[Mailman-Users] GID Errors...

2000-12-27 Thread Jason

Hey I was wondering If I installed mailman with spm (slackware package
manager) because for some reason I can't install it from source.
I installed the rpm version and its giving me GID errors... I was
wondering if there is a way to change the GID of mailman or change the
GID of the group or something to make mailman work?

Is that possible...
change the GID of a rpm installed on a slackware system.

[Mailman-Users] Abnormal problem with mailman.

2000-12-28 Thread Jason

Yeh I installed mailman via rpm on my slackware system (really really
long explanation... because it wouldn't compile on the box... something
about ginstall) anyhow... Now I'm getting errors with the
GID I was wondering how I would go abouts changing the GID of either
Mailman or Of the cgi user?

If anyone would know how to do that. Because I can't recompile it with
--cgi-gid because it won't compile... thats why I installed it via
rpm (slackware package manager actually)...

Any ideas on how to help me out would be appreciated ...

Thanks again :)

[Mailman-Users] Possible Bug!!!

2001-01-17 Thread Jason

Yes I was wondering if this would be a bug.

I can make a mailing list via the ./newlist
name
email
address
password

and then
press to send the confirmation email.

Ok that works fine.

But here is where the trouble starts. If I run the Mailman newlist all
on one command.
Example : ./newlist mailinglistname [EMAIL PROTECTED] secretpassword
then it ask's me to press to send the confirmation email...

I still get the confirmation email with the password in it.
I click on the link which brings me to the authentication page.
Putting in the password that I inserted does nothing but bring up the
authentication failed page. It looks as like the lists are created
without a password when I run mailman on one single command line.

Is this normal? is this a bug? anyone else experience something like
that? if so how can I fix it...
I really have to get it to run on a single command line so that I can
put a script in the cron to add mailing lists.

Thanks again

[Mailman-Users] Sendmail problems!

2001-02-05 Thread Jason

I was wondering if anyone else was having problems with sendmail setting
up mailman
I have it all compiled and the cgi works fine ... but I can't get
sendmail to recieve the confirmation email
of mailman. I believe that this is due to the fact that I don't have
the right relay-domain settings (as I can't find documentation anywhere
on what this file should look like)

Any little tidbit of help would be apprecitated.

As far as I can tell I've set everything up correctly. As you can see
I've put the unsub file in /home/mailman/bin, but the testlist-remove
alias does reflect that path correctly (and I've tried /home/mailman as
well). I've made sure that the permissions on unsub are correct and that
my site password is in the unsub script. Suggestions? Thanks for any
ideas.

[Mailman-Users] Question

2005-04-03 Thread Jason
I'm fairly new at using mailman I transferred some lists over to it I ran on
another system.

Sometimes when I invite people rather then the return address being
list-request it is list-bounces so when they goto confirm there subscription
it goes to the bouces account and nothing happens.

Is there a way to fix this. It doesn't happen all the time.

2005-04-05 Thread Jason
I personally every once and a while send a who request to mailman and add
the emails to a unadvertised/moderated All-Users list.
It seems to work pretty good for me when I want to email all the people on
all my lists. And it also saves them getting multiple copies of the email if
they are on more then 1 list.

Hi there. I'm operating a Mailman list-the software is provided with our
Hostway account. They are using version 2.06. Our subscribers are
complaining about having to remember or retrieve their password before
unsubscribing. Is there any way to allow them to unsubscribe without a

unsubscribe issue is a big problem for us at the moment.

Thanks for your help.

Have the From as a textbox field and the To as a hidden field.

I did that with my mail server before I started using mailman

Re: [Mailman-Users] a question about extracting mail list

2005-04-11 Thread Jason
There are a few ways. If you are moving to another mailman system you can
just copy the directory for the list to the new system.

You could email[EMAIL PROTECTED]
and in the body put
who listpassword
and it will email you back a list of all the emails in the list IF the
people don't have themself setup as hidden.

And then import that list into your new listserver.

[Mailman-Users] clearing nomail bounce flags for all lists

Hi,

I'm wondering if someone has a withlist script that we can use for clearing
the nomail bounce flags from all members of all lists? We had some trouble
with our system's IP being flagged for spam by AT&T, and a lot of users
ended up bouncing. I found a post with an old script, but that was from
around 2010. This is on Mailman 2.

