[Mailman-Users] Mailman's Functional Spec for users

2023-02-02 Thread Anthony
I'm new to Mailman and looking for how it treats address headers. Mailman CC'd
a sender's subscribed address and I want to know if publishing this address is
the intended behaviour, rather than BCC.

My problem is with the docs at wiki.list.org/DOC/Home. I haven't found a
description of what a list manager does in terms of what behaviour to expect in
use, rather than during configuration by users, manager or site admin.

The concept of a list manager is explained at www.list.org/mailman-member.txt,
but not the basic operation. Page 'Introduction - What is GNU Mailman?' belies
its heading and is focussed on 'How do I...' (e.g. 'How do I spell Mailman?').
I found only Reply-to headers mentioned in the List Administration Manual.

There's a lot to search and I don't know my way around as a developer. Where
should I be looking?

Kudos on the comment to code ratio! All is clarified at lines 204 and 272,

Send as plain text instead of MIME. Their e-mail client sounds as though it

[Mailman-Users] Fwd: Mailman web interfaces and design

2003-04-03 Thread CARTER Anthony

Hi,

I am looking for a means of customizing the mailman we pages. I have noticed
that some pages can be edited via the interface, but I would like to make
more drastic changes (removing links to admin page for example).

My first thing that I would like to do is, if possible, to add our own CSSs
to the web pages. Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so, where do
 I start?

Thanks,
Anthony Carter

Re: [Mailman-Users] No access to public archives

2003-06-06 Thread CARTER Anthony
You can't just create the links, you must administer the list through the web
administration and set the archives to private or public from there.

Remember though that if set to private, they are no longer accessible by the
alias /pipermail/

[Mailman-Users] Archives and attachments

2003-07-16 Thread CARTER Anthony
Hi,

I read that mailman 2.1.1 has limited handling of attachments for the
archives. Am I wrong? If not, can someone inform how to configure this
or point me to documentation concerning this. I looked through the docs,
but can't see anything.

Basically would like attachments stripped from the file, stored in
another directory under the archives and a link from the original post
to that file. I hear it is possible...HOW?

Thanks,

[Mailman-Users] Problem with e-mail munging

2003-07-17 Thread CARTER Anthony
Hi,

I have a mailing list that seems to be munging the email addresses and
linking them back to the listinfo page. For example:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

becomes

a.carter at cordis.lu

but if you hover over the link, the actual link becomes:

http://www.server.com/mailman/listinfo/name_of_list

Now I noticed in the online administrator interface the option:

Show member addresses so they're not directly recognizable as email
addresses? Yes/No

This is set as NO!

Any clues or help would be hugely helpful.

Thanks,
Anthony Carter

Have you checked the permissions on /var/log/mailman/error? A permission
denied error can indicate that the user running mailman is different.

What were you doing when you jumped into this error page?

Re: [Mailman-Users] Migrating from Lyris to Mailman - Looking forfunctionality and/or workarounds

2003-07-18 Thread CARTER Anthony
For point 1, yes you lose this. However, I think it may be possible to
get some info by configuring webalizer to read the mailman log files. I
am not sure on this point though.

Point 2. You will find in the templates folder (en for english) a
footer.html that gets added. You may edit that as you wish. (just run
arch program to update the archives with it).

Point 3 I think that mailman does support virtual servers, but I have no
experience of this. So don't hold me to it even being available.

[Mailman-Users] mailman 2.1.1 -> 2.1.2

2003-07-21 Thread CARTER Anthony
Hi,

I have modified quite a bit of mailman, especially templates and added
CSS support within HTML pages. I was wondering if I upgraded from
mailman 2.1.1 to 2.1.2, what actually changes, and will my site get
messed up, even just a little. This is an live server running for a
large customer. I know I can (and should) test it on another server
first, but I wanted other peoples experiences first.

Thanks,
Anthony Carter

Is there a way that I can make peoples email addresses in the archive

[Mailman-Users] Attachments not at end + archive

2003-07-31 Thread CARTER Anthony
Ok,

Archives are working and attachments are being stripped and all. Perfect.
However, when there is a thread, the text is all first, and the attachments
for all messages are placed at the bottom of the entire thread.

Is there a way to embed the attachments in the message that sent it. For
example, current:

Message 1
-
Message 2
-
Message n
-
Attachment

I would like:

Message 1
-
Message 2
Attachment
--
Message n
--

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Anthony

Yes, using MIME digests...However, will the attachments still be available.
Some come as non-text, and I need to have the attachments available.

Thanks,

You're using MIME format digests, right? Have you tried turning
that off?

Sorry, in my past experiences with Mailman, I seem to recall it working
right out of the box, so I didn't bother reading INSTALL.

When all else fails, RTFM! ;-)

[Mailman-Users] un-subscription problems

2002-09-20 Thread Anthony Carmody

Hi,

I have a problem with users being able to unsubscribe from a closed mailing list I
run. [closed: admin can post, users
can't etc]

basically whenever users try to send mail to the list to 'unsubscribe' their mails are
intercepted by the admin filter
and consequently do not get removed from the list.

How can I set mailman so that users can unsubscribe with out being able to post
messages to the list?

