anti-aliasing (on the Mac client), either in the subsequent developer snapshots
or the official release you guys let get out the door.

[opensource-dev] Enhanced Script Editor Request

2010-10-20 Thread malachi
Of all the developers who are working on the client someone has to be
smart enough to implement this.

For you windows developers who are using Visual Studio, When you type a
function name and get to the ( point of the function it pops a tip up
telling you what is needed to complete this function. I believe it is
called intellisense. I could be mistaken. Why can we not have the same
type of script editor? An auto complete type of compiler for the editor.
As we type in our scripts popups would help us complete what it is we are
typing. this would increase speed of script writing, help beginners learn
LSL programming faster, and simplify the process. this is just my
thoughts. it is already implemented in LSLEditor just figured it could be
done in the client as well.

Re: [opensource-dev] Project-MESH viewer

2010-10-20 Thread Kent Quirk (Q Linden)
So our old version of full-screen antialiasing (FSAA) was causing crashes. We
have made changes to the supporting infrastructure for stability; these changes
meant that some machines that used to do FSAA no longer could.

We had a bug under windows that was causing the new mechanism to break. We
fixed that for windows -- but we have another issue on macs. There is code in
the mesh viewer that supports FSAA on macs; it's a bit big to pull over easily
to viewer-development.

It was my fault that I didn't realize that our fix to 2.2 didn't address macs
properly until quite late in the release process. We chose to ship without the
feature on Macs for this release. Macs are a small subset of our user base, and
this feature only affects a subset of those users, and we felt that we should
not hold up release for this issue. It's also my fault that I didn't call it
out for release noting. I'm sorry about that.

We do intend to restore full functioning FSAA on all capable platforms soon,
hopefully with 2.3. If this affected you, I apologize.

Re: [opensource-dev] Tools of the trade.

2010-10-20 Thread Kent Quirk (Q Linden)
We've been having this discussion internally for some time. There's a lot of
friction because a) we have to update lots of developers, and b) we have to
rebuild all the libraries and distribute them internally.

We've been working on a tool called autobuild which will automate this process;
it's almost ready. It should make it lots easier for us as well as opensource
developers to get a build up and running, and will centralize the tool
decisions so that we can finally upgrade fairly easily.

hover the mouse over the highlighted function name and you get a tip
popup showing the functions prototype. Personally I prefer this to
environments where the popup happens automatically - the popup would be
a distraction for the functions I use really frequently and never need
reminding about their parameters but I'll use the tip to remind myself
of the correct parameter order for those I use infrequently. Perhaps
this should be a selectable behaviour - Theres already a hook to spot
when a function name is typed and highlight it, possibly leverage that
and have function tip popups in the editor be on-hover, on-highlight or off?

I think the idea here is to have the popup capable of doing
auto-completion. This would save a load of time, as well as make it
easier to script, IMHO.

An alternative would be to expand the usefulness of the code insert
dropdown by having it add the parens and properties for events and
functions using default values/place holders such as is seen in the
hover tips.

I have the same problem as Suezanne. When I use the popup is usually for

lol... That comment reminds me of this (tongue-in-cheek,) graphic
representing the learning curves for a variety of common editors:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/steverowe/archive/2004/11/17/code-editor-learning-curves.aspx

vi indeed... I'm a pico guy myself, but I'll stoop to using
Programmer's Notepad, TextWrangler, or even Eclipse depending on
platform and language... All I ever learnt of vi was how to quit, and
that took some hunting and help!

Re: [opensource-dev] Enhanced Script Editor Request

2010-10-20 Thread malachi
I didn't mean add something that would allow editing in an external
program. It is bad enough on older machines to run SL alone. and opening
multiple programs is not enough. Perhaps tool tips are a bit out of the
way i agree with others that the tooltip can sometimes be annoying. but
instead maybe a drop down list at the position of the cursor that allows
you to pick a function and autocomplete it? and what about user functions?
string foo(list in,integer index) or something. when you use it it should
pop up in the drop down list as well. the drop down should not be limited
to the LL preset functions. real editors do not restrain you to only the
preset functions.

Alas, so many generations of coder who learned vi from someone who already
didn't know vi.

You will note that Google's new keyboard commands are vi commands. There is
a reason for this.

I do sometimes wonder what happened to i, ii, iii, iv, and v, though.
Must be like that "Leonard Part 6" movie Bill Cosby did in the early