Thanks!

[Mailman-Users] mod_ruid2 and jail apache affects on mailman

2022-10-29 Thread jason
Hi,

On our cPanel server, I'm getting the following message in the security
advisor:

Apache vhosts are not segmented or chroot()ed.

Enable "mod_ruid2" in the "EasyApache 4" area, enable "Jail Apache" in the
"Tweak Settings" area, and change users to jailshell in the "Manage Shell
Access" area. Consider a more robust solution by using "CageFS on
CloudLinux". Note that this may break the ability to access mailman via
Apache.

I'm concerned about the mention of breaking Mailman via apache. Can anyone
explain this? I would like to enable these security options, but we host
many lists, so don't want to break anything.

Using the default install on RedHat 9, you do not have the Base URL option,
only the host name option. I have the same problem currently and have not
figured out a way around it. My older version on my RH 7.3 box has the
option. I've looked everyone for this setting but it evades me.

I am running mailman mailman-2.1-8 on a newly installed RedHat 9 box.

Re: [Mailman-Users] porky.devel.redhat.com

2003-07-15 Thread Jason Buscema
Actually I have had the same issue with my mailman setup on a RedHat 9
box. There is no option under the General Options for the Base URL
settings. I am running mailman-2.1-8 which comes w/ RedHat 9. Perhaps
there is something wrong with this rpm.

[Mailman-Users] Footer message in html email

2003-07-15 Thread Jason Buscema
Is there any way to have a footer message in an HTML email message? From
what I have read, the answer is no, but figured there might be a workaround.
I need to be able to send a personalized link in the footer message, which
Mailman does wonderfully, but the email is HTML. Any ideas?

Re: [Mailman-Users] Footer message in html email

2003-07-15 Thread Jason Buscema
Ha... I'm in the same boat really... I discouraged the client from sending
HTML emails, but they insisted. The email recipients actually prefer the
HTML vs plain text now, to my surprise. We use Mailman to send the daily
emails, but we do not use Mailman for list management (at least for this
list). The management is handled through the web site itself (skyy.com)
using MySql. A user creates an account, then from there they can subscribe
to a list. We want the daily messages to have a link with a unique ID in it
for a quick unsubscribe. I had the method all worked out, then we went w/
HTML emails :(

Re: [Mailman-Users] Footer message in html email

2003-07-15 Thread Jason Buscema
I don't fully agree although I'm not a big fan of html emails myself. We use
it on the SKYY Vodka website for users that want to receive a daily drink
recipe and/or want to receive a quarterly newsletter type thing. Its an
entertainment website. We've always given the users the option for either
plain or html and recently more people have chosen HTML, even for the daily
message. The daily message consists of a unique recipe with a picture of the
drink and Skyy flavor, etc.

Regardless, I still need to figure out a way to have a personalized footer
message in an HTML message. Changing the message from HTML to plain text
isn't an option either.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Footer message in html email

2003-07-15 Thread Jason Buscema
This puts me back to my original post... the reason I want to have a
personalized footer message in my HTML emails is so that a user can click
the link to unsubscribe. Again, we don't use Mailman management for this
list. If the user is getting tired of HTML emails, they can click a link and
change to plain text, or they click another link and be removed from the
list completely. Pretty simple really... we're just giving the user an
option on how they want to clutter their inbox.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Footer message in html email

2003-07-15 Thread Jason Buscema
Sorry for the confusion. I use Mailman for all my lists that I run. For this
specific list I use Mailman for everything except user management. This part
is handled through a MySql DB and syncs w/ Mailman each night. If I didn't
have to do HTML I wouldn't, but in this case I need to do it.

That said... Does the same hold true for a header as it does for a footer?
Thanks for the info... I don't have too much experience w/ HTML emails.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Footer message in html email

2003-07-16 Thread Jason Buscema
In my specific instance, no list member posts to the list. Its a one-way
list only. I use mime-mail to generate the HTML message each day then send
to the Mailman list. So this *could* be a solution.

In the past with HTML messages we've stuck text at the bottom but it has
been part of the HTML message itself. In this case, I need to have the
personalization of Mailman. There are other ways I can do it, such as have
mime-mail and PHP generate a unique email for each user, but I really want
to avoid going that for many reasons.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Footer message in html email

2003-07-16 Thread Jason Buscema
But how can I use the Mailman footer so its personalized? I want to do
something like this in the Mailman footer:

If you want to unsubscribe from this list then go to
http://mydomain.com/unsubscribe.php?id=%(user_name)s

This is in its simplest form, but you get the idea. I can make a footer in
my html message, but it will be HTML and Mailman can't add its
personalization to it.

[Mailman-Users] New to mailman

2003-08-12 Thread Jason Williams
Hello everyone.
Well, im brand new to mailman, but im very eager to get started.
I wanted to ask a few questions to see if mailman is what im looking for.
Basically, I need a mailing list manager to manage about 6 or so lists.
Nothing fancy. It is going to be used exclusively for our intranet, to
email our employees and certain departments.

With that in mind, I noticed that mailman requires apache to run, as it
allows users to subscribe and unsubscribe from lists.
This is really a little overkill for our needs as I explained earlier.

With that in mind, is mailman still something that would suit our needs?
Granted, my personal perference is to keep our mail server as streamlined
as possible, with as little services running as possible.

Anyone care to share their thoughts and suggestions?

I appreciate it.

Cheers,

Jason

[Mailman-Users] problems setting up mailman

Hello everyone...

Well, im in the process of setting up Mailman on my server...
The server is running RH 8.0.
I went ahead and downloaded the RPM from Red Hat and it installed Apache as

I followed the directions in the httpd-mailman.conf file and copied it over
to my httpd.conf

I fired up apache and went to http://localhost/mailman

And was prompted with the page...

Where I am now having problems is how to setup my lists...

I have been reading through the README file that comes with the tarball,
and tried going to: http://localhost/mailman/create but I get a page not
found...

So im missing something and not sure what it is...

Im running postfix on this server...what do I need to do, if anything, to
configure mailman and postfix to work together correctly?

I have not been able to find anything as far as documentation so far...

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thank you.

[Mailman-Users] Mailman and Postfix install

2003-08-29 Thread Jason Williams
Hello everyone...

Well, I took the advice of some people on this list and im ditching the RH
rpm that I used and im going to compile mailman from source...better anyway..

I just have two questions I need clarified:

--with-mail-gid=
From reading this, I should set the group the group I specified for
postfix correct? In that case, the group I created was postfix...so just
postfix?

--with-cgi-gid=
Simple enough...using apache, apache is the winner..
Last part: Do I need to recompile postfix at all to get mailman and postfix
to work together? Or is there another option to get these two compiled?

Thanks for your help...

[Mailman-Users] Need some clarification on my mailman setup

2003-10-01 Thread Jason Williams
Hello everyone.

Im new to mailman, but so far, I seem to be having good luck with my setup.
Im running postfix-2.0.15 on my mail server. (Followed the directions on
setting up mailman with postfix)
Also running Mailman-2.1.2.
Procmail-3.22.
Running IMAP on this server as well (Courier-IMAP)

I've setup a few lists that I am in the process of testing.
Here is a snip from my maillog when I send the email to the list:
Oct 1 12:56:07 corpmail postfix/smtpd[15297]: connect from
jwilliams[192.168.1.90]
Oct 1 12:56:07 corpmail postfix/smtpd[15297]: 14B48AB543:
client=jwilliams[192.168.1.90]
Oct 1 12:56:07 corpmail postfix/cleanup[15300]: 14B48AB543:

Oct 1 12:56:07 corpmail postfix/local[15301]: 14B48AB543:

(maildir)
Oct 1 12:56:07 corpmail postfix/smtpd[15297]: disconnect from

Oct 1 12:56:09 corpmail postfix/smtpd[15297]: connect from corpmail[127.0.0.1]
Oct 1 12:56:09 corpmail postfix/smtpd[15297]: 49375AB543:
client=corpmail[127.0.0.1]
Oct 1 12:56:09 corpmail postfix/cleanup[15300]: 49375AB543:

Oct 1 12:56:09 corpmail postfix/qmgr[14919]: 49375AB543:

Oct 1 12:56:09 corpmail postfix/smtpd[15297]: disconnect from

Oct 1 12:56:09 corpmail postfix/local[15301]: 49375AB543:

("|/usr/bin/procmail -m /etc/procmailrc")
Oct 1 12:56:09 corpmail postfix/local[15301]: 49375AB543:
to=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, relay=local, delay=0, status=sent
("|/usr/bin/procmail -m /etc/procmailrc")

Just a few questions im not clear about.

