Title:
  Boot problems after upgrade to kernel 4.15.0-48 (18.04.2LTS/i386)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  NOTE: Boot problems on TWO different laptops after Software Updater
  updated to kernel 4.15.0-48

  Both laptops running Ubuntu 18.04.2LTS i386/32bit with Xubuntu
  desktop. Both fresh installs from minimal CD in early April,
  originally kernel 0.4.15.0-47, both working fine.

  Bug report filed on THIS MACHINE:
  HP Compag 6710b, Intel Core2 Duo T7100 @ 1.8GHz, RAM 4GB, with Intel
integrated graphics controller GM965/GL960 (with kernel command line parameter
¨video=SVIDEO-1:d¨)

  SYMPTOM:
  4.15.0-48 requires a second ´recovery´ boot to get it up and running.
  Will not boot properly after a normal shutdown - screen goes funny and it
hangs
  Does boot successfully after a hard shutdown - detects improper shutdown,
loads grub menu, then boot successfully

  Boot problem appeared after update from kernel version 4.15.0-47 to 4.15.0-48
  Problem occurs in 4.15.0-48 kernel, but not in 4.15.0-47 (which still boots
normally after a normal shutdown)

  OTHER MACHINE:
  Even older!!! ASUS W1N Pentium M banias 1.7gHz, 1.5GB RAM, ATI Mobility
Radeon 9600 GPU. Running with command line parameter "forcepae".
  SYMPTOM:
  Won't boot at all.
  Was working fine under 4.15.0-47 as originally installed, until software
updater installed 4.15.0-48. Now it won't boot (hangs, black screen), and I
can't even get into the grub menu to try the older kernel.

  More Info on what I've already tried for troubleshooting (on the HP6710b) is
outlined in https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/680486

  Happy to provide more info if needed, but I'm just an end user user
  and new to Linux, so will be on a learning curve at this end. (and
  apologies in advance if this a user problem, and not an actual bug).
  Thanks

Bug description:
  Philips i386 PC with rt2x00 pci is suffering loss of WiFi connectivity
  after installing 15.04 Beta.

  The system did work correctly with older Ubuntu versions (like 12.04)
  and had this problem show up after upgrading to Trusty (as I already
  reported in bug #1318837). Using Trusty the problem went away when
  switching from the stock 3.13.0-XX-generic kernel to builds of newer
  kernels (like 3.14.1-031401).

  Now the same problem shows up again after installing Vivid Beta. It seems to
be the same problem reported for other Ubuntu releases (see bugs #1318837 and
#1383555) and also the same problem of this upstream kernel bug:
  https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61621

  Someone on kernel's bug mentions turning off MSI interrupts and I can confirm
it did change the situation:
  - normally the system looses WiFi connectivity mere seconds after boot (eg.
can't ping anything after boot)
  - if I boot with "pci=nomsi" the system will remain connected to the WiFi for
a much longer period (eg. I am able to apt-get install something after boot)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1832082] [NEW] bnx2x driver causes 100% CPU load

2019-06-08 Thread Przemyslaw Hausman
Private bug reported:

For the customer OpenStack deployment we deploy infra nodes on Dell R630
servers. The servers have onboard Broadcom's NetXtreme II BCM57800 NIC
(quad port: 2x1G ports, 2x10G ports). For each port in UP state, we
observe 100% CPU load. So in total, we observe 4 CPUs with 100% load.

perf report shows function bnx2x_ptp_task taking up much of the CPUs
time: https://pastebin.canonical.com/p/kfrpd6Pwh5/

Also, /var/log/syslog contains the following outputs every few seconds:

[1738143.581721] bnx2x: [bnx2x_start_xmit:3855(eno4)]The device supports only a
single outstanding packet to timestamp, this packet will not be timestamped
[1738176.727642] bnx2x: [bnx2x_start_xmit:3855(eno1)]The device supports only a
single outstanding packet to timestamp, this packet will not be timestamped
[1738207.988310] bnx2x: [bnx2x_start_xmit:3855(eno3)]The device supports only a
single outstanding packet to timestamp, this packet will not be timestamped
[1738240.227333] bnx2x: [bnx2x_start_xmit:3855(eno2)]The device supports only a
single outstanding packet to timestamp, this packet will not be timestamped

So, the problem seems to be in a "timestampped" TX packet; the driver
for some reason (to be yet understood) get an unexpected value from a
register and then, it that same function, reschedule itself to try again
this register read, read gets a bad value again, and so on infinitely.

This is showing in the system as the 100% CPU usage kthreads; the
message "The device supports only a single outstanding packet to
timestamp, this packet will not be timestamped" happens because the
driver can only timestamp a single TX packet at a time, and given it's
stuck trying, it cannot accept another packet in this "queue".

The infinite loop appears to be:

static void bnx2x_ptp_task(struct work_struct *work)
{
struct bnx2x *bp = container_of(work, struct bnx2x, ptp_task);
int port = BP_PORT(bp);
u32 val_seq;
u64 timestamp, ns;
struct skb_shared_hwtstamps shhwtstamps;

/* Read Tx timestamp registers */
val_seq = REG_RD(bp, port ? NIG_REG_P1_TLLH_PTP_BUF_SEQID :
NIG_REG_P0_TLLH_PTP_BUF_SEQID);
if (val_seq & 0x1) {
[...]
} else {
DP(BNX2X_MSG_PTP, "There is no valid Tx timestamp yet\n");
/* Reschedule to keep checking for a valid timestamp value */
schedule_work(&bp->ptp_task);
}

It appears that val_seq & 0x1 is never true, so the task constantly
reschedules itself immediately. Instrumenting the function shows that it
is being called in excess of 100,000 times per second. The REG_RD call
does appear to be expensive (as it's a register read from the device)
and shows high in the perf report, but that by itself doesn't appear to
be the root cause (i.e., it's not hanging forever in the REG_RD).

