No, it does not. Just send a message to t...@mydomain.com. If the end
destinations of the forwarder(s) exist, the message will be sent to all of them
if addressed to t...@mydomain.com.

I have several such forwarders to several addresses. They all work great.

Ah - you had a mailinglist with the same name as the mail address to be
forwarded. Possible that this does not work.

Good to hear that it works now.

[Mailman-Users] Addressing of list messages by the server

2021-02-10 Thread Christian Buser via Mailman-Users
Hi all

I have been asked by one of our list members about why the addressing of list
messages he receives varies and he likes to know why.

Some messages come with the following headers:

From: Sender Name via Listname
To: listn...@domain.com
Cc: Recepient Name

Other messages (on the same list, same recipient):

From: Sender Name <>
To: Listname
(and no Cc: header)

My questions - just to understand it, since the list seems to work perfectly:

1) What does cause this different addressing
2) How does the receiving mail server know where to deliver the message when
there is no Cc: field in the headers and the list address in the To: field?

In case it is important: Mailman 2.1.33 on cPanel.

Thank you, Christian

Hi Andrew

What does the "Subject:"-line in the mail header say? It could be that
the mail index in Mail.app is broken.

Can you check whether the address was subscribed before and is it really
removed?

I’d suggest you have your users to re-confirm any subscribes and
unsubscribes.

Hi Bruce

I never really understood the option ‘accept_these_nonmembers’ - but I
would anyway not use it.

If these are users who should be able to post messages but not want to
receive any messages, I would add them to the subscriber list and set
their mail delivery to "no message". In a cPanel installation, this is a
tick mark next to the address which needs to be set.

[Mailman-Users] Re: Need to add two addresses to a bunch of lists as allowed senders.

2021-04-10 Thread Christian Buser via Mailman-Users
Hi Jürgen

You need to get the other addresses of the users into your server anyway. I do
not think a user would subscribe with an address and then again with the other
- and probably he doesn’t even know that there is a possibility of a „silent“
subscription.

You have to maintain the list of „non-members whose messages are accepted“ the
same way. I do not see any automatism. Your „work load“ remains the same.

When a message needs moderation (because someone is subscribed with a different
address), I can manually add his „new“ address with the „no message“ option
ticked.

Our server does not send automated membership reminders or password reminders.

Hi Jessica

Since you have a cPanel installation, go to your cPanal page on the server
(mosst likely ), scroll down until you find the link for
"mailing lists" and select it.

Then just set up a new list by filling in the necessary fields. Of course, you
have then to configure the detail setup of your list.

I am not too sure about this. Here we have some internet providers who use more
than one domain for their email addresses. You can "freely change" the part
after the @ sign, and the mails are still delivered.

The same may apply to corporations who do business under several names, or for
companies that have been taken over by others.

[Mailman-Users] Illegal BOM?

2021-09-03 Thread Christian Buser via Mailman-Users
Hi all

I am using Mailman in a cPanel instalation - Mailman 2.1.33 on  cPanel
98.0.6 - and occasionally receive an error message like the one below:

  addr...@domain.ch
    host mx01.servicehoster.ch [194.191.24.200]
SMTP error from remote mail server after end of data:
550 Headers contain illegal byte order mark (BOM)
Reporting-MTA: dns; my.provider.eu

This happened today with  5 (of about 150) subscribers on 2 receiving
servers, but only every few days - not for every message. The message
for which these complaints had been received today have a header line
"X-Mailer: iPhone Mail (18G82)", but I think I have also seen others
before.

So far I could not yet find out why these messages are refused by the
receiving server, it could be a Mailman issue or an issue of the mail
program used by the author of the message.

Any ideas what could be done to prevent these errors?

Thank you,
Christian

[Mailman-Users] Messages from non-members

2021-11-16 Thread Christian Buser via Mailman-Users
Mailman 2.1.35 on cPanel version 98.0.12

The list is set to only accept messages from subscribers

Action to take for postings from non-members for which no explicit
action is defined (Details for generic_nonmember_action) is set to "Hold"

I receive a notification when someone tries to post using a
non-subscriber address.

The non-member receives this message (message #1):

Your mail to 'Infoline' with the subject

    Test non-member

Is being held until the list moderator can review it for approval.

The reason it is being held:

    Post by non-member to a members-only list

Either the message will get posted to the list, or you will receive
notification of the moderator's decision.  If you would like to cancel
this posting, please visit the following URL:

http://x.ch/mailman/confirm/infoline_mus.ch/d1c110e1babc8c9b34cd40a17c0ab8e0770e8617

I (as the owner of the mailing list receive the notification (message
#2) stating:

As list administrator, your authorization is requested for the
following mailing list posting:

    List:    infol...@x.ch
    From:    macchrist...@x.ch
    Subject: Test non-member
Reason:  Post by non-member to a members-only list

At your convenience, visit:

    http://mus.ch/mailman/admindb/infoline_mus.ch

to approve or deny the request.

One attachment to the notification is a message (message #3) with the
subject
"confirm d1c110e1babc8c9b34cd40a17c0ab8e0770e8617"
which tells me:

If you reply to this message, keeping the Subject: header intact,
Mailman will discard the held message.  Do this if the message is
spam.  If you reply to this message and include an Approved: header
with the list password in it, the message will be approved for posting
to the list.  The Approved: header can also appear in the first line
of the body of the reply.

Okay, I reply to the message. In earlier times, I got a response that
the message was sent into the Nirvana - or that the user had deleted it
himself using the link he received in message #1

However something seems to be broken now.

