Re: [PHP] PHP Editor - which to use?

2003-09-22 Thread Becoming Digital
I'm a big fan of ActiveState Komodo, largely because it handles PHP, Perl, Python, and
others. While most of my work is done in PHP, it's nice not having to switch editors
when trying to port code to or from another language.

I must agree with Ryan that there is no 1 app to use. Dreamweaver MX is a staple in
anyone's software library, especially for visual development, and Zend Studio is
another great app. However, what I like about either, you may not so you'll really
just have to try out the numerous demos and find what works for you.

how do you determine the resolution that a client is running? because if I
make a webpage for 800 X 600 then a user is running a res. of 1024 X 768
then the page will be smaller in his browser, therefore how do I determine
what resolution its being run at, therefore the appropriate sized webpage
will be visible?

I messed around with it for a few days just trying to add two fields to
the product table but it so difficult to find where all the mysql db
errors were being generated I just gave up and decided to write my own
cart from scratch. ;)

I should clarify a little. I gave up after only trying to add two fields
because the other features that I needed in a shopping cart were WAY
more complicated than the two fields and I reasoned that if it was that
difficult to add two fields it's going to be near impossible to add what
I wanted. So I decided my time would be better spent developing my own
cart (what learning experience it's been!!). I would be able to extend
my own cart much more quickly and efficiently than I could anyone elses

I am about to run off to a project's development group meeting (the
general audience kind, requestors and developers) and this question came
up this morning for a potential answer in this afternoon's meeting. I
have googled, searched, poked and prodded...but I need to see if I can
find something more specific than I have overturned.

I was asked about a doc mgmt system that would allow users spread over
disparate systems to upload docs of all types, have them scanned for
content, cataloged, and finally searchable. All sorts of doc types,
spreadheets, pdf's, word docs, word perfect docs, xml, html, etc. etc.
etc. The system would need to be installed, configured, and then sent on
a search of existing docs to scan and catalog.

Does anyone have a favorite application like this or near this? Is
anyone familiar with an app that would not require too much front end
noodling to accomplish this? Or should I clean the white board and get
started?

Subject: [PHP] POST Variable Empty

I am pulling my hair trying to figure this out. Maybe some of you can
shed some light on the problem.

I am uploading a file through a web connection using the $_FILE array.
Works perfectly on small files. The code executes and it goes through
the script like a champ.

BUT ...

When I try to upload a larger file it fails. I get no Errors from PHP.
The only way I knew it wasn't working is because my script is set up
to catch errors.

I checked Some of the other POST values to see if they had any value in
them. None of them did. I even did a print_r($_POST) and it printed a
blank array. So just to be stupid I tried printing the $_GET variable
and it only had the information I was passing in the URL, none of the
form information from the previous page.

I have tried different files and different names for the files. Still
the POST variable is empty. But when I use a smaller file the process
works perfectly.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Jonathan Pitcher

In the Unix world with PHP, you can do OS fingerprinting by calling
a system tool such as nmap (option: -O),
but this require root privileges, and
is not always perceived as well-behaviour by sysadmins.
Or you can do everything you want with PHP sockets.

I guess Netcraft use OS fingerprinting tool like nmap
above their 'HEAD /' http requests.

And ok, I wont post Perl things anymore ;-)

Jason touched on the easiest solution: email to fax. You can use PHP to send the
email, at which point it will be converted to fax. Simply add a layer of code such
that if your user chooses to send via fax, the message is transparently relayed to the
email/fax gateway.

The closest equivalent to that would be to print via IPP. But I doubt whether

There are also plenty of subscription type email-fax gateway services that you

Good day all

I have a txt file that has values from various strings written to it.

What Im looking for is the following

$name = "Chris';

I need to do a count on $name so that it returns 5 letters. Then before writing it to
the output file I
know that it has to be 40 charecters long before it gets written.

So I know its 5 now I need automatically add another 35 empty spaces to it to make it
40 so that it makes the
$name like this

$name = "Chris"; < if I do a count on
this it should be 40 charecters long

Can anyone help out here???

Re: [PHP] Please visit my php program

You're missing the image "attention.gif." Also, if a user directly loads
samplePost.php, your script generates the following error: "Notice: Undefined index:
captcha in /usr163/home/b/e/bestweb/public_html/captcha/samplePost.php on line 12

It's not a bad little script. I would recommend adding nonsense words; using
dictionary words allows for fairly easy bypass. Also consider adding some error
control to samplePost.php such that it sends you back to test.php if the page is
directly loaded. An HTTP referrer check seems ideal. Have fun.

I suppose people can debate just about anything, but I doubt anyone can come up
with any statistics to defend the stance that persistent connections are slower
under heavy traffic. Of course, I'd love to see people's results, but my
experience has shown quite the opposite.