[Mailman-Users] Re: un-subscription problems

2002-09-22 Thread Anthony Carmody

~gulp~ I am not a python programmer. and the users of the list needing the unsubscribe
address are artists [do i need to
say more?] ..and although I am not 'completely' new to Mailman, I have only had it on
my system for a few months AND in
a moderately vanilla state. I lease a Virtual Server without smrsh that I can see, and
I only have a pseudos-root
permission. I have virtual domains making it a little trickier. I have searched the
archives and have not been able to
find anything that works for me as of yet.

I suppose what I need to know is: Is there a script [adding addresses to a temp file,
hourly cron is fine] that someone
'has working' that they can post me that does not need smrsh and has the alias entries
examples. preferably something
that I can pass the variables to like so:

-unsub:"|/usr/lib/mailman/localbin/unsubscribe.sh
- -"

2002-09-23 Thread Anthony Carmody

Yup yep yes,

I have worked this much out. Now my problem is getting sendmail to execute the script.
I have had sensible comments like "Whatever you had to do to make the mailman wrapper
work is probably the same thing
here" However, this instance of Mailman is installed automatically by my service
network provider .

asking I/NSP tech support questions is sometimes like dealing with an evil robot

  Hi! My new hosting service,

list, with the only recipient options being to subscribe or unsubscribe: no
discussion features, etc. Is mailman configurable to do this or
  should I look elsewhere?

[Mailman-Users] moderators replies

2001-10-22 Thread Anthony Worrall

Is it possible to customise the moderators replies on a per list basis.

I would like to change the "Your message to awaits moderator approval"
and the Request to mailing list rejected replies.

The list is a front end to a database where the moderators add the information
to the database and then tell the users that there information has been added
and key to the information.

[Mailman-Users] Quick text format question

2001-10-10 Thread Anthony Mendoza

I've searched everywhere and through some of the archives, but didn't
find an answer to this:

How do I format an auto-response?

I would like to include the following at the end of the auto response:

Thank you,
Embrace Networks, Inc.
Sunnyvale, CA 94086
408-585-5600
www.embracenetworks.com

But if I use this format or import a file where the message body +
signature is formatted properly it comes out like this:

Thank you,

Embrace Networks, Inc.

Sunnyvale, CA 94086

408-585-5600

www.embracenetworks.com

or

Thank you, Embrace Networks, Inc. Sunnyvale, CA 94086 408-585-5600
www.embracenetworks.com

Is there a special tag that works like a carriage return?

RE: [Mailman-Users] (no subject)

2004-01-23 Thread CARTER Anthony
1 For number one, you can set up an automatic mailto on the submit button
using a mailto: or with java to do it without interaction from user.
Remember that the mailman allows you to administer via mail.

2 Again, as for 1, you can do this using a mail command.

3 Bounced messages or invalid addresses can be set up so that they don't get
into your list in the first place, or you can make users login to your
mailing list.

The rest was answered by Brad.

Newsletter box? How is that different from the mailing list?

No problem.

No problem.

Only if you want to configure a specific limit, or you're routing
your mail through a provider which places a specific limit on their
servers.

There are plenty of Mailman list servers out there that have many
more subscribers, and handle much larger messages on a daily basis.

So far as the criteria you've specified, I think Mailman can
handle everything you need and more. However, you'll need to try out
the software to see if there are any things you need which you did
not mention, and which Mailman y be unable to help you with.

RE: [Mailman-Users] Attachment problems

2004-03-29 Thread CARTER Anthony
Hi,

Take a look in the management console in the content filtering options.
Check out the pass types. You could add some attachment types (mine are as
below) to allow excel files through. Don't know exactly what you would need
to put, but any good html documentation would be able to tell you what the
attachment type is for an excel spreadsheet.

multipart/mixed
multipart/alternative
text/plain

This is an idea, dunno if it will work. Please note that the pass types that
are NOT listed are scrubbed.

Subject: [Mailman-Users] Attachment problems

Hi,
Mailman is the default mailing list application offered by my web hosting
company through its web-based control panel interface.

I created a mailing list but we have been experiencing problems with
attachments.
Whenever an email message with an attachment is sent to the mailing list,
the email message gets through to all recipients but the attachment (whether
a Word document, image, PDF or Excel file etc) will always be scrubbed and
shows up as a unopenable .dat file. The attachment is also scrubbed at the
list archives so there's no way list members can view the attachment.

Does anyone have any advice how to get around this problem, so that
attachments
can pass through successfully in the original message to all recipients?

I have the content filtering option set to "No", and have not placed any
limits on message size.

Thanks
Iris Chan

HI,

I'm running Version 2.1.4 on a solaris server. My MTA is postfix.

I've tried all solutions in faqs, archives, etc. - nothing seems to work.
basically my email won't go out. the last bit of success i had with it was
when i stopped and started:

/usr/local/bin/virtual ~/usr/local/mailman/bin/mailmanctl stop
/usr/local/bin/virtual ~/usr/local/mailman/bin/mailmanctl -s start

and i was told it removed a stale pid. after that, i got all of the email
that was stored in qfiles/in but nothing else seems to make it through.
qrunner appears to be running fine. i deleted lock files and qrunner created
2 new ones when i sent a new email. smtp for last email sent:

Mar 29 17:19:54 2004 (383)
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> smtp for 1 recips,
completed in 1.349 seconds

what else is there? this has worked before then one day just stopped. any
help much much appreciated!!

thanks,

That sounds like you've selected Mime digests, either as the list default
or for your own personal options.

