[Python-Dev] Really sketchy Core Python GSoC 2016 ideas page up
Hey all, I've put up an incredibly sketchy, terrible ideas page up for Summer of Code with core python: https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/2016/python-core I'm pretty much the worst person to do this since I'm always swamped with admin stuff and particularly out of touch with what's needed in Core Python around this time of year, so I'm counting on you all to tell me that it's terrible and how to fix it. :) If you don't already have edit privileges on the python wiki and need them for this, let me know your wiki username and I can get you set up. (Or similarly, just tell me what needs fixing and make it my problem.) We're also still looking for more volunteers who can help mentor students. Let me know if this interests you -- we have a few folk who can do higher level code reviews, but we need more day-to-day mentors who can help students keep on track and help them figure out who to ask for help if they get stuck. I can also find folk who will provide mentoring for mentors if you'd like to try but don't think you could be a primary mentor without help! If you're interested in mentoring, email gsoc-adm...@python.org and we can get you the link to sign up. And if you emailed before and didn't get a response or haven't found a group to work with, feel free to email again! [Python-Dev] Google Summer of Code 2014: Looking for core python mentors!
For anyone who completely isn't familiar with this: Google Summer of Code is a program where Google pays students to work on open source projects for the summer. The motto goes: "Flip bits, not burgers." Google Summer of Code applications are open for mentoring organizations, and I've already put in Python's application. You can get more info here: https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/2014 What I'd like to know is if anyone's got any good ideas for core python projects this year and are interested in mentoring. We always have lots of students who'd like to work on Python, but right now we don't have any mentors who are available and interested in helping students make contributions to the language (We do, however, have mentors for various python sub-projects). Let me know if this might be interesting to you. I'm happy to answer any questions, and I've got experienced mentors who aren't core python devs but who'd be willing to pair up so you wouldn't have to go it alone, just let me know! Terri PS - I'm also looking for new sub-projects and other mentors -- just ask if you want to take part this year! ___ Python-Dev mailing list Python-Dev@python.org https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-dev Unsubscribe: https://mail.python.org/mailman/options/python-dev/archive%40mail-archive.com
Re: [Python-Dev] Google Summer of Code - Organization Deadline Approaching - March 29
On 03/26/2013 01:51 PM, Brian Curtin wrote: Just an FYI that there are under 3 days to apply to Google Summer of Code for mentoring organizations: http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/homepage/google/gsoc2013. The student application deadline is later on in May. If you run a project that is interested in applying under the Python umbrella organization, contact Terri Oda at te...@zone12.com I would obviously love it if you got your ideas up before the March 29th deadline so our application will totally shine and we'll be accepted immediately in to the program. But I should note that while the Google deadline is March 29th, I'm happy to accept applications for sub-organizations and new project ideas after that deadline. The students will be descending on April 9th, so if you want to attract the very best, try to get your project ideas up near then if at all possible! Presuming we get accepted, though, I can take extra ideas almost up until the student applications start to come in, but I'd prefer them before April 15th (again, so you can attract the best students). Is anyone here interested in leading CPython through GSOC? Anyone have potential students to get involved, or interested in being a mentor? For those on the fence about mentoring or worried about doing a good job, I have a few experienced GSoC mentors who are currently without projects who have volunteered to help us out this year. I'm happy to pair anyone who's interested with someone who loves working with GSoC students but maybe won't be familiar with the project, so you can learn the mentoring ropes and do code reviews but have a backup mentor there to help both you and the student through the GSoC process. Please let me know ASAP if you'd like to do this so I can introduce you to the person and give them time to learn as much as they can about the projects you're hoping to run before students start arriving. [Python-Dev] Python accepted as a GSoC 2013 mentoring organization!
Congratulations all; we've been accepted as a mentoring organization for Google Summer of Code 2013! Students can check out our ideas page here: http://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/2013 If you're interested in mentoring with the PSF and aren't already on the 2013 mentors mailing list, please get in touch with me ASAP. [Python-Dev] Core Python Projects for GSoC 2017?
Hey all, it's Google Summer of Code time again! For those not familiar with it, Google Summer of Code is a mentoring program where Google provides stipends to pay students to work with selected open source organizations. Python has participated for many years now, and we're hoping to be selected to participate again. One of the things we have to do to apply is have a bunch of interesting ideas for students to work on and a bunch of mentors who are excited about working with students. The PSF page is http://python-gsoc.org/ That has contact information and answers to questions like "what does it take to be a mentor?" and please feel free to ask if there's more you want to know! A good project idea is one that is useful to the community and can be completed by a student with the help of mentors during the 3-month duration of the program. We want at least two mentors available per idea (so that it's not a big deal if someone's at a conference or sick) and at least one of the mentors (usually the primary one) should be able to review code and work with the community to get code merged upstream when it's ready. So... is anyone here interested in mentoring this year, and does anyone have any great ideas of things that we need and can support in Core Python? Brainstorming appreciated! (Although only ideas with actual mentoring support will make the final cut.) I've got a stub of a Core Python ideas page here: https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/2017/python-core (If you can't edit the wiki, I can add people's usernames to the editor lists, or I can add ideas that are emailed to me.) And our ideas page template that has a checklist of things students usually want to know is here: https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/OrgIdeasPageTemplate If you're interested in mentoring, email gsoc-adm...@python.org so I can make sure you're on the list of people I ping with reminders. We need a good set of ideas by Feb 7 for our application, and then if we're accepted by Google, we can add a few other ideas up until Feb 28 or so.