Also, the difference becomes exaggerated with heavier traffic. So, a better
argument would be to ask whether the overhead of managing persistent
connections is worth it when you only have one database connection per hour. In
that case, it may actually be worse, but that's not the situation that was
described. :-)

Hope that helps.

Contact your hosting provider and ask them to make the change, or go through your

Re: [PHP] general OO php question

2003-10-06 Thread Becoming Digital
The "best" way to do this depends on what you really want to accomplish. Not knowing
anything about your project, it seems like your register function might fit within the
constructs of a larger class. However, it may do best as an independant object, but
that's not really the issue.

Regardless of how you choose to handle things, I wouldn't recommend coding in the
mysql_connect(). As Chris suggested, create a DB class for handling DB functions, or
just use one of the many that already exist. However, I would not recommend extending
this class with Register, as the two are independant entities. Rather, instantiate
your DB class within Register.

Sorry for what may be confusing wording. I haven't slept in a few days.

What you should do is define a db class and then extend that class with
the registration class.

(This is basically how I've been doing it. I'm no expert so it's very
possible this could be done in a more efficient way. Use at your own
risk. ;) )

(p.s. This is just pseudo-code)

Class Database

var $Result;

function Database()

// create usable db connection
}

function Query($sql)
{
// send a sql statement to the db

I don't know of any good books for patterns. much of what I know I
learned in university and from experience. But to take your problem and
perhaps give you a window on how you can organize things I will try to
lay out a possible plan.

Known classes:

- User manager (um)
- db connection (dbc)
- smarty (smarty)
- comments (comments)

Relationships:

- um uses smarty, dbc
- smarty uses dbc
- comments uses um

Proposal:

- middle man (mm) it's almost imperative to have a middle man
class that can return necessary instances of object (whether
it be multiple instances or a singleton). In InterJinn this
middle man class is the dynamic loader.

- database manager (dbm) to return database connections. This
could be a pooling mechanism for a given connection so that
you only ever return one connection. This has a problem
though if you wish to do a query based on the results of
another query without storing all the data from the first
query. There really isn't much difference in processing time
when using a pool and when returning a new connection.
InterJinn uses a pool for the default MySQL database layer,
but not for the Pear DB database layer. Pear DB may use
its own pool, but that's not for the user of the class to
  care about (black box coding).

- dbc is a single connection, whether it be pooled or not. The
only guarantee you should have is that it won't interfere with
another query (if pooled then the dbm should only return the
same connection if it has been freed.

- um should be a factory, you give it a userId, or name
and it returns a user object which the appropriate methods to
  retrieve/store user information.

- user object (user). Singleton for a given user (don't want to
update multiple copies of a single user object). The um can pool
user objects according to user Id and return references when
  requested.

- I'm not sure why smarty has a reference to a database
connection in your code (though I'm not greatly familiar with
Smarty since I've only used it in conjunction with other
people's code that was already using it). At any rate, unless
you are extending the smarty class, then you should give it
it's own database connection to use. if you wanted you could
always create a smarty manager layer to r

You need to get an additional IP address from your hosting provider (if you use one)
and then configure the box to act as a nameserver. I did just this for

Hey folks,

I know this topic comes up again and again but I couldn't find
any usefull php-editor for linux which is NOT written in java AND
has some advanced features like a "file navigation" (listing all functions
in a file with direct jump to them) or tooltips with the function definition
or similar.

I liked the features of the Zend IDE but its just to aching slow on linux
(don't know why, but its much faster on windows), while other native editors
are not made for php or just contain its syntax-highlightning without any further
special features.
Did I miss one of the available editors which provides these features?

Thanks,

Thomas

Hi,

I'm building a form where a user can enter text. When the form is submitted
I'm doing some validation before continuing. If the form isn't filled
correctly, then the user has to correct it before continuing. However, I
want to save the data that has been entered (some of it may be lengthy), so
I'm doing this:

If the $_POSTed string has quotes in it, the output contains a slash

"It's great" becomes "It\'s great" on the page.

I've tried echo addslashes($_POST['adTitle']);} and that doesn't work. Is
there another function that will output the string just as it was input?

I've searched through the manual and haven't found anything yet. Just
thought you all would know off the top of your head(s). :)

Thanks,

James

The code is really easy to understand and was taken from the manual but have

You cannot use ini_set() for register_globals. It must be done from .htaccess,

Use an ini_set in your sessions script (I am assuming that you are using a
seperate script to manage your sessions) to turn your registered globals
off. Likewise though, you might start looking for replacements for those
scripts as it takes time to make the changes, but it has been a year since
register_globals were turned off by default and mentioned that they were
going away in the future.

In addition, take a look at some of the other suggestions that were made,
beyond this one.

