Bug description:
Ubuntu 22.04 development branch on kernel 5.15.0-17-generic @
  18/1/2022

Booting into desktop gets heavy screen flickering and disforming (unusable)
both booting on xorg and wayland

on kernel 5.13 it did not occur so heavy (only little glitches once in
  a while see bug 1948778)

adding the kernel paramater intel_idle.max_cstate=4 fixed this

i had these same bugs on this machine before:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1973167] Re: linux-image-4.15.0-177-generic freezes on the welcome screen

Same problem, Dell Precision 5510. I have paused updates, waiting for
the fix to be released.

Title:
linux-image-4.15.0-177-generic freezes on the welcome screen

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in linux source package in Bionic:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  == SRU Justification ==
  [Impact]
Freeze at boot. intel-lpss is trying to synchronously load idma64 module
  in asynchronous conext.

  [Fix]
Let userspace load the module to avoid the deadlock.

  [Test]
Users confirmed the proposed fix can solve the issue.

  [Where problems could occur]
Userspace can handle modules loading just fine, so there shouldn't be
  any surprise.

  == Original Bug Report ==
After updating to linux-image-4.15.0-177-generic, my machine completely
freezes on the Ubuntu Welcome screen, i.e. right after switching to GUI mode.
The mouse pointer is frozen, the keyboard does not even respond to CAPS LOCK or
NUM LOCK, pressing CTRL+ALT+F2 shows no reaction.

I cannot work with my machine at this point and have to hard reset it.

Selecting advanced boot options in grub and selecting the previous
linux kernel 4.15.0-176 makes it work again. So this bad bug was
introduced with the 4.15.0-177 kernel release.

I tried removing the nvidia-driver-510 package, presumably making
Ubuntu use the "nouveau" driver, and with that, I could use the
welcome screen and log in, but the machine still froze shortly
  afterwards.

So maybe this is some sort of interference with my GeForce 1080
graphics card, but it is not specific to the driver used.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1775717] Re: CPU/GPU Fans suddenly go 100% RPM on Asus ROG G752VT

2022-06-18 Thread Sergey Ivanov
It is still reproducible for me under 22.04.

Steps:
1) switch to RU layout.
2) start to input cyrilic text somewhere. For me it is also enough to simply
move mouse ponter and click for 15-20 seconds.

Fan became work on maximals.

Title:
CPU/GPU Fans suddenly go 100% RPM on Asus ROG G752VT

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After upgrading from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04, I've noticed that CPU and
GPU fans suddenly go full throttle. It doesn't seem to depend on
temperature, could happen when 32 °C reported, sometimes the laptop
can work for day or two without this issue, but eventually it happens.
The only way to stop fans is to power off the laptop, power on (fans
go 100% at this point again), power off during BIOS splash screen and
power on again. Seems to happen more often after waking up from a
  sleep.

  Things tried:

Upgrading BIOS to latest available on ASUS site to the date of
  writing. No change.

  asus-fan kernel module (https://github.com/daringer/asus-fan). Detects
both fans and shows correct speed in /sys/class/hwmon/*/fan{1,2}*, but
does not seem to control it and does not prevent going full throttle.

4.17.0 kernel from Ubuntu mainline builds. Doesn't seem to affect the
  issue.

  Userspace fan control software (https://github.com/hirschmann/nbfc).
Can control speed of both fans to the point where they go full
throttle, after that has no effect on them.

I'm using 5.15.0-39-lowlatency and "intel_iommu=off" has solved the flickering
problem. I was having the same issue as Anaggh showed on the first video in his
comment above.
Still have "i915.enable_dc=0 intel_idle.max_cstate=2" for now too (but that on
it's own didn't help before).

Booting into desktop gets heavy screen flickering and disforming (unusable)
both booting on xorg and wayland

on kernel 5.13 it did not occur so heavy (only little glitches once in
  a while see bug 1948778)

adding the kernel paramater intel_idle.max_cstate=4 fixed this

i had these same bugs on this machine before:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1975621] Re: [Star Labs Lite IV] screen flashes on-off unless PSR is turned off

2022-06-18 Thread Rogachyov Lavr Afanasiy
A new firmware has been pushed for the machine (new version is 4.17) with fixes.
I think the fix about the C-States is probably the one that should reduce, or
eliminate, that flickering problem from the i915.