The cause appears to be that the driver is not prepared to deal with the
PTP request never being completed by the hardware. It's unclear why it
isn't completing, but regardless, the driver should not loop forever
here.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1832088] [NEW] zpool import -f throws kernel Ooops

2019-06-08 Thread Michael Traffanstead
Public bug reported:

I believe this started with the upgrade from 5.0.0-15-generic to
5.0.0-16-generic.

I'm running a ZFS RAID2 pool and one of the drives is faulted. I
rebooted under 5.0.0-16-generic and the pool won't import, even with
'-f'. zpool emits a kernel oops spa_load and any zfs tools run after
that just hangs (the system itself seems fine otherwise).

Trace included just incase the bug tool didn't pick it up.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1801540] Re: Microphone distorted sound on ALC892

2019-06-08 Thread Luca Mastromatteo
Some info regarding this, looks like a common problem with also other
different codecs and the only thing in common is the AMD chipset.

The same codecs on Intel looks to play just fine

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Not sure if I'll report this upstream but there is definitely an issue

  Already tried all workarounds possible, no luck. Only with my desktop

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1832091] [NEW] Kernel 5.0.0-16 keyboard malfunction

2019-06-08 Thread Mike Rans
Public bug reported:

Upgrading to kernel package linux-image-5.0.0-16-generic causes the
keyboard which is a USB 2 device connected to a USB C hub on my Dell XPS
13 to behave erratically. The previous kernel (linux-
image-5.0.0-15-generic) doesn't have this problem. (The keyboard is fine
when plugged directly into the laptop's USB rather than into the USB C
hub on 5.0.0-16, so it seems to be a USB C problem in 5.0.0-16).

Ubuntu 5.0.0-16.17~18.04.1-generic 5.0.8

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1832087] Re: Bluetooth not work on INTEL WIRELESS-AC 9260

2019-06-08 Thread Philippe
Strange problem, when I reinstall the kernel 5.0.0-16 it works now.

When I turn on and off the wifi several times, sometimes the bluetooth
does not work anymore.

The problem only seems partially solved.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1721345] Re: ALC295 codec seems to have Master and PCM channels swapped

2019-06-08 Thread Mario Vukelic
Still occurs with Ubuntu 19.04 on Asus ZenBook Flip 15 UX561UD.
The workaround helped.

Codec: Realtek ALC295

Title:
  ALC295 codec seems to have Master and PCM channels swapped

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  When trying to use pulseaudio to control volume on my ASUS Zenbook Pro
  UX550VE *uses AC295 audio codec) I noticed that pulseuadio is varying
  the Master ALSA channel. If I vary that channel in alsamixer I get no
  variation in volume. If I vary the PCM channel instead I get the
  desired effect that volume buttons should have. Since pulseaudio
  varies the Master channel by default and does not respect any
  configuration settings telling it to use other settings, I suggest
  swapping these two channels so that pulseaudio works out of the box.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1740116] Re: Touchpad incorrectly being detected by kernel as PS/2 mouse

2019-06-08 Thread seba
Hello
I have exactly same problem in Ubuntu 19.04 and Toughbook CF-19
5.0.0-16-generic
Because touchpad is detected as mouse i'm unable disable click while touching
touchpad (i want use only hardware keys)
This is make so hard to use, slightly touch while moving finger cause text to
be selected or item to be selected and moved... that make word processing or
simple tasks very inefficient.

I know it's a Year old bug report, but maybe some updates?
Maybe some dirty fix?
just to disable clicking by touch of touchpad?

I would greatly appreciate fix.

Regards

  Touchpad incorrectly being detected by kernel as PS/2 mouse

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  The touchpad in the Panasonic Toughbook CF-30 (specifically CF-30K,
  also known as "CF30", "CF30-3", "CF-30 Mk3", "CF-30 Mark 3", etc) is
  being detected as only a generic PS/2 mouse, not a touchpad of any
  kind.

  Pointing and clicking (also tapping to click) works, but scrolling
  doesn't work -- and there is no touchpad options in the relevant
  control panel, only pointer speed.

  This appears to be happening in the kernel, not in X.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1810239] Re: amd_iommu conflict with Marvell 88SE9230 SATA Controller

2019-06-08 Thread Johannes
Hi,
I had similar Problems with my Marvell 88EE9230. I was able to improve the
situation quite a lot by updating the firmware of the controller itself. In
General all firmware versions beyond version 2.3.xxx improved the situation
quite a lot. The remaining problem is, that I get failures on ata6 which is the
only port which is not connected to any drive at all. Any drive connected to
the marvell controller itself is perfectly stable (24/7 for +400 days).

Status in linux-oem source package in Bionic:

Bug description:
  ===SRU Justification===
  [Impact]
  r8169 failed to establish connection after the fix for LP: #1752772
  landed.

  [Fix]
  Accepts BIOS WoL settings again, and disables MSI-X for certain chip
  revisions.

  [Test]
  Users confirmed the fix worked for them.

  [Regression Potential]
  Low. This brings back the old behavior for both WoL and MSI.

  ===Original Bug Report===
  When my computer wakes up from suspending, there's no internet. Unplugging
and replugging cable doesn't work, restarting network service doesn't work
also. Only after restarting the computer, internet comes back.
  It only started happening after I freshly installed Ubuntu Budgie (18.04) and
did all the system updates. Before I was using Ubuntu with Unity (16.04) and
there was no problems with my internet.