First:
Oct 1 12:56:07 corpmail postfix/local[15301]: 14B48AB543:
to=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, relay=local, delay=0, status=sent
(maildir)

On this entry, is it delivering mail to a user called loan_processors? I
dont have a user called loan_processors...is this correct? Did I miss
something?

Second:
Oct 1 12:56:09 corpmail postfix/qmgr[14919]: 49375AB543:
from=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, size=1833, nrcpt=2 (queue
active)

I dont understand this line: What is the purpose of the
from=

It seems to me that it worked correctly, but im just trying to make sure my
list is working correctly, i understand it and that I dont have anything
misconfigured.

Anyone care to help me out and clarify a few things?
I would be very greatful for any insight and recommendations.
Cheers

Jason

[Mailman-Users] Help: Question on settings

2003-10-07 Thread Jason Williams
Hello everyone.

I'm having a problem with some settings on Mailman; Specifically, when
people send to the list, the message has to be approved first.

I've looked under the settings for the list, but I cant seem to figure out
how to shut that off. I just want people to be able to send the my list(s)
without having to have approval. Where can I fix that?

Secondly, im running postfix and I saw this in my maillog, and not sure
what i means:

Oct 7 11:04:40 corpmail postfix/qmgr[16470]: 76698AB549:
from=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, size=1634, nrcpt=1 (queue active)

mailman-bounces can someone tell me what that is?

I appreciate everyones help.

[Mailman-Users] domain name switch ignored by mailman

2002-01-04 Thread Jason Signalness

Hello,

I recently installed mailman onto a Red Hat 7.1 box running sendmail.
Mailman works great, except that I have reconfigured it to use the
cyclend.com domain name as the default. It was originally set to
something else.

It seems to ignore this setting and, when emailing outgoing messages
(like password reminders) it uses the old domain name. I want to
abolish this old domain name, but am unsure how to go about doing so.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

[Mailman-Users] DEFAULT_URL, DEFAULT_HOSTNAME

2002-04-11 Thread Jason Signalness

I have a problem. Some of the email being sent out by mailman (password
reminders, etc.) are coming from an incorrect DEFAULT_URL.

For example, mail has a "from" field of dsl1234.bti.com, which is
outdated. It should be set to cyclend.org. The URL they are coming from
is the same as the one specified in Defaults.py.

The problem is that I have overridden these variables in the mm_cfg.py.
For some reason, the values in mm_cfg.py don't seem to be taking affect.

Thanks,

2002-10-09 Thread Jason Bodnar

My regular mail is handled by mail.broadq.com. I've got an mx record for

DEFAULT_HOST_NAME = 'lists.broadq.com'
DEFAULT_URL   = 'http://www.broadq.com/cgi-bin/mailman/'
MAILMAN_OWNER = 'mailman-owner@%s' % DEFAULT_HOST_NAME

[Mailman-Users] posting filters query

2001-04-20 Thread Jason Wright

howdy...

i'm running internal lists for my company on mailman 2.0.4 with python 2.0
under solaris 7. say that our domain name is example.com.

i'm trying to set things up so that *@example.com can post to the lists but
all other addresses are held for approval as explained here:

http://mail.python.org/pipermail/mailman-users/2001-February/009828.html

teo de hesselle responded, suggesting using a regex:

http://mail.python.org/pipermail/mailman-users/2001-February/009835.html

neither post says exactly which configuration option that regex should go in,
but it seems to me that 'posters' is the correct place. if i use the
following

moderated = 0
member_posting_only = 1
posters = ['.*@example\\.com']

and post from [EMAIL PROTECTED], an address which is not subscribed to the
list, the post is held for approval.

if i change 'posters' to

posters = ['.*@example\\.com', '[EMAIL PROTECTED]']

then posts from [EMAIL PROTECTED] go through, so it seems that 'posters'
doesn't accept regular expressions.

am i tweaking the wrong settings?

[Mailman-Users] Mass Unsubscribe?? - Convert from MajorDomo

2001-05-02 Thread Jason Maderios

Gang,

I am in the midst of evaluating mailman for our mailing list. We
currently use Majordomo by way of a hosting company and we are
considering managing the list internally. All I can say about the
install is WOW! Great docs, and everything worked as advertised. I had
missed one line in the docs about setting the GID at configure time if
my web server used something other than nobody as it's user. Even the
error I saw when I first fired up my browser told me where I had erred..
Thanks to anyone out there who worked on the Docs...

Any way my real question is this. I created a text file with a bunch of
dups and thousands of emails to see how easy it was to import records (I
have about 200,000 adr's I am going to have to import). It all worked
great but how do I MASS unsubscribe all those bogus adrs??? Also where
does mailman keep the email adr's at? Is it a flat file? Can I edit it
directly?

Any Help would be appreciated...

Why do it that way? Instead, use an MX record to send it ot that
machine, and have that machine forward it in.

Normally this would work. But for buisness practaces I want/need to
change that field to anything I wan't it to be.

if the list server is inside the firewall, how is the web interface
getting out? another proxy?

Web interface can only be accessed by VPN and LAN.

2001-11-19 Thread Jason Signalness

Hello all,

I just installed Mailman and all seems well, except for one thing. Mailman
seems to think my mail server is at one host while it is actually at another.

The URLs it sends out in its emails is correct, but the host name for email
is incorrect. I have changed it in the mm_cfg.py file, but it still
doesn't listen.

Any ideas?

[Mailman-Users] What did I do wrong?

2001-12-06 Thread Jason Clark

I know I've got a simple problem, I'm just not getting where I need to, and
am tired of complaints from users. I've had mailman up and running for a
month, but I needed it working before I had all the little questions like
this worked out. I don't recall exactly what values I typed in during the
install, but when messages come out from the list, the mailto: tags are
correct, but the web page links are not correct. See the sample below.

Where did I go wrong in the install?
Can I fix it via the administration web page & where? (I tried changing
the options on the bottom of the general screen and it doesn't save the change)
hostname: mail.usmale.org
base url: /mailman/
Do I need to fix it by rerunning the setup process? (this won't destroy
the lists I have already setup. Right?)

[Mailman-Users] Email address tag

2001-12-18 Thread Jason Newkid

I've spent the past 7 hours upgrading a server from freebsd 2.2 to 4.4 and
mailman 1.0 with python 1.5.1 to the current version. FUN FUN FUN

In the past few months I've noticed more and more people signing up for
lists using services that offer mail redirects. The problem is when they
bounce I can't find the original email address it was sent to.
What im looking for is the mailman tag to represent email address the email
was sent to.

So hopefully in the footer i can put
This email was sent to % mm_user_email . (or like MM-User-Email)

and maybe in the header put
X-MailMan-Sent-To: % mm_user_email (or like MM-User-Email)

But what is the syntax or tag to print the users' email address in an email?

I was not able to find it after going through the 45 megs of archives.

[Mailman-Users] nested

2004-02-25 Thread Jason Williams
I have 4 lists, one of them only has members specified as the other lists.
If I post to that nested list I assumed that the people on any of those
lists would get the message. Instead I find that the message is held.
I have tried configuring he lists so that only list members can post to
them, and then made the nested list a list member. This has not worked.

What do I have to do to be able to post to the nested list, and for that
message to auto get out to the other list who make up the membership of the
nested list?

Very much appreciated, sorry for the rookie question, Jason.

[Mailman-Users] virtualhost and "list creator" password?

2004-03-07 Thread Jason Parsons
I'm using the add_virtualhost directive to create multiple mailman
virtual hosts. I've been unable to find the answer to one issue,
though:

Is it possible to give assign an owner/password for each virtual host,
allowing that owner to create/delete lists on that virtual host without
having rights to any other virtual host? The only thing I find is
mmsitepass, which seems to apply globally.

Any pointers appreciated.

I have installed the Qmail Handler from

handler by copying it to $prefix/Mailman/Handlers/Qmail.py. I have the
following in my mm_cfg.py:

DELIVERY_MODULE = 'Qmail'
QMAIL_CMD = '/var/qmail-lists/bin/qmail-inject'
DO_QMAIL_VERP = 1
QMAIL_LOG_SUCCESS = 1
QMAIL_LOG_FAILURE = 1
QMAIL_LOG_EVERY_MESSAGE = 1
.. however, outgoing messages are not VERPed. Any ideas what I might
be missing?

I am very familiar with qmail, not as familiar with mailman, and I have
read the archives, for what it's worth. ;)

[Mailman-Users] Several questions

2004-03-08 Thread Price, Jason
I am in the process of installing mailman at my company, and have a few
questions that I've been unable to figure out. Hopefully, you all can help
me out here...

1. How can I display a "friendly name" in the "from" field? Currently, I
have it displaying the mailing list address, but I'd much prefer it to
display text of my choosing, and eliminate the "on behalf of" information.
Is this possible?

2. I'd like to display the same "friendly name" in the "to" field of
mailing list messages.

3. What the easiest way to control the bounced messages destination? Is it
possible to provide an explicit destination for bounced messages, or does
this have to be done via the aliases file?

Thanks.

I'm testing out DIGEST subscriptions.
Is it possible to change the email formats, specifically:

a) they appear to come from?[EMAIL PROTECTED]
I'd like to include a descriptive text for the FROM field.
   eg:
   '"Talk Mailing List" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>'

b) the subject line?
eg: talk Digest, Vol 12, Issue 1

I had a look at the code in senddigests but it's not there.
  I'd like to customise these

[Mailman-Users] Base URL for web interface with 2.1.4

I think so, yes. you don't need to setup anything additionally. Everything
after and including the plus is just ignored by sendmail unless you put up
special aliases for catching them.

[Mailman-Users] Python: High CPU Load

2004-05-06 Thread Jason Shouler
We run an announcement only list of about 25K members on a IBM Netfinity
5500 (1 GB RAM) running SuSE 8.0.

Mailman 2.1.4 performs very well except for the web interface which is
slow at the best of times and can even time-out during an active mail shot.

This is a snapshot of "ps aux" showing a cpu load of over 96% generated
from doing a member search.

wwwrun7469 96.1 2.0 22680 20968 ? R12:14 0:05
/usr/bin/python -S /usr/local/mailman/scripts/driver admin

No errors in the error log.

Would anyone like to comment on how "normal" they'd consider this?

Regards,

Jason.

[Mailman-Users] High CPU Load

2004-05-30 Thread Jason Shouler
Can anyone offer any suggestions on resolving a high cpu load with Python.
We're using Mailman 2.1.4, Python 2.3.3, Sendmail & Amavis to support an
announcement only list of about 40k members on an IBM Netfinity server
(1 Gb RAM).

During list activity CPU load will often exceed 90% with the load being
spread fairly evenly between active qrunners (e.g. command, outgoing &
virgin runners).

This I can live with but what I can't live with is the 98% load
generated from the web admin interface (driver admin script) which
effectively makes the interface unusable. In fact mailmanctl must be
shut down in order to do any remote administration at all!

I've scoured the archives and also tried most options within 'mm_cfg.py'
all without success.

It's probably worth pointing out that the same issues existed with
previous versions of Python and Mailman.

Suggestions anyone?

Re: [Mailman-Users] High CPU Load

2004-05-31 Thread Jason Shouler
Richard Barrett wrote:
What do you mean by list activity? Handling a single outgoing post or

Activity should be pretty minimal - one outgoing post a week and that's
about it. What appears to be creating the heaviest load is the bounce
runner which with something over 3000 messages in it's queue looks a
likely culprit (or rather I guess the messages are).

I'm not sure how the bounce queue fits in with the bounce mechanism?
Are these actually queued messages waiting for delivery or are they
already dead!I've looked at a few and they would appear to belong to
unsubscribed members??

Is outgoing mail via the MTA on the Mailman server? What sort of
values are are using for SMTP_MAX_RCPTS?
All services are running on the one server. Sendmail is fairly well
optimized and takes submissions from Mailman via the MSA port which is
configured to avoid DNS.SMTP_MAX_RCPTS = 10 and VERP is enabled for
everything other than normal postings and of course the SMTPPORT is changed.

Basically Mailman works very well aside from the heavy load issue.
As is often the case in these situations, after almost giving up, I've
now found the web interface is usable again.

All the queue runners are clear apart from the bounce runner which is
going up very gradually at the moment. When I see it going down I'll be
a lot happier.

Jason.