Upgrading and will report in a few days about improvements, if any.

Title:
[Star Labs Lite IV] screen flashes on-off unless PSR is turned off

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Laptop is a Starlabs Lite Mv IV
Integrated graphic card is Mesa Intel® UHD Graphics 605 (GLK 3)

Screen backlight turns off and on quickly from time to time
Seems to be random : can happen several times per minute, then nothing
happens for a few minutes. Seems to happen more often if the graphic card load
is increased. Might be related to the graphic card core
temperature/load-related.

Fixed the problem by adding the following kernel option :
  i915.enable_psr=0

Title:
MacBook Pro 2016: 13” detected as 15”, wrong video mode

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On a vanilla install of Ubuntu 22.04 and 21.10, boot is in a video
mode with 2880 vertical pixels, not the real 2560x1600

Impact: at the bottom of the display are 6–12 invisible lines, and during
boot and console work, the cursor is below the bottom of the screen
  — external display has same problem

Root cause: the computer is detected as MacBookPro13,3 (2016 15”
  2880x1800) when it is MacBookPro13,2 (2016 13” 2560x1600)

It appears impossible to change the video mode in grub, there is only one
device and it only has one mode. edid seems to claim that the display supports
both 2560x1400 and 2880x1800 which is false
The dumb thing of course picks 2880x1800

I have noticed that linux-hardware.org probes incorrectly lists the
  computer as MacBookPro13,3

  — no kernel setting can fix this
  — once efi or grub chose a video mode during boot, it cannot be changed
  — the hidden lines is where the cursor is, error messages are displayed

  after boot, one can find:
  get-edid | parse-edidThis is read-edid version 3.0.2. Prepare for some fun.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1958191] Re: [i915] Screen flickering in Ubuntu 22.04 (until i915.enable_dc=0 intel_idle.max_cstate=2 are added) (fixed in 5.17.7 and later)

2022-06-18 Thread Peter
I think there are potentially 4 different bugs that all result in forms
of "flickering" on Intel graphics:

- One related to panel self-refresh (i915.enable_psr), this one has been around
for a while, predates 22.04. I think it even predates 20.04
- "Kaleidoscope patterns" flickering, apparently memory other than the
framebuffer is being displayed, or it's read from the wrong offset. This
eventually leads to a crash in the iris Mesa driver. May not be kernel related.
Personally I've only seen it happen in Xorg sessions, not Wayland. Freedesktop
bug: #6341
- The one discussed above: in this case, flickering starts with the cursor in
specific positions. Related to the I/O memory management unit (intel_iommu),
new in 22.04.
- The issue solved by i915.enable_dc=0 + intel_idle.max_cstate=2, as some
people reported here. However, for me (and also @kjur above) these options
didn't solve the flicker, but intel_iommu=off did. So these are separate issues

For those whose issue is solved by enable_dc=0 + max_cstate=2, it would
be worth trying i915.enable_psr=0 alone, without the other workarounds,
to ascertain if it's the same issue or a different one

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1979125] [NEW] missing dep on llvm-13-linker-tools

2022-06-18 Thread stsp
Public bug reported:

Building with clang on LP
for ubuntu-21.10 (any other
versions are fine) fails with
this on configure step:

/usr/bin/ld: /usr/lib/llvm-13/bin/../lib/LLVMgold.so: error loading plugin:
/usr/lib/llvm-13/bin/../lib/LLVMgold.so: cannot open shared object file: No
such file or directory
clang: error: linker command failed with exit code 1 (use -v to see invocation)
configure:2765: $? = 1

Adding explicit dep on
llvm-13-linker-tools "fixes"
the problem, but breaks on
other distros.

Please add the dep on
lvm-13-linker-tools
to the appropriate llvm
package.

** Affects: llvm-toolchain-13 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
