AFAIU, there's no reason that the HTTP STS custom domain CNAME support
would've broken this:

Is it suspicious that in the detailed log we see:

 'canonical_url': 'http://devguide.python.org/',

? I guess this comes from project admin configuration at RTD, additional 
to your conf.py.
