Hmm, it's rather obvious that the first thing the eye should be attracted to should be what the page is about. Something that represents the site. Just like the first thing you see on a playboy mag is skin. The stories are just added bonus. By printing up different layout pages, and then flash them to someone and then ask them what was the first thing they saw, and what does it mean to them, you can find out what communicates what.