- The held message is no longer deleted when I reply to the "confirmation".
- I no longer receive a notification that the message was no longer on hold.
- The message remains in hold, even after the "confirmation" was replied to.

Yes, I can manually "reject" or "discard" the message.

My provider says he has no knowledge about how Mailman on cPanel works,
and I should ask in Mailman-related forums / lists...

Any idea how it can be fixed?

Thank you, Christian

[Mailman-Users] Usubscribe not recognized (was: Messages from non-members)

2021-11-16 Thread Christian Buser via Mailman-Users
Hi Adi

There are several possibilities for this:

1) You use a mail forwarding from address A to address B and try to
unsubscribe for address B instead of address A

2) Your mail server has several domains which are in fact the same -
like gmail.com / googlemail.com, or me.com/mac.com, etc.

3) Your are subscribed for myn...@mail.domain.com and want to
unsubscribe from myn...@domain.com

and possibly more. And:

if you reply to one of the messages in this list, the reply goes to the
author of the message (me, in your case) and not to the list - unless
you use the special command (e.g. in Thunderbird) "Reply to List...".  I
think this message also only went to me, not to the list...

You may want to analyze the mail headers of a list message to find out
what happened. Look for these header lines:
X-Apparently-To:
Received:  (look whether the desination address changed there between
one header and the next) - received lines are read from bottom to top
for chroniological order.

2022-05-17 Thread Christian Buser via Mailman-Users
Ah so…

You found another way to fix the main problem - but you do not tell us?

You know that in a mailing list everyone should help if he can and not only
consume?

So then, please unsubscribe here.

Thank you

[Mailman-Users] Text encoding of digests

2024-02-21 Thread Christian Buser via Mailman-Users
Hi all

I have a list with Mailman 2.1.39 running on cPanel (so, no direct
access to the server settings).

When the daily digest is sent, it comes with these headers:

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

even if messages are sent with charactest "outside" the 7bit us-ascii
table. Therefore, all these characters are replaced by a question mark
(?), making the text difficult to read.

Contrary to the digests, individual messages come perfectly with
encoding "utf-8":

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

I did not find the possibility to change the header in the "digest
options" of the mailing list.

Thank you for your ideas
Christian

[Mailman-Users] Error messages from Mailman without "real content".

2024-07-14 Thread Christian Buser via Mailman-Users
Hi all

We are running some lists using Mailman (obviously version 2.1.39) on cPanel
(110.0.36).

For some days now, I have received 2 or 3 error messages which are not telling
me anything, see the "Errormessage.jpg" attached. Sorry, my error message is in
German, but I’ll quickly try to translate:

"A message to the list was notdistributed and needs approval by you as an
administrator".
But I see nothing in the error message about the reason why it is held.

I see the originally sent message to the list as an attachment, and I also see
the "confirm" message, which I could use to discard the message.

Using confirm message works, but if I try to discard the message from cPanel’s
mailing list interface (open moderator’s actions, or how it could be called in
English), I get an error - see "HitaBug.jpg" attached.

Our provider says he has no idea how to correct this behaviour (which is new
for me, it worked until probably a weeg ago).

Thank you for any ideas.

Hi Odhiambo

No - this intallation is several years old. However, the errors occured
only one or two weeks ago. fAnd we did not change anything in the lists
settings.

Our provider told us that he did an update of cPanel earlier, but such
an action should not break anything on the server (at least I, as a
non-professional, think so).

[Mailman-Users] Digests are not sent

2024-08-31 Thread Christian Buser via Mailman-Users

Hi all

Mailing list running in Mailman 2.1.39 / cPanel.

The digest option seems not to work. Users are complaining that they
don’t receive the daily digests, and trying to send a digest manually
with "send_digest_now" results in the following error message:

Bug in Mailman version 2.1.39

We're sorry, we hit a bug!

Please inform the webmaster for this site of this problem. Printing of
traceback and other system information has been explicitly inhibited,
but the webmaster can find this information in the Mailman error logs or
the web server logs.

Any idea what we could do here?

Thank you, Christian

Hi Mark

Thank you for the analysis. I was about to send you the log just when I saw
your response.

I’ll let the provider know about your answer, but I have an additional question
here.

The list’s language on that cPanel page is set to German (preferred_language),
available_languages are set to German, French and English. Should that not also
cover non-ascii charcters in the „From:“-header?

Thank you, Christian

[Mailman-Users] Text encoding problems

2025-03-27 Thread Christian Buser via Mailman-Users

Hi all

Mailman 2.2.0 on cPanel

In the last few days, several messages (not all!) showed problems with
their text encodings.

This means, messages containing non-standard characters, like ä, ö, ü,
etc. do not arrive properly at the subscriber’s side. Instead of "ä",
they show "=C3=A4", for example. And at the line end, a single "=".  The
headers usually contain

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

which should be correct.

When I look at the "raw source" of such messages, I see a block of
base64-encoded text. I can copy this text block and insert it in a
base64-"decoder", such as , I see the
same effect as in the mail program.

Yesterday, I answered to such a message. And my message arrived at the
subscriber’s end as base64-encoded text, it was not decoded by the
recipients’ mail program, although its header contained the same
indications as above (utf-8, base64).

I checked with several mail programs; all of them just showed the
base64-encoded block in the mail body.

Does anybody have a solution? Did cPanel change something on its
Mailman-part? Did cPanel "update" Mailman in the last few days (our
provider says that such updates are automatic and he doesn’t know if
there was one)?

Most of the subscribers use Mail from Apple in various versions, but
there are also some with Thunderbird, Postbox, GyazMail, Outlook (Mac),
etc.

Please ask if you need more info - I’ll try to answer them.

Thank you
Christian
