Bug description:
  Hi,

The most recent set of Ubuntu kernels applied a variety of tty patches
  including:

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/c96cf923a98d1b094df9f0cf97a83e118817e31b

But have not applied the more recent

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/d3736d82e8169768218ee0ef68718875918091a0
  patch.

This second patch is required to prevent a rather serious regression
where userspace applications reading from stdin can receive EAGAIN
  when they should not.

I will try to link correspondence from the mailing list archives once
they are available, but for now if you have access to the linux-
console mailing list you can find discussion under the thread
"Userspace break? read from STDIN returns EAGAIN if tty is "touched"".

I would appreciate it if this could be examined soon as it is a
  regression on userspace.

  Thanks
  Michael

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1815225] Re: Ubuntu System on USB Drive Breaks with Updates Requiring Restarts

2019-02-10 Thread Wade
Sorry, one last thing. If this issue is not an issue in later versions
than 14.04 LTS, due to later-introduced hot patching for example (so
that restarts are never required for updates), that would be considered
a reasonable solution, and I would just upgrade to Version 16 or 18 as
needed. Thank you.

Title:
Ubuntu System on USB Drive Breaks with Updates Requiring Restarts

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
First, please forgive me if I do not report this issue correctly. I'm
new here and don't generally live in the Launchpad world. (I've tried
this at askUbuntu.com, and it was suggested I come here.)

In brief: I have a 2006 Dell Inspiron (32 bit) with a (slow) 40 GB
hard drive running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Having the system exactly the way
I want it, I used the application "Systemback" to install the system
on a (fast) 128 GB USB drive, which, being bootable, worked exactly
the same as if I booted from the hard drive. So I started using the
  faster 128 USB drive exclusively.

Now typically, Software Updater, if not requiring a restart, updated the
running USB drive just fine. But one day, after Software Updater did an update
that required a restart, this happened:
the GRUB 2 bootloader the USB drive that was booted from, AND ALSO the GRUB 2
bootloader on the laptop's hard drive got broken, to the point where neither
was bootable, taking me to the dreaded "grub rescue" command line when trying
to boot either one. (Thankfully, I had a second USB drive with my Ubuntu system
on it, and was able to install it from there to both the laptop's hard drive
and the other now-ruined USB drive to bring them back to a pre-broken, normal
existence.)

With that background, I ask: Can Ubuntu's updates that require
restarts merely work with the drive that was booted from, and not any
affect any others (including an unmounted hard drive that was not
  booted from) ?

If so, then anyone could get a Linux the way they want that they can
take anywhere, bootable from any computer, AND update-able from any
computer, bypassing all need for hard drives of any sort. No longer
would people need to even buy laptops with hard drives or even
operating systems. They could simply buy a smaller, cheaper, hard-
drive-less and OS-less device that runs merely by plugging an Ubuntu
Linux USB drive into it as "the system".

Thank you very much for your time!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1815225] Re: Ubuntu System on USB Drive Breaks with Updates Requiring Restarts

2019-02-10 Thread Wade
Sorry... I should have said if this is no longer an issue in later
**32-bit** versions... because hot patching might must be for 64 bit
versions, which wouldn't help in this case. Thanks.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1809843] Re: sky2 ethernet card link not up after suspend

2019-02-10 Thread Jeremy
In terminal try

echo "options sky2 disable_msi=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/sky2.conf
sudo modprobe -r sky2
sudo modprobe sky2

Then test it

Title:
sky2 ethernet card link not up after suspend

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Issue is as described by the user 'kris' in #1798921
  (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1798921).

Sometimes when bringing my laptop up from suspended state my Ethernet
card shows link connection and activity via port LEDs but ethtool
indicates the link is not up. This does not happen every time I resume
from suspend, about one in 5 times. When it does happen, the following
additional message is present in my dmesg output:

  [ 686.804877] do_IRQ: 1.37 No irq handler for vector

The lspci -vvnn output for the Ethernet card is:

02:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8057
PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller [11ab:4380] (rev 10)

the hopes that this specific card will be added to the relevant MSI quirks
table. If I do not suffer from the same issue as kris in the above linked
issue, I will be happy to provide any additional information, test fixes etc. I
would like to avoid using the 'pci=nomsi, noaer' workaround he mentioned if
possible.

I am hoping that either Apport includes that information or you could
tell me how do I dig out that information.

  Hi,

The most recent set of Ubuntu kernels applied a variety of tty patches
  including:

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/c96cf923a98d1b094df9f0cf97a83e118817e31b

But have not applied the more recent

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/d3736d82e8169768218ee0ef68718875918091a0
  patch.

This second patch is required to prevent a rather serious regression
where userspace applications reading from stdin can receive EAGAIN
  when they should not.