To check the list setting, go to Digest Options and look at:

When receiving digests, which format is default? Plain MIME

Plain is plain text, each message one after the other in a single email.
Mime includes each message as an attachment so you can read and/or save
each message individually, rather than an entire digest.

[Mailman-Users] (no subject)

2004-05-07 Thread Anthony Diak
Hello all. I am having some problems with a mailman list I am trying to
setup.

First let me tell you my configuration:

Xserve G4 10.3 Server

Mailman 2.1.2 (os x package-part of the server)

Everything is up to date - all patches and updates

What the people who want the list setup want is to have every post be
moderated, no matter what. I figured out how to do this simply enough.
They also want the moderator to receive emails whenever a post is submitted
so that they can approve it asap. I set a password different from the admin
password for the moderator, and supplied a moderator in the moderator field.
I turned on "Should the list moderators get immediate notice of new
requests, as well as daily notices about collected ones" to Yes, and to my
understanding, the moderator should get messages whenever I send a message
to the list. The posts are being send to the moderation que and await
moderation, but the moderator never gets an email saying there are requests
waiting. Is there something I'm missing, a bug in this version, or
something else?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Anthony.

[Mailman-Users] Duplicate confirmation requests

2004-06-11 Thread Anthony Bouvier
I just upgraded from 2.0.* to 2.1.* and everything was
going great until I started testing subscribes and
unsubscribes to -request@

Whenever a subscribe request is sent (or unsubscribe
request is sent) two confirmation emails are sent,
each with different confirmation hashes.

Checking my mail log to make sure I really was only
generating one request to the program, it indeed does
appear to be that. 1 email FROM me, 2 immediately
back FROM one of the alases (in the case of
unsubscribing which is currently the lines in front of
me in the log, 2 messages from -bounce@).

Any idea what could be doing this?

I've searched the archives and seen reference to
duplication of messages to the list, but I'm not
having that problem -- messages to the list are not duplicated.

[Mailman-Users] List Migration Issue

2012-01-07 Thread Anthony Harrison
I am trying to migrate mailing lists from Mailman 2.1.11 running on Ubuntu
8.04.3 LTS to Mailman 2.1.12 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.2
(Santiago). I'm not sure how mailman was installed/built on the Ubuntu box
but on the Redhat box, it was installed using yum.

I have followed the guides on list migration and rsync'ed the lists, data,
and archives directory from the Ubuntu box to the Redhat box, updated the
permissions, and regenerated the aliases. However, when I go to update the
urls for mailing lists via fix_url, none of the allegedly migrated lists
can be found.

Has anyone encountered and dealt with this issue successfully?

[Mailman-Users] Version Error with Migrated Lists?

2012-01-18 Thread Anthony Harrison
I'm attempting to migrate a number of lists from Mailman 2.1.11 on a box
running Ubuntu 8.04.3 to Mailman 2.1.14 running on a box with Red Hat
Enterprise Linux Server release 6.2. I've installed Mailman on the Red Hat
box according to the installation guide and have successfully created a
working mailing list under it. I've added a few people to it and confirmed
that it can send and receive messages.

With a working version of mailman on Red Hat, I copied over the lists,
data, and archive directory as per the migration guides. I updated the file
permissions via check_perms -f and then ran genaliases.

Whenever I attempt to run fix_url on any of the lists, however, I receive
the following error:

This seems to be related to an incorrect version number, but I have no idea
how to remedy this. Have I missed some crucial step in the migration?

It would also fall foul of the UK government interpretation of the EU
Privacy and Communications Directive, and probably of other EU nations
legislation interpreting the directive. The main target of the directive
is cookies, but other means are also covered.

Re: [Mailman-Users] New To Mailman

2014-08-09 Thread Anthony (N2KI)
Mark,

I have been using IS Mail, which is an email server program on a Win 7 64
bit machine for a number of years. What this is used for is to send Alert
Activation's (very short messages) to a group of volunteers that assist the
county during emergencies (ie, flooding, severe weather, tornadic activity,
power outages, etc). It basically will mobilize the troops. As of late,
many of the messages that have been sent range from getting marked by gmail
as spam to completely bounced by Verizon (using the phone number @ vtext.com
syntax). My thought was to find a different/alternate email server
program that I can do the same thing with. Since many of the reflectors I
subscribe to use Mailman, I though I would give it a go. The requirement
was to use a Linux based system in order to do this. I know ZERO about
Linux.

What I have done so far is to install Virtual Box on the Win 7 64 machine
and also install Ubuntu within VirtualBox. I used Ubuntu to download
Mailman and then extract it to a separate file folder. That's where I am
at. Because of my lack of Linux, I am stuck as to how to start Mailman or
even set it up. My intent here is to create three lists as I have now with
IS Mail so that the Emergency Coordinator can send a message to the
reflector and it will notify the subscribed email addresses for the
volunteers subsequently activating the group.