[Mailman-Users] selected members to announcements only? (newbie)

2004-06-25 Thread Jason Davies
I just walked into one of those etiquette discussion joining this
morning, didn't I?:-)

Please indulge a really basic question. I have searched for
'announcements only' in the FAQ Wizard and looked at the Mailman
interface on my list. I am running Mailman version 2.0.13. I am not an
expert...I was given this list to run because I am a webmaster of the
relevant site. The software is configured by the college.

Some members of the list wish to receive announcements only rather than
the rather messy (but on-topic) discussions that have grown up. Is it
possible within the same list to do this (eg to only have them receive
my posts?) Or should I set up an announcement only list entirely
separately? Thanks for any help (I suspect the latter but you never
know...)

[Mailman-Users] Migrating lists

2004-08-07 Thread Jason Dixon
I have a number of mailman lists that I'm attempting to migrate from an
older OpenBSD server running Mailman 2.1.2 to a new RHEL server running
Mailman 2.1.5. I built the new version from source, setting the
mail-gid (postfix) and cgi-gid (apache) accordingly. I then copied
over everything in /var/spool/mailman and set permissions for mailman
ownership.

Unfortunately, it appears that the mailing lists will need additional
manipulation to get them working properly. I'm seeing the following
errors when sending test mails to a list:

Diagnostic-Code: X-Postfix; Command died with status 2:
"/usr/local/mailman/mail/mailman post hatchet-users". Command
output: Group
mismatch error. Mailman expected the mail wrapper script to be
executed as
group "postfix", but the system's mail server executed the mail
script as
group "nobody". Try tweaking the mail server to run the script as
group
"postfix", or re-run configure, providing the command line option
`--with-mail-gid=nobody'.

What can I do to resolve this? Do I need to manually dump/restore list
configurations from the old server (if so, how)?

Thanks in advance,

[Mailman-Users] Message digest/archive oddity ...

2005-08-18 Thread Jason LaMar
Sorry about that. Let's try this again.

A list subscriber submitted an HTML e-mail message from Outlook with a Word
attachment. It came across as a multi-part MIME, with these content type
headers (in this order):

--=_NextPart_000_0001_01C5A33B.DBC4C170
Content-Type: multipart/alternative;
boundary="=_NextPart_001_0002_01C5A33B.DBC4C170"

--=_NextPart_001_0002_01C5A33B.DBC4C170
Content-Type: text/plain;
charset="us-ascii"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

--=_NextPart_001_0002_01C5A33B.DBC4C170
Content-Type: text/html;
charset="us-ascii"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

--=_NextPart_000_0001_01C5A33B.DBC4C170
Content-Type: application/msword;
name="advice to faculty.doc"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Disposition: attachment;
filename="advice to faculty.doc"

The body text of the message was under both the text/plain (unformatted) and
text/html (formatted) areas, and the message and attachment both rendered
fine for non-digest recipients.

Yet in both the digest and the archives, this message was simply listed as:

Skipped content of type multipart/alternative-- next part
--
A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
Name: advice to faculty.doc
Type: application/msword
Size: 29696 bytes
Desc: not available

What happened? Why did the body of the message disappear? And how do I
prevent this from happening again?

[Mailman-Users] Digest "flag" in membership list? ...

2005-09-07 Thread Jason LaMar
A disclaimer: I realize our implementation is not at all what was intended
for "typical" Mailman usage, but ...

We have lists where:

* the subscribers don't know their individual passwords for Web access

* the subscribers don't have Web access to Mailman subscription features

* we (the admins) manually control whether subscribers get to use digest
mode, based on their e-mail requests

The lists are set up this way because this is the main "campus-wide
alert/announcement system" for e-mail, so we want to guarantee that everyone
is SUPPOSED to get every message sent to these lists.

OK, so here's the kicker. Based on a somewhat transient user population (we
regularly lose and add a small fraction of students, and sometimes even
employees), we've developed an external script to regularly cross-check the
current subscriber list and then update it with subscriber additions and
removals as necessary.

Unfortunately, when the lists are "refreshed," all individual subscriber
parameters (like digest mode) are wiped out to their defaults. So my
question is: Is there some sort of flag associated with each subscriber
entry that indicates digest usage, that we should be sure not to touch
during the list refresh? Or, to put it more broadly, how would you suggest
doing backend (non-subscriber) list maintenance that doesn't impact
individual subscriber preferences?

