Any thoughts to time zone/DST handling for naive datetime objects? E.g.

For aware datetime objects, I think the time.mktime(dt.timetuple())

[issue4343] New function in Tkinter.py: setup_master

2008-11-18 Thread Guilherme Polo

New submission from Guilherme Polo <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Hi,

I've added a new function called setup_master.

This function is responsible for returning an usable master to the
caller, or fail and say so. The function is useful for any wrapper
basically, since all them has to set up a master sometime (or maybe
always require a master, but that is not very nice) and will usually do
it half wrong. The half wrong is about relying on _default_root being
available in Tkinter, which is not the case if support for default root
has been disabled.

There are two patches, the first adds the function, the second applies
it self where necessary in Tkinter. The later also adds some new
behaviour in Tkinter, previously Variable class and subclasses wouldn't
work properly without prior creation of a master (there are similar
problems in other parts too).

[issue4344] crash upon launch

2008-11-18 Thread kasper

New submission from kasper <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Hi

I'm new at programming and have chosen to start with python, and so I
have installed python 2.6, and played around with it a little.
However, a problem has occured: yesterday when i tried to run the
program - pythonwin editor 2.6.0 - a crash occured immediately upon
launch. All i do is start up the program, and while trying to open, the
program crashes, and a windows error window pops up, telling me that
'the program has encountered an error, and will now exit' - not telling
me anything useful about what kind of error has occured, or why. As
usual, the windows errorreport is of no use. And so I have little idea
of what causes the crash, but I do have a suspicion that the .dll
mfc90.dll might be a part of the problem, since it is mentioned in the
beginning of the errorreport.

Looking forward to hear from you.

Kasper

[issue4347] Dependencies of graminit.h are not rebuilt when the file is regenerated

2008-11-18 Thread Thomas Lee

New submission from Thomas Lee <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

It's important that dependencies of grammar.h get rebuilt if graminit.h
is regenerated (e.g. the Grammar is modified). If these dependencies do
not get rebuilt, the constants associated with each type of parse node
will have inconsistent values between the different intermediate files.

The net result is that a program afflicted by this might build without
errors, but then crash unexpectedly at runtime due to the inconsistent
constant values.

The patch is quite simple and ensures that all files that currently
depend on graminit.h are rebuilt if it changes.

It also removes an unnecessary #include from Python/future.c.

I believe a similar situation might occur with Python-ast.h and the
*_kind enumerations, but have yet to run into such a specific issue.
I'll post a separate patch if I do find this to be a problem.

[issue4116] name conflict in ScrolledCanvas.__init__() in Lib/turtle.py

2008-11-18 Thread Gregor Lingl

Gregor Lingl <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> added the comment:

I'd like to see this patch accepted and done for Python 2.6.1 and (at
the same time) python 3.0 before the last rc is released. So could you
dedicate a few minutes to reviewing it.

To demonstrate the nature of this issue (and also the nuisance it could
produce) I've constructed a minimal example to show the consequences of
the bug:

import turtle

s = turtle.Screen()

def changecolor():
s.bgcolor(1.0, 0.5)  # needs 3 floats as arguments

s.ontimer(changecolor, 1000)
turtle.mainloop()

This should create an error message like this:

TurtleGraphicsError: bad color arguments: (100, 100)

Instead it results in:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "C:\_\provoke_error.py", line 11, in
turtle.mainloop()
  File "C:\Python26\lib\lib-tk\Tkinter.py", line 325, in mainloop
_default_root.tk.mainloop(n)
  File "C:\Python26\lib\lib-tk\Tkinter.py", line 1414, in __call__
self.widget._report_exception()
  File "C:\Python26\lib\lib-tk\Tkinter.py", line 1175, in _report_exception
root = self._root()
AttributeError: _Root instance has no __call__ method

because the _root() method defined in line 1105 of Tkinter.py is
overwritten by the _root attribute of ScrolledCanvas (lines 362 and
382). So in these (hopefully rare) cases where an error message is
directly provoked from the Tkinter module, this will fail letting the
user without clue about what happened.

With the proposed patch applied, the above script produces the correct
error message.

Regards, Gregor

I indeed tested that the PyPI user registration refuses non-ascii
characters in both username and password.

But the reported error is only the first of a bytes/str mess.
See attached patch.

- I chose to encode package metadata with utf-8
- Since I did not set credentials in some .pypirc file, the submission
fails; my first tests on a sample package returned a 401 error (normal)
but now I only get 200 return codes. I hope my package will not show up
in PyPI...

This needs more testing with a real package of a real developer.

[issue1028] Tkinter binding involving Control-spacebar raises unicode error

2008-11-18 Thread Guilherme Polo

Guilherme Polo <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> added the comment:

Here is a patch that doesn't use magic numbers :P
I didn't hit the problem described in issue4313 with this one, and
PythonCmd should be doing this anyway, but ideally we should move to
Tcl_CreateObjCommand.

[issue4348] bytearray methods returning self

2008-11-18 Thread Terry J. Reedy

Terry J. Reedy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> added the comment:

Since 3.0c2 bytearray.translate() *does* return self with no change, I
don't understand your first comment, unless you meant 'is' instead of
'is not'. But I presume merging forward will fix it.

[issue1108] Problem with doctest and decorated functions

2008-11-18 Thread Skip Montanaro

Skip Montanaro <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> added the comment:

I applied this patch to my trunk sandbox. It seems to solve the problem
I just encountered where doctests are hidden in decorated functions &
tests pass. Checked in as r67277. Should be backported to 2.6 and
forward ported to 3.0.

[issue4352] imp.find_module() causes UnicodeDecodeError with non-ASCII search paths

2008-11-18 Thread Jukka Aho

New submission from Jukka Aho <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

imp.find_module() seems to cause an UnicodeDecodeError when the path
list contains paths with non-ASCII names. Tested on Windows [1]; see the
attached test case which demonstrates the problem.

[issue4338] TypeError (bytes/str) in distutils command "upload"

2008-11-18 Thread Martin v. Löwis

Martin v. Löwis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> added the comment:

I think Hagen's strategy is about right: report one problem at a time.

Of course, it would speed up the process if Hagen would provide a patch
that fixes a number of such issues at one. Without such an effort, it is
likely that distutils in 3.0 just won't work. I don't see that as a
serious problem, since there will be a 3.0.1 release, and a 3.0.2
release, and so on.

[issue4338] TypeError (bytes/str) in distutils command "upload"

2008-11-18 Thread Martin v. Löwis

Martin v. Löwis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> added the comment:

Your patch seems to contain a number of unrelated changes, such as
introducing an abbreviation for http.client, and using .reqest() instead
of putrequest/putheader/endheaders/send. What is the rationale for these
changes? If they are unrelated to this issue, they should be removed
from the patch.

[issue1028] Tkinter binding involving Control-spacebar raises unicode error

2008-11-18 Thread Hirokazu Yamamoto

Hirokazu Yamamoto <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> added the comment:

I confirmed PythonCmd_check_for_utf.diff worked on my machine. IDLE
didn't crash.

>I can reproduce it here with tk8.4, using tk8.5 doesn't cause this.

That is, this is a bug of tk8.4, and solved in tk8.5 which is already
stable release? If so, I feel python don't have to workaround this bug.

# I'm a little worry about performance because Tcl_NumUtfChars() will be
called for every command string.

By the way, I cannot reproduce this bug with tk8.4.12(on windows). What
is your tk version? Maybe older than that?