Regards,

Anthony (N2KI)

Carl

That is what I am currently doing with IS Mail. In order for the messages
to be sent, IS Mail logs into my account and then sends the mail. I
believe the problem could be related but not limited to reverse DNS
authentication. My Ip resolves to my domain name via DYNDNS. I also have
an MX record as well as a TXT record that is set to allow my domain to send
email through my ISP account.

To finish creating your mailing list, you must edit your /etc/aliases (or

`newaliases' program:

[Mailman-Users] How to send "mailman-owner" emails to more than one site admin

2010-08-11 Thread Anthony Whyte
We are running Mailman 2.1.9 and I've included below a sample alias entries
email that is sent to the mailman-owner whenever we create a new list. The
question I have is how does one configure Mailman to post such alerts as that
below to more than a single site administrator?

Cheers,

[Mailman-Users] Moving Mailman to a new IP

2004-09-08 Thread Anthony Chavez
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi, all!

I'm currently faced with a somewhat complicated task.

Machine A (hostname x.com) is running Postfix 2.1.4 with myhostname =
mail.x.com, acting not only as the MX for x.com *and* y.com but also (as
you would expect) hosting virtual mailbox maps and domains for the
latter. I have also been running a Mailman mailing list on y.com for
about a year or so. I was recently donated machine B and have installed
Postfix and Mailman on it and wish to migrate the list to this new
server.

My goal is to configure Postfix on machine B (hostname to be y.com) to
receive mail as virtual host mail.y.com and eliminate the virtual
mailboxen altogether. The hard way of doing this would be to try to
synchronize with each post to the mailing lists while DNS changes
propagate.

I'm thinking that it would be easier (and cleaner!) to copy the list
over to Mailman B, configure Postfix A to relay messages for y.com to
Postfix B, and shut down Mailman A.

My questions to you are as follows: 1) is this the best approach and 2)
if so, how is the right way to accomplish this? My reasoning for asking
the second question is because I cannot afford any downtime for this
move and I need to make sure that it gets done right the first time.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

[Mailman-Users] Problems with relocating a list

2004-09-21 Thread Anthony Chavez
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Moving a Mailman list from one server to a new one has been a *very*
smooth process for the most part, but I'm noticing some small quirks in
the wake.

Here's an account of how I accomplished this.

1. Installed Mailman 2.1.5, Postfix 2.1.4, and Apache 2.0.50 on the new
server. These versions exactly match the ones on the old server.

2. Went through the process dictated in FreeBSD-post-install-notes,
INSTALL, README, and README.POSTFIX, which essentially involved
editing main.cf, httpd.conf, adding MTA = 'Postfix' to mm_cfg.py and
   creating the "mailman" list.

3. Under the direction of section 3.4 in the FAQ Wizard, I copied the
data, archives and lists directories from the old server to the new
one. But rather than clobbering the pre-existing directories, I
copied only the *relevant* directories from archives and lists
   (i.e. archives/private/listname* and lists/listname). Nothing was
copied from data and the "mailman" list was not copied.

4. Ran withlist -l -r fix_url listname && genaliases

5. Started postfix and qrunner.

6. Configured Apache on the old site to proxy and Postfix to relay to
the new server while DNS changes propagated.

Now, the aforementioned quirks:

1. The old lists are not advertised on the new Web site.

2. Apache will not let me access the public archives (that were private
before the move) and I get a 403. I'm sure this has to do with
Apache 2's default deny policy, but not entirely sure how to deal
with it (I'm still somewhat of an Apache 2 newbie, but I've had a few
   years experience with 1.x).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Thank you for your response.

I've determined that in this case, it's a simple matter of
misconfiguration. Attempts to view list advertisements at
http://www.mydomain.com/mailman/listinfo yields no results. However,
connecting to http://mydomain.com/mailman/listinfo works fine.

However, Apache 2 still 403s when attempting to access
/pipermail/gubug/, using either hostname

My question at this point is this: what Mailman directories should
Apache allow access to? Section 4 of the INSTALL document says to allow
access from all for /usr/local/mailman/cgi-bin, but in order to access
my public archives I also must enable it for
/usr/local/mailman/archives/public.

Never did get a response to this. Can anyone point me in the right
direction?

Naturally, I'd like to only allow access to those parts of Mailman that
are *absolutely* necessary to be accessed by subscribers. I'm
interested to know if anyone has already distilled these paths before I
start experimenting.

Thanks!

[Mailman-Users] PGP, mmreencrypt and DEFAULT_FILTER_PROGRAM

2004-12-07 Thread Anthony Grieco
Hi,

I have been searching for a MLM that is PGP enabled (ie send mails
using list pub key, and re-encrypt out to members via their public
keys). Mailman seemed to have what I wanted with mmreencrypt. I now
have mailman up and working with Qmail and went to do the mmreencrypt
integration and found that the requirement of DEFAULT_FILTER_PROGRAM
seems to be now gone (and been replaced by the built in mime
filters?).

Is mmreencrypt still the way to go- or are there others addons? (or
other MLMs that might handle this better/natively)?

Has anyone gotten mmreencrypt working with a recent version of Mailman?

thanks

That is correct.

Both of our settings have "nodupes." We've tried having him CC: himself
and he receives that copy, so the problem isn't his MTA.

Analyzing one particular post attempted by this subscriber, the Mailman
post log shows a successful post and the smtp log shows 58 recips.
Here's my subscriber count:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:.../mailman> sudo bin/list_members -r list | wc -l
  58
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:.../mailman> sudo bin/list_members -r -n list | wc -l
   0

Not sure how to get at the number of "avoided duplicates," though.
Could you elaborate?

Nevertheless, tracing through the Postfix log for that particular post
also yields 58 recipients. This strikes me as very odd since the sender
is a non-digest subscriber.

Thanks for your assistance. Any further thoughts as to what could be
causing this?

Here's where this gets interesting. ;-)

I myself subscribe to this list, have the nodupes bit set, and see
"Receive your own posts to the list? Yes" in my configuration page. I
receive copies of my own posts. Would that be because I'm the owner?

The other subscriber *also* has the nodupes bit, also sees "Receive your
own posts to the list? Yes" in his configuration page. He *doesn't*
receive copies of his own posts, yet everyone else does.

Understood, thanks.

Actually, I re-analyzed the logs just now and it turns out that there
had been an unsubscription between the time that this message was
relayed and the time that I ran list_members. Therefore, the recipient
count should be considered to be 57, which accounts for the fact that
his post wasn't sent back to him.

Possibly, but I can't help but thinking that the problem lies in
Mailman-space, since Postfix would at least record an attempt, yes?

No bounce recorded.

Highly doubtful, since the message is not getting past my MTA. ;-)

Actually, after some fiddling, I see that the bit that affects delivery
back to the poster is the "not metoo" bit. You can confirm this by
using the administrative Web interface (Membership Management) and
toggling the "Receive your own posts to the list?" bit in your personal
configuration page.

I am inclined to agree with you (except that as stated above, I think
that the bit in question is "not metoo").

This particular use is posting with a blank space after Cc:.

I'm running 2.1.5, BTW. FWIW, htdig 3.2.0b6 is installed but not
configured nor running. Same goes for AMaViS 2.2.0, ClamAV 0.75, and
SpamAssassin 2.64, none of which are being piped any messages, AFAICT.
All on FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE-p2.

Friends:

I have a list subscriber who is not receiving his own posts.

His configuration matches my own (and that of most other subscribers)
one-to-one and I for one am receiving copies of my own posts. We have
subscribed and re-subscribed him multiple times, to no avail.

Checking my MTA (Postfix) logs, I see that no delivery is even being
attempted for his own posts, but he does in fact receive posts from
*other* senders.

I would very much appreciate any advice on this issue.

Thanks.

The above statement seems to contradict the following one (from earlier
in this thread).

This latter statement seems to be the accurate one, but I'm at a loss as
to why I should be receiving my own posts when I have the nodupes bit
set. The only logical deduction that I can come up with is that it is
because I am the list owner.

Apart from the usual headers, there are 3 differences:

1. He has a few X- headers, such as X-US-Mail, X-Telephone, X-FAX and
X-URL. I have only X-PGP-Key. In any case, these shouldn't affect.

2. I have User-Agent, Mime-Version, Content-Type, and
   Content-Transfer-Encoding. Again, these shouldn't matter.

3. He includes a Cc: header with no value in every post. This seems
like it *could* be interfering, but why would it?

> Another possibility might be topics, but I'm guessing your list doesn't

No, topics have not been configured, but if they were standing in the
way, the message would be killed before being to delivered to *anyone,*
wouldn't it?

I see no differences outright.

Thanks again.

Here I think that we've sufficiently distilled this matter. I've
forwarded your post to the affected user and suggested that he clear his
nodupes bit (he does, in fact, make a habit of CC:'ing himself), which
I'm quite certain should fix the problem.

Thanks for clarifying this for us.

[Mailman-Users] Unshuntable files & Spammed Pending List

2005-02-01 Thread Tom Anthony
Hi all,
I noticed recently that the qrunner process on my server was going
really nuts sometimes, and using over 90% of the CPU (causing various
problems). I'm aware of a couple of reasons for this, and understand
that 2.1.5 addresses some such issues.

I am currently running 2.1.2, and want to upgrade to 2.1.5; but I
thought it would be a sensible idea to spring clean a little first,
especially once I found out how much junk I have laying around. I have
42 lists, some are large, some small, some busy some basically dead.

My qfiles/shunt/ directory has over 3800 files, and the bin/unshunt
command doesn't seem to work. It runs for a while then leaves the files
there. I understand the qfile format has changed in 2.1.5, so I wanted
to clear these out. Can I just delete them all? (I'm not worried about
their being being lost or whatnot). Otherwise, why wouldn't unshunt
work? The permissions are all correct (now - I just fixed that).

Additionally, a couple of my lists got spammed, and now have a lot of
pending requests (over 17,000 on one and 3,000 on another). I looked up
how to remove these, but my install lacks a bin/discard utility; I
presume it came in a later install. Is there anyway for me to clear
these up before I upgrade?

Additionally, is there any other steps users would recommend to prevent
such CPU heavy qrunner processes? I heard that archiving more often can
help, is that correct? Any other ideas?

Many thanks.

