[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1832091] [NEW] Kernel 5.0.0-16 keyboard malfunction

2019-06-08 Thread Mike Rans
Public bug reported:

Upgrading to kernel package linux-image-5.0.0-16-generic causes the
keyboard which is a USB 2 device connected to a USB C hub on my Dell XPS
13 to behave erratically. The previous kernel (linux-
image-5.0.0-15-generic) doesn't have this problem. (The keyboard is fine
when plugged directly into the laptop's USB rather than into the USB C
hub on 5.0.0-16, so it seems to be a USB C problem in 5.0.0-16).

Ubuntu 5.0.0-16.17~18.04.1-generic 5.0.8

Title:
  Kernel 5.0.0-16 & 5.0.0-17 USB-2 keyboard on USB-C dock malfunction

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Upgrading to kernel package linux-image-5.0.0-16-generic causes the
keyboard which is a USB 2 device connected to a USB C hub on my Dell
XPS 13 to behave erratically. The previous kernel (linux-
image-5.0.0-15-generic) doesn't have this problem. (The keyboard is
fine when plugged directly into the laptop's USB rather than into the
USB C hub on 5.0.0-16, so it seems to be a USB C problem in 5.0.0-16).

Bug description:
Bluetooth HSP/HFP audio quality is poor on Ubuntu comparative to all
other major platforms (Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, Android, iOS).

Modern Bluetooth headsets (such as the Bose QC series headphones, many
others) are capable of using HFP 1.6 with mSBC 16kHz audio encoding.
As it currently stands, Ubuntu defaults to only supporting HSP
headsets using 8kHz CVSD, and is incapable of supporting HFP 1.6 at
  this time.

The ChromiumOS team recently tackled this issue -
  https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=843048

Their efforts may assist in bringing this to Ubuntu, however it
appears that there are quite a lot of differences considering they
have developed their own audio server solution etc.

The Bluetooth Telephony Working Group published the HFP 1.6 spec in
  May 2011 -
  https://www.bluetooth.org/docman/handlers/downloaddoc.ashx?doc_id=238193

Patches have been proposed in the past for this issue to the kernel
  and PulseAudio:

  PulseAudio: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/245272/
  Kernel: https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-bluetooth/msg76982.html

It appears that the Chromium OS team applied the same kernel patch:

I pair it again, every time.

This is how things worked with 24.04 LTS:

  - I turn on the headset, it plays a little "I'm on" trill
  - the headset autoconnects to my phone and plays a little "I'm connected
trill"
  - the headset autoconnects to my laptop and plays a little "I'm connected
trill" (this was sometimes delayed by a few tens seconds, so sometimes I sped
things up by running a shell script to `bluetoothctl connect
$headset_mac_address`)
  - I can now play sounds through the headset

This is how thigs go with 24.10:

  - I turn on the headset, it plays a little "I'm on" trill
  - the headset autoconnects to my phone and plays a little "I'm connected
trill"
  - the second connection never comes through
  - I run `bluetoothctl connect $headset_mac_address` and I get

  Attempting to connect to 60:AB:D2:43:49:4D
  [CHG] Device 60:AB:D2:43:49:4D Connected: yes
  Failed to connect: org.bluez.Error.Failed br-connection-unknown

  - I open the Bose Connect app on my phone to look at the list of connections.
It shows my phone and nothing else. It should be showing my laptop ("blynas")
under History, and it used to do that before the upgrade.
  - I click "Connect new..." in the phone app (or pull and hold the button on
the headset itself to put it in pairing mode), I hear a "ready to be paired"
trill, I run `bluetooth connect $headset_mac_address` again (or click connect
in gnome-control-center), and it connects fine. I can play music and
everything. "blynas" is shown in the Current list of connected devices

  - I turn off the headset, I turn it back on
  - the headset autoconnects to both the phone and the laptop, because I'm
intentionally trying to reproduce the bug, so of course it won't bug.

Previously, whenever I turned the headset on after turning it off for
a longer span of time, I had to do the 'Connect new...' thing.

BTW once I tried to tell gnome-control-center to forget the headset,
then paired it fresh, which got me a fresh new LinkKey in
/var/lib/bluetooth/, and things worked fine until another turn-off-
  wait-hours-turn-on-oh-hey-what-is-this-new-laptop-I-don't-know-her-do-
  the-pairing-dance-again-please.

(I keep track of the link key changes because I have a Windows 10
partition on this machine and I sometimes boot it, so I need to keep
the link key synchronized between Ubuntu and the Windows registry,
otherwise the headset will work only in one of the two OSes. However
I haven't booted Windows in months if not years, so this should not be
  relevant.)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2085162] Re: Bluetooth headphones connect erratically

2024-11-11 Thread Mike Rans
Thank you Sitsofe. That patch worked for me. For any who want to try it,
I followed this guide to rebuild a Debian package:
https://www.linuxjournal.com/content/rebuilding-and-modifying-debian-
packages, then before the debuild step, applied the patch with patch -p1
< bluez-fix-address.patch.

Bug description:
  Description of the problem
A pair of Sony Sony WH-H900N Bluetooth headphones often refuses to re-connect
with a Lenovo V15 G2 ALC laptop. These headphones pair without trouble to a
MacBook Pro and an Android phone.

  Step to reproduce:
  1. Put the headphones into discovery mode.
  2. Go to Settings -> Bluetooth and connect to the headphones.
  3. Reboot the laptop.
  4. Go to Settings -> Bluetooth
  5. Click on the headphones.
  6. Try to connect to the headphones.
  7. If step 6. fails try to disconnect.
  8. Go to step 6.

  Expected result:
After step 6 for headphones to be connected and for headphones to announce
"Bluetooth connected".

  Actual result:
Sometimes the "connected" slider slides back to unconnected. Sometimes the
slider remains "on" but the headphones don't announce that they are connected
and no headphones appear in sound settings.

  How reproducible is the problem:
Fairly reproducible. It can sometimes takes 30 or more connection attempts
before a real connection is established.
