[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1969326] Re: Enable hotspot feature for Realtek 8821CE

2022-04-27 Thread Soumadeep Sarkar
I am using ubuntu 22.04. My lapitop has Realtek 8821CE. Kernel version
is 5.15.0-27-generic. Wifi hotspot turns on, but other devices are
unable to connect. Is this problem related to this bug?

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I am using the Realtek 8821C PCIE Wifi driver that is provided in the
Additional drivers app of Ubuntu. When I connect to a 2.4 ghz network,
the internet speed is very slow, it rarely goes above 4mbps. But the
driver works fine when connected to a 5ghz network, easily reaching
speeds of over 80mbps. I don't think it is a problem of my wifi router
because in Windows OS running on the same laptop, I mostly get speeds
of around 40mbps when connected to the 2.4 ghz network.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1969326] Re: Enable hotspot feature for Realtek 8821CE

2022-05-06 Thread Soumadeep Sarkar
Can someone please verify the fix? I cannot verify the fix for Ubuntu
20.04, I am running Ubuntu 22.04 and I enabled proposed from software &
updates, there were a few kernel updates, the latest one being
5.15.0-30-generic. I did all the available updates in proposed. But wifi
hotspot still doesn't work on Ubuntu 22.04. My smartphone is able to
detect the hotspot but is unable to connect to it.

2022-05-09 Thread Soumadeep Sarkar
@andch, after searching the internet some more, I figured out that I
needed to add the proposed for focal in /etc/apt/sources.list in order
to install the kernel 5.14.0-1035.38 (the same one that you installed).
So I did all that, and THE FIX WORKS. My smartphone can connect to the
hotspot and access the internet.

5.13.0-23 HWE kernel on Linux Mint 20.2 Xfce (Ubuntu 20.04.3)
Had been using the 5.13 HWE kernel for months with no problems.
Today the kernel and linux-firmware updated.
5.13.0-23 kernel now takes about 2 minutes to boot to the login screen.
Normal boot time is 8 seconds.
During that time the pc is frozen with only a _ underline cursor that doesn't
flash.
Can't change terminals with Ctrl+Alt+F1, etc.
Problem does not occur when booting 5.11.0-44 or 5.4.0-92 so I'm pretty sure
the problem is in the kernel and not linux-firmware.

2022-01-04 Thread Soumadeep Sarkar
Public bug reported:

After updating the kernel to 5.13.0-23-generic, everything seems very
very slow. The operating system takes a long time to reach the desktop,
applications like google chrome, telegram take a long time to open. Till
now, out of the 4 times I have started ubuntu using kernel
5.13.0-23-generic, 3 times everything was slow, and 1 time things were
normal and fast as usual.

My processor is AMD Ryzen 3500u.

2022-01-05 Thread Soumadeep Sarkar
My current workaround is to go into advanced options for ubuntu from the
grub menu while starting the computer, and select an earlier kernel
version, 5.13.0-22-generic in my case.

Yes, the reporter of bug 1956396 was not able to run apport. I was able
to open gnome-terminal, so I reported it by running ubuntu-bug linux.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1937926] [NEW] Realtek 8821C PCIe Wifi driver problem, wifi speed very slow on connecting to 2.4ghz network.

2021-07-24 Thread Soumadeep Sarkar
Public bug reported:

I am using the Realtek 8821C PCIE Wifi driver that is provided in the
Additional drivers app of Ubuntu. When I connect to a 2.4 ghz network,
the internet speed is very slow, it rarely goes above 4mbps. But the
driver works fine when connected to a 5ghz network, easily reaching
speeds of over 80mbps. I don't think it is a problem of my wifi router
because in Windows OS running on the same laptop, I mostly get speeds of
around 40mbps when connected to the 2.4 ghz network.

1. What is the full computer model number?
Ans: HP Laptop 15s-eq0500AU.
2. If you update your BIOS to the newest version following the guide here, does
this change anything?
Ans: No.
3. Regarding your wireless Access Point (WAP):
3o. What frequency are you using (2.4GHz, 5GHz, etc.)?
Ans: 2.4 GHz
3p. If you change frequency does it change anything?
Ans: Yes, speed is good in 5ghz
4. Does another wireless device tested with the WAP have the same problem as
the hardware you initially reported with?
Ans: No.
5. What is the distance of the wireless device from the WAP?
Ans: 6 metre
6. What is the number and type of obstructions between your device and the WAP?
Ans: 2
6a. If you bring the device close to the WAP and eliminate obstructions, does
this change anything?
Ans: No
7. Does the issue occur with different WAPs?
Ans: Yes
8. Is it a regression (i.e. did the problem happen in a prior Ubuntu release)?
If so, what release specifically did it last work with? If you do not know,
could you please test for this in the earliest release of Ubuntu that is
supported as per Ubuntu Releases?
Ans: I don't know if it is a regression and I cannot test for this in another
release of Ubuntu.
9. Does this problem occur in the newest mainline kernel following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds? Please mention what specific
version of the mainline kernel you tested with in your report.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1937926] Re: Realtek 8821C PCIe Wifi driver problem, wifi speed very slow on connecting to 2.4ghz network.

2021-08-09 Thread Soumadeep Sarkar
:~$ iw dev wlan0 link
command failed: No such device (-19)
:~$ iw dev wlan0 get power_save
command failed: No such device (-19)

Seems like there is no device named wlan0. I think it is wlo1 instead of wlan0
on my laptop. When I replace wlan0 with wlo1, the results are as follows:
:~$ iw dev wlo1 link
Connected to 50:2b:73:74:69:91 (on wlo1)
SSID: Crossroads
freq: 2412
signal: -63 dBm
tx bitrate: 150.0 MBit/s
:~$ iw dev wlo1 get power_save
Power save: on

:~$ iw dev wlan0 set power_save off
command failed: No such device (-19)
:~$ iw dev wlo1 set power_save off
command failed: Operation not permitted (-1)
:~$ sudo iw dev wlo1 set power_save off
[sudo] password for soumadeepsarkar1:
:~$ iw dev wlo1 get power_save
Power save: off

Even after setting power_save to off, it speed doesn't improve.
These are the speeds tested using speedtest.net after setting power_save to off

Title:
Realtek 8821C PCIe Wifi driver problem, wifi speed very slow on
  connecting to 2.4ghz network.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I am using the Realtek 8821C PCIE Wifi driver that is provided in the
Additional drivers app of Ubuntu. When I connect to a 2.4 ghz network,
the internet speed is very slow, it rarely goes above 4mbps. But the
driver works fine when connected to a 5ghz network, easily reaching
speeds of over 80mbps. I don't think it is a problem of my wifi router
because in Windows OS running on the same laptop, I mostly get speeds
of around 40mbps when connected to the 2.4 ghz network.

  1. What is the full computer model number?
  Ans: HP Laptop 15s-eq0500AU.
  2. If you update your BIOS to the newest version following the guide here,
does this change anything?
  Ans: No.
  3. Regarding your wireless Access Point (WAP):
3c. What wireless connection type are you using (802.11ac, 802.11n 150/300,
802.11g, etc.)?
  Ans: 802.11n
3d. If you switch to a different wireless type (802.11g or 802.11n if you are
using 802.11g) does this change anything?
Ans: Yes, in the 5ghz 802.11ac type, the speed is very normally very good.
3f. In order to understand the wireless environment your WAP is working in,
please provide the output of the following terminal command:
