[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1813873] Re: Userspace break as a result of missing patch backport
I am running 18.04 with linux-image-generic-hwe-18.04 installed. I can confirm that the issue has been resolved with the latest kernel which is 4.18.0-15-generic. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1813873 Title: Userspace break as a result of missing patch backport Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Fix Committed Status in linux source package in Xenial: Fix Committed Status in linux source package in Bionic: Fix Committed Status in linux source package in Cosmic: Fix Released Bug description: Hi, The most recent set of Ubuntu kernels applied a variety of tty patches including: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/c96cf923a98d1b094df9f0cf97a83e118817e31b But have not applied the more recent https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/d3736d82e8169768218ee0ef68718875918091a0 patch. This second patch is required to prevent a rather serious regression where userspace applications reading from stdin can receive EAGAIN when they should not. I will try to link correspondence from the mailing list archives once they are available, but for now if you have access to the linux- console mailing list you can find discussion under the thread "Userspace break? read from STDIN returns EAGAIN if tty is "touched"". I would appreciate it if this could be examined soon as it is a regression on userspace. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1813873] Re: Userspace break as a result of missing patch backport
I think I may have run into another issue related to the same bug. While the login loop problem appears to have been fixed, the fix does not seem to have cascaded down to other prompts that one may encounter in special circumstances. In my case, I had an external USB drive connected to my server and this happened to have been powered off (physically) when booting. As expected, the system did not complete the boot process and stopped (momentarily) at the "Enter Ctrl-D etc" prompt to allow repair. Well, it just kept going. I was unable to get in at all and eventually just had to physically reset the box and reconnect power to the USB drive. So the looping that used to happen at the console login persists when dropping to the emergency shell. I will be grateful if anyone else can confirm. Just add a spurious entry to fstab and try to reboot. Changing status to confirmed per instructions received in email. The system crash does not permit apport bug reporting as apport simply doesn't detect a crash. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1665911] Re: Linux 4.8 hangs system when playing video
I downgraded the nvidia driver to nvidia-current-updates (304). The system locked-up again while playing videos but this time around it came back for a few seconds. While the mouse and keyboard were not responsive, I was able to see the video move rapidly and my conky scripts were updating for the same period. The logs above are from the session immediately following the hard reset. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1665911] Re: Linux 4.8 hangs system when playing video
I have tested with 4.10 (linux- image-4.10.0-041000-generic_4.10.0-041000.201702191831_amd64) and can confirm that the lockup can be reproduced in this kernel as well. Some additional information that may help: 1. This is a multiboot machine and I have Arch and Manjaro installed. I can reproduce the lockup on both (kernel 4.9x) so this definitely appears to be something to do with kernel. 2. The problem seems to also be network related as the lockups occur most frequently with streaming video. Kernel 4.4x LTS is rock-solid and does not exhibit this behavior. Let me know what else I can do to help troubleshoot and identify the issue. Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1387922] Re: Problem resuming from suspend after update to 3.13.0-39-generic
Christopher, I have found some more quirks along the way. The problem was reproducible going back all the way to linux-image-3.13.0-32-generic but it doesn't happen immediately as it does with linux- image-3.13.0-39-generic. Also, do I need to map this back and test the mainline also? I haven't been able to put in as much time as I had anticipated so it is going slow. Please advise. Thanks. Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1387922] Re: Problem resuming from suspend after update to 3.13.0-39-generic
To explain a bit further, I don't remember encountering this issue before linux-image-3.13.0-39-generic. Could it be that the issue is with some other package installed along with the kernel, perhaps, firmware? I am unable to reproduce the problem with 3.16. Please note that I am not a developer or even an expert Linux user and could be way off the track here. Thanks. > Date: Sat, 15 Nov 2014 21:04:05 + > From: 1387...@bugs.launchpad.net > To: rs...@hotmail.com > Subject: RE: [Bug 1387922] Re: Problem resuming from suspend after update to > 3.13.0-39-generic > > Christopher, > > I have found some more quirks along the way. I have tried the kernels from this folder (amd64): http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.13.11.10-trusty/ I can reproduce the problem with the new mainline kernel also. Please let me know if this is the version that you wanted me to test. If it is, I shall go ahead and tag it as outlined by you before. Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1387922] Re: Problem resuming from suspend after update to 3.13.0-39-generic
I tried booting both rc1 and rc2. Testing is inconclusive because I could not proceed beyond the login screen. I did test suspend from the login screen but could not get video on resume. However, the computer did not go to sleep again. I am not sure if this is reliable. Please advise on how to proceed. Thanks for your patience. On the first push, the computer wakes up and then immediately goes back to sleep. It actually wakes up and gives me the login screen on the second push. This problem started after the last kernel update and subsequent reboot. Please let me know if any additional information is needed. Thanks.