Hi Pablo,
I believe those tags are created when you use MS Word to generate
content. Take a look here:

You may want to reconsider using Word to generate your email content,
if that is indeed what you are doing. :)

Hope that helps. :)

[Mailman-Users] Mailman Archives page not updating

2008-02-25 Thread Anthony Human
Hello

I'm relatively new to mailman. I've searched the mailman lists and tried to
find a solution to my issue
but nothing.
Has anyone encountered the below issue and could offer some help.

I recently moved mailman from one server to another.I tarred up the old
archives and moved
them to the new server, and simply untarred them into:

/usr/local/mailman/archives/public/[list-name]

The system has been running for a few months now and I have noticed that the
archives
list doesn't show anything past the month when I moved over to the new server.
When I log onto the server, I can see the messages in .txt files for the
following months after the move.
However, when I vi the index.html it looks the same as the site i.e. no months
following the server move.
Is there a command I can run to update the archives webpage? Ideally I would
like the archives webpage to update
automatically again.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Anthony

RE: [Mailman-Users] (no subject)

2004-07-16 Thread R. Anthony Mills
The way I've done it is to have the person send an email to:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Place subscribe in the subject line.

If the admin is doing the subscribing or unsubscribing, the "Mailman
list manager" help commands allow you to get information about and
control your subscription to Mailman lists at this site. A command can
be in the subject line or in the body of the message.

About the descriptions - words in "<>"s signify REQUIRED items and words
in "[]" denote OPTIONAL items. Do not include the "<>"s or "[]"s when
you use the commands.

subscribe [password] [digest|nodigest] [address=]
Subscribe to this mailing list. Your password must be given to
unsubscribe or change your options, but if you omit the
password, one
will be generated for you. You may be periodically reminded of
your
password.

The next argument may be either: `nodigest' or `digest' (no
quotes!).
If you wish to subscribe an address other than the address you
sent
this request from, you may specify `address=' (no
brackets
around the email address, and no quotes!)

unsubscribe [password] [address=]
Unsubscribe from the mailing list. If given, your password must
match
your current password. If omitted, a confirmation email will be
sent
to the unsubscribing address. If you wish to unsubscribe an
address
other than the address you sent this request from, you may
specify
`address=' (no brackets around the email address, and
no
quotes!)

I am not exactly sure how this faq applies, I should have been clearer
in my request I can email the list easily enough, what I am looking
for is a way to modify subscriptions to the list (either add or remove
users) from an email only interface. For example, listproc has a
command you can email it to allow a user to be subscribed, and another
command to unsubscribe users as the list admin, not just as the user who
wants on/off. I believe majordomo has one as well (I haven't ever used
it, but since it is email/commandline only it probably should). I would
like to be able to make many subscription changes via the email
interface as the list admin.

I was not clear enough in my previous email, I should have thought
through it more before sending it. I hope this is clearer. pat

There is an existing Mailman list with an archive which needs to be moved

a 2002 archive, and all of the posts in there seem to have been posted in

Thanks for your reply Mark.

I took a look in the .mbox file and unfortunately the dates in the From and
Date headers are 2000, so it seems a manual fix is in order. There's 230
messages so I'll put that on hold for now.

[Mailman-Users] Replies from non-members getting posted to list set to allow posts by subscribers only

2010-06-21 Thread Anthony R. Thompson
I have a list which is set to reject posts from non-members (see
settings below).

At one point I had an address (chira...@gmail.com) which was subscribed
to the list (adf-www).

However, I unsubscribed it from the list sometime yesterday. The
list_members command confirmed that it is not subscribed to the list:

a...@lists:~$ list_members adf-www
adfro...@illious.com
ashipkows...@gmail.com
athenam...@gmail.com
athom...@adf.org
cefarr...@gmail.com
cryst...@cedarlight.org
druidki...@mac.com
knottydrag...@hotmail.com
m...@chronarchy.com
nightdr...@lycos.com
p...@castingtherunes.com
sele...@zoomtown.com
sk...@dragonskeep.us
walks_alo...@hotmail.com
smgoo...@hotmail.com

I went into the inbox of that account, chira...@gmail.com, which is not
a subscriber, and *replied* to one of the posts it had received when it
*was* on the list.

I expected to get a rejection notice back since chira...@gmail.com isn't
a subscriber but... the post went through.

I got it at the athom...@adf.org address, I looked at the headers and it
was sent From chira...@gmail.com with adf-www in the To and Reply-To
fields, with adf-www-bounces in the sender field. Further, I confirmed
it by checking the mbox file for the list.

Amazed, I used list_members to confirm that chira...@gmail.com was not a
subscriber, then replied to a different message (received when it /had/
been on the list), and that message went through too!

At this point I was paranoid that the list would allow anyone in the
world to post, but when I tried posting from a different address (which
had never been on the list at all), I got back the expected rejection
notice.

I then posted from my athom...@adf.org address, which /is/ a subscriber
on the list, to see whether chira...@gmail.com would get the post, and I
got the post back, it was added to the mbox file, but chira...@gmail.com
did /not/ get the post.

So what I'm left with is a non-subscriber, which used to be a
subscriber, apparently able to post to a list I'm pretty sure is
configured to only allow posts from subscribers.

