
methods are used.

Therefore, I propose to give up highlighting the word here at all.

[openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website] Accessibility issue: links "click here" (Issue #5431)

2024-12-20 Thread maro-21 via rails-dev
Copy from
[Translatewiki](https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Translating_talk:OpenStreetMap&oldid=12791558#Accessibility_issue:_Osm:Confirmations.confirm.click_here/en,_Osm:Confirmations.confirm.resend_html/en):

The current message text is:

* **Confirmations.confirm.resend html**: If you need us to resend the
confirmation email, %{reconfirm_link}.
* **Confirmations.confirm.click here**: click here

For accessibility, “click here” should never be a link text, because the link
text should always describe the link. A more accessible version of these
messages would be:

* **Confirmations.confirm.resend html**: If needed, we can
%{reconfirm_link} to you.
* **Confirmations.confirm.click here**: resend the confirmation
email

[Rationale from the W3C](https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20-TECHS/F84.html): _Many
blind people who use screen readers call up a dialog box that has a list of
links from the page. They use this list of links to decide where they will go.
But if many of the links in that list simply say "click here" or "more" they
will be unable to use this feature in their screen reader, which is a core
navigation strategy. That's why it's a failure of 2.4.9 to not provide any way
of allowing them to know the destination from the link text alone. It is also
true for people who tab through links. If all they hear as they tab through the
document is "click here, click here, click here etc." they will become
confused._

Pity. So `en` is a mix of British and American or is it only British?

It would be good to have US English somewhere. Translatewiki has `en-gb` and
`en-ca`
[link](https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Special:MessageGroupStats?group=out-osm-0-all&messages=&language=en&x=D)
 so I thought `en` is US English.
In case Translatewiki won't add `en-us`, maybe you can add US translations to
`en-ca`?;) Isn't Canadian English similar to US English?

It looks like (correct me if I'm wrong) the translations of dates in the future
tense come from some external source.
See column End https://www.openstreetmap.org/user_blocks or
in https://www.openstreetmap.org/user_blocks/17361 the text "almost 10 years"
doesn't come from Translatewiki. There is no such string to translate.
Where does it come from?
And why do we have translations for past dates "x days/hours ago" but we don't
have for future days "in x years/days"?

[openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website] My user experience with number of changes on a changeset list (Issue #5770)

2025-03-07 Thread maro-21 via rails-dev
maro-21 created an issue (openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website#5770)

The number showing the number of changes and the number showing the number of
comments look almost the same and are hard to read and distinguish because they
are in the same place.

![Image](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/18348e8d-5edd-456e-96b3-1fe841494ebd)

I think it is too much information to show the number of changes in the
changeset list. For people like me who have been using OSM for years, this is
unreadable and it makes impossible to see which changesets have comments. What
value does this information add to the Changes History? Are 20 changes a lot or
a little? Why do we need so many numbers? This information could better be in
the changeset itself, not in the list. And it's not there, which is strange. As
a person who has been reviewing the list every day for several years, I find
the number of changes irrelevant. Or more accurately: it doesn't matter on this
list. Noticing the changesets that have some comments is important, but now I
don't see them.

In addition, the previous font and icon showing that the changeset has some
comments was larger, now it is smaller, this is a change to the downside.

Whether the changeset has a comment is now almost invisible!!!

![Image](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/83b4f434-19cd-425e-863d-ed6cad1e355c)

To sum up - reviewing changes is now more difficult and cumbersome.

Why not fair? There should be one source file in one language. It will simply

Then, since there are both supporters and opponents of this solution, I suggest
giving the option to set this in the preferences.

For me, the numbers that tell how many objects someone has added or removed are
meaningless, and only make it harder to see which changeset has a comment.

Google Translate translates these into Slovak as:
```
almost 1 year -> takmer 1 rok
almost 2 years -> Takmer 2 roky
almost 5 years -> Takmer 5 rokov
in almost 1 year -> takmer za 1 rok
in almost 2 years -> Za takmer 2 roky
in almost 5 years -> Za takmer 5 rokov
almost 1 year ago -> Takmer pred 1 rokom
almost 2 years ago -> takmer pred 2 rokmi
almost 5 years ago -> takmer pred 5 rokmi
```

Is it incorrect? If it's correct, it means that in Slovak there is no a
different form for future.

Since a month there is a text in English "xxx contributions in the last year"
in my profile and I don't know how to remove it. After clicking "Edit profile"
there is a blank text field.

Please reopen, because it hasn't been fixed.
I translated all "Company" into Polish weeks ago and the last update from
Translatewiki was on June 19 but the string doesn't appear:
* Polish: https://www.openstreetmap.org/profile?locale=pl
* French: https://www.openstreetmap.org/profile?locale=fr

"Home location name" is always in English, in every language:
* Polish: https://www.openstreetmap.org/profile?locale=pl
* French: https://www.openstreetmap.org/profile?locale=fr
* German: https://www.openstreetmap.org/profile?locale=de

No. These ones are used in other places. And "Social profile links" is not the
same as "Social Profile Links".

I see.

Has that changed? I remember that it used to be that the Translatewiki
translation update was twice a week.

In https://www.openstreetmap.org/profile:

These strings are only in English and there are no messages for them on

When I wrote these words, it was impossible to translate it. Now it works.
Thank you.

[openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website] changesets: addresses buildings on the list (Issue #6092)

2025-06-07 Thread maro-21 via rails-dev
maro-21 created an issue (openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website#6092)

In changesets, the recently added display of the building address instead of
the way number itself is using the `addr:housenumber` `addr:street` scheme. In
my language the order is reversed - first there is the street name and then the
house number. It should be possible for translators to change this.

[openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website] What is aria-label? (Issue #6195)

2025-07-14 Thread maro-21 via rails-dev
maro-21 created an issue (openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website#6195)

I'm trying to translate messages on Translatewiki and there are such strings:
* `Diary Entry`
* `Comments`
* `Date`

but I don't see what are they used for. I found that they are probably used on
users profiles who have diary entries, for example:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/SomeoneElse/
In the source of this page I can see
* `aria-label="Diary Entry"`
* `aria-label="Comments"`
* `aria-label="Date"`

But I can see them only in the source, not on the page. Is it some kind of alt
text for the icons? After copying whole text, icons are not replaced by this
text and it's neither a hover text.
