[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models
Installing 4.4.19-041409 does not seem to work on my Dell Dimension E521, which is to say that I am able to download the packages from kernel.ubuntu.com, and install them apparently successfully. However, the system will not boot that kernel. I am able to boot 4.10.0-42 (from Ubuntu 16.10) but then I cannot login to the desktop. I can, however, log in to a shell. But my BIOS is still frotzed. Disabling downloads of 17.10 is nice, but I was in Ubuntu 16.10 and was prompted to Upgrade, so I did. Why was the upgrade option not disabled? Meh. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1734147 Title: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models Status in Linux: Unknown Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in linux-hwe-edge source package in Xenial: Fix Released Status in linux-oem source package in Xenial: Fix Released Status in linux source package in Artful: Fix Released Bug description: Description: An update to linux kernel on Ubuntu 17.10 that enabled the intel-spi-* drivers made Insyde BIOS unusable. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1326757] [NEW] system goes to sleep at GDM window and never wakes up
Public bug reported: On my Dell Dimension E521, a desktop system, if I leave the system at the login prompt it will very quickly go to sleep. When I press the power button to wake it, the system seems to restart, but the screen and the keyboard never wake up. I have to poke it in the eye and reboot. This behavior effectively renders the machine unusable if I am away. If the power goes out and the system reboots, it will very quickly sleep and never wake up. Thus, I cannot use it remotely. And if I forget to immediately (IMMEDIATELY) log in, the system will go to sleep and I have to hard power off and reboot. Very annoying. This only happened once I upgraded to 14.04. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1326759] [NEW] System sleeps at GDM prompt even when told not to
Public bug reported: After upgrading to 14.04, my Dell Dimension E521 sleeps at the GDM login window after a short amount of time. But I have used the System Settings -> Power Management -> Energy Saving panel to tell it never to Suspend Session. I have Screen Energy Saving set to 10 minutes. I have tried many different settings based on recommendations found on the web, but no matter what, the system sleeps at the GDM login window after a short amount of time. I'm using Kubuntu, running KDE, not that horrible Ubuntu interface for tablet users. This sleep behavior causes two problems: 1) The system goes to sleep and never wakes up, but that is the subject of a different bug. 2) If the system reboots for any reason, it then promptly goes to sleep, which means that it is essentially down, and then I cannot access it remotely. And I access it remotely quite often. I rely on my system being up and accessible, and this bug prevents me from using the system after it reboots. For example, if the power goes out at my house (which it does). I have the BIOS set to reboot after power loss, but then the system goes to sleep. So, how do I tell my system NOT to go to sleep while waiting for login at the GDM window? Why do the Power Management settings appear to do nothing at the GDM window? How do I configure the GDM window sleep behavior? [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1326757] Re: [Dell Dimension E521] System goes to sleep at GDM window and never wakes up
It was a real pain to install the latest mainline rc kernel. I had to uninstall my nvidia driver, and then the system couldn't bring up X correctly. Even switching to the text console was painful, because the system would hang periodically. So I couldn't bring up a browser to follow the DebuggingKernelSuspend instructions. I will try again, but it probably won't be until tomorrow. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1326757 Title: [Dell Dimension E521] System goes to sleep at GDM window and never wakes up Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: On my Dell Dimension E521, a desktop system, if I leave the system at the login prompt it will very quickly go to sleep. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1326759] Re: System sleeps at GDM prompt even when told not to
** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1326759 Title: System sleeps at GDM prompt even when told not to Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: After upgrading to 14.04, my Dell Dimension E521 sleeps at the GDM login window after a short amount of time. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1326759] Re: System sleeps at GDM prompt even when told not to
Sorry, I won't be able to get the kernel bisection until perhaps the middle of July but most likely the beginning of August. I am traveling a lot this summer and won't have more than a week at home until August. And I'm not going to be spending those few days at home bisecting a kernel. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1326759 Title: System sleeps at GDM prompt even when told not to Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: After upgrading to 14.04, my Dell Dimension E521 sleeps at the GDM login window after a short amount of time. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1326759] Re: System sleeps at GDM prompt even when told not to
I have tried installing a number of older kernels in order to attempt to find the last known good or first known bad kernel, following the examples on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection in the "Bisecting Ubuntu kernel versions" section. Not one of the kernels I have installed has booted correctly. I have guessed that the bogus kernel was built between the last good saucy 13.10 kernel I used and the first trusty 14.04 kernel I installed. First I installed trusty 3.12.0-8.16. It would not boot. I got a full crash. Then I installed saucy 3.11.0-26.45. It would not boot because MDADM could not find my RAIDs. So then I tried trusty 3.13.0-4.19. It would not boot, again because MDADM: Incrementally starting RAID arrays... mdadm: CREATE group disk not found Incrementally started RAID arrays. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I have been installing all three images as per the wiki page, for example: linux-headers-3.13.0-4_3.13.0-4.19_all.deb linux-image-3.13.0-4-generic_3.13.0-4.19_amd64.deb linux-headers-3.13.0-4-generic_3.13.0-4.19_amd64.deb -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1326759 Title: System sleeps at GDM prompt even when told not to Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: After upgrading to 14.04, my Dell Dimension E521 sleeps at the GDM login window after a short amount of time. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1326757] Re: [Dell Dimension E521] System goes to sleep at GDM window and never wakes up
Arf. The problem exists in this kernel. There are two bugs, I've reported them both, and neither has been fixed. Is this a new bug? What makes you say so? I don't understand. The issue is not the CPU winding up to the speed of sound, though that certainly is, um, interesting. The issue is that, first, the system goes to sleep if I don't login immediately after boot, and, second, that if I attempt to wake up the system that is sleeping, which it shouldn't be doing in the first place, it doesn't ever wake up. The system should not go to sleep, ever. And it does. That's a bug. And that's really the only bug I care about. I don't want my system to go to sleep. Hibernate. Snooze. Whatever. I told it not to. And it does, over my desperate and useless protests. The fact that it doesn't wake up is a bummer, but since it should never have gone to sleep in the first place, it's really just an annoying side effect of the first problem. What is it to me if it acts out while failing to wake up? Still, if you insist... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1326757 Title: [Dell Dimension E521] System goes to sleep at GDM window and never wakes up Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: On my Dell Dimension E521, a desktop system, if I leave the system at the login prompt it will very quickly go to sleep. By the way, what driver maintainer list am I supposed to send to? And I quote: Reporting non-USB bugs upstream If the bug is not in USB, the first step in reporting a bug upstream is to find the maintainer of the driver for the bug from the MAINTAINERS list, or if a kernel graphics issue http://www.x.org/wiki/XorgMailingLists/. Then, using the Kernel.org format, please: Send an E-Mail to the mailing list indicated by the 'L:' (use the maintainer E-Mail ONLY if no list is specified). If this is a regression, CC the submitter of the regression commit, and the maintainer. Also, CC those who have made recent (6 months to a year) changes to the module you are reporting about. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1326757] Re: [Dell Dimension E521] System goes to sleep at GDM window and never wakes up
I am unable to commit bisect the kernel because I can't even get the system to boot with any of the older kernels. The bug is still happening, which is to say that the system boots to the login prompt, then after a minute or so goes immediately to sleep (hibernate?). When I press the power button to wake the system, the keyboard and monitor are dead and the system never comes back awake. I have to hold down the power button to kill the system, and then reboot from scratch. Once the system comes back up (after doing fsck etc.) and I log in (because if I don't, I get to start the entire process all over again), I get error dialogs saying there was a problem with Ubuntu. Well, duh, I knew that. If you have any hints on how to get my system to come up with the older kernels, please offer them now. If you have a fix for this bug, please offer it now. Otherwise, I know not how to help isolate the problem. Aside from buying a different system, which is silly. This one (mostly) works. Aside from two really annoying Ubuntu bugs. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1393013] Re: [Dell Dimension E521] Computer hangs when resuming after suspend
Actually, I'm not sure that the bug really exists in the upstream kernel, because I'm not certain that the upstream kernel successfully suspended. The power button light was still green, and when I pressed it, nothing actually happened. Should I try some other kernel until I'm absolutely certain that it suspended correctly? ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists- upstream-3.18-rc4 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1393013 Title: [Dell Dimension E521] Computer hangs when resuming after suspend Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: When my computer suspends, it will never fully wake back up. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1393013] Re: [Dell Dimension E521] Computer hangs when resuming after suspend
By the way, I have a memory of attempting to bisect just the kernels (ignoring the commits) having a bad result. Please refer to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1326757/comments/15 in which I documented bad experiences attempting just such. And I quote: I have tried installing a number of older kernels in order to attempt to find the last known good or first known bad kernel, following the examples on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection in the "Bisecting Ubuntu kernel versions" section. I have been installing all three images as per the wiki page, for example: linux-headers-3.13.0-4_3.13.0-4.19_all.deb linux-image-3.13.0-4-generic_3.13.0-4.19_amd64.deb linux-headers-3.13.0-4-generic_3.13.0-4.19_amd64.deb -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1393013 Title: [Dell Dimension E521] Computer hangs when resuming after suspend Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: When my computer suspends, it will never fully wake back up. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1393013] Re: [Dell Dimension E521] Computer hangs when resuming after suspend
Well, here's the deal. I was running 13.10 and I never had any problem with it. But I did not use suspend nor did I use hibernate. I either had a fully up and running system or I shut it down cold. I never had any reason to want to use suspend or hibernate. Then I upgraded to 14.04 and immediately I start having two problems, the first being that the system would suspend itself after 1 minute if I did not log in at the GDM prompt, and the second being that if I attempted to awaken the system from suspend it would never wake up (no keyboard, no mouse, no network). As far as priority goes, I would prefer that the first problem were solved. I would not care in the least that the system would never wake up after suspend if the system wouldn't suspend in the first place. In fact, it's the fact that the system suspends itself even though I don't want it to that is the real source of headache for me. The fact it never wakes up is fixable with a hard power off and reboot and log in immediately upon GDM. The fact it suspends is not fixable, because if the power goes out and I'm not home and it reboots and I don't log in (because I'm not home) then the system suspends and it's not usable from my remote location. Which sucks big green... well, you get the picture. So when it comes right down to it, I'd rather efforts were put toward figuring out how I can configure my machine not to suspend in the first place. I'm sorry, I'm reading the kernel bisect page, and I really have no idea where to start. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1326757] Re: [Dell Dimension E521] System goes to sleep at GDM window and never wakes up
I have tried installing a number of older kernels in order to attempt to find the last known good or first known bad kernel, following the examples on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection in the "Bisecting Ubuntu kernel versions" section. I have been installing all three images as per the wiki page, for example: linux-headers-3.13.0-4_3.13.0-4.19_all.deb linux-image-3.13.0-4-generic_3.13.0-4.19_amd64.deb linux-headers-3.13.0-4-generic_3.13.0-4.19_amd64.deb -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1326757 Title: [Dell Dimension E521] System goes to sleep at GDM window and never wakes up Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: On my Dell Dimension E521, a desktop system, if I leave the system at the login prompt it will very quickly go to sleep. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1326757] Re: [Dell Dimension E521] System goes to sleep at GDM window and never wakes up
On a related note, perhaps, a power surge seems to have fried my GFX board (or perhaps the PCIe slot itself), so I am reduced to using the motherboard bog standard VGA. The problem still occurs. That is, the system boots and then, after about a minute, goes to sleep. Never to wake up.