Does anyone have any experience or insight into this? I searched the
archives but couldn't find anything similar.

thanks,
Anthony

(I put x at the end of the user portion of various email addresses in
this post just to spam protect them as I don't know how the archives for
this list are configured)

At one point I had an address (chira...@gmail.com) which was subscribed
to the list (adf-www).

Do you mean (as implied by your access to the inbox) that this is your
personal address?

Yeah, one of several :)

If so, I don't know if GMail allows this, but is it possible that you
configured that account to automatically have an Approved header?

No, but...

This reminded me that I had set the Reply-To for chira...@gmail.com to
atho...@adf.org (this account).

So I just removed the Reply-To in the Gmail settings, and tried posting
again, and got the expected rejection notice - yay.

However, this raised another question - why did the Reply-To setting
affect the behavior of Mailman?

So, I tried posting to this list (adf-www) from a completely unrelated
account, a...@sigilservices.com. As expected, I got the post sent back
to me with the nonmember_rejection_notice text.

BUT, when I sent a post from a...@sigilservices.com with a Reply-To of
atho...@adf.org (which *is* subscribed to the adf-www) list, instead of
getting a rejection notice back to a...@sigilservices.com, instead "Your
message to ADF-WWW awaits moderator approval" was sent to atho...@adf.org!

This is very weird behavior - it's weird that Mailman would behave
differently when the From has not changed, but the Reply-To header has,
especially since it's so easy to set that to anything one wants.

I guess my initial issue is resolved, since I had forgotten about
setting the Reply-To in GMail - and I do apologize for that.

But it's still odd that Mailman would act differently based on the value
in the Reply-To field, unless I'm not understanding something correctly.

Thanks Stephen, and Mark too, for your help.

(And while I'm at it, how do I request a feature for a future release?
I was glad that there is a nonmember_rejection_notice field, but would
have really liked to see a nonmember_hold_notice field too!)

thanks,
Anthony

Re: [Mailman-Users] Replies from non-members getting posted to list set to allow posts by subscribers only

2010-06-22 Thread Anthony R. Thompson
Actually, another test post I sent to a list with a similar
configuration just got *posted*, based solely on the Reply-To header
(list configuration appended below).

When I posted from a...@sigilservices.com to this other list, which is
not subscribed to the list, it got properly rejected (with the
nonmember_rejection_notice text).

HOWEVER, when I changed the Reply-To (in the Thunderbird account
settings) to atho...@adf.org, which /is/ subscribed to the list, it got
*posted* to the list.

Is there something I'm missing here - is this normal behavior?

It doesn't seem to me like someone should be able to post a message to a
private list just by changing the Reply-To field to an address they know
is on the private list.

Anthony

How can I set up a second private (protected with .htaccess) page which
shows all of the lists?

Mike, if it was me I'd do the following:

* Set up the directory you want the page to be in, with the .htaccess
protection you want

* Set up an index.html page there that uses Apache's server side include
mechanism to include index.inc, with something like:

We have the following mailing lists:

* Then do the following, either manually or probably more likely on a
regular basis via cron:

rm -f /path/to/index.inc; ls -1 /var/lib/mailman/archives/private |
egrep -v mbox | perl -ne 'chomp; s#/$##; print qq^href="/mailman/listinfo/$_">$_\n^;' >> /path/to/index.inc

(with that ls -1 command being all on one line)

There are a lot of assumptions there, for example that your archive
directory is in /var/lib/mailman/archives, that no one will access the
page in the very small time between the rm and the ls/perl, etc.

You could make it fancier (such as writing to a temp file and then
moving over the original inc file), but for me the above would probably
be "good enough".

hope this helps,
Anthony

the places in an incoming message that are checked for a member
address to determine if a post is from a member are controlled by the
Defaults.py/mm_cfg.py setting SENDER_HEADERS. The default setting
checks the following in order:
- the From: header,
- the envelope sender,
- the Reply-To: header and
- the Sender: header.

Mark, you are correct, I apologize for not understanding what you had
written in the first place. I read Stephen's reply, read yours, then
re-read Stephen's and only on that second re-reading did I realize that
I had set the Reply-To on that account.

If you have write access to mm_cfg.py, you can set SENDER_HEADERS to a
list which doesn't include Reply-To (see the documentation in
Defaults.py)

I do have write access, but will have to do some thinking about whether
I want to deviate from the standard configuration.

I've often found that things are set "that way" for a reason, and I
usually don't "know better" than the folks who determined the default
installation settings :)

If someone were ever to use the Reply-To header to actually send
something to a private list of ours, I'd probably revisit the decision,
but for right now I think I'll leave it.

but as Stephen said, it is almost as easy to spoof the
From: or even the envelope sender as it is to set the Reply-To:.

Yes, you (and Stephen) are right. I've even done that myself,
telnetting to the local SMTP server etc.

That's become a little more difficult recently, with many open relays
being gone, so I guess I felt it was harder for many people to casually
spoof the From address than the Reply-To. But you're right, either is
hackable.

thanks again,

I need something for our discussion lists. (We also have announce-only
lists.)

The discussion lists ideally would have an archive that is accessible.

Also, some of our lists need to have the ability to have multiple
"moderators / posters" who may or may not be list subscribers. For
instance, we have staff in Jerusalem & Chicago. We have mailing lists
for each office, but all staff members can post to either list. For
example: A Jerusalem staff member can send a message that only the
Chicago staff will receive.