Re: [PHP] DB's on seperate server

2003-10-19 Thread Becoming Digital
If the DBMS itself is in those directories, may receive start errors in PHP when
trying to load the database extension. To prevent this problem, comment out the
following line in your php.ini (assumes MySQL):

extension=mysql.so

You may also want to set mysql.max_links = 0 as an additional measure but I don't
think it's necessary.

Quick yes or no question. My db's are running on a different server then my
Webserver. I've temporarily mounted the directories from the db server to the
webserver to compile db access. Once PHP/Apache are compiled can they be
safely unmounted or will it give me problems somewhere down the line?

I guess in short. Once compiled does PHP need anything from the database

[PHP] php|cruise - do unto others...

2003-10-20 Thread Becoming Digital
Anyone who's been on these lists for a few days is already familiar with CPT John W.
Holmes. He's probably helped each and every one of us more times than we can count,
all without asking for a thing. I think it's time we help him with something.

php|cruise is coming this March. As of now, John isn't going and I think that's a
huge loss. He should probably be one of those presenting, but at the very least, I'd
like him in our midst. He certainly deserves it.

I'm asking all of you to join me in Operation "Send Captain on the Cruise." All it
takes is a few minutes to PayPal a contribution to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Donations of any
size are welcome, and every little bit helps. If enough of us chip in, John and his
wife can get away for a bit, significantly reducing the chance that she'll cut off his
PHP Mailing List privileges. ;)

For those who are wondering, this was my idea, not John's. I did ask for his
clearance and assured him that I'll take responsibility for any backlash. If you
don't like this idea, tell me, not him. Thanks a lot. :)

i've been struggling all the evening with the followsymlinks option in

installed the gentoo distro last days. i compiled an apache 2.0.47 by my
own (no gentoo "ebuild") and php 5 beta (that wouldn't have influence
anyhow on the symlink feature).

does anybody know bugs or some hint, why it doesn't work, even the
settings MUST be correct?!

my httpd.conf looks like this:

...blah blah blah...

 Options FollowSymLinks
 AllowOverride None

...blah...blah...

   Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
   AllowOverride None
   Order allow,deny
   Allow from all

...

as u can see, there's always the option enabled... I'm tired now gn8

[PHP] Matchmaking System

2003-10-27 Thread Becoming Digital
A most amusing project has just come my way. I have a client who wishes to start an
online matchmaking/dating service, one not unlike Match.com or Yahoo! Personals.
There is a rather unique twist to this service, one that I cannot publicly discuss,
but in general terms it is no different than any other such offering.

Is anyone aware of any pre-existing framework(s) for a matchmaking application?
Perhaps someone knows of an article/tutorial regarding the design of such an app.
I've no problem doing this from scratch, in fact the idea rather intrigues me, but I'm
not one to re-invent the wheel if I can avoid it.

Thanks a lot to all those who respond.

If this server is for anything beyond internal development, you should seriously
reconsider using Apache 2 with PHP. As has been said numerous times and is very well

I know this doesn't answer your question but hopefully it prevents further questioning

Upgraded to: php 4.3.3

and after that GD stoped working...

i did check on phpinfo(); and it came up with:
gd

  GD Version bundled (2.0.15 compatible)
  GIF Read Support enabled
  PNG Support enabled
  WBMP Support enabled
  XBM Support enabled

Was there any problems or anything that i missed after gd upgrade and php
upgrade? i tried to look at change log but didn't find anything that would
solve it, its just gd doesn't work and i can't fix it, php just doesn't
recognizes gd functions.
So does anybody know what problem could be? or any links that i should check
about new updates in versions?

Thanks!

Moodle.Org, an OpenSource project, needs help.

We need someone to help program a module to import WebCT quiz data into Moodle.

Any takers with a big heart for a worthwhile educational project?

The word from internals is that this is a feature.

Please post some of your code. It is incredibly difficult to help you without it.

I hadn't thought of it that way. I run everything through a code cleaner to prevent
just that, but it might be nice to stop doing so.

For small blocks of HTML, I'm inclined to agree. I still prefer that large blocks be
printed "plainly," both from an editing and (slight) performance standpoint, but I see
where you're coming from.

It's optional, so you can feel free to include it if it makes you happy.
But from a library standpoint, it's generally just a hassle to include
it and then pray you didn't have some whitespace following. IMHO the
code is cleaner if it has no HTML content (unless via print or echo) and
you don't include the closing tag.

Rob.

[PHP] Zip Code Locator / Radius Search

2003-11-20 Thread Becoming Digital
I need a "search by zip code," aka radius search feature for a current project. I
know I've seen info on how this works but I can't seem to find it. I guess my own
search abilities are malfunctioning. Would someone be so kind as to point me to a
link? Thanks a lot.

Thanks. I checked the Repository, but apparently not in the right sections. Don't
you think it would be more appropriate in the "Geography" section? :-P