Thanks,

Jason

[Mailman-Users] third-level domains

2005-09-14 Thread Jason Pfingstmann
First off, to give you all a general overview:
1 Web Server - handles domain.com, www.domain.com requests
2 Mail Server - Postfix using virtual domains from mySQL DB

I have mailman on the mail server (since it seems to require this) and so
installed apache on it. DNS points all domains "mail.domain.com" to the
mail server. Since the mailman user access and admin access pages are
pointed to the domain of the list, using mail.domain.com makes sense for
lists. So [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The issue is, I have the following in my mm_cfg.py:
POSTFIX_STYLE_VIRTUAL_DOMAINS = ['mail.azxws.com']
add_virtualhost('mail.azxws.com')

I have postfix transport for mail.azxws.com set to virtual
When I am the mailman user and do ./bin/newlist [EMAIL PROTECTED], I get
an e-mail to the admin account I specify with links to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], not mail.azxws.com.
Also, when I send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] I get an error that it
loops back upon itself, and when I try [EMAIL PROTECTED] I get an error that
the user doesn't exist (since azxws.com is a virtual domain that has
e-mail addresses used by it).

Please let me know what might help troubleshoot this. I'm at my wits end.
 Thanks.

[Mailman-Users] [Fixed] third-level domains

2005-09-15 Thread Jason Pfingstmann
I was having issues with sub domains. (Sorry, not TLD, thinko). Here's
what I did so others might be helped by this:

mm_cfg.py:
MTA = "Postfix"
OWNERS_CAN_DELETE_THEIR_OWN_LISTS = Yes
POSTFIX_STYLE_VIRTUAL_DOMAINS = ['lists.domain.com','lists.domain2.com']
add_virtualhost('lists.domain.com','lists.domain.com')
add_virtualhost('lists.domain2.com','lists.domain2.com')

Defaults.py (Just lists the following, and not for all domains, just 1
entry):
DEFAULT_EMAIL_HOST = 'mail.domain.com'
DEFAULT_URL_HOST = 'lists.domain.com'

That got it to work. I hope this helps someone else, I'm sure that there
may be more elegant ways to do this. If I missed the point on something,
please correct me. Thanks.

[Mailman-Users] Unsubscribing via e-mail ...

2005-09-30 Thread Jason LaMar
I just want to confirm that it's possible for a list member to unsubscribe
from a list via e-mail -- with an e-mail reply confirmation, rather than any
sort of password confirmation -- if they send a blank message to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Also, what if this message ISN'T blank? Will Mailman disregard and message
body content, assuming this address is correct for the list?

Thanks,

Jason

[Mailman-Users] Mailman capacity?

2005-10-07 Thread Jason LaMar
We're creating a list with roughly 15,000 recipients. Can Mailman handle
this? And will the system "throttle" delivery of messages -- which should
only take place once a week, from the moderator -- to such a large list?

Re: [Mailman-Users] huge delays in email posts?

2006-01-11 Thread Jason (WeatherServer)
I've heard of other providers with this issue. It turned out there mail
systems had a limit of how much email per hour you could send out. Every
other email over that limit is just rejected until the next hour when your
limits are reset. Now you said they don't do throttling but could they be
doing this and just not counting it as part of there throttling process?

Subject: [Mailman-Users] huge delays in email posts?

Hi everyone,

I hope someone can help me out with this. I just last month has to
move my mailman list from one hosting company to another. The new
company has installed mailman 2.1.5 on the latest version of their
Plesk server. Everything seems to be running fine with the exception
of mail coming out of the server with delays up to 24 hours. I have
a moderated list and messages sent to it are immediately showing up
in the pending que.

I notice the delays in two areas. The first is pending notices
awaiting approval emails. I will often not get an email of a pending
post for hours or even a day after it appears in the pending que.
The second delay is after I approve the email. It will often not
show up in members inboxes for hours and even a day. The new hosting
company has been very patient and wanting to help, but they don't
know where to go from here. They are new to mailman.

I can tell you that they don't use email throttling. I know there
may be one or two crons that mailman may have set up, but they don't
know what they may be or what they do. Can anyone offer some advice
that I can pass on to them to check? Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