Alison, I can say that Mailman can do what you describe (I'm sure others
can too :)

I just converted 71 lists (a few announcement lists and the rest
discussion) from Listserv to Mailman and so far everything went smoothly.

(If you're doing a similar conversion you can see some documentation I
wrote on this at http://blog.anthonyrthompson.com/listserv-to-mailman/)

Our biggest announcement list has about 1500 people on it and a few of
our bigger discussion lists have between 500 and 1000 people on them.

Yes Mailman comes with archives built in. If you want to enable
searching you'll have to do that as an add on but there's documentation
out there on doing that (a lot of people, my org included, use swish).

I don't know if I can set up a demo for you, or if there are screen
shots, but if no one else knows of anything I might be able to do some
screenshots for you if you contact me offlist about what you'd want to see.

Depending on how lazy you want to be, I'm guessing you might be able to
just take the member list from List A and mass subscribe it to List B.

I think Mailman would just complain about the people who are already
subscribed to List B and then process the rest. Though I haven't tried
this.

I tried playing around with uniq (and two dummy files) and it might do
what you want but the results weren't intuitive to me.

I hacked together a script a few years ago to compare two files and say
which lines are just in file A, just in file B, or in both; it's at
http://blog.anthonyrthompson.com/listserv-to-mailman/code/utils/filecomplines

Following that, I'll run rmlist on List A without deleting its archives.
However, ideally I'd like to make the archives of Lists A and B available
in one place to all the members of the new expanded List B.

If it was me, I'd just remove all the subscribers from List A, add a
dummy subscriber account set with delivery off and mod on, and then give
out the dummy account and its password to the folks on List B for
archive access.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Help with MAILMAN list password

My old password work too, do you know why? I change the root password
too ( the same) but doesnt work, now the old password and the new one
worked Help plz

Mauricio, the confusion may come from the fact that there might be as
many as three "passwords" involved here:

1) The password for the entire Mailman site installation (which you may
not even have if you didn't install Mailman yourself; this is set with
the mmsitepass command line program)

2) The password for the list itself (which is set when the list is
created or later with change_pw as you wrote)

3) The passwords for the list owners if they're subscribed to the list.

The confusion arises, I think, because Mailman actually accepts all of
the above in terms of logging into the admin web interface for a list.
So you might have changed one but not another, and it's still accepting
the "old" password because of that.

If this doesn't help, do you remember the commands you used? (sanitize
the password of course, i.e., don't post real passwords on this list)

I only ask because some of your terminology is a little bit ambiguous.
For example:

* "I use mailman to administrate my email lists" - how many lists are
you talking about? How many did you run change_pw for (or did you use
the --all option for all lists at once)? How many are exhibiting the
confusing "accept old password" behavior?

* You said your old password works too - where is it that it "works"; do
you mean logging into the web admin interface for the list (and is this
the case for one list or multiple lists)?

* Similarly, when you said "I need absolutely change the Admin Lists
password", what is it that you're trying to protect, the ability to log
into the admin interface? (such as
http://yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/mailman/admin/listname or
http://yourdomain.com/mailman/admin/listname)

I can think of some Python code you could run at the command line to see
which password is which, but how comfortable would you be with the Unix
shell to run test Python code there?

hope this helps,
Anthony

Mauricio, I wrote a script to test a given password to see if it matches
the site admin password, the list password for the given list, and the
moderator password for the same list.

If you want to try it out, you can download it from
http://blog.anthonyrthompson.com/listserv-to-mailman/code/utils/which_pw

(you'll need to change its permissions of course: chmod +rx which_pw)
The usage is: which_pw listname passwordtotest

(If your mailman files aren't in /usr/lib/mailman you'll need to modify
the sys.path.append line in that file.)

I also modified a copy of change_pw to allow for changing the moderator
password from the command line. If you want or need to do that, it's at

http://blog.anthonyrthompson.com/listserv-to-mailman/code/utils/change_mod_pw

(same stuff about chmod and /usr/lib/mailman applies as with which_pw)

In addition to the stuff Mark wrote, I'd ask, did you install Mailman on
the server or was it someone else?

I ask because it's possible that maybe the "mailman" list which you
mentioned having problems with, is managed differently from other lists?

We have a managed server and after I set up all our "real" lists I went
and deleted the "mailman" list thinking it was just a test/stub list.
Good thing I mentioned doing that in passing to our server admin, who
restored it and told me that it was an important special-purpose list.

Also, to find your Mailman version you can do bin/version (that's
ultra-basic but I didn't know it until recently myself :)

Anyway, hope this helps,

[Mailman-Users] Archive list with date stamp

2005-07-29 Thread Ricciotti Jr.,Anthony R.
I have a group of users that have requested that the archive lists
include the date/time of the email in the list.

In other words:

[Mailman-Users] wrapper error Wayne Sitton

Would show up as this:

[Mailman-Users] wrapper error Wayne Sitton Thu Apr 4 17:56:59 EST
2024

Is there a patch that I am missing? I thought I saw it in the feature
list, but now cannot find it anywhere. I am running 2.1.6 as I thought
it was there, and needed the security patches also.

Thanks