I will try to link correspondence from the mailing list archives once
they are available, but for now if you have access to the linux-
console mailing list you can find discussion under the thread
"Userspace break? read from STDIN returns EAGAIN if tty is "touched"".

I would appreciate it if this could be examined soon as it is a
  regression on userspace.

  Thanks
  Michael

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

  ---Problem Description---
hvcs vterm driver doesn't cleanup it's tty kref allocation on close

As a result, if the vterm device is used, closed, then hot-plug
removed, the original device (/dev/hvcsX) will never be re-used as the
  .destruct method never gets called.

In the hvcs_close method, it should call tty_port_put. This in theory
would get handled by the _cleanup method, but the _close method nulls
the tty->driver_data, therefore making the _cleanup method a noop.

I made the following change which fixed the issue for me - allowed
.destruct to be called on DLPAR remove of the adapter.

  Machine Type = 8247-22L

  ---Debugger---
  A debugger is not configured

  ---Steps to Reproduce---
   1) Create a virtual serial device from the HMC - dynamically (make sure you
have rsct etc. installed for DLPAR support). In the example below, we created
a device that provides a console to lpar 6.

chhwres -m --id -r virtualio --rsubtype serial -o
  a -a adapter_type=client,remote_lpar_id=6,remote_slot_num=0

  2) From your linux partition, you should now see a console device available.
You can use the handy '/sbin/hvcsadmin' tool to see the console.
  # hvcsadmin -console 6
  vty-server@3003 partition:6 slot:0 /dev/hvcs0 vterm-state:0

Here we can see that /dev/hvcs0 got used for lpar 6

  3) Now open the device. We'll use 'socat' here, but you can use
pretty much anything (screen, etc). Once open, hit Ctl+] to exit

  socat STDIO,raw,echo=0,escape=0x1d /dev/hvcs0

  4) Now check your hvcsadmin -console 6 again. the vterm-state will show 1.
Let's close it. and verify it got closed (per the vterm_state)
  # hvcsadmin -close /dev/hvcs0
  # hvcsadmin -console 6
  vty-server@3003 partition:6 slot:0 /dev/hvcs0 vterm-state:0

  5) Now let's remove the device alltogether. Go back to the HMC to do
this. Here we will remove slot # 3 (because that's what we created
above - hence the 300<3> value).

chhwres -m --id -r virtualio --rsubtype serial -o
  r -s 3

  6) Verify you no longer have a console device on your linux lpar...this will
not print anything out.
  # hvcsadmin -console 6

  7) Now go ahead and re-add the device with the same command as you
  ran in step #1

  8) Now let's see what device it allocated. If this were behaving correctly,
it would re-allocate /dev/hvcs0, but as you'll see, it allocates /dev/hvcs1
instead.
  # hvcsadmin -console 6
  vty-server@3003 partition:6 slot:0 /dev/hvcs1 vterm-state:0

  9) You can keep repeating these until you run out of hvcsX devices. Note
that if you skipped the 'open' step, and simply removed the device then
re-created it, the bug would not occur.

If things are working correctly, you should see the following dmesg output:
[ 5287.993312] HVCS: vty-server@3003 added to the vio bus.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1813873] Re: Userspace break as a result of missing patch backport

2019-02-10 Thread md_5
No package containing the fix for 18.04 has been released yet, only 18.10.
It is therefore expected that 18.04.X still displays the issue.

  Hi,

The most recent set of Ubuntu kernels applied a variety of tty patches
  including:

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/c96cf923a98d1b094df9f0cf97a83e118817e31b

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/d3736d82e8169768218ee0ef68718875918091a0

  Thanks
  Michael

it tho.

  Hello,

I'm seeing substantially slower read performance from an ssd pool than
  I expected.

I have two pools on this computer; one ('fst') is four sata ssds, the
other ('srv') is nine spinning metal drives.

With a long-running ripgrep process on the fst pool, performance
started out really good and grew to astonishingly good (iirc ~30kiops,
as measured by zpool iostat -v 1). However after a few hours the
performance has dropped to 30-40 iops. top reports an arc_reclaim and
many arc_prune processes to be consuming most of the CPU time.

I've included a screenshot of top, some output from zpool iostat -v 1,
and arc_summary, with "===" to indicate the start of the next
  command's output:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1782206] Re: KVM enable SnowRidge Accelerator Interfacing Architecture (AIA)

2019-02-10 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Ok, now we finally know it is about qemu&kernel patches - I'll add tasks for
that.
Still haven't seen any xen references, setting that to incomplete.

But given how new it is I'd punt this from 19.04 to 19.10 where things
in kernel&qemu will have matured and be safer to use.

If you are not ok with this please outline important use cases that will be
inhibited.
All changes are "just" adding definitions, no actual code added - but I'm
somewhat afraid of hidden dependencies - especially since we have no associated
testcase and it would need special (very new) hardware t be tested.
