[Rd] CRAN: Update protocol buffers on macOS? (for RProtoBuf)

2018-07-06 Thread Jonathon Love

Hi,

I notice that the CRAN binary for the macOS version of RProtoBuf is
built against quite an old version of protocol buffers (from 2014,
before v3 format support was added).

the windows version is (blessedly) kept up-to-date, but I'd like to
float the suggestion that the macOS version get an update too.

[Rd] building R under mingw 4.7

2013-09-08 Thread Jonathon Love
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Hi,

We're developing a Qt application that links against R using Rcpp.

Qt5 requires Mingw 4.7, where as R seems to require Mingw 4.6. This
makes linking against R problematic.

Has anyone successfully built R with Mingw 4.7 (or 4.8)? Is this
possible? Is this something being worked on?

with thanks

[Rd] building R under windows - comm: file 1 is not in sorted order

2014-04-09 Thread Jonathon Love

Hi,

I'm just trying to build R under windows, and receive the following error:

windres -i dllversion.rc -o dllversion.o
comm: file 1 is not in sorted order
make[4]: *** [Rgraphapp.def] Error 1
make[3]: *** [rlibs] Error 1
make[2]: *** [../../bin/i386/R.dll] Error 2
make[1]: *** [rbuild] Error 2
make: *** [all] Error 2

I have been working through this document:

http://cran.rstudio.com/doc/manuals/r-release/R-admin.html#Building-the-core-files

and this error follows the issuing of the command

`make all recommended`

i am using

Rtools 3.1.0.1942, and am using the official 3.0.3 source tarball. I
have not customised the mkrules files at all (so building 32-bit).
Everything is as vanilla as I can make it.

Any tips on how I can solve this?

with thanks

Jonathon

[Rd] R, OSX, should creating SVGs request XQuartz

2014-08-27 Thread Jonathon Love
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

hi,

on OS X, when you try and use something which depends on X11, and you
don't have XQuartz installed, you receive an error message, it directs
you to download XQuartz, and then it euthanizes your process.

(my guess is that there is a skeleton X11 dylib installed in OS X by
default, and it is responsible for the error message and the
euthanasia. once XQuartz is installed, the skeleton dylib is replaced
with a functioning version)

in my application, i write SVGs using:

grDevices::svg( ... )

this provokes the X11 error message. i was wondering if this is an
erroneous/unnecessary loading of X11, or if grDevices::svg() does in
fact rely on X11 functions?

obviously, if i can avoid making my users install XQuartz if it isn't
necessary (not to mention avoiding the abrupt euthanizing of my
program), that would be ideal from my perspective.

with thanks

[Rd] Error building R from SVN - unable to run 'pdflatex' on 'example-1.tex'

2013-02-04 Thread Jonathon Love

G'day,

I'm trying to build R using the code from SVN. I am able to successfully
build the source from here:

http://cran.r-project.org/src/base/R-2/R-2.15.2.tar.gz

However, when building the code checked out from SVN (either from 2.15.2
tag, or the trunk) I get the following error:

Error: running Sweave on vignette
'/home/jonathon/projects/R/src/library/utils/vignettes/Sweave.Rnw'
failed with message:

 chunk 2
Error in texi2dvi(file = file, pdf = TRUE, clean = clean, quiet = quiet, :
unable to run 'pdflatex' on 'example-1.tex'
Execution halted
make[1]: *** [vignettes] Error 1

Is there a way I can fix this?

my bad. sorry.

on ubuntu 12.10 i did a checkout of the 2.15.2 tag

https://svn.r-project.org/R/tags/R-2-15-2

next i ran the tools/rsync-recommended script

then i ran:

./configure

(it did give me these warnings)
configure: WARNING: you cannot build info or HTML versions of the R manuals
configure: WARNING: inconsolata.sty not found: PDF vignettes and package
manuals will not be rendered optimally

then i ran:

make

giving me the error:

building/updating vignettes for package 'utils' ...
processing 'Sweave.Rnw'
Error: running Sweave on vignette
'/home/jonathon/projects/R/src/library/utils/vignettes/Sweave.Rnw'

make[1]: *** [vignettes] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/jonathon/projects/R/src/library'

other things that may be helpful:

gcc (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.7.2-2ubuntu1) 4.7.2
pdfTeX 3.1415926-2.4-1.40.13 (TeX Live 2012/Debian)

The problem seems to be with building vignette's for the recommended
packages. Any assistance would be appreciated.

2013-02-05 Thread Jonathon Love

yup. that fixed it. thanks for your help.

there are a handful of extra files in the source tarball (some pdfs,
etc.), that aren't in the SVN. it appears that building these requires a
bunch more stuff installed, and that's why building the source tarball
worked, but not the SVN contents.

Try this:

sudo apt-get build-dep r-base

which will install what the distro itself uses to build the package.

Also look into './configure --help' to learn about different aspects of the
build which you can turn on or off. I keep a little shell script with my
prefered configuration to create a local build of r-devel from SVN.
