[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1506454] Re: kswapd kills the whole OS by eaing up resources

2015-12-27 Thread Viktor Pal
I upgraded to Ubuntu 15.10 about a month ago and haven't experienced the
mentioned behavior with swap disabled since then.
Haven't tried with swap enabled though.

It is very likely that this bug has been fixed.

kswapd kills the whole OS by eaing up resources

Bug description:
I experience that my desktop (Ubuntu 15.04) gets unresponsive maybe once a
week.
When this happens the whole machine gets unresponsive immediately and only
restarting helps.
It only turns out from the atop logs what happened after the machine was
restarted. Atop is configured to run every 30 secs.
It is visible from the atop logs that kswapd0 is eating up all the CPU
resources.
Strange thing is that this happens despite there is no swap enabled.

This happens mostly when Virtualbox is running and only a few amount
  of memory is available.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1579190] [NEW] Key 5 automatically pressed on some Logitech wireless keyboards

2016-05-06 Thread Viktor Pal
Public bug reported:

I have a K520 Logitech keyboard and sometimes something starts to keep pressing
key 5.
It mostly happens when I leave the computer alone for some time, but sometimes
also just during regular usage.

It seems that this is a Linux specific issue as no one is complaining
about this issue under Windows, but a couple of people are complaining
for different versions of Ubuntu.

It is always 5 and WladyXX3740 claims on the Logitech forum that:
"happens on Ubuntu 15.10 and 16.04, does not happen on Ubuntu 15.04, probably
kernel related."

Here is where most of the people are complaining:
https://forums.logitech.com/t5/Keyboards-and-Keyboard-Mice/Ubuntu-15-10-and-K520-key-5-automatically-pressed-resulting-in/td-p/1488639

I discovered that this is related to my Logitech keyboard by running this
command:
xinput test-xi2 --root

Here is the device list:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1579190] Re: Key 5 automatically pressed on some Logitech wireless keyboards

2016-05-06 Thread Viktor Pal
Yes I WladyX I get freezes, but IIRC this is always how it was on Linux since I
use it. :)
Are the freezes happening to you at the same same time the 5 key is repeated?

Joseph Salisbury, yes I can try the latest upstream kernel.
Will let you know the results.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1579190] Re: Key 5 automatically pressed on some Logitech wireless keyboards

2016-05-14 Thread Viktor Pal
I'm using 4.6.0 rc6 since about a week and haven't experienced this issue since
then.
I would treat this as an evidence though. Will be continuing testing with the
4.6 kernel series.

Title:
Key 5 automatically pressed on some Logitech wireless keyboards

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I have a K520 Logitech keyboard and sometimes something starts to keep
pressing key 5.
It mostly happens when I leave the computer alone for some time, but
sometimes also just during regular usage.

  ⎡ Virtual core pointerid=2[master pointer (3)]

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1523444] Re: Xorg crahed with segfault

2016-01-07 Thread Viktor Pal
Crash happened again with following xorg output and also backtraces in dmesg:

Fatal server error:

After the crash I installed the suggested kernel and now got the following
version installed:
Linux hostname 4.4.0-040400rc8-generic #201601051225 SMP Tue Jan 5 17:27:39 UTC
2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Please note that I saw the following warning during the kernel installation:
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/skl_guc_ver4.bin for module i915

I don't know if this prevents us making sure that this error is fixed in
the kernel I installed.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1420935] [NEW] Centrino Wireless-N 1030 randomly disconnecting

2015-02-11 Thread Viktor Pal
Public bug reported:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using:
Description:Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca
Release:17.1

Ubuntu version:
Ubuntu 14.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname' or
by checking in Software Center
Maybe linux-image, linux-firmware or network-manager.

3) What you expected to happen
Permanent wifi connection.

4) What happened instead
Wireless is disconnecting randomly.

This wifi card was working for me with Ubuntu 12.04 for several years before
flawlessly.
Now I installed Linux Mint based on Ubuntu 14.04 and it is now randomly
disconnecting.
When it disconnects I disable wireless in the NM applet and enable it again and
wifi reconnects.
Logs regarding the disconnect and the reconnect are attached to the report.

The disconnect happens 10 to 60 minutes after it was connected or
reconnected.

The laptop I'm using is a Dell Inspiron N5110 which is officially supported by
Ubuntu:
http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201012-6932/

It seems that I'm not the only one with this issue:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1420935] Re: Centrino Wireless-N 1030 randomly disconnecting

2015-02-25 Thread Viktor Pal
To workaround this bug.

Create a file named: /etc/modprobe.d/wifi_bug.conf

Add the following lines to the file:
options iwlmvm power_scheme=1
options iwlwifi bt_coex_active=N swcrypto=1 11n_disable=1

Set the file's ownership the same as other files in that folder.

Reboot.

Please note though that this fixes the issue, but prevents N mode from
working, so you are stick with B and G modes.

Otherwise I'm very disappointed that no one cares about this bug as I would be
glad to provide all the information I'm able to to get this fixed.
The other thing that makes me very sad is that this was already working
perfectly in the past with 12.04 and now it isn't.
This really sounds to me like a step backwards...

Sorry for being emotional.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1579190] Re: Key 5 automatically pressed on some Logitech wireless keyboards

2016-06-14 Thread Viktor Pal
Hi Tim Passingham (tim-8aw3u04umo),

you are not using the patched kernel.
The patched is: 4.4.0-22-generic #40+lp1579190
And you are using: 4.4.0-24

What might have happened is that you installed the patched kernel and then you
updated Ubuntu and 4.4.0-24 was installed and set as the default kernel.
So after you restarted your machine your OS is not running the patched kernel
any more.
To run the patched kernel you either have to modify the default kernel in the
GRUB configuration or explicitly choose the patched kernel on startup.

BTW, I'm running 4.4.0-22-generic #40+lp1579190 since few days without any
issues.
Any chance for this patch to get into the Ubuntu 16.04 repositories?

2016-06-14 Thread Viktor Pal
Hi Tim Passingham (tim-8aw3u04umo),

the new kernel you installed (4.4.0-24) will definitely produce the issue as it
does not contain the patch.
Please clarify if you where also able to reproduce the issue with
4.4.0-22-generic #40+lp1579190.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1579190] Re: Key 5 automatically pressed on some Logitech wireless keyboards

2016-11-22 Thread Viktor Pal
Greetings Geoffrey,

I'm running the latest Mint (18) and I did not see issues with my K520 keyboard
so far.
I'm using the kernel that comes (I guess 4.4) with the release.
So I guess updating the kernel to the latest should definitely help.
The patch was released with 4.4.0-31.50 as I see.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1579190] Re: Key 5 automatically pressed on some Logitech wireless keyboards

2016-05-30 Thread Viktor Pal
Still not able to reproduce this with 4.6 kernel series.
It is very likely that this issue is already fixed there.
Any chance this could be backported to the xenial kernel as this is an LTS
release?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1462919] Re: kswapd pulls server down every 2 weeks.

2015-10-14 Thread Viktor Pal
I experience the same on desktop (15.04) maybe once a week.
I presume that this happens when some laking application starts to eat up all
the memory quickly.

I suppose what should happen is that the kernel OOMs and kills some application
and everything is back to normal.
What happens though is that the machine dies. Of course every unsaved work and
open windows and applications are lost, which is very unfortunate.

Bug description:

CPU and might bring the machine down to a crawl making is unable to
  access it over the network.

I say "might", because it's only a very clear feeling that I have. I
do not know it for sure.

Anyway the fact is that I have two server that once every 2 week ends
up totally unaccessible from the network. They can be pinged though.
Logging in locally takes a long time. Rebooting them locally takes a
long time. They have absolutely no noticeable disk IO when in this
  stalled state.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1506454] Re: kswapd kills the whole OS by eaing up resources

2015-10-22 Thread Viktor Pal
Hi it seems that updating BIOS has not solved this issue as my Desktop just
crashed with the new BIOS.
See the requested output here.
$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
L01 v02.65
07/13/2015

What happens is that my desktop completely freezes and the only thing that is
responding is the mouse pointer.
I'm able to move the mouse pointer, but there is no reaction to any keystroke
or mouse click in the DE.
Gnome system monitor also stops updating.

Sometimes I'm able to Ctrl + Alt + F1 to the terminal and type my
username and password, but I never get a prompt.

I use sysrq commands to reboot the computer.

After the reboot checking the atop snapshots created around the time the OS
gets unresponsive shows that kswapd0 is generating high read load on the root
volume (system_vg-root_lv) and hereby also on the disk containing it (sda) and
also high system load (PRC | sys 18.59s | user 0.20s | ).
The disk and the volume are both 101% busy and there is a heavy read on them:
MBr/s 362.31 (it is and SSD).
There is also another disk in the computer and there is no load on that.

Memory usage looks like this:
MEM | tot 7.7G | free 127.4M | cache 1.3G | dirty 0.0M | buff
0.4M | slab 118.6M

So it looks like kswapd0 is heavily reading the root filesystem or
partition which is generating a high system load and killing the OS.

If you need any additional information just let me know.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1506454] Re: kswapd kills the whole OS by eaing up resources

2015-10-22 Thread Viktor Pal
As an additional note AFAIK this only happened when VirtualBox was running.
Although I don't know if this is related to the fact that VirtualBox is running
or the fact that there is small amount of free memory available on the system
when it is running.
And again I would like to emphasize that there is no SWAP enabled on the
system, but this already happened when there was and this is why I switched it
of.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1506454] Re: kswapd kills the whole OS by eaing up resources

2015-10-26 Thread Viktor Pal
I will update to Ubuntu 15.10 in the next 1-2 weeks. It has a pretty recent
kernel (4.2).
If I'm still able to reproduce this issue there I will install the latest
kernel from the link.
Will get back with the results.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1420935] Re: Centrino Wireless-N 1030 randomly disconnecting

2015-11-18 Thread Viktor Pal
Just to follow up on this.
I upgraded a few weeks before to Ubuntu 15.10 and it looks like this bug is
completely fixed.

It has the following kernel:
Linux 4.2.0-18-generic #22-Ubuntu SMP Fri Nov 6 18:25:50 UTC 2015 x86_64
GNU/Linux

Wifi works stable without any additional tweaks.

Happy that this was fixed, thanks.

  Centrino Wireless-N 1030 randomly disconnecting

Status in linux-firmware package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  1) The release of Ubuntu you are using:
  Description: Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca
  Release: 17.1

  Ubuntu version:
  Ubuntu 14.04

  2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname'
or by checking in Software Center
  Maybe linux-image, linux-firmware or network-manager.

  3) What you expected to happen
  Permanent wifi connection.

  4) What happened instead
  Wireless is disconnecting randomly.

This wifi card was working for me with Ubuntu 12.04 for several years before
flawlessly.
Now I installed Linux Mint based on Ubuntu 14.04 and it is now randomly
disconnecting.
When it disconnects I disable wireless in the NM applet and enable it again
and wifi reconnects.
Logs regarding the disconnect and the reconnect are attached to the report.

The disconnect happens 10 to 60 minutes after it was connected or
  reconnected.

The laptop I'm using is a Dell Inspiron N5110 which is officially supported
by Ubuntu:
